Cupcakes to boost education HEILIE COMBRINCK
I
t is said an apple a day keeps the doctor away, but in KwaNobuhle it is rather, a cupcake a day brings hope all the way.
“Yes, we want to change mindsets. We wish to bring hope. And we strive to promote entrepreneurship and community development, challenging the youth not to be dismayed by unemployment,” said Athenkosi Msutwana, the co-founder of Cupcakes with Hope. An average of 40 cupcakes a day are sold and since establishing Cupcakes with Hope during March 2016, thousands of cupcakes have been enjoyed, particularly by learners at local schools. The initiative is run by six young men who strive to bring about change in their community through the selling of a variety of flavoured cupcakes. The men are Likhaya Nkohli, Siyabulela Mbalane, Lunathi Yoli, Sinethemba Magxaki, Athenkosi Mgutwana and Mbongeni Mdashe. “We bake from home in Jibiliza Street and deliver and sell these cupcakes at local schools. There are hurdles along the way, but we are determined to utilize that in assisting us to grow our initiative into a successful business. “The current cupcake campaign runs until August with the aim to generate funds, to assist the five best Grade 12 learners of local high schools, in paying application fees to further their education,” said Athenkosi. This campaign includes 8 high schools in KwaNobuhle, meaning they wish to assist 40 top learners from the area to be able to further

ciate any help as we are trying our best to help others. We feel that our initiative is to encourage unity and to bring hope for a better future,” said Athenkosi.

Motorbotsings teen loslopende vee bly ’n dodelike probleem in die Nelson Mandelabaai-gebied. Tussen 27 Junie en 2 Julie alleen is vyf sulke botsings onderskeidelik op die paaie tussen Rocklands en Uitenhage (2), Despatch en Uitenhage (2) en by Fitchett Corner aangemeld. Hannes Bekker, groenteboer, glo ‘verkeerde’ wetgewing, naamlik dat grondeienaars self die ‘plakkervee’ van hul grond moet verwyder, tot die probleem bydra. “Die grondeienaar moet dus eie laaibank en sleepwa aanskaf, die vee aankeer, oplaai en wegry na die skut. Wanneer die bees egter op die pad is, moet die owerhede die vee verwyder – en dít maak dan dat sommige grondeienaars die vee aanjaag pad toe,” sê Bekker Deidre Swift, voorsitter van die Uitenhage-dierebeskermingsvereniging, het grondeienaars versoek om eerder die munisipaliteit se veebeheer eenheid by 079 490 0540 te bel

as om ‘plakkervee’ aan te jaag pad toe, want só iets kom ook neer op mishandeling. In ’n poging om die probleem van loslopende vee in die Uitenhagedistrik op te los, is ’n dringende vergadering in April met die boere, polisie en die langplaas-boere (vee-eienaars wat hul vee aan die gras langs die paaie laat wei) gehou. “Agt stuks vee is toe ook in daardie tyd geskut. Daar is vir die boere gesê
nóg meer vee sal geskut word, en die dit lyk asof die probleem nou klein bietjie kleiner is,” het Bekker gesê. Ongeveer ’n maand gelede het die polisie gehelp om 77 stuks loslopende vee padlangs na die skut by dierebeskermingsvereniging op Uitenhage aan te jaag. Bekker het die grootste lof vir die polisie. “Hulle baklei saam met die boere vir beter beheer oor loslopende vee.” (-Mariska Spoormaker)

