ixty years ago, more than 20 000 South African women of all races staged a march in protest against the “pass laws”. This display of female solidarity and inner fortitude led the country forward and is celebrated each year during the month of August. For 30 minutes, on the 9th of August 1956, these women stood silently before singing a protest song, Now you have touched the women, you have struck a rock. In celebration of the universal rock-solid spirit
of women empowerment, the Jeeva Foundation - committed to philanthropy and charitable work - hosted a Women’s Month event in Uitenhage. “We paid homage to the real pillars of our communities and of our families. Our very brave mothers, grandmothers and sisters who are now in the golden age of their lives,” said Munir Jeeva, of Jeeva Foundation and CEO of Afri-Save. This year the Jeeva Foundation has selected Makukhanye, a non-government service centre for senior citizens in KwaNobuhle, Despatch and Rosedale, as beneficiary for its Women’s Month celebrations. “I can tell you a woman sleeps fewer hours

Currently the women get-together at various homes or we have to rent a hall. Houses are too small and halls too expensive. So we really need the blessings of a venue for the elderly,” said Mgwali. Makukhanye’s co-ordinator, Felicity Sididi, said another problem the centre has to deal with is not having transport to get to different venues. At the event, the Jeeva Foundation provided the women with groceries and electric heaters.

According to Malise Terblanche, UHPTTA’s spokesperson, “a recipe book featuring recipes contributed by different people associated with the school will be launched at the brunch.” The book is unique as it contains various recipes, each with its own special memory of people and their time at Uitenhage High. Faith started as an in-service trainee and has worked her way from a technician in the process lab, to the production line and into leadership. As a wife and mother of 4 she knows how to juggle work and home life. Lions’ District Governor scrapbook best in country HEILIE COMBRINCK
S
crapbooking is the art of preserving and presenting memorabilia. Actually, a method of capturing history in a more visual-friendly manner. For service clubs like the Lions Club of Southern Africa, scrapbooking is fundamental. It is a showcase of its clubs’ involvement in their respective communities, through living the Lions’ motto “We Serve”. Bokkie Oberholzer from Despatch is the District Governer of Lions District 410-D, comprising 29 Lions Clubs, stretching from Zastron in the southern Free State, all the way down to Swellendam in the Western Cape. Oberholzer’s scrapbook, depicting what he and the 29 Clubs in his District have done during his term, was nominated as the best Lions District Governor scrapbook in South Africa for 20152016. The scrapbook was compiled by his wife, Lioness Marie Oberholzer, who through the book made it possible for her husband to relive his year as District Governor. “It was hard work. Sometimes I sat until 01:00 cutting and pasting, having all done in a chronological order. But I loved it. It is a tremendous honour being elected as District Governor,” said Marie. She also contributed to the Uitenhage Lions Club having won the best scrapbook in District 410-D numerous times. The content of Bokkie’s District Governor scrapbook is of such magnitude that Marie battled to get the thick 12 kg book together. Whilst it has screws to keep it intact it was, however, necessary for her to take it to the upholsterers to have it professionally bound. While one page through the scrapbook it tells the story (and shows pictures) of the dedication with which Bokkie served as District Governor. It tells also of the Clubs serving their communities with pride, one thing in mind, to bring along positive change. Bokkie and Marie flew to Durban, where the four District Governors’ scrapbooks were judged. One of the judges apparently told Marie, “I can see the passion in this scrapbook. It is outstanding, I can live Lions by paging through it.” Marie said, “To hear that, made it worth all the effort. It was a nice journey, we really enjoyed it. Now it is for paging through the book, remembering all the stories, wonderful people and unforgettable experiences we were able to enjoy as proud Lions.” )There are 4 Lions Districts in South Africa, District 420-A (Western Cape), District 410-B (Gauteng & Mpumalanga), District 410-C (Kwa-Zulu-Natal & Free State) and District 410-D (Eastern, Southern & parts of Western Cape). Science centre a beacon of hope for learners T
he Uitenhage-based Nelson Mandela Bay Science and Technology Centre is hosting a National Science Week, to intensify the drive in promoting science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) in poorly resourced schools and communities. Science shows and exhibits on renewable energy, energy saving tips, as well as the saving and recycling of water kick-started the Uitenhage Despatch Development Initiative’s (UDDI) National Science Week (NSW) activities under the theme science for sustainable development. An initiative of the Department of Science and Technology (DST), NSW involves various role players conducting science-based activities until August 13th. Through its Nelson Mandela Bay Science and Technology Centre, the UDDI is targeting more than 1 000 learners from 20 schools (16 in Nelson Mandela Bay and 4 in Humansdorp) with its NSW activities. UDDI Chief Executive Officer Patricia Dlamini says, “Our participation in this countrywide celebration of science shows our commitment to extend the reach of STEM-related support programmes in the region.” “While our focus on education and skills development will largely remain on capacitating Nelson Mandela Bay’s poorly resourced schools; we are excited to have expanded our NSW line-up to include Humansdorp,” Dlamini says. “Our long-standing partnership with the South African Agency for Science and Technology Advancement (SAASTA) continues to help our efforts to enhance learner participation and performance in STEM, nurture youth talent and potential, and also provide career guidance in STEM-based disciplines in Nelson Mandela Bay while extending to the broader region. “We therefore continue to benefit from SAASTA’s R500 000 annual injection for the science centre operations. “However, in the past year, we have also attracted close to R1 million from external partners such as Vodacom, Continental Tyres and Eskom Development Foundation towards equipment, infrastructure, as well as operational and programmatic support,” says Dlamini. the public attended the Career Expo and a further 1 054 learners and 35 educators participated in our Scifest activities,” he says. While the centre has a core team responsible for curriculum development and delivery of curriculum support programmes, “a sixmember team of science communicators is at the heart of the science centre’s programmes,” adds Singathwa Poswa, spearheading the science centre’s outreach programmes. “They all have science-related degrees and are employed on 12-month contracts as part of the Department of Science and Technology’s Youth into Science Programme.” Since its launch in 2013, the Nelson Mandela Bay Science and Technology Centre has reached more than 38 000 learners, educators and members of the public through in-house and outreach programmes as well as industry events. Forthcoming events The science centre will be hosting several events in the coming months: schools’ arts and culture event on 25-26 August, SAEON Symposium on 7 September and an innovation event planned for October.

