Warm gesture towards the destitute “W

inter is coming!” A phrase often heard by fans of the television series Game of Thrones. In Uitenhage however, Winter is here! The mercury is dropping to an average of less than 9°C at night. Add the inclemency of the rain and this translates to extremely cold and miserable nights. “Fortunately for many people, they are able to stay dry and wrap themselves in warm blankets in their beds. The destitute and poor however have a real struggle to keep warm

and stay alive,” said Manoj Karsan, president of the Rotary Club of Uitenhage South. This Club is again embarking on its annual “Winter Nights” project as part of their ongoing efforts to help the less fortunate in Uitenhage to get some relief in the form of warm blankets and clothing. “The Club hopes to repeat the success of last year where they received many donations from the generous citizens of Uitenhage, together with a fantastic award from BASF. More than 3 000 people were assisted.

“The club hopes with your help, once again to reach out to a large number of those in need,” said Karsan. How can you help? The Club will be holding a vigil from 18:00 to 21:00 on Friday, August 19th at the Engen Penford Convenience Centre in Graaff Reinet Road. The public are kindly requested to donate clothing, blankets or anything that will alleviate the plight of the poor during the cold winter weather. – HEILIE COMBRINCK

ay back in 1887, it took six Dominican Sisters only three days to open two schools in Uitenhage - these schools were the forerunners of the current Uitenhage Convent Primary. The Dominican Foundation, which is part of the Order of Preachers, has for the past 153 years played a dominant role in education in South Africa. Uitenhage Convent Primary, one of the Dominican schools, last week gave recognition to the 800 years’ influence on education across the globe, by the Order of Preachers. “A Dominican Foundation in Africa was established by the Dominican Convent in Cabra, Ireland, during the 1860s. The first Dominican Sisters arrived at the Cape during 1863 and immediately began to establish schools,” said Wenda Marsh, a former staff member at Uitenhage Convent Primary, who has an extended knowledge of the history of the Order of the Preachers. “By 1867, the first Dominican Schools had been established in the Eastern Cape. Eventually in 1887, six Sisters headed to Uitenhage =Learners of Uitenhage Convent Primary formed the number 800 in celebration of the 800 years of influence across the globe by the Order of Preachers. School were founded in the early 1920s.” To ensure the future of Dominican schools, a Catholic School’s Trust has been established to safeguard the Dominican legacy. )St Reginald Roman Catholic Primary School in Kirkwood is the youngest of the Dominican schools in South Africa, founded in 1946. Their 70th anniversary is being celebrated this year.

he Youth Citizens Actions Programme (Y-CAP) national championships took place at Faircity Roodevallei Hotel in Pretoria East, where Solomon Mahlangu High School from KwaNobuhle came third out of nine provinces. Provincial rounds were held throughout the country, at 400 schools, comprising over 4 000 learners, which were registered to compete in the 2016 Y-CAP programme. Only 18 teams were selected as national finalists as their projects were the most impactful and sustainable, with Solomon Mahlangu representing the Eastern Cape. “I am thrilled that our Solomon Mahlangu 2016 Y-CAP team came in third in the national rounds. They represented Eastern Province Department of Education,” said Olwen Carson, social worker at Solomon Mahlangu. “They gave a very powerful presentation about Poverty in Education, which was well received. The team leader was the last participant to do a presentation. We could hear the anticipation of the audience, as Solomon Mahlangu produced last year’s national champions!” said Carson. The 2016 Solomon Mahlangu Y-CAP team won R5 000 to be spent on developing their project. “It will be used to purchase the necessary equipment for parents to use to develop a vegetable garden on the school site where they will be helped by our Agricultural Science

classes and the teacher to grow vegetables to help them generate an income. “A very high percentage of our learners come from homes where no one is employed,” said Carson. At school they are donating jerseys to destitute learners and waiting for their next order of jerseys to be delivered. The Solomon Mahlangu Y-CAP team will soon be invited to present their project at a principals’ meeting, which will be attended by about 200 primary and high school principals. According to Carson, they have already

presented their project to the MEC for Education, who led the audience in a standing ovation! The Solomon Mahlangu Y-CAP team consists of Spogter Lubabalo (team leader), Erasmus Sinokhanyo, Hlatshwayo Kamvalethu, Conini Aluncedo, Damoyi Siphosethu and Ntshiza Phelisa. )Lerato–Uthando Comprehensive School from Harrismith won. They tackled the challenge of lack of access to sanitary pads, which was causing girls to drop out of school as they missed school each month and fell behind in their academic performance.

