IPTS to be operational soon ROSLYN BAATJIES
T
he Nelson Mandela Bay Metro’s Integrated Public Transport System (IPTS) will be fully operational in the near future, said the mayoral committee member for roads and transport, Rano Kayser. Kayser made the announcement at the Bay’s oldest and only steel bridge of over 135 years old, in Swartkops as part of the launch of his 100-day plan for the directorate. “If conditions permit, and statutory obligations are met, I’m committed to roll the IPTS out soon. “Rest assured that we will take our communities into our confidence, as well, to remind them that this system belongs to them,” said Kayser. He added that commuter forums will be the real drivers of Libongelethu, the public transport agency. “IPTS will go back to where it belongs: to the people. We
spent more than R2.5 billion in road infrastructure for IPTS. It is important that we as the new government will not make the same mistakes as our predecessors.” According to him, the municipality will in the Transport Month of October secure the IPTS lanes, which currently are creating serious traffic hazards. “Taxis, motorists and truck drivers currently use the lanes to circumvent the traffic. This leads to unnecessary road rage and accidents. I commit myself to secure the lanes from October 1. It will only be used when the bus service is rolled out,” Kayser added. Over the next 100 days there will be a hive of activity with the resurfacing and resealing of roads. Furthermore, faded road signs, vandalised street names and fences along roads will also receive attention. In addition, 192 workers of the expanded public works programme will be appointed to help clean stormwater drains and open ditches.
Have your accommodation graded ROSLYN BAATJIES The benefits of the grading of tourist accommodation in the Eastern Cape were outlined by Michael Mbuyah, the new provincial assessor of the Tourism Grading Council of South Africa (TGCSA). “People think that grading accommodation means giving it a star award, but it is so much more than that,” Mbuyah said. “To grade accommodation means that a standard is set. It means that you add value to your business.” Mbuyah said that the TGCSA is in service of the tourism industry and will ensure that the accommodation is graded, because it makes business sense. “By becoming a member of the grading council, your accommodation is marketed to an international audience through the council’s website. Additionally, the graded accommodations can use the
logo of the grading council on their stationery. They also receive a certificate and plate, which indicates what star the accommodation was awarded,” Mbuyah said. These accommodations are also listed on the South African Tourism website. “What owners of tourist accommodations should keep in mind, is that government and state officials may not stay overnight in ungraded accommodation. The government is a big client and, if you are graded, you stand a chance of getting business from the government.” He added that accredited assessors are linked to specific accommodations and that product owners in the hospitality industry can choose one that they are comfortable with. An additional free service to graded institutions is free legal services, Mbuyah added. “A graded accommodation business gets so many more guests. It means that more job opportunities are created and guests get value for their money,” Mbuyah explained.

Race course runs with charity at local crèche

What started out as a once off Christmas in July party for the kids of Mickey Mouse Crèche, has developed into an astonishing relationship where the Fairview Race Course has “adopted” the crèche.

A Party of Hope, where cupcakes will be “exchanged” for a donation towards the Cupcakes of Hope cancer foundation will be hosted in Uitenhage at the Levyvale SuperSpar on Saturday, September 24th. “Whilst reading Facebook, the thought crossed my mind that Uitenhage should also be part of the cupcake drive in support of chil-
dren with cancer. I’ve shared my idea with friends and family and they all were very en, said Deisre Cloete, the organiser thusiastic,” of the Cupcakes of Hope event. “Within a short time we have received donations of ingredients and toppers and a number of Cupcake Angels started baking. At this stage we have more than 800 cupcakes.” The Party of Hope will commence at 09:00 on Saturday, September 24th. MSC to bridge gap between theory and workplace MSC Business College held its 13th annual graduation ceremony at the Uitenhage Town Hall. “The graduation is always a highlight in a student’s life. It is recognition of their hard work, commitment and determination to succeed,” said MSC Business College principal, Manfred Burkert. The MSC Uitenhage campus opened in 2003, offering qualifications in Management, Administration, Information Technology and International Travel. “Many graduates are currently working in successful positions and attribute much of their success to the personal hands-on care that MSC Business College offers its students. The college keeps classes to a minimum size to allow for maximum attention to student needs,” said Burkert. The Uitenhage campus is part of a national group of 20 campuses, making the group one of the most established names in further education in South Africa. “We firmly believe that education providers have an obligation to bridge the gap between educational theory and the workplace.
As a result students are equipped with the necessary skills, knowledge and personal development in order to launch their careers,” said Burkert.
In December 2013 MSC was voted the number one private FET college in South Africa by the South African Board for People Practices (SABPP).
The college allows for registrations throughout the year owing to an innovative timetabling system. New courses are due to start.

Adenkule is an archaeologist with a passion for soccer. He believes that exercise not only is good for your body, but that the endorphins produced whilst doing sport are even

SA’s first free sheet newspaper Africa. The first weekly editions on average were 4-6 pages with a loading of approximately 40% advertisements and the rest was covered with local news.
The success story of the UD News started more than 45 years ago when Uitenhage was without a local newspaper and had to rely on out-of-town papers for snippets of news and advertising.
Recipe: nonsensational and nonpolitical
The policy regarding news content was that it should be non-sensational and non-political. This has proved itself to be a winning recipe. During 1975 the UD was sold and the new owners opted to change the news policy. Readers and advertisers soon rejected it and disaster was inevitable. Strevett could not bear seeing a winning recipe being destroyed and saved it by buying it back in 1976. He gave the UD a new lease on life by bringing back the winning format of good and uplifting news. Raised from the ashes, the UD again became as popular as ever and soon boasted 8 200 copies a week.