Brandwag het tydens dié toernooi met Worcester Gimnasium, Bonnievale, Upington, Jim Fouché en Duineveld afgereken. Op die Despatch Sportfees het Brandwag ook teen Hangklip, Gill College, DF Malherbe en Cradock gewen. In derby wedstryde was Brandwag baas teen Despatch, Pearson, Collegiate, Nico Malan en Oudtshoorn. Brandwag se eerstespan-afrigter, Karen Schonken, glo die sukses van dié span is te danke aan ’n proses van talentontwikkeling wat reeds op o.14-vlak begin. Suspects behind bars after high density operations Police officials in the Uitenhage Cluster have arrested more than 145 suspects, through high density operations that were conducted over the past weekend. A total of 34 traffic fines were issued, valued at more than R17 000.
Suspects were arrested for charges relating to robbery, assault with the intent to do grievous bodily harm, theft and possession of suspected stolen goods. Only one arrest was made for driving under the influence of liquor, whilst 19 persons
were arrested and detained after illegal drugs were found in their possession. A total of 72 fines were issued for other liquor related crimes. Police in the Uitenhage Cluster will continue to address crime effectively.

HEILIE COMBRINCK ’n Wasgoedpennetjie-kompetisie vir bejaardes in rolstoele is vanjaar vir die eerste keer op Uitenhage aangebied as deel van die Age-in-Action program om lewenskwaliteit van dié senior burgers te help bevorder. Elva van Zyl, van die departement van maatskaplike ontwikkeling, waar sy die distriks-koördineerder is vir dienste aan bejaardes, het dié aktiwiteit by ACVV Aandmymering bygewoon en was verheug oor die deelname. “Hierdie is ’n manier om bejaardes aan te moedig om aktief te bly, hulle spiere aan die gang te hou en veral die hand-oog-koördinasie te stimuleer. Dit is belangrik vir hulle mens-

waardigheid en in die algemeen om hul lewenskwaliteit te verbeter. “Daarby is dit sommer gratis terapie vir ons mense in rolstoele. Oefening help dat hulle hul onafhanklikheid behou en self oor die weg kom,” sê Van Zyl. Die kompetisie behels twee wasgoedlyne, ’n meter uitmekaar en 1.2 meter hoog, met wasgoedpennetjies aan die een lyn vasgeknyp. Deelnemers in rolstoele sit tussen die lyne en dan word daar gekyk wie kan die meeste wasgoedpennetjies in ’n minuut, van een lyn na ’n ander oorknip. Deelnemers was van Uitenhage en Port Elizabeth. Dit was uiteindelik die haan onder die henne, Willem de Klerk (64) van Louis Dubb tehuis, wat gewen het. Hy het 29 wasgoedpennetjies in ’n minuut oorgeknip en gaan nou die Nelson Mandela Metropool verteenwoordig op

