Excitement mounts for VW run

ollowing the success of the VW 5km Fun Run in Uitenhage which has seen over 1 000 participants since the inaugural event in 2015, the Volkswagen Athletics Club has decided to take things further by continuing with the 10km version. The EP-recognised race takes place on Saturday and will see runners and enthusiasts starting at the PeoplePavilion, turning to Despatch, running a lap

of the VW Test Track (which is not normally open to the public) and then finishing back at the PeoplePavilion. There is also a 5km Fun Run, which will see participants running from the PeoplePavilion and around the Volkswagen Factory, finishing back at the PeoplePavilion. “At Volkswagen we promote a healthy lifestyle and that is why as a runner myself I endorse this VW 10km

race,” said Thomas Schaefer, Volkswagen Group South Africa Chairman and Managing Director. “This race along with many other sporting events hosted at the PeoplePavilion this year ensures that VWSA’s investment of R30 million into this facility continues to pay off as we are now able to host top-class events at our factories’ doorstep,” concluded Schaefer. Campbells to perform at VW Market Day The VW Market Day will be held at the VW PeoplePavilion on Saturday, hosting various activities and lots of entertainment. It coincides with the annual VW 5km Fun Run & 10km Road Race, of which the start and finish will be at the PeoplePavilion. Thus it is important note that there will be road closures prior to 09:00. One of the highlights of the day is the performance by the Campbells at 11:00. The entertainment programme also includes local

artist and LuisterFM presenter Gerrit de Jager, Chantel Bosch (currently number 1 on the top 30 local Afrikaans artists), Gerhard Pace with his new CD (currently number 2 on the top 30), Karina Pattinson and the 10 year old Ru-an. Other activities of the day inclue free kiddies entertainment like train car rides, face paint, jumping castle and a jungle gym. There will be 150 stalls and a big screen to watch the sport of the day.

Police arrest armed robbers in KwaNobuhle Members in the Uitenhage Cluster are continuing to curb crime effectively with the arrest of three suspected robbers last Thursday. According to Captain Gerda Swart, “five armed men entered a premises at Ngwamza Avenue, KwaNobuhle and demanded cash from the complainant. The complainant handed an undisclosed amount of cash over to the suspects and they also took cellphones and electronic equipment before exiting the house.” <One of the unlicensed firearms (9mm pistols) with ammunition which were seized by police.

Meanwhile, police officials from SAPS KwaNobuhle on patrol noticed the suspicious behaviour at the home. The suspects started shooting at police officials who returned fire. The Uitenhage K9 Unit assisted and responded to the complaint and within minutes three suspects were arrested and two unlicensed firearms (two 9mm pistols) with ammunition were seized. The three suspects (aged 27, 29 and 39) were detained and appeared in the Kwanobuhle Magistrate’s Court on Monday. They face charges ranging from house robbery,and the illegal possession of unlicensed

firearms and ammunition. No one was injured during the shootout. Police are in search of the two other outstanding suspects and will follow up on all possible leads. Kwanobuhle Station Commander, Colonel Zolani Xawuka praised his members and commented: “I thank the members for their dedication and commitment and urge all SAPS members to continue to clamp down on armed and violent criminals”. “We need to continue to rid our communities of illegal firearms, because these weapons most often are used in the commission of criminal acts”.

Drinking water down the drain

t sounds like a waterfall. And it has been like that for nearly a year now. Millions of litres of drinking water flowing down the drain from the Scheepershoogte reservoir in Uitenhage. “Water restriction once again is looming. And we know that 40% of the water allocated for Nelson Mandela Bay Metropole gets lost through leakages. This is not a crisis, this is a disaster,” said Councillor Pieter Terblanche from Uitenhage. “Yes, we know about the Scheepershoogte problem. It’s been like that for the past year. We’ve reported it numerous times and each time the answer is ‘sorry we do not have valves’ or ‘sorry there is no plumber to assist’.” Apart from the water streaming from the reservoir, the lid on top of the reservoir has been removed and there is no security fence. The water flows from the reservoir, down the valley between Valleisig and Scheepershoogte, past the Gillespie Street waste dropoff site, underneath Union Avenue towards the polluted Swartkops River.

