Toe die munispaliteit om amptelike kommentaar genader is, het Mtubanzi Mniki, munisipale woordvoerder die kontaknommers en adresse van die ‘water-klaers’ gevra sodat beamptes hul water kan toets, en eers daarna sal hy kommentaar lewer.

Municipal worker ‘rescued’ cannon barrel HEILIE COMBRINCK

He later confirmed that the cannon barrel was indeed not stolen, but being stored in a safe place The address of which he could not provide. The cannon is not lost to history thanks to an “off-duty” municipal worker from Uitenhage who spotted the barrel on an abandoned wheelbarrow at the entrance to Cannon Hill. He alerted a police vehicle in the vicinity. Residents contacted the UD News and were concerned that the cannon barrel, one of about 90 on the Amsterdam, a Dutch troop ship which ran aground near the Swartkops River mouth in 1817, had been stolen to be sold as scrap metal.

The mysterious disappearance of the cannon barrel at Uitenhage’s well-known Cannon Hill has finally been explained. The UD News last week reported that the cannon barrel, at this historic landmark of the past 200 years, had disappeared from its base without a trace. Concerned residents raised the alarm after they had spotted the missing cannon barrel. Initially, in reaction to their concerns, the municipal spokesperson Mthubanzi Mniki said they were not aware that the cannon had been stolen.

Elva Mbejeni of the municipality’s parks department told Dave McCleland of Uitenhage’s Garden Town Initiative in an e-mail, that “the incident had already taken place a month before.” Cannon Hill constantly is being vandalised with indigenous plants being removed and graffiti on the walls of the lookout-post. The four huge historic cast-iron main gates at Cannon Hill “disappeared” two years ago.

Asked whether there were any plans to secure Cannon Hill from further vandalism, Mniki could not say if the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality had a plan to better protect it against vandals. The Uitenhage Lions Club, which is known for its involvement in serving the community, has indicated that they would like to get involved in safeguarding Cannon Hill from further vandalism.

Ferreira has been hard at work to compile a spectacular slide show of the hundreds of photos portraying the action of those days which will be shown on big screen. The club was established during 1928 and an old dirt track near the railway station, was used as their initial rugby field. Soon afterwards a new field was acquired in Lower Drostdy Street. The club progressed from strength to strength with the best years during the 1970s when OC scooped all the local prestige cups like the Birch Cup, Grand Challenge Cup (1972, 1976 & 1979), Dewar Shield as well as the Oosterlig Cup. A total of 35 OC players

have during the period of 1949 to 1986 played for EP. In those days the highlight on the sporting calendar was the annual clash between Old Collegians and Swifts Rugby Club, which was supported by thousands of spectators. Came the 1990s, social and economic transformation hit the town and it was said that “Uitenhage is too big for one club and too small for two clubs.” Thus OC and Swifts amalgamated becoming the Uitenhage Rugby Club. “This should never have happened. It was a huge mistake and the end of good competitive rugby,” said Van Appel. Reunion & steak evening All former players (with their spouses) and supporters are invited to the reunion. It will be held on October 7th in the form of a steak evening at Barkly Street Theatre at 18:00 for 18:30. Vlakvarke langs R75-pad lei tot motorongelukke CARALEE DORFLING

lakvarke wat oor die R75 tussen Uitenhage en Kirkwoord hardloop, het die afgelope maand tot drie ernstige ongelukke gelei. <Frederick van der Mescht het sy Opel die verlede week op die R75 tussen Uitenhage en Kirkwood afgeskryf nadat die motor voor hom vir ’n vlakvark gerem het. Dit is een van minstens drie ongelukke wat die afgelope maand as gevolg van vlakvarke in die pad veroorsaak is.

