NMU is sedert 20 September opgeskort weens ’n groep betogende studente van die #FeesMustFall-beweging. Kobus Gerber, voorsitter van die nuutgestigte vereniging vir besorgde ouers, Captu, het gesê hulle ’n aansoek om ’n dringende interdik by die hooggeregshof in Grahamstad ingedien. Daarin eis ouers dat die hof die NMU moet dwing om sy dissiplinêre kode vir studente toe te pas en ’n hooggeregshofbevel bekom teen onwettige optrede deur studente, asook enige personeel. Luidens die aansoek het die NMU ’n “kontraktuele verpligting” om tersiêre onderrig te verskaf aan opbetaalde, ingeskrewe stu-
dente. “Daarom het die universiteit ’n plig om ’n veilige omgewing te voorsien waarin onderrig kan plaasvind.” Nicholas Nyati, die NMU se studenteraadsvoorsitter het gesê, “Ek kan sien hoe die internasionale studente om my sukkel en ek weet hoe die finalejaarstudente staatmaak op hul eindeksamen. “As studenteraad is ons baie teleurgesteld om te hoor dat klasse nie soos aanvanklik beplan, hervat nie. Ons hoop die bestuur sal die universiteit binnekort kan oopmaak,” sê Nyati. ’n Woordvoerder van die betogende studente was nie vir kommentaar beskikbaar nie.
Free wifi access for students Nelson Mandela University students are reminded that they can access the university’s online learning portal for free from any of the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality’s 17 public facilities equipped with wifi access. The e-connect wifi project enables students to do research for assignments or even online tests from certain municipal libraries and customer care centres. “As part of the municipality’s memorandum of understanding with the university, any student who needs to access the NMU
online learning portal is able to do so via the metro’s wifi infrastructure,” said councillor Dean Biddulph, Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC). “All NMU students who do not have access to internet at home would be able to login into the university’s learning sites to do their research and online tests at no cost at metro libraries and customer care centres.” )Free wifi access will be available locally at the Uitenhage Customer Care Centre and the Uitenhage Library.

PHOTO:QUICKPIC Since the first robot was introduced more than 50 years ago, industrialised robots have been at the forefront of automotive manufacturing. A total of 320 new robots have been installed at Volkswagen Group South Africa’s (VWSA) Body Shop as part of the new major investments in the Uitenhage factory. The estimated R4.5 billion investment announced last year has been allocated to the upgrade and refurbishment of production facilities and quality (R3 billion), development of local supplier capacity (R1.5 billion) as well as development and training of employees (R29 million). The 320 new Kuka robots installed at the Body Shop form an integral part of the Modular Transverse Matrix (MQB) platform which will be used in the Uitenhage factory.
“The Kuka robots will perform monotonous, high-precision work which will allow Body Shop employees to focus on tasks which require the human involvement,” said Thomas Schaefer, Chairman and Managing Director of Volkswagen Group South Africa “The introduction of robots will improve the ergonomics in the Body Shop as it reduces strain on our people. The introduction of the specialised robots into the Body Shop paves the way for higher volumes and even better quality,” added Schaefer. The new robots are energy efficient, faster and have capabilities which improve safety. The technology currently being installed at the Uitenhage factory will enable Volkswagen to produce more than one model on one single assembly line.

Vir die eerste keer in die kompetisie se geskiedenis het die beoordelaars twee wenners aangekondig. Rebecca Mqumelo van Clarendon Girls High in Oos-Londen is as die mede-wenner aangewys. André en Rebecca het albei ’n beurs ter waarde van R100 000 van NMU sowel as geborgde pryse ter waarde van R44 900 huis toe geneem. André het vir sy uitmuntende akademiese prestasies ook die akademie-kategorie gewen. Hy is sedert graad 4 die toppresteerder in sy jaargroep en het in die Junie-eksamen die hoogste gemiddeld van alle grade in Brandwag gehad. Hy het ook talle prestasies in olimpiades agter sy naam. André het in skaak SuidAfrika internasionaal verteenwoordig en was die kaptein van die o.16-span wat in Hongarye aan die Wêreld Olimpiade deelgeneem het. André het SA-kleure in binnehuise krieket en OP-kleure in karate, tennis en krieket. Hy is die afgelope twee jaar na afloop van die Punt Krieketfees waaraan meer as
dertig skole deelneem vir die toerspanne gekies. Verlede jaar was hul na Sri Lanka en vanjaar na Indië, waar hy ook die kaptein van die span was. In Sri Lanka het hy ’n man van die wedstryd-toekenning ontvang en onder sy leiding het die span in Indië 4 uit 5 wedstryde gewen. By Brandwag het hy die skool se eerste spanne in skaak, krieket, gholf en tennis verteenwoordig. André is ook ’n krieketskeidsregter en het gehelp met insamelings vir toerusting by straatkrieket in Rosedale waar hy ook wiskundeklasse vir kinders aangebied het. Hy het ook verjaardagpartytjies vir kinders by Oosterland Jeugsentrum gereël en daar krieket en sokker afgerig. Die matriek van die jaar kompetisie word jaarliks deur The Herald en die Nelson Mandela Universiteit aangebied. Volgende jaar beplan André om astrofisika en astronomie aan die Universiteit van Kaapstad te studeer. Die inspirasie hiervoor was tydens ’n besoek aan die Astronomiese Observatorium naby Sutherland.