An announcement regarding water restrictions in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro will soon be made, the metro’s new mayor, Athol Trollip, said at a news conference held on Tuesday on issues regarding Nelson Mandela Bay’s water supply and –infrastructure. “For now we appeal to the public to curb their water usage. All residents are requested to monitor their water consumption, and be water wise – for example, don’t use the hose to wash your car. “ According to him, good water management is of the utmost importance to avoid future punitive measures for those who exceed their water quotas, should it be necessary to establish quotas. “The water crisis affects all residents. Should punitive measures have to be applied, it will impact especially the poor. “Therefore, apart from our appeal to the public, we also appeal to the department of infrastructure, engineering and electricity to better its water management. Water leakages also need to be urgently addressed – the metropole’s crumbling infrastructure makes this a massive challenge,” Trollip said Referring once again to the urgent need for a water wise Nelson Mandela Bay, Trollip warned that residents could

face a serious water crisis in the forthcoming summer season if the taps keep on flowing freely. Trollip explained that the Metro is also supplies water to communities outside the municipal boundaries. According to him, the tariff structures for the latter needs to be revisited , to resolve the discrepancy between the cost of delivering the water and what is being paid by these “outside” consumers to the municipality. “It is time to have a more integrated assessment system to establish the exact volume of water subtracted from dams and the exact volume being distributed through the municipal infrastructure to the users,” Trollip added. Referring to the Nooitgedacht water scheme, Trollip said a concerted effort will be put in to complete the scheme up to phase 3. “When this is achieved, Nelson Mandela Bay won’t be that much dependent on good rainfall to quench the Metro’s thirst. A quest for enough adequately trained plumbers, deployed all over the metropole, will also form part of the war on water leaks, Trollip added. “And should there be any shortages of plumbers in a certain area where there expertise is urgently needed, we will deploy teams from areas where there are adequate numbers of plumbers.”

here will be no melodrama in Uitenhage this year. But, camaraderie there will be in the format of the Uitenhage Lions Club steak evening. “This fund-raiser is vital. We as a Club are to support Lions International Club to achieve the target in serving 100 million people on our centennial service date of end of June 2018,” said André Minnie, the president of the Uitenhage Lions Club. During the term 1 July 2014 to 30 June 2015, the local Lions and their family members numbering 464 served a total of 6 074 hours finalising 37 service projects for the communities of Uitenhage and Despatch. “Therefore the Club views the steak evening as critical in order for us to assist LCI in support of the centennial service challenge. “Hopefully we can repeat our achievements of the previous term,” said Minnie. In order for Lions Clubs International to reach the goal of serving 100 million people by the end of June 2018, all 1.5 million

members in 208 countries and regions worldwide have accepted the challenge to provide a service to those less fortunate than themselves. “At present over 86 million people have benefited, but the clock is ticking,” said Minnie. Steak evening The Uitenhage Lions Club will host its steak evening at the Despatch Rugby Club. All funds raised will go towards the Centennial Service Challenge. The steak evening will be held on Friday, August 26 at 18:00 for 18:30. The cost is R100 per person which includes a T–bone steak with pepper sauce, salad and a roll. Local charities benefit from VW Community Trust