In die mees onlangse voorval het ’n man van Port Elizabeth, Frederick van der Mescht (30), sy Opel afgeskryf omdat die motor voor hom vir vlakvarke gerem het. “Die motorbestuurder voor my het skielik rem getrap vir ’n groep vlakvarke wat oor die pad gehardloop het en ek het uitgeswenk en teen ’n aankomende motor gebots,” sê Van der Mescht. Hy het wonde aan sy knie en arm opgedoen. Ander motoriste wat onlangs op die pad van Uitenhage tot by die afdraai na Kirkwood weens vlakvarke in ’n motorbotsing was, het met gekraakte ribbes in die hospitaal beland. Volgens Van der Mescht se pa, Freddie, is daar baie vlakvarke langs dié pad. “Dit is seker die droogte wat die varke nou na die plase dryf en gevolglik ’n hengse gevaar vir motoriste inhou.” Freddie sê hy het verlede week meer as 15 vlakvarke langs die sowat 30 km getel. “Iemand sal iets moet doen om die varkpes uit die pad te hou. Maar die vraag is net wie se verantwoordelikheid is dit,” vra Freddie. Prof. Pieter van Niekerk van die Nelson Mandela-Universiteit (NMU) se departement landbou en wildbestuur het by navraag gesê “om te jag langs of op ’n hoofpad is ’n oortreding”. Hy meen die gevaar van vlakvarke op die paaie wat motorongelukke veroorsaak, is soortgelyk aan koedoes wat voor motors in hardloop. “Die motoris kan slegs ’n wildboer dagvaar as hy of sy kan bewys daardie dier behoort aan die eienaar. “Dit is tans bitter droog en die vlakvarke gaan soek natuurlik nou die groenigheid

Ek verstaan die gevaar wat die diere vir motoriste en motorfietsryers hier rond inhou.” Tog blameer Rudman die nalatigheid van die Suid-Afrikaanse Nasionale Padagentskap (Sanral) wat glo nie hul verantwoordelikheid nakom deur die grensdrade te herstel nie. “Die meeste van die grensdrade is vrot, vol gate en geroes. Geen wonder die varke kom so maklik uit nie.” Sanral het nie op navrae gereageer nie.

SPCA adoption day: good homes needed The Uitenhage SPCA kennels currently take care of many gorgeous dogs, puppies, cats and kittens all of which are desperately in need of loving homes. Therefore an adoption day will be held on Sunday together with a jumble sale to raise funds for the association. There will be a wide selection of second hand goods as well as clothing, books, toys, linen, balls of good quality mohair wool for sale with lots of bric-abrac available. The kennels are situated in Schonland Street and the gates will be open on Sunday between 10:00 and 12:00. The public are urged rather to consider adopting than shopping. This will complete the rescue of so many of the cats and dogs which find themselves in the SPCA’s care, by offering them a loving home of their own. Police arrest 157 suspects Police officials in the Uitenhage Cluster have arrested more than 157 suspects, through high density operations that were conducted over the past weekend until Tuesday morning. According to police spokesperson Captain Gerda Swart, a total of 54 traffic fines were issued, valued at more than R27 000. The suspects were arrested on charges relating to housebreaking and theft, attempted murder, robbery, assault with the intent to do grievous bodily harm, theft and possession of suspected stolen goods. “Five (5) arrests were made for driving under the influence of liquor. 43 Persons were arrested and detained after illegal drugs were found in their possession. Poeier in telefoonkabels Projek om sanitêre glo ’n dwelm ware in te samel

ie gemeenskap van Kruisrivier buite Uitenhage sit al maande lank sonder telefoonlyne – en dit glo omdat ’n poeier wat in dié kabels gebruik word, nou ook as ’n dwelm dien. Boere in die omgewing meen die poeier, wat glo by die kabels gevoeg word om vog te absorbeer en die drade droog te hou, is die rede agter talle kabeldiefstalle in die gemeenskap. Ongeag die rede vir die diefstal, raak inwoners nou warm onder die kraag. “Die tegnici maak die drade aan die een punt reg, dan begin die diewe weer by die ander punt,” het Hannes Bekker van die Kruisrivier-inwonersvereniging gesê. “Dit is nou al amper vier maande sonder telefoonlyne – dit is ’n diens wat Telkom moet lewer.” Telkom het bevestig dat Kruisrivier se inwoners deurloop onder diefstal. “Ons is bewus van ’n paar gevalle in Mei, waarna die kabel op 29 Junie vervang is,” het Jacqui O’Sullivan, Telkom se kommunikasiehoof, gesê. “ ’n Deel van dié kabel is egter weer teen 1 Julie gesteel. Ons sukkel tans met ’n tekort aan die nodige materiaal, maar ons wil die dienste teen die naweek herstel.” O’Sullivan het gesê Telkom werk ook saam met die plaaslike polisie om diefstal te voorkom.

