A family member of one of the elderly persons who has fallen prey to one of these fraudulent calls said, “He requested the last four numbers of my grandmother’s SASSA card. Then he asked for her identification number as well as PIN,” said the family member who wished not to be named.

ASSA does not ask for personal details, account details and pins over the phone. Nor does the agency update its database telephonically. SASSA does not do business outside its offices.” This firm message is from Thamsanqa Singeni, Eastern Cape spokesperson of the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA), regarding fraudulent telephone calls received by beneficiaries. The UD News received information regarding a man claiming he is from SASSA, phoning beneficiaries in Uitenhage requesting
Do not fall prey According to Singeni, SASSA beneficiaries must beware not to fall prey to these scams and other ambush tactics via the use of a telephone. “SASSA cards are for drawing grant money
only. Beneficiaries should not respond to calls or a SMS where companies are offering products such as airtime and other financial products or loans against SASSA payment cards. “Authorised deductions - which SASSA allows in terms of legislation - to be made against SASSA cards include a funeral policy deduction that does not exceed 10% of the grant value (not a child’s grant). “Please report any SASSA official who is involved in the sale or promotion of any products that require payment through a SASSA payment card.” )Sengeni requested beneficiaries to report incidents like the above to law enforcement
agencies or by calling SASSA toll-free number (0800 60 10 11) or by visiting the nearest local office and reporting such occurrences.

Volunteer campaign to support NMMU students A
volunteer campaign to support Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) students in completing their academic year – Support4NMMU – was launched on Tuesday. In a press release issued it was stated that a massive effort from the extended NMMU community would be needed to help almost 27 000 students complete their studies to graduate or progress to the following year, if the present disruptions on some of the university’s six campuses continue. After a four-week shutdown, followed by a week of serious interruptions as the University endeavoured to get its academic programme back on track as a result of the ongoing national FeesMustFall protests, time is seriously against NMMU in completing the 2016 academic year before the year is out. However, with the support of staff, parents, business, industry, civic society and concerned individuals, the University believes it can still meet its commitments. Galvanising the goodwill NMMU is hoping it can galvanise the goodwill of the metro and those living in George, where NMMU also has a campus, to make this happen. And so the University launched its #Support4NMMU campaign online on the http:// fmf.nmmu.ac.za website today to establish

to December, NMMU has also established an online form for those students living in nonaccredited or private accommodation whose lease expires at the end of November. Close to 600 students have already completed this form. The University is hopeful that many of these students will be accommodated by the families of their classmates, or that landlords will extend their leases for a week for free or at a minimal cost. Even so, it is likely that hundreds of students at NMMU will be in need of home-stay accommodation for a few days in December. What is needed? Jazz sax - early Christmas concert HEILIE COMBRINCK
J
azz saxophonist Curtis Kettledas, who has shared the stage with international artists like George Benson, Hugh Masekela, Feya Faku and Gloria Bosman, will feature at a Christmas in November concert which will be held in Uitenhage. Kettledas, a music lecturer at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, said the songs would mostly be from his Christmas album that he is currently recording. His debut album, Hymns Volume 1, showcases his take on a collection of traditional hymns. During the Christmas in November concert, Kettledas will be featuring artists accompanied by band members Wesley Keet on keyboard, drummer Bevin Mashaka and Grant Allison on bass guitar Earlier in his career he travelled to Taiwan where he has spent six months as a member of an international band called Mirage Live Jazz Band, with members originated from Spain, France and Italy. Too many neglect their responsibilities towards their families. It is traditionally celebrated over five days, with the main day of celebration the third day which falls on the darkest moonless night of the month, Kartik (October/ November). This year, Diwali will be celebrated on the 30th of October. In North India, the festival also marks the beginning of a new year. Deepavali, a Hindi word, means a “row of lamps”. The lamp or diya is largely symbolic of the festival. Lamps are lit throughout the five days of celebration, and are seen to bring light, joy and prosperity into Hindu homes during this auspicious time. The light has always been a symbol of whatever is positive in the world. To Hindus, darkness represents ignorance, and light is a metaphor for knowledge.
The lighting of a lamp symbolizes the destruction, through knowledge, of all negative forces- wickedness, violence, lust, anger, envy, greed, bigotry, fear, injustice, oppression and suffering. The festival carries great and varying religious and cultural significance among the several sects of Hinduism, with the universal message being that of good triumphing over evil The festival is widely identified by new beginnings, lights, bursting of fireworks, sweetmeats, feasts as well as time with family and friends. Each of the holy days of the festival is reserved for specific traditions and rituals, but what remains constant throughout is the celebration of spirituality, life, family, friends and merriment. All Hindus are wished a peaceful and blissful Diwali. May light continue to conquer over darkness in your life.