provinsiale vlak. “Ek was eintlik bietjie geworry, want ek het gehoor hierdie vroue knyp 33 wasgoedpennetjies in ’n minuut vas,” het De Klerk gesê, wie se bene in 2006 geamputeer is. “Laasjaar het ek my eerste goue medalje op die nasionale spele [Golden Games] gewen. Dit was na drie jaar se oefen! Die truuk is, hou jou oog op die pennetjie en hou die lyne stil.” In die Age-in-Action aktiwiteite gaan dit nie soseer oor kompetisie nie, maar deelname en sosiale interaksie. Van Zyl sê, “Dit is goed as bejaardes sosiaal verkeer met mense buite hulle bekende omgewing. Die program is regtig suksesvol en het ’n positiewe impak op bejaardes se lewens. Ons kry jaarliks al meer inskrywings en dit is absoluut ’n belewenis om te sien hoe op-enwakker en aktief van die bejaardes is. “Die bestuur van ACVV Aandmymering het vir ons weereens gewys wat moontlik is.
Dit is so belangrik dat bejaardes in tehuise aangemoedig word om van waarde te wees, van waarde te voel en om hulle waardigheid te behou,” het Van Zyl gesê. Die ACVV Aandmymering Age-in-Action deelnemers word afgerig deur Leonen Wonni Davis. Vanjaar se Golden Games provinsiale ronde, waaraan die Age-in-Action wenners uit 7 distrikte gaan deelneem, word in September in Oos-Londen gehou. Daar is selfs ’n bejaarde mans- sowel as vroue- sokkerspan wat gaan deelneem. Die Golden Games nasionale spele word gedurende Oktober in Limpopo gehou. In 2014 was die Oos-Kaap die wenners van die nasionale spele en verlede jaar die naaswenners. Die Golden Games is een van die grootste internasionale programme vir bejaardes, maar Suid-Afrika het nog nie op dié vlak begin deelneem nie.

Don’t let rate hikes slice property profits M
unicipal rates and service charges have just gone up again in cities and towns all around the country and that is not only going to mean higher running costs for homeowners, but higher holding costs for home sellers. So says Berry Everitt, CEO of the Chas Everitt International group, who notes, “At the moment, our experience is that there are many empty-nesters eager to downsize from their large family homes in order to cut their monthly expenses and put the savings towards their retirement plans, and we expect this round of municipal increases to amplify this trend. “What is more, there is good demand for their properties from developers as well as younger buyers with growing families, so it is quite possible for them to sell quite quickly – provided that they seek the advice of a qualified and experienced estate agent to help them set a realistic, market-related asking price.” Writing in the latest Property Signpost newsletter, he says that the latest round of
municipal increases make it all the more important for prospective sellers to guard against overpricing. “Potential buyers will just avoid any properties they regard as overpriced and these homes will then stick in the market, causing the owners’ holding costs to mount up and eat into their potential profits.” Holding costs include everything you have to pay to own and run your home, such as the bond repayment, insurance, maintenance costs, any monthly levy that you pay and, of course, municipal rates and service charges. And, as Everitt says, these can add up to a substantial total each month, so once you’ve
decided to sell, it makes sense to do so as fast as possible and not keep paying that amount to live in a home you no longer require. “Looked at another way, every month’s delay in selling your home effectively diminishes the profit you stand to make on the sale, and it does not make sense to hold out for an unrealistic asking price on the one hand while losing money on the other. “If your holding costs total R25 000 a month, for example, and your asking price is R100 000 above the current market value, any benefit that you might have derived by achieving that higher price will soon be completely eroded. “Your property may still be unsold and still

racking up holding costs, because even keen buyers with all their finances in order are extremely price and value conscious at the moment. They will just ignore listings that they regard as overpriced properties.” On the other hand, he says, sellers who work with a reputable agent who can help them get their asking price “just right” will sell their homes in the shortest possible time and maximise their potential profit. Passat sets new SA ‘single tank’ record The new Volkswagen Passat 1.4 TSI DSG has set a new South African record by a petrol passenger car of driving over 2000km on a single tank. The Passat drove a distance of 2 029 km from the South African and Zimbabwean border gate in Beit Bridge to Moorreesburg – about 90km north of Cape Town – in two and half days. Lede van Despatch Atletiekklub hardloop nie net om fiks te bly nie, maar het ook die afgelope ses maande rondgehol met verskeie fondsinsamelings ten bate van dié gewilde klub. Met fondse wat ingesamel is, sowel as die hulp van borge wat finansieël hand bygesit het, kon die klub ‘n sleepwaentjie en ’n gazebo aanskaf. Dié toerusting word weekliks gebruik tydens die klub se wedlope as-ook tydens klubfunksies. Die Atletiekklub hou op Saterdag, 10 September, vir die vierde agtereenvolgende jaar, hulle Despatch Superspar 10km padwedloop en Klinicare 5km pretloop. Inskrywingsvorms sal eersdaags beskikbaar wees op Despatch en Uitenhage. (Heilie Combrinck)
