Festival to boost local film sector HEILIE COMBRINCK

piring filmmakers is necessary. This is where the Film Festival has to play its part presenting networking opportunities for emerging and established filmmakers in an environment facilitating development, practical hands-on training and workshops. Apart from the festival, Mqolomba said the Eastern Cape Film Forum plays a major role, as they once a month visit towns in the countryside. This is to host workshops, inviting locals to screen their work and up their skills. The festival offers local filmmakers an opportunity to network, understand the filming industry and apply to be part of the industry. Therefore stakeholders which will be present include the National Film and Video Foundation, Department of Trade & Industry, SABC as well as the Media Institute of South Africa. “We are looking for local content. So please, if you want your film to be screened at the festival, send it to us as soon as possible. It first needs to be viewed prior to being accepted or not for the festival. “Filmmakers, professional and aspirant, as well as industry experts will be part of the festival and participate in conversation, talking to the entrenchment of film in the Eastern Cape as an economic sector, capacitation, screenings and networking,” said Mqolomba. The theme for the 2016 Eastern Cape Film Festival is “Women in film, a different take on telling our stories” in honouring the 60th anniversary of the women’s march against pass laws. )Filmmakers wishing to be part of the festival are requested to send an email to info@ecfilmfestival.co.za and those who want to submit content/films for screening must send email to submissions@ecfilmfestival.co.za For any other or media information e-mail nceba@ecfilmfestival.co.za

The festival will be held from 18 to 20 November at the Eastern Cape Audio Visual Centre in East London. The aim is to promote film as an all-encompassing sector. It is hosted by the Eastern Cape Information Technology Initiative (ECITI) and Radio Ya Buntu. “My passion is television, film and music. So one day, whilst in Jo’burg I thought, you know, I want to do what I love most back home, in the province which I love the most. “The film industry in South Africa currently creates over 25 000 jobs and generates more than R5 billion to the country’s gross domestic product. We, here in the Eastern Cape, need to tap into that. “But for this to be achieved, skills transfer from experienced professionals, guiding as-
