Family fun day at College Hill

Ready for the College Hill Family Fun Day are principal Brigitta Marais together with (back from left) Callan Elie, Keira­Lee Armoed, Kee­Lynn Armoed and Daniel Duthie. All ready for action.

College Hill will be hosting a family fun day on Saturday 29th of October.

The aim of the family day is to raise enough funds to build a jungle gym for the grades 1-3 playground.

“This comes after realising how much some of the learners need to develop their gross motor skills,” said Brigitta Marais, College Hill Preparatory principal The action will start at 06:30 with entries for the College Hill/KFC 3km or 5km fun run/ walk which starts at 07:30.

The first 300 to finish will receive a KFC medal together with a KFC goodies bag. CocaCola will reward all participants with an Energade at the end of the race. The day will be filled with various games, food stalls, muscle cars, spot prizes and a raffle draw at 11:00 for a gas braai. Luister!FM will be broadcasting live from the school grounds.

EC’s first Africa Code held in U’hage T

he first ever Africa Code Week in the Eastern Cape is taking place this week at the Uitenhage-based Nelson Mandela Bay (NMB) Science and Technology Centre.

Some 140 Grade 8-10 learners from 5 underresourced schools from Uitenhage and Despatch were granted the opportunity to combine mathematics with a vibrant digital environment.

“We are excited to be the first host of Africa Code Week in the Eastern Cape,” said Chris McCartney, Head of Curriculum and Facilities at the science centre.

“Through this programme, not only will learners’ problem-solving and analytical reasoning be enhanced, but their interest to harness coding as a skill could shape their fu-

ture professional development.”

Physical science teacher, Nelisa Mbebe, who accompanied her learners from Molly Blackburn High School said, “I am surprised at how quickly and effortlessly our learners are grasping the whole concept of code.

“Considering I first learnt to use a computer at 19, I can now see that tackling digital literacy from the early age of 12 gives a chance to children from our township schools to be part of the innovators of tomorrow.”

Initiated last year by enterprise software company SAP, the Galway Education Centre and Cape Town Science Centre Africa Code Week aims to bridge the technological divide in underdeveloped African communities by driving digital literacy through the teaching of code.

Code, a set of instructions computer system require to function, is a feature in the development of applications and websites.

The NMB Science and Technology Centre is an initiative of the Uitenhage Despatch Development Initiative (UDDI).

It offers learner and educator support programmes focused on science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

The facility boasts computer and science labs, and exhibitions in transport, energy, momentum, game zone, life sciences, construction, communication, light and optics.

Last year, Africa Code Week trained 89 000 learners across 17 African countries, and 150 000 youth across 30 African countries are targeted for 2016.

“We are assisting to achieve this goal by teaching learners how to write their first lines of code and encouraging them to get their peers to get involved.

“We also plan to facilitate more code-related training workshops particularly for educators in the metro,” ends McCartney.

“In spite of this, the leadership of the opposition has embarked on a very myopic exercise of encouraging chaos among their supporters at IDP meetings.”

According to Trollip, the opposition’s illconceived strategy is backfiring with their own supporters now threatening to burn ward offices as a result of having been prevented from exercising their democratic right to participate in the formulation of the budget and IDP. “This foolhardy strategy is short-sighted as all it achieves is to deprive needy and vulnerable residents of being able to interact with the new administration to highlight their needs, hopes and aspirations,” said Trollip.

“I have on numerous occasions warned the local leadership of the opposition against encouraging this dangerous and undemo-

cratic strategy.”

As a result, Councillor Sabani faces a charge for violating the code of conduct after he tried to hijack an IDP meeting at the Nangoza Jebe Hall.

“We are on a mission to deliver better services and grow the economy for our 1.2 million residents. Having the official opposition in such disarray cannot be in the interest of anyone in the Nelson Mandela Metro.

“We have thus asked the opposition leadership to conduct a full investigation into this ongoing disruption and that a report be sent to the Chief Whip, Cllr Werner Senekal, by Friday 21 October 2016.

The DA-led council is determined to continue engaging the citizens of this metro in order to craft the best possible Metro IDP and budget, that is informed by a comprehensive and inclusive public participation process.

“We will deliver better services, grow the economy to create jobs and stop corruption, whether the opposition wishes to be part of this change or not,” said Trollip.

Lions to host senior citizens’ supper Senior citizens are invited by the Uitenhage Lions Club to attend the social club’s 29th annual Senior Citizen’s Christmas Supper treat.

The service is provided to the elderly free of charge as a form of appreciation for their contribution to the advancement of the communities of Uitenhage and Despatch during their economically active years.

The supper includes a three course meal with light entertainment for ages 65 and older and we can only ac-

cept 180 elders for the event this year.

All bookings will be dealt on a first come first serve basis.

U’hage kameraman wen met ‘nat vlieg’ foto Die algehele senior wenner van Die Burger Buite se jaarlikse foto-kompetisie, Dewald van Rensburg, is ‘n lid van die Uitenhage Kameraklub.

Hy het hierdie prestasie behaal deur met ‘n ongewone tegniek die fokus op ‘n gewone huisvlieg se gesig te plaas. Dewald sê die vlieg het lui-lui op ‘n vensterbank gesit en hy het dit met ‘n water- bottel natgespuit.