Kabeldiefstal het tot gevolg dat die inwoners van Kruisrivier sonder telefoonlyne is. Sommige van die inwoners in dié gemeenskap glo dat die poeier wat in kabels gebruik word om vog te absorbeer, ’n dwelmmiddel is en dat dit daarom gesteel word. Solidariteit Helpende Hand het daarom ’n projek begin wat fokus op behoeftige meisies wat nie sanitêre produkte kan bekostig nie. “’n Steekproef deur Helpende Hand het gewys dat meisies tydens hul maandstonde skool mis om verleentheid te vermy. Die Help Hanna-projek wil seker maak dat dié meisies se reg tot opvoeding nie van hulle ontneem word nie,” het Van der Westhuizen gesê. “Sommige meisies is vir meer as 55 skooldae per jaar weens dié rede nie in die skool nie.” Helpende Hand het die karakter, Hanna, geskep om elke meisie wat hierdie probleem ervaar, te verteenwoordig. Die publiek word daarom gevra om vir Hanna te help en sodoende tot meisies se opvoeding en waardigheid by te dra. Night at museum back on demand While the embattled Bayworld complex has received the long-awaited news that parts of it will finally be run by the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality, after years of battling through red tape to achieve this, Friends of Bayworld are also rallying their efforts to keep it afloat. The group, which is dedicated to supporting the facility, is hard at work planning another of their successful Night at the Museum events which will be held on Saturday, July 23. According to Friends of Bayworld representative, Anelle Bailey, they started the Night at the Museum campaign, of which the third edition will be held this year, with a Facebook event page. “We expected maybe 200 to 500 people to show up (for the first one). By 19:00, we had to close the doors as the buildings were filled to capacity. About 1 500 people attended,” she said. The first event was restricted to the Museum and Snake Park only and last year, they expanded it to include the entire Bayworld complex. More good news for the complex is the announcement on Friday that the Eastern Cape Department for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation and the municipality have signed a service level agreement for the upgrading of the complex. Night at the Museum will take place on Saturday, July 23 from 17:00 to 22:00. Entry is R25. ‘Swendelaars lieg vir boere oor varkpes’ LOURENS SCHOEMAN

Klassieke varkpes is nie dieselfde as die meer algemene varkgriep nie, maar twee verskillende varksiektes, verduidelik Simon Streicher, uitvoerende hoof van die SuidAfrikaanse Varkvleisprodusente-organisasie. Varke wat klassieke varkpes het, hou op met vreet, het hoë koors en bondel op mekaar. Vrektes kom voor. Dit is ’n siekte wat dadelik aangemeld moet word. Geen entstof hierteen is in Suid-Afrika beskikbaar nie, en besmette varke word van kant gemaak. Klassieke varkpes maak nie mense siek nie. Mense wat in aanraking was met varke wat met die siekte besmet is, kan egter die siekte aan gesonde varke oordra. “Daar was in 2005 ’n uitbreking van hierdie siekte in die Oos-Kaap, en toe moes 492 000 varke deur die veeartsenydienste van kant

gemaak word. Hierdie veldtog het die SuidAfrikaanse regering R800 miljoen gekos,” aldus Streicher. Volgens Mlibo Qoboshiyane, LUR vir landelike ontwikkeling en grondhervorming, besoek “sekere individue” plase en vertel aan die eienaars dat uitbrekings van die siekte in die provinsie voorkom. “Hulle beweer ook dat die departement besig is om besmette varke bymekaar te maak sodat dit van kant gemaak kan word. Dit is heeltemal onwaar. “Ek wil dit duidelik stel dat daar geen uitbreking van hierdie siekte in die Oos-Kaap of elders in Suid-Afrika is nie. Indien ’n uitbreking hiervan wel voorkom, sal hierdie sensitiewe inligting deur die korrekte amptelike kanale deur die staat bekend gemaak word. “Almal wat hierdie onware stories versprei, moet onmiddellik aan die polisie gerapporteer word, sodat hulle voor die hof gedaag kan word,” het Qoboshiyane gesê. Ook Douglas Stern, president van Agri Oos-Kaap,