Skeidsregter van Despatch blaas in Kiwiland HEILIE COMBRINCK
O

Maar Theresa Prince van Despatch is een van ’n handjievol Suid-Afrikaanse skeidsregters wat internasionale gradering het. Sy is oor die jare uitgenooi om by ál die groot internasionale netbaltoernooie diens te doen. Prince het onlangs by die Diamant-uitdaagreeks in Durban geblaas waar Suid-Afrika meegeding het met Uganda en Zimbabwe. Drostdy awaits orders for holiday cookies The festive season is getting closer by the day and in preparation for households to have enough holiday treats, Drostdy Protective Workshop is ready to start baking its cookie variety. On an annual basis the workshop bakes a few tons of cookies and this project serves as the workshop’s largest fund-raiser. According to Yvonne Barkhuizen, manag-

Four hijackers arrested during weekend The police’s weekend operations resulted in 268 suspects being arrested on various charges. These arrests included four (4) for car hijacking, attempted murder, house robbery, seven (7) for driving under the influence of liquor and 33 for the illegal possession of drugs. Three liquor premises were visited and they received fines for non-compliance
with the Liquor Act. A total of 71 traffic fines were issued, valued at more than R35 500. The suspects were arrested on charges relating to housebreaking and theft, assault (common), assault with the intent to do grievous bodily harm, theft and possession of suspected stolen goods.

Bikers’ 25th Toy Run The 25th Port Elizabeth Toy Run®, an annual charity event supported by the biking community, will be held on Sunday, 27th November. The main event of the PE Toy Run® weekend is the bikers’ mass ride and after party which starts at Hunters Retreat Hotel, Kabega Park, with a mass ride departing at 10:00 en route through the city to the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium where an after party takes place. The entrance costs R50 per person and includes a 25th year commemorative badge. Donations of toys can be dropped off at Klinicare Pharmacies in the metro.

anaand is dit ’n braai en môre gaan die paaltjies waai by die jaarlikse Williams Hunt/ Hoërskool Despatch Pro-20 kriekettoernooi. ’n Totaal van 10 skole se 1ste krieketspanne gaan oor die volgende twee dae die dorp se krieketvelde oorneem. Wedstryde word gespeel op die hoërskool se hoofveld, Despatch dorpsvelde, velde van die laerskole Sonop, Frans Conradie asook op Uitenhage by HTS Daniel Pienaar.
Die deelnemende skole sluit in Hoërskool Despatch, Port Rex, Marlow, Grens, Gill, Lilyfontein, Milnerton, THS Daniel Pienaar, Nico Malan en Framesby. “Namens Hoërskool Despatch sowel as al die deelnemende skole wil ons graag krieketondersteuners sowel as inwoners van Despatch en Uitenhage nooi om die wedstryde te ondersteun,” sê Theo Smit, organiseerder van die Williams Hunt/Hoërskool Despatch Pro-20 kriekettoernooi.
Program hoogtepunte Donderdag: Wedstryde begin vandag 11:00 en die laaste kragmetings van die dag begin 14:30. Daarna word ’n steakbraai by die Despatch Krieket Klubhuis gehou (R75/persoon) bestellings moet vooraf geplaas word by Theo 082 749 4697. Vrydag: Wedstryde begin 08:00. Na die dag se 12 wedstryde pak die afrigters van die deelnemende skole mekaar vir vermaak in
‘n Pro-20 wedstryd. Saterdag: Wedstryde begin 08:00 met semifinale om 11:30 en die finale wedstryd om 15:00 op die dorpsveld. “Hierdie toernooi word op ’n jaarlikse basis deur Williams Hunt geborg. Die spelers en afrigters van Hoërskool Despatch se eerste krieketspan bedank hulle graag vir hul toegewyde ondersteuning met die toernooi. “Dankie ook aan al die ander borge vir hulle bydraes.
