New ‘jewel’ added to Addo tourism

When the property entered the market, the Bouwer family took the opportunity exploring the wildlife and farming hospitality industry through establishing the Addo Wildlife centre. At the centre, the Tangelo Restaurant puts a spin on traditional South African fare, using local produce as far as possible. It extends into the Tangelo farm stall offering an array of hand-made down-to-earth food, treats and its own range of bottled fruit juices. The restaurant and farm stall were developed by well-known executive chef Dean Dickinson. Visitors can expect to find a variety of venison dishes, home-made pies, breads and pastries, signature chocolate truffles and a wide range of deli items. According to Dickinson, a chef school will open its doors at Addo Wildlife during January 2017. As part of Bouwer’s giving back to the Valley, he instructed managers to employ only people from the Valley, to have them properly trained and to offer them the opportunity to be part of the Addo Wildlife entity.

This is according to Danie Bouwer, a citrus farmer in the Sundays River Valley, who together with his closely-knitted family opened Addo Wildlife, a brand-new addition to the Addo tourism portfolio. Addo Wildlife brings together the Sundays River Valley’s two iconic farming activities namely game and citrus. It offers a destination for the whole family with game-viewing, up-close animal interaction, aviary with raptors and parrots, touch farm, outdoor adventures, accommodation, restaurant, farm stall, wedding venue and forthcoming chef school. “There is a lot of development in the valley. Within the next five years there will be an explosion of new ventures and future job opportunities in the citrus industry,” said Bouwer. “I am a farmer not a restaurateur. So, the hospitality industry is new to me. We initially decided to have a coffee shop, but as it is with family, things tend to grow.” Animals and especially birds are his passion. Bouwer owns the neighbouring farm and since the days the late Lourens van Straaten owned Addo Croc and Lion Ranch (as it was previously known) he was involved

ie “somerseisoenskrop” is in die lug en ’n mens kry lus om ontslae te raak van items wat ongebruik in die huis of motorhuis rondstaan. As dié gier jou pak is die nasionale skoonmaak en herwinningsweek, wat van 12 to 17 September gehou word, net betyds om ontslae te raak van onnodige goed wat herwinbaar is. “Die Instituut vir Avalbeheer kry baie navrae uit die Uitenhage en Despatch gemeenskappe oor herwinning,” sê Melinda Labuscagne van The Waste Trade Company. Daar is ook ‘n behoefte na plekke waar die publiek items wat herwin kan word kan aflaai. Laerskool Albertyn is al vir ‘n paar jaar deel van The Waste Trade Company se skole-herwinningsprogram. “Die personeel en leerders is baie positief ingestel op herwinning en bewaring van ons natuurlike hulpbronne,” sê Labuscagne. Albertyn het in die verlede ’n 2de prys sowel as twee 3de plekke behaal in die kwartaalikse kompetisie wat deel vorm van die herwinningsprogram. Die Instituut vir Afvalbeheer span hierdie
jaar weer saam met Albertyn om die Nasionale Skoonmaak en Herwinningsweek te vier deur ‘n skoonmaaksessie in die buurt rondom die skool te hou. Dieselfde dag, Saterdag, 10 September (08:00-12:00), sal die publiek kans kry om elektroniese herwinbare items by die Albertyn se
skoolsaal in Van der Stellaan af te laai. Items vir herwinning sluit in: • Wit papier • Koerantpapier • Gemengde papier (advertensieblaaie en tydskrifte) • Karton • Plastiek bottels (PET, sjampoo) Die publiek word versoek om alle herwinning vooraf in hierdie kategorie te sorteer en

ast Saturday morning more than 950 excited running enthusiasts gathered at the Volkswagen PeoplePavilion for the annual 5km Fun Run and 10km Run. “Well done to the VW Athletics Club for a well organised event. My wife and I enjoyed the 10km race and the support and atmosphere was inspiring! Total of 270 suspects arrested

Through high density operations that were conducted over the past weekend to effectively address crime in the Uitenhage Cluster, a total of 270 suspects have been arrested on various charges. According to Uitenhage police spokesperson, Captain Gerda Swart, these arrests included 28 for driving under the influence of liquor, one for the illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition, rape, housebreaking and theft and assault with the intent to do grievous bodily harm. A total of 68 traffic fines were issued, valued at more than R34 000. The suspects were arrested on charges relating to theft, possession of suspected stolen goods, and 34 suspects were detained for the illegal possession of drugs.

Place of Hope has its origins approximately nine years ago and consisted of six families which stayed in Greenbushes. Complaints from residents regarding the informal settlement resulted in them being relocated to a farm in the region purchased by Fred and Susan Barnard. The Uitenhage Lions Club recently paid them a visit and provided food parcels to the approximately 25 families residing in Place of Hope. “Housing consists of old shacks and caravans with the main house accommodating approximately 90 residents in the settlement,” said Lion Denis Murphy from the Uitenhage Lions Club.