weet van geen uitbreking van die siekte in die provinsie nie. “Hierdie is klaarblyklik ’n swendelstorie. Onder normale omstandighede sal Agri OosKaap die eerste wees wat in kennis gestel sal word van enige dieresiekte wat ons provinsie tref. “As dít die geval was, sou ons as organisasie lankal ons lede in kennis gestel het van die gevare en implikasies van so ’n ramp,” het Stern bygevoeg. )Vier Vrystaatse plase is in kwarantyn nadat

There will be hundreds of labels, cultivars, blends and vintages at The Boardwalk between the 4th and 6th of August. According to editor of Wine Extra magazine and consultant to the Tops at Spar Wine Show, Maryna Strachan, the true magic occurs in the vineyards. “Wine grown in the same soil, using the same techniques, can taste completely different year on year. Mother Nature plays a significant role, so the temperature, rainfall, hail and other weather conditions affect the end-product quite dramatically,” said Strachan. One of wine’s best tricks is the illusion that you’re tasting elements not actually found in

the wine. Grass and green peppers or coffee and cassis were not mixed with the soil or wine at all. These are the result of terroir meets varietal. “Just the right amount of minerals in the soil, heat, wind, sun and rain can enhance the properties of wine. Inside the barrel, more flavour is infused into the wine and is influenced by the choice in cooper, the drying process of the wood, and how toasted the inside of the barrel was.” To learn more about the magic of wine – its provenance, art and science – visit the Tops at Spar Wine Show in Port Elizabeth from 4-6 August at The Boardwalk. Changing lives of fellow learners The Adam Goodwill Ambassadors led by Mihlali Adam from St Georges School and Litha Adam from Grey High School, once again went out of their way in changing lives of needy learners. “We basically used our savings to purchase shoes. We thought of changing lives of our fellow learners who are vulnerable. We wish to make them smile again,” said Litha Adam, who initiated the Adam Goodwill ambassadors. “Indeed, we want to restore ubuntu and the learners’ dignity by doing good. Particularly to those who are still at school as they are our future leaders, who have to deal with poverty. “We want to bring hope, as with God anything is possible and by faith you can have a better future. As Tata Madiba said, educa-

tion can free us all,” said Mihlali Adam. The principal of Nomathamsa Primary School, Mr Maqungo, said, “We are grateful to these young boys for helping our children. The unemployment rate in Despatch is very high and our learners really appreciate receiving these shoes, as well as shirts, trousers and white rugby shorts. “These Adam Goodwill Ambassador boys are really living a meaningful life from a very young age. We really appreciate them.” The Adam Goodwill Ambassadors wish to send words of gratitude to their friends who donated shirts, shorts and trousers and in helping make the day a success. VW SHOW OF HANDS VOLUNTEER PROGRAMME

Lives of learners changed by facility upgrade Volkswagen volunteers living the spirit of Madiba International Mandela Day encourages South Africans to give 67 minutes of their time to help make a difference in the community they live and work in. Volkswagen Group South Africa’s Show of Hands volunteers dedicated 300 minutes of their time and skills painting and gardening at Ntlemeza Primary School in Kwanobuhle, Uitenhage last Saturday. This International Nelson Mandela Day volunteer action marks the 16th community volunteer project initiated by Volkswagen since 2011 in its Show of Hands employee volunteerism campaign. More than 1 500 employees have participated in the campaign to date. School in state of disrepair Ntlemeza Primary School has 350 learners from Grade R to Grade 7 and the school buildings were in a serious state of disrepair before VWSA intervened.Basic conditions such as working toilets with doors and classrooms with smooth floors were non-existent and in dire need of repair. The Show of Hands initiative focused on the Grade R Block and the Ablution Block at the school. Contractors assisted the Show of Hands team prior to the event by repair-