“Na ‘n paar tree het hy lank genoeg stilgesit vir ‘n foto. Tegnies was die grootste uitdaging om die fokus op die oë reg te kry.

“Ek het ‘n reverse ring adaptor gebruik om die kamera lens agterstevoor te monteer.

“Gevolglik is die velddiepte baie vlak en die lig wat die lens inlaat baie min. Ek moes die vlieg van bo af ook belig om genoeg lig op sy gesig te kry,” verduidelik Dewald.

Volgens Albertyn Potgieter van die Uitenhage Kameraklub, is

Muir’s Sontonga award for cultural leadership E

noch Sontonga, the composer of ‘Nkosi Sikelel’ iAfrika’, was honoured at the Muir College prize-giving by means of a brand new trophy for leadership.

Muir College Boys’ High School headmaster, Robin Stephenson, said that the school considered it appropriate to add to their prize list the Enoch Sontonga Trophy.

It will be awarded annually to a scholar for outstanding Cultural Leadership.

The honourable Sontonga was born in Uitenhage and his musical piece has become a symbol of national unity.

His great grandson, Winston Rapotapi (presently the DA shadow Minister of Arts and Culture) said, “The family feels greatly honoured that the school had honoured our great grandfather in this way.”

The first recipient of the Enoch Sontonga award for Cultural Leadership was Aphiwe Zinto.

U’hage learners in ‘court drama’ Learners from the V.N. Kwinana School in Uitenhage participated in the National Schools Moot Court Competition in Gauteng. In this competition the country’s best up-and-coming legal professionals came together for some real court room drama, showing their skills in arguing intricate legal arguments that all relate to the South African Constitution. This year the theme for the finals was particularly relevant with the case in question relating to protest action in high schools. The right to protest (Section 17 of the Constitution) as well as limitations of the right to protest was being argued and debated.

lthough studying and writing exams are learner’s responsibilities, exam stress affect the entire family to some extent.

There’s a lot you can do as a parent to assist in getting your child ready for the task, reducing the stress levels and preventing overload or burnout in the process. Much of this accolade is attributed to his work in the HIV field and in the managed care environment. The UDIPA Wellness Life Centre (Previously known as the UDIPA Life Centre), where Dr Naidoo is situated, is recognized as a Centre of Excellence in HIV. “Approximately 20 years ago, we as GPs were faced with a daunting task. It was a time when a most diabolical virus was being encountered, it was a time when we first started to see the most terrifying and vicious syndromes, a time when treatment options were

few and almost out of our grasp,” said Dr Logan Naidoo.

“To add to this burden the authorities were in denial and could not see this health tsunami approaching. We had to take some decisive action.”

Dr Naidoo gathered together a team of dedicated medical practitioners and started a centre dedicated to HIV research. By divine intervention they were able to acquire ARVs through an

The team comprising Drs. Kammies, Moolman, Hugo, Bhyat and specialist pathologist Dr Kasongo set about the task of dipping into the HIV murky waters.

Soon they added a social worker, a psychologist and devoted nurses to form a multi-disciplinary team.

“With no state provision of ARVs, we somehow managed to treat anyone (even non-medical aid patients).

if one or both earners in the household want to change from a high-paying job to a smaller income from working the land. “A good tactic is for one adult to keep their job, as this stable income should be enough to get a bond,” says Vermaak.

“Living off the land is very hard work and requires determination and patience. But it’s an immensely satisfying lifestyle and worth the hard graft,” she says.

ANOTHER DOLLEY EARNS A BLACK BELT <Sumayah Dolley, a Grade 6 learner from Nasruddin Islamic School, recently graded for her Shodan Black Belt (1st Dan). She has been practising the art of karate for the past 5 years, from age of 6, under the guidance of Sensei Riaan Le Roux (6th Dan) at the Uitenhage Karate Academy. Over the years she has been awarded various medals, karateka of the year in her division, and has also managed to obtain her national colours in both JKA and WJKA karate styles.

In addition, Sumayah and her siblings, Jameelah Dolley (4th Dan) , Zain Dolley (2nd Dan) and Zaahid Dolley (Blue belt) ; have been selected to represent South Africa at the 6th World WJKA Championships, in Vlissingen Netherlands in June 2017.

Sumayah and the rest of the Dolley fighting clan will continue to represent their name and their country and appreciates the continued support the community has shown them. They will continue to kick their way to the top.

Car as winning prize in tough rally

C

ompetition will be tough among the 20 rally cars expected to participate in the Algoa Rally Club 50k rally challenge, which offers a Volkswagen Polo as the winning prize.

The challenge will be held at the Fountains Mall in Jeffreys Bay on October 29th.

Local farmers have supported the rally by allowing the event to take part on farm lands in the Jeffreys Bay and Kouga area.

Action starts at Fountains Mall shopping centre, with early documentation at Global Junction coffee shop. The first car will enter the parking area at 10:00 and then move to Jubilee and Boplaas farms.

Zuurbron and Melon Spekboom will also be visited with special stages. The rally will finish at the Fountains Mall at around 16:30.

The prize giving will be at E-Street restaurant, with a final stage that will include a route behind the mall.

Gabriel Jewellers will once again sponsor Tissot Watches for the winning driver and navigator.