The Rockets half-marathon and 5km fun run coincides with the Muir College Spring Festival which will be held on Saturday. Participating in the half-marathon will be the 2015 Comrades winner, Gift Kelehe as well as some 200 top runners from the South African Police Service. The latter will participate in the event as it coincides with the service’s sports championships. Gift Kelehe has won the historic 90th running of the Comrades, which is the world’s oldest and most prestige ultramarathon. He did so 14 years after his brother Andrew won the 90km race in 2001.
They made history being the first brothers to have won the race. Gift will be remembered for the push-ups he did at the finishing line. The Rockets 5km fun run water point will be manned by the Uitenhage Mental Health in celebration of not only Spring but also Casual Day, which is held annually on the first Friday of September. The races start at 06:30 (21.1km) and 07:00 (5km). Gold medals will go to the top 10 male and female finishers in the 21.1km and all category winners. Silver medals will be given to the next 100 finishers and bronze to the next 300 runners. The first 300 finishers of the 5km will receive bronze medals. )Entry forms are at Brocketts Sports.

ie ATKV Sonneblomtak van Despatch het dominee Alwyn Griebenow en sy vrou, Muntie Griebenow vereer met ‘n “Klop op die skouer” toekenning vir hul onbaatsugtige diens oor baie jare aan die gemeenskap. “Hul bydrae in die gemeenskap is van onskatbare waarde en soveel leiers wat deur hulle gevorm is kan daarvan getuig,” het Anette Becker, voorsitter van die ATKV Sonneblomtak gesê. Volgens Becker het hierdie twee senior burgers van Despatch ‘n ongelooflike impak op jeug gehad, veral ten opsigte van integriteit, leierskap en om goeie landsburgers te wees. “Die Griebenow-egpaar het absoluut ouers se arms verleng om kinders te help om groter hoogtes te bereik.” Hulle het ook ’n passie vir die bewaring van Afrikaner-geskiedenis en wy hul lewens grotendeels toe aan die Voortrekker-organisasie. Dié kragpaal, waaraan ’n groot transformator geheg was, was gesaag, het kaptein Gerda Swart, ’n polisiewoordvoerder, bevestig. Die oorledene, intussen uitgeken as Zolani Mteto (36), is vermoedelik doodgeskok, het Swart gesê. Die voorval het naby die Moses Mabhidawoonbuurt plaasgevind. WoGa currently employs 63 security guards, each of whom has to undergo a polygraph test every three months. VWSA factory celebrates 65th year
The VWSA factory in Uitenhage has grown to a daily capacity of 600 cars for local and international markets.
Y
esterday, exactly 65 years ago, the first South African built Volkswagen rolled off the assembly line in Uitenhage. The Uitenhage manufacturing plant was founded in 1946 as South African Motor Assemblers and Distributors (SAMAD). At that time, the factory assembled at least 12 Studebakers a day. Today, the factory has grown to a daily capacity of 600 cars for local and international markets. In the past 65 years over 3.4 million vehicles have been built at the Uitenhage Factory. The factory has become an integral part of the Volkswagen production network. As such it has been awarded numerous export orders by the parent company. The current two top-sell-
ing passenger models, Polo and Polo Vivo are produced at the Volkswagen factory in Uitenhage. The world and more specifically South Africa have changed over the past 65 years. The political and economic landscape has changed dramatically and Volkswagen has grown from a small German company assembling the Beetle to the largest automobile company in the world. But the one thing that has remained constant is Volkswagen in the Eastern Cape. Volkswagen has become entrenched in the minds of South Africans as the people’s car, manufacturing and selling iconic vehicles with catchy, heart-warming adverts.

Methuselahs Golf: This week’s competition was
played in memory of Peet and Margaret Oosthuizen. The pairing of Louis Sherman and “The Joker” recorded 36,75 points to take the honours. The Morris Olivier sponsored prize for nearest the pins on short holes went to Derek du Preez on the 13th and Hans Botha on the 17th hole, both of them converting for two clubs. The lovely Teddy Bear was awarded to the pairing of Bobby Trefz and Wilfred Stephan whilst Calvin van Appel walked away with the whiskey draw.

The Strelitzia High School U/19 Boys soccer team participated in the Linkside Soccer Festival held last weekend and was crowned the winners of the day. The Strelitzia side achieved victories over Willow Academy (5-0), Bergsig (1-0) and drew with Nzondulelo (0-0) to progress to the final against Linkside.

Drive to promote klawerjas among youngsters Wellington Mila, chairperson of the Uitenhage Klawerjas Union, returned from a klawerjas workshop which was held in Cape Town and is eager to promote the game in the Uitenhage area. “Being at the helm of the union, he brought some new ideas and structures back with him to be applied locally,” said Lennie Horne from the Uitenhage Klawerjas Union. According to Horne the objective is to foster and promote the game locally, especially among the youngsters.