High density police operations were conducted over the past weekend in the Uitenhage Cluster and more than 136 suspects have been arrested. Ten arrests were made for driving under the influence of liquor and traffic fines valued at more than R9 000 were issued. Twelve persons were arrested and detained after illegal drugs were found in their possession. A total of 68 fines were issued for other liquor related crimes. Karsan to lead Rotary Club “Watch this space,” says Manoj Karsan, the new president of the Rotary Club of Uitenhage South. With no election hullabaloo or unachievable promises Karsan was elected as the 43rd president of the Rotary Club of Uitenhage South. He is the successor to outgoing president, Marilyn Klassen. Manoj has already started leading the Rotary Club to continue partaking in various service and upliftment projects amongst the Uitenhage/Despatch communities in need through a programme based on fun and fellowship. This is done through aligning the Club with the Rotary International goal for 2016-2017 of “Rotary Serving Humanity”, whilst continuing to embrace the Rotary

motto of “Service Above Self”. Among the achievements of the Rotary Club during Past President Klassen’s year which was of particularly significance to her, was the establishment of a Rotaract Club for people under the age of 30. This club has already made its presence felt in the Uitenhage/Despatch area with the motto of “Service To Others”. Another noteworthy accomplishment of the club in the past year, was the provision of warm items and blankets to more than 3 000 people in need, where a substantial international sponsorship was received from BASF. Old Skoolers fun run this Saturday The Old Skoolers have one thing in mind, they want to bring along positive change in support of their Alma Mater. Now in existence for almost a year, this non-profit organisation was established by former learners from McCarthy Comprehensive Secondary School in Uitenhage. “This beautiful school sadly has been subjected to acts of vandalism over the years,” said Denver Hendricks, a member of the Old Skoolers. “We as the proud products of this school have decided to stop waiting for some-

thing to happen, but rather make it happen ourselves.” Their next project is to paint some parts/departments of McCarthy school and to convert a classroom into a computer room as Volkswagen South Africa Community Trust has sponsored 30 Towers (Computer Boxes) towards the project. Elke dorp sal met die hulp van ’n keuringsproses die geleentheid gegun word om self te besluit watter kind by die fonds sal baat. Standard triathlon series debut for Bay

Nelson Mandela Bay, the home of IRONMAN in Africa, has received another triathlon boost with the addition of the Standard Bank 5150 Nelson Mandela Bay and Standard Bank Sprint set to take place in November. The hugely popular standard distance triathlon series now makes its debut in Nelson Mandela Bay with the race set to take place on Sunday, 20 November at King’s Beach. The 5150 triathlon takes the format of an Olympic distance triathlon featuring a 1.5km swim, 40km bike and 10km run. This totals a distance of 51.50km hence, the name 5150 pronounced, fifty-one-fifty.

It all is happening this Saturday at the SQP Cars & Coffee Show in North End at Speedyquip, 3 Prince Alfred Road from 08:00 until 12:00. “It is of interest to all as a great meet and greet opportunity,” said Derek Elliott, one of the organisers of the SQP Cars & Coffee Show. Among the many vehicles there will be a highly sought after British classic, namely a 1960 MGA Mk2 Roadster, in its original condition. Some of the other British classic cars to view include a Jaguar E-type and Austin Healey 3000. The Animal Welfare Society will be selling their tasty hamburgers, boerewors rolls and other treats from their stall. )Entrance is free. For more information contact 041 484 1506.

Al tien skuts is lede van die Kwagga-boogskietklub en is vir die Suid-Afrikaanse Centre Shot span gekies wat teen ander lande se ontwikkelingspanne meegeding het. Die plaaslike skuts het uitstekend gevaar en was die wenners van die spankompetisies in die 2D- (bull’s eye) en 3D-afdelings. Hiermee is hulle dan wêreldkampioene in hierdie

afdelings en hulle het ook goue medaljes vir hulle prestasies ontvang. Agt van dié leerders is van die Hoër Tegniese Skool Daniel Pienaar, met een leerder elk van die Hoërskool Brandwag en Hoërskool Despatch. Monré Crouse van die HTS Daniel Pienaar het uitstekend gevaar in die individuele afdelings. Hy wen ’n goue medalje in die 2D en ‘n brons medalje in die 3D. Monré het ‘n gemiddelde telling van 283.2 uit 300 oor die ses rondtes in die 2D-afdeling behaal.