nder the flagship Volkswagen for Good initiative, charities and communitybased sporting associations have received a much-needed financial boost from the VW Community Trust. Ikhala Trust, Ilitha Lemfundo Educational Enhancement Centre, Star of Hope RFC, Ubomi Obutsha Centre, Port Elizabeth Mental Health Society, KwaNobuhle and Despatch Football Association, Judo Institute For People With Special Needs, Komga United RFC and Wildlife Environment Society of South Africa will be sharing the R923 450 which was handed over at the Volkswagen factory in Uitenhage. “This cheque handover forms part of the R15-million that we will be investing on CSI initiatives this year alone,” said Thomas Schaefer, Volkswagen Group South Africa Chairman and Managing Director. “It is our hope as a company that this donation will alleviate some of the financial burdens and also uplift our community in the Metro and the Eastern Cape through the commendable work done by these organisations.” The Volkswagen for Good initiative has a strong focus on positively impacting education, youth development, enterprise development, health, community and wellbeing. The Despatch and Uitenhage based beneficiaries: Ilitha Educational Enhancement Centre, based in KwaNobuhle, addresses the challenge of high failure rate of Grade 12s. In 2015, schools assisted by the centre achieved a Matric pass rate of 95% with five distinctions and 52% of those learners now qualify for University entry requirements. The late Dr Rev Gqubule won multiple awards for his excellent work in Education and the Project will continue as a legacy programme. Star of Hope RFC was founded in 1927 and has continued to serve the youth of KwaNobuhle, Uitenhage and surrounding areas. Unieke slaghuisontwikkeling op Uitenhage HEILIE COMBRINCK “Ek is pure hoendervleis. En dit is nie omdat ek hier by die yskaste staan nie. Dit is van trots, oor ’n sakeman se keuse om sy multimiljoen rand besigheid op Uitenhage uit te brei en nie soos ander, weg te trek Baai toe nie.” Dit was die woorde van Gerrit de Jager, ’n omroeper by LuisterFM, met sy professie in die boubedryf, tydens die amptelike opening van Leon Slabbert se 15 miljoen rand Cuyler Butchery slaghuis-ontwikkeling op Uitenhage. Dié slaghuis-ontwikkeling is uniek in die Oos-Kaap en bestaan uit verskillende afdelings wat elkeen onafhanklik funksioneer. So is daar ’n biltong deli, sekerlik die enigste van sy soort waar jy met connoisseur biltong én ’n ontwerper onderbroek kan uitstap, ’n ruim slaghuiswinkel met ’n seleksie kruideniersware, aparte produksielyne vir vark, hoender en bees/skaap en reuse koelkamers. Cuyler Butchery het ook sy eie ontbeningsfasiliteit, ’n afdeling vir verwerkte vleise (koue vleise), verpakkings- en versendings-afdeling. Vir sy kliënte is daar ruim en veilige privaat parkering. “Die kern van my besigheid is op die oomblik die publiek wat hier inkom om vleis te

koop. As ek sê ek het ’n R8 miljoen besigheid dan is R5 miljoen daarvan danksy die voete wat hier inkom,” sê Leon Slabbert, wie se voorgeslagte ook in die slaghuisbedryf was. “Alhoewel dié ratio vinnig besig is om te verander, is daar nie ’n manier dat ek my kliënte gaan drop om van vooraf ’n besigheid in die Baai te begin nie. “Dit het Cuyler Butchery 25 jaar gevat om te kom waar ons vandag is.” Sedert die sentrum in volle kapasiteit begin sake doen het, was dit vir Slabbert duidelik dat nóg uitbreiding nodig is en dat daar veral geleenthede geskep is vir nog nuwe konsep uitbreidings. “Met 25 ton varke, op een besending, is die nuwe produksielyn (vir varke) klaar te klein. Bestellings het eweskielik begin instroom van oral af. Uit Overberg is ’n staande bestelling van 600kg spek per week geplaas, ’n vleishandelaar van Johannesburg het gehoor van ons nuwe slaghuis en 24 ton vleis bestel vir elke derde week.” Buiten Cuyler Butchery, het Slabbert verskeie ander sakebelange in die oliefilter bedryf, kosmetiese bedryf en eiendomme. Creative school art festival held in Uitenhage The Eastern Cape Department of Education hosted its annual Cluster C Arts Festival and Exhibition in the Uitenhage District. The Foundation and Intermediate Phase exhibitions were at Allanridge Civic Centre with the Senior Phase exhibitions at the Uitenhage Town Hall. Each year, the festival showcases talents and skills of learners from different schools and age groups. Districts as far as Cradock, Graaff Reinet, Fort Beaufort, East London, Grahamstown and Port Elizabeth participated in the event. This year’s theme “Movement ‘76 , as well as the slogan, “Youth can make a difference”, aimed to celebrate the 20 years of democracy. The aim of the exhibition is to help learners to discover talent they did not even know they had and to help them recognize and enjoy art around them. The categories of participation were Dance, Music and Visual Arts.