Bookings have opened for the Sasol Addo Birding Weekend which will be held in Addo Elephant National Park from 21 – 23 October 2016. The weekend of birding will offer a wonderful opportunity to experience the diverse biomes of Addo Elephant National Park and the chance to spot over 200 bird species. Organised by the SANParks Honorary Rangers at Addo, participants will have a choice of taking part in different excursions. Birders will join groups birding in different areas of the ecologically diverse Addo Elephant National Park. Excursions include a trip through the Nyathi area of the Park, which is an exclusive concession area; float up the Sundays River on a ferry spotting different species of kingfishers and water fowl or take a ride through Addo game viewing area and see parts of
Addo that are not open to the general public. Two additional excursions have been added, namely the pristine Kabouga section, which is situated close to the town of Kirkwood and the Narina area, which is situated in the Zuurberg Mountains. The weekend starts on Friday evening with a get-together and ends with a breakfast and prize giving on Sunday morning. A variety of accommodation has been prebooked by the SANParks Honorary Rangers in Addo Elephant National Park and bookings should be done well in advance to avoid disappointment. Share your (local ) winter holiday fun pictures The expression “a picture paints a thousand words” rings true to Nelson Mandela Bay Tourism (NMBT) as the #ShareTheBay campaign kicked off where citizens are invited to share pictures of them being tourists in their own back yards. Aimed at showcasing just how much fun can be had in the Metro despite the slight winter chill, this three month campaign also aims to encourage visitors and locals to explore and capture their authentic experiences and share them on NMBT’s social media platforms using the hashtags #ShareTheBay and #MyNelsonMandelaBay. Participants stand a chance to be featured daily on NMBT’s social media channels, win fantastic weekly prizes which include accommodation, adventure activities in and around the city and the 5 in 1 Nelson Mandela Bay Pass cards that allow free and discounted entry into a variety of attractions and facilities in and around the Bay. D
aar hang ’n 3 x 1.5 meter olieverfskildery in Bergsig Skool se klubhuis, vir nageslagte om ’n dorp en ’n skool te onthou wat geleenthede vir almal bied. Dié kunswerk is geskep deur Quetin Bruintjies (18), wie verlede jaar sy skoolloopbaan by Bergsig voltooi het. Luana Bester, kunstenaar as-ook kunsonderwyser by Bergsig sê, “Quetin het ’n fyn aanvoeling vir kleur en toonwaardes. Sy sterkte is sy leerbare gees en dit maak van hom ’n suksesvolle kunstenaar.”
Quetin het ’n hele kwartaal aan die panele gewerk. Die twee sypanele is deur die graad 10 kunsleerlinge geverf. Dié panele beeld die verskillende ambagte van Bergsig uit soos spyseniering, duikklop, kuns, spuitverf, plaatmetaal, haarkappery en sweiswerk. Quetin het in 2015 sy skoolloopbaan op ’n hoogtepunt voltooi nadat hy die gesogte Bergsig Kuns Kafee trofee ontvang het as die beste
kunsstudent. Deesdae is hy voltyds besig met verfwerk en ontvang verdere onderrig in kuns by Luana Bester. Hy doen ook muurkuns en skilder opdragwerk vir besighede of mense wat in hul huise ’n fokusmuur in ’n kunswerk wil omskep. “Quetin is iemand wat wil leer en ’n sukses van sy lewe wil maak. Met sy besonderse styl
het hy dag vir dag geverf en stadig maar seker het sy sketse ontwikkel in pragtige skilderye,” het Luana gesê. Maar soos die landskap verander moes ek die lug die heeltyd aanpas sodat die kleure mooi balanseer,” sê Quetin, wat reeds in sy laerskooldae by Sonop in kuns presteer het. “Juffrou Luana is amazing. Haar aanmoediging is my inspirasie. Sy het my geleer om te skilder wat ek sien. Dat my oë die kleure vang en die boodskap na my brein stuur en dan doen my hande wat ek gesien het.”

The South African National Blood Service, SANBS, celebrates July as Mandela month and encourages the public to use part of their 67 minutes towards donating blood. “No healthcare system can function efficiently without a stable supply of safe blood,” said Nina van Wyk from the donor marketing office of the South African National Blood Service’s Eastern Cape zone. “It is nothing short of a miracle that vital aspects of healthcare are in the hands of ordinary blood donors, who selflessly donate their blood to improve the lives of complete stran-
gers,” said Nina. The 19th annual Algoa FM Bloodline Day is taking place next Wednesday, July 13th and the public can be part of this great initiative, by donating a unit of blood. This year’s target is to collect 800 units of blood. This will help alleviate the notorious blood shortages of this time of year. Participating blood donor centres will operate from 10:00 to 18:00 and every donor will be treated to the famous doughnuts associated with this special day, kindly sponsored by Pick ‘n Pay. Honde trek ‘bekende’ stroper in Addo olifantpark vas ALVENÉ APPOLLIS Bullet en Banshi, twee van die Addo-olifant Nasionale Park se opgeleide patrolliehonde, het ’n onwettige jagter in die park vasgetrek. Die twee honde het die naweek hul rondes saam met veldwagters in die park se hoofkamp gedoen toe hulle die onwettige jagter – sonder ’n groot geblaf – die skrik op die lyf gejaag het. “Toe die jagter die honde gewaar, het hy onmiddellik sy geweer gelos en homself oorgegee, sonder dat die twee eens nodig gehad het om ’n lawaai te maak,” vertel John Adendorff, die park se bewaringshoof. Die verdagte, wie se naam in dié stadium nie genoem mag word nie, is glo ’n “ou hand”
en bekend in die Addo-omgewing. Dis egter toevallig dat hy só vasgetrek is, het Adendorff gesê. Hy glo dat opgeleide honde in parke dwarsoor die land ’n groot aanwins is. Bullet en Banshi – een ’n snuffelhond en die ander ’n spoorsnyer – is deur die trust vir bedreigde spesies na Addo gestuur. Die een spesialiseer onder meer in die uitsnuffel van geweerpatrone en die ander in renosterhoring. “Hulle was nie op die spoor van renosterstropers nie – die veldwagters en die honde het bloot strikke gesoek – maar dit het een minder onwettige jagter tot gevolg gehad. “Hopelik is dit ’n les vir enige ander jagter wat onwettig die park wil indring,” het Adendorff opgemerk.