=This is a copy of the first ever edition of the Uitenhage Despatch News, distributed in 1971.
Halgreen soon received offers from the two largest publishing companies in the country to purchase the UD. By 1984, Halgreen agreed to the offer and sold it to Nasionale Pers (Media24) who had the UD News/Nuus registered as one of its many products. By 1997 the UD distribution figure was boosted to 27 000 a week and it expanded its distribution area to KwaNobuhle. Currently the UD News distributes 30 000 copies each Thursday in the Addo, Despatch, Kirkwood, Uitenhage and surrounding areas and still is a priceless paper of choice.

Canadian Gordon Strevett, immigrated to South Africa and decided to make a living in Uitenhage. Here he put to practice a concept he had brought with him from his country of origin, a free-sheet newspaper also referred to as a knock-and-drop (derived from knock on the door and drop it in front of the door). The concept was to sell advertising space to local businesses, which in turn would make it possible to print and distribute the newspaper free of charge to households in town. Strevett during 1971 had the newspaper registered as Uitenhage Despatch (Pty) Limited. According to records available it was the first-ever free-sheet newspaper to be registered in South Africa. Thus the UD also is the oldest knock-and-drop newspaper in South
adjoining suburbs like Thomas Gamble and Rosedale. For this to be successful he had the distribution figures to be increased to 15 500 copies a week. In his short period of being the owner of the UD News/Nuus, Halgreen with his business wisdom contributed to it being one of the most successful knock-and-drop newspapers in the country. During his reign, a letter from Israel arrived at the office. Nine months after the day it was posted. The only inscription on the envelope read: UD, South Africa.

UD mast heads Gordon Strevett registered the newspaper in 1971 as Uitenhage Despatch (Pty) Limited and this is where the mast head story started. By 1975 the newspaper was sold and the new owners changed the mast head, using UD prominently. Strevett bought it back in 1976 and changed the mast head in 1977 to UD News. It changed ownership in 1981 when Brian Halgreen purchased it and by 1984 the UD News was sold to Nasionale Pers. During 1985 the first mast head printed in colour appeared. Seven years later the mast head was made more compact and during 1996 it once again received a facelift. This time the mast head was printed in italic style. Another nine years passed and the mast head was changed during 2005, this time to suit the look of the OP Koerante mast head format.

Retinal conditions such as Macular Degeneration and Dystrophies, Retinitis Pigmentosa, Stargardt Disease and other rare conditions cause loss of vision in over 40 million people worldwide and a probable 150 000 South Africans. International clinical trials to find effective treatments are showing great promise and Retina South Africa has now ensured that South African patients can join the international data base that will connect patients to the correct researchers. The portal www.myretinatracker.org is anonymous, free and leaves the control in the hands of the patient. The site is monitored by the Foundation Fighting Blindness [USA] and researchers are vetted by them before the patient is invited to contact the research institute. “Most of these genetic retinal conditions are extremely rare -affecting from 1 in 3000 to 1 in 30 000 in the population” said Claudette Medefindt, head of Science for Retina South Africa. “To find enough patients to treat will require international collaboration and My Retina Tracker is ideal- the patient holds the power.” Patients who have had a gene test to determine their precise gene mutation will have
the best chance of being included in these promising clinical trials. More than 270 genes have already been linked to these sight stealing conditions and Retina South Africa has partnered with the Division of Human Genetics at the University of Cape Town, headed by Professor Raj Ramesar to find gene mutations unique to South African populations. This world class team of gene hunters has already made significant genetic discoveries and their work is unique on the African continent. Retina South Africa is a patient-run NPO with branches in Gauteng, Eastern Cape and Western Cape. Their main objective is to raise funds for research to find treatments for retinal blindness and to ensure that all South Africans have access to these miracles. “We estimate that over 17000 young South Africans will lose their sight if they do not receive treatment- that is over 1 million blind years that we could save” Medefindt said. She has appealed to all South Africans to support their vision quest at www.retinasa.org.za While the search for a cure is accelerating, many parents live with the frustration of watching their children losing their vision, powerless to stop the relentless and daily degeneration.

alkability – or the ability to get around without a car – is the current “big thing” in residential real estate. This can substantially increase property values in areas that offer residents shops, restaurants, schools, parks and public transport within comfortable walking distance of their

Good turnout expected at Milk Run HEILIE COMBRINCK With R7 000 cash to put in the banking account of the winner of the Clover Milk Run 10km open, organisers are expecting a good turnout at the race at Kings Beach on Saturday, September 24th. Organised by the Port Elizabeth Amateur Athletic Club (established in 1880) the oldest athletic club in South Africa, this will be the 17th Clover Milk Run. The Club is the first in the athletic circles which offered prize money
to the category for runners aged 70+ as well as the first club to hand-out medals to winners of different categories of a 5km fun run. Another draw card for the forthcoming Clover Run is the five lucky draws of vouchers valued R2 000 each plus 60 litres of milk. The races start at 07:00 (10km) and 07:05 (5km) at Kings Beach.