Soccer holiday fun to keep kids off the streets For the past three years, young soccer fans in Uitenhage have been having a ball with Swiftresponse, a non-governmental organisation, using soccer as a means of community development. Ade Adekunle established Swiftresponse with the aim to keep youngsters off the streets, especially during holidays, thereby

trying to reduce boredom and possible involvement in criminal activities. “By engaging in soccer activities, we wish to prevent the youth from becoming victims of crimes. Their vulnerability put them at high risk,” said Adekunle. “We educate participants. Every time we come together, it is classwork before fieldwork and training. The young ones should

know their rights in all areas of life to enable them to understand what they are entitled to and what they are legally not entitled to. “Apart from teaching them to kick goals, we try to empower them in formulating their own life goals. We try to assist where we can so that they achieve those goals, hence becoming useful to themselves, the community and to the country,” said Adekunle.

The youths are engaged through the year, with special holiday programmes. The latest training week was held last week at Jubilee Park sports fields. Safety shoes donated to OJ’s charity shop A total of 100 pairs of safety shoes were donated to Oosterland Youth Centre to be sold at the OJ’s charity shop. Ronel Joubert from Bagshaw Footwear in Port Elizabeth, handed over the shoes to the director of Oosterland Child and Youth Care Centre, Riaan Marais. It was donated as part of the enterprise and supplier development B-BBEE element of Bagshaw Footwear to be sold at the charity shop as part of the income generating focus of Oosterland. According to Marais, the Oosterland Trust was recently established consisting of various Oosterland income generating projects

including the Oosterland Opstal catering business, Oosterland hiring business, vegetable tunnels and OJ’s Charity Shop. “The Trust is viewed as a B-BBEE level 2 with 125% recognition as verified by BEE BIZZ, an independent verification agency. Businesses are now able to receive recognition towards their enterprise and supplier development B-BBEE element for donations made towards the Trust,” said Marais. ith many millennials deciding not to leave home after completing their studies, larger family properties with a “grannyflat” or garden cottage have regained much of their popularity in recent times. “These additional spaces, especially when they include a kitchen and a bathroom, are of course also a plus for families that wish to accommodate older relatives, or need to generate some extra income to help pay their bond now that interest rates are rising,” says Jan Davel, MD of the RealNet estate agency group. “And they definitely do add value when the time comes to sell the property, but homeowners who are currently thinking of building a new granny-flat or cottage must first make sure that they have proper building plans

drawn and obtain approval from their local authority for a second dwelling on their stand.” A “second dwelling” is defined by most local authorities in SA as any space with a separate kitchen area that can potentially be used to generate rental income, he says. “It can be a separate building on the property or an addition to the existing home, but in order to be approved must usually have its own entrance, bathroom, bedroom and living areas as well as a kitchen. It must also have the same owner as the primary dwelling – that is, it cannot be sold off as a separate home.” Building an attractive space is also important, Davel says. “Having a cottage too close to the outdoor entertainment area or a granny-flat with an obstructed entrance may re-

duce the sale potential of the property. And you need to make sure that there will be sufficient parking space.” Before starting any construction, it is also highly recommended that the homeowner consult a town planner to advise on the most cost effective ways to connect the new dwelling to the council’s existing electricity, water and sewerage infrastructure, and to assist with getting the plans approved. “At the same time, it’s important to get quotes from reputable builders in the area so you can estimate what your project is likely to cost – and then ask a knowledgeable local estate agent to help you work out whether the addition would add sufficient value to the property to justify this expenditure.” Indeed, he says, careful budgeting is a vital

part of the entire process. “If you’re considering a rentable space, you should also talk to your local agent about whether there would be demand for a granny-flat or cottage in your area and about finding the right tenants. “Remember that the rent needs to be reasonable as well as profitable, and make sure that you include the estimated additional water and electricity usage in your calculations (or the cost of installing separate or pre-paid meters), as well as any ‘extras’ such as DSTV or internet costs. Also, rental income is taxable so you should make provision for that too. “When creating a second dwelling stand to gain a significant increase in the value of your property in the long term, make sure it will be a cost-effective investment in the interim.” (Issued by RealNet)