Hear first-hand from intrepid cyclist Wayne Bolton and his support team the tales of adventure and inspiration in aid of our rhino and natural heritage. The One Land Love It Expedition 2015/2016, which ended at Addo Elephant National Park in February, was a successful fundraising and awareness cycle. Port Elizabeth businessman, Wayne Bolton, cycled 6 000km over 80 days to all 19 South African National Parks (SANParks), where he interacted with staff from all the parks. Upon his return, one of the things he highlighted was how prevalent the threat to the rhino and the natural heritage is. The escalation of poaching in South Africa and the continent as a whole is alarming, with statistics showing that Africa has lost 90% of

its elephant population in the last century and if nothing changes the elephant along with the rhino could be extinct by 2025. According to John Adendorff, Addo Elephant National Park’s Conservation Manager, “The Eastern Cape is home to the largest population Black Rhino sub-species bicornis bicornis (meaning two-horned), the desert rhino. “Any rhino lost is a disaster, but losing one desert rhino could equate to 150 white rhino lost. This is purely based on numbers and the threatened status of the species. For this reason we value the support and awareness created by OLLI.” Wayne, who considers himself just another ordinary South African says, “Ordinary people have to make a difference. We can contribute to the cause in any number of ways - from investing money in suitable organisations, to lobbying government for a stronger re-

Volkswagen atlete trots op Comrades deelnames Sewe van Volkswagen Amateur Atletiek klub (VWAAC) se atlete het vanjaar die Comrades-wedloop voltooi. Drie van hulle het ook hulle “back to back” medaljes verdien. Dié medaljes gaan aan atlete wat hulle eerste twee Comradeswedlope in agtereenvolgende jare voor die afsnytyd voltooi. Die drie atlete is Clint Jonas (VWAAC), Sebastian Haarhoff (VWAAC) en Peter Prinsloo (VWAAC). Volkswagen Suid-Afrika het altesaam 9 werknemers wat aan die Comrades wedloop deelgeneem het waarvan 7 van hulle lede is van die atletiekklub.

Gamble mixed team win upset in stadium’s night relay It’s been years since the Gamble Pharmacy Men’s team has been upstaged at the Night Relay and this month’s 2nd round of the Town Lodge Business Night Relay witnessed just the second time in over 4 years that a new winner was crowned. Whilst the honours stayed with the compa-
ny, the winners medal went to the Gamble Pharmacy mixed team who pipped the Men’s team by just 30 seconds at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium. The unique Town Lodge Business Night Relay was well supported with 87 registered teams taking part so far this year.

Methuselahs Golf: This week’s competition was played on IPS format. Ernie Dyer recorded a near perfect round coming home on 23.5 points with Bob McAuley in a distant 2nd place on 17.5 points. The Morris Olivier sponsored prize for nearest the pins on short holes went to Hans Botha on the 4th and Ernie Dyer on the 7th hole. Two clubs were recorded by Hans Botha on both the 4th and 7th holes, and Ernie Dyer on the 7th hole. Ben Viljoen earned himself the Teddy Bear award and Mike Liddiard walked away with the whiskey draw.

Entries awaited for man versus train race Entires are awaited for the 2016 Nelson Mandela Bay Train Race, the iconic and unique man versus machine biathlon relay race which will be held on Sunday, October 2. Re-introduced in 2014 in a new and exciting format between Port Elizabeth and Uitenhage, this year’s Train Race is expected to attract over 250 teams comprising 5 runners and 1 mountain bike cyclist as the teams take
on a Metrorail train over a distance of 38km. This year sees the addition of an individual category to the event which already caters for company, school, social and club teams. The route is divided into 6 stages with the race starting from the Port Elizabeth railway station. Last year’s race saw the top 3 teams all beating the train with Uitenhage’s Gamble
Pharmacy beating the IAC Investments team. Once again the Gamble Pharmacy team who are dominating the Town Lodge Night Relay monthly winter series will be starting as race favourites. Entry fees for the Train Race event are R700 for a corporate team, R600 for a Social Team, R500 for club teams, R400 for school teams and R200 per individual. Spectator Train tickets
are R60 each. Through this event, the organisers draw attention to the needs of those living within the communities along the route and highlight the work that non-profit organisation Love Story is doing to assist such communities. )Online registration is available on www.trainrace.co.za.
Cold water junkies - hottest attraction to WinterFest Top surfers, iconic athletes, mountain bike enthusiasts and cold water junkies headline this year’s JBay WinterFest. Now in its fourth year, the annual JBay Winterfest sponsored by Woodlands, started yesterday and commences until July 17th. The exciting line-up taps into the festival mood with some bold new events on the calendar, as well as refreshingly different formats for some existing events. The anchor event of the festival is the JBay Open of Surfing, which brings the
world’s best surfers to town, including legends like Kelly Slater and Mick Fanning. Local support will lie with Steven Sawyer from Jeffreys Bay, as well South African Jordy Smith who won two titles back in Jeffreys Bay in 2010 and 2011. The majority of the events that rocked Jeffreys Bay in 2015, will be back this year. New on the menu is the Quiksilver Junior Pro and the Roxy Junior Pro at Magnatubes from July 8 to 10. The event caters for surfers in the u.18, u.16 and u.12 divisions.