Peekaboo Preprimary provides a safe and homely schooling experience for children aged 2-6 years. It is owned by Heike Kilian who said, “We strive to create a loving, homely, fun and beautiful environment for all our learners. “With adequate space, healthy balanced meals and lots of extra mural activities our children get the best gross and fine motor development. We keep our classes small because in education quality is definitely more important than quantity. Being a BEd FP graduate I know the importance of individual attention the learners need to receive.” For Heike the needs of the children always come first. “They need to feel loved and really cared for and feel part of our family. It is not a business, but a love to see children grow and learn new skills, be it educational or sociable. “A pre-primary school has always been a dream for me and for it to become a reality was definitely one of the most stressful but most rewarding experiences of my life.” At Peekaboo they strive to get involved in a lot of different community outreach programs. The SPCA is something very close to their hearts and they regularly collect food and visit them. ingle women are now estimated to account for more than a quarter (27%) of all home purchases nationally – and the real estate industry is increasingly taking note of their needs and preferences, different as these are from those of single men or people buying more traditionally as a couple. That’s the word from Jan Davel, MD of the RealNet estate agency group, who says that the increase in the number of single women buyers is in line with the progress SA is making in gender equality and the economic empowerment of women, as indicated in the Women Matter Africa report just released by McKinsey & Co (http://www.mckinsey.com/ global-themes/women-matter/women-matter-africa) and by other recent research. “This shows that Africa – and SA in particular - is actually doing somewhat better than many other parts of the world when it comes to these issues, although equality is obviously still a very long way off. “The point is that because there are more opportunities now for all women to earn more and be financially independent. It is also getting easier for single women to become homeowners – as they are clearly keen to do.

“Of course the reasons they may have for wanting to buy a home can vary widely. “Some may be recently divorced or widowed, some have children and some not, and some may be moving from a family home to a smaller property in order to retire. “However, there are definitely certain needs and preferences that they do have in common, and as they become an increasingly powerful real estate demographic, we expect to see these factors having more overall influence on the shape of the residential market. “For example, while location and security are important to all buyers, single women will pay a premium to live in an area that is not only safe and convenient but also has

a solid sense of community – where they feel welcome and believe they will be able to integrate and interact easily and quickly feel included in what is going on. “Many single women will choose to live in security complexes and estates for the company of near neighbours and the communal facilities as much as the additional security – and may even compromise on the size or cost of their home to do so.” However home design, layout and condition are also all important to single women, Davel says, with the most popular home choices currently being those with at least two bedrooms and two bathrooms, modern kitchens with a good flow and low-maintenance

gardens and finishes. “In addition, single women generally like to see what they are buying, so are less likely to buy off-plan and more likely to buy a preowned home. “What is more, single women tend to be financially astute and practical about what they can afford and/ or how much they want to pay, so they won’t waste time looking at unsuitable properties. New mountain bike challenge at Hayterdale A

new event on the Eastern Cape MTB calendar, the VW Tavcor Commercial Hayterdale Classic, proudly supported by Zakly Investments and Three Oaks Capital takes place on Sunday, August 28th. Hayterdale Trails is a mountain biker’s paradise, having hosted prestige events like the PwC Great Zuurberg Trek, SA National Cross Country and Downhill champs as well as parts of the Herald VW MTB route. Riders who have had the privilege of riding any of these events will appreciate the quality and diversity of the ever-improving trails that Hayterdale has to offer. This new event is the brainchild of Rob Hayter, who wanted to offer a mountain bike race to cater to all levels of rider, rather than just the hardcore racing snakes. Rob and his team of master trail builders have been hard at work over the past few months cutting some exciting new trails. The most notable is the new 12km route

which is aimed at novice riders and traverses easy, flowing tracks in the flat lands. The two longer routes offer a little bit more excitement for the more experienced/ fit mountain bikers. 12km Ramble (R100 per rider) This entry level race is ideal for newcomers to the sport. With only 200m of climbing and a mix of 25% gravel road, 30% jeeptrack and 45% gentle singletrack, it’s ideal for all ages. 35km Challenge (R150 per rider) Don’t be fooled by the relatively short distance. This race is geared for the adventur-

Featuring 800m of climbing and a composition of 10% gravel road, 45% jeeptrack and 45% singletrack this is a race for those who enjoy having fun on their mountain bikes. 65km Classic (R200 per rider) The feature race of the Hayterdale Classic is geared towards serious mountain bikers, including over 1500m climbing with 35% gravel road, 30% jeeptrack and 35% singletrack. Riders will experience some of the magnificent tracks used on the PwC Great Zuurberg Trek 3 Day Stage Race. Riders wanting to make a weekend out of the race can book a camp site and bring their own tent, or book one of the luxury tents and enjoy a “glamping” experience. The luxury option includes a safari tent (pitched for you) with beds and bedding. Camping reservations must be made on the online entry form.