Despatch klas van ‘66 weer ‘op skool’
=Hoërskool Despatch se leerlingraad van 1966 het onlangs weer ’n draai by die skool gemaak. Nege-en-twintig matrieks uit die 1966 Hoërskool Despatch matriekklas van een-envyftig leerlinge, het onlangs na vyf dekades, weer ’n draai in klaskamers gaan maak. “Na 50 jaar het die meeste van die ‘maats’ mekaar vir die eerste keer weer gesien,” sê Johann Engelbrecht, een van dié 1966 matrieks. “Gesigte is wedersyds versigtig bestudeer om na soveel jaar `n ongemaklike ‘aangename kennis’ te vermy.” Die klas van 1966 se reünie is deur die eertydse hoofdogter, Wilma Vosloo (nou Jordaan) gereël. Die groep het mekaar vir koffie in die voorportaal van die saal ontmoet. “Daarna het ons met al ons staaltjies en herinneringe van klaskamer tot klaska-
mer gestap.” Engelbrecht sê die aand se puik driegangete, voorberei deur Aneen de Jongh en Petra van Eeden, was ’n aangename geselligheid waar vertellinge die lagkliere oortyd laat werk het. Dié saamkuier is later afgesluit met die sing van die skoollied. “Ondeundes het bevestig waarom hulle destyds geen onbekendes aan die kantoor was nie en vergete gebly het tydens nominasies vir die leerlingraad,” sê Engelbrecht. Sondagoggend het die groep die gesamentlike erediens bygewoon, wat `n optrede deur die Despatch Mannekoor ingesluit het. Meeste van die matrieks van 1966 is teen 1948 in die einste kerk gedoop. En dit is iets wat ons tot elke prys wil vermy.” Ten spyte van vele operasies sedert die aanval, het haar gapende wond nie voldoende genees nie, sê Lottering. “In die laaste operasie in Mei vanjaar is rekbare tou oor die wande van Hope se oop sinusholtes gespan sodat die weefsel nader aan mekaar getrek kon word, maar die opening het nie na wense verklein nie. “Dié dat ons besluit het om nou wel die operasie te doen,” verduidelik Lottering. Dit is egter ’n lang proses. Eers sal daar X-strale geneem moet word – ’n ietwat moeilike taak as dit by wilde diere kom. Volgende moet 3D-afdrukke gemaak word om die vorm van die titaanplaat te be-
Uit die vier renosters wat in ’n tydperk van twee weke op dié reservaat net buite Jeffreysbaai in die Oos-Kaap geteiken is, het net Hope oorleef. ’n Beskermende plaat is kort ná die aanval oor haar oop sinusholtes aangebring, maar sy het die plaat teen al wat ’n ding is gekap en geskuur en dit moes toe verwyder word. So ook met die tweede plaat wat later aangebring is. Die jongste baanbreker-operasie sal vroeg volgende jaar behartig word deur die dokters Johan Marais van Saving the Survivors, wildveearts Jana Pretorius en die mediese spesialis dr. Nick Duneas, wat hoofsaaklik op menslike amputasies fokus. Volgens Lottering was die operasie aanvanklik nie ’n ideale opsie nie, maar nou het hulle geen ander keuse nie. “Hope se kakebeen is geweldig dun aan die

effreysbaai se Lombardini-renoster, wat ’n wrede stropingsaanslag in Mei verlede jaar oorleef het en intussen Hope gedoop is, sal eersdaags ’n baanbreker-operasie ondergaan. In dié operasie, ’n eerste in sy soort op ’n renoster, gaan Hope onder meer ’n titaanplaat, waarop varkkraakbeen oorgeplant word, oor haar oop sinusholtes kry. Stropers het dié dier se horing tot onder die horingbed (groeiplaat) gekap, dus sal haar horings nooit weer teruggroei nie. Sy is Hope gedoop omdat sy as ’t ware hoop aan Johan Lottering, eienaar van die Lombardini-reservaat, gegee het dat sy wíl lewe toe sy vier dae ná die aanslag met die gapende neuswonde gevind is.

Goue stem van ‘Piper’ herdenk Die goue stem van Martin “Piper” Goliath word as ’n herdenkingsimbool gebruik vir lede van die Christadelphians sanggroep wat oor die jare heengegaan het. Eerskomende Sondagaand herdenk die Christadelphians gospelsanggroep nie net vir Piper, wat ’n ongelooflike sangloopbaan geniet het nie, maar sing ook ten bate van die borskanker-bewustheidsveldtog. “Piper was ‘n toonbeeld van nederigheid, toewyding en vredeliewendheid,” sê Danny Jacobs van die Christadelphians. “Hy het ’n besonderse diep basstem gehad wat dikwels vergelyk was met Washington Sixolo, sanger van die legendariese Kings Messengers.” Christadelphian lede wat oor die afgelope 40 jaar sedert die sanggroep se bestaan heengegaan het sluit in Andrew
Petrus, Joey Malgas, Richard Ressouw, Teddy Claassen, Piper Goliath en Harold Malgas. “Andrew en Harold was die stigterslede en Joey, Richard en Teddy dinamiese sangers,” sê Jacobs. John Walton Secondary School’s junior grades for the first time participated in the Uitenhage district’s Economics and Management Sciences Olympiad. “What was surprising, was the good performance by our learners. Although they did not win nor finish among the top three, the learners showed their metal by winning some of the well-established schools,” said Phillip Joseph, deputy principal at John Walton Secondary School. Grade 8 and 9 learners made their mark during the department of education’s first
round of the Olympiad. “This laid the foundation for the learners to participate in the next round, which was sponsored by the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants. Again John Walton’s learners excelled,” said Joseph. These learners were educated and trained by a team of educators which include Elmarie Pillay, Steven George, Earl Erasmus and the Joseph brothers, Phillip and Winston. John Walton is looking forward to the 2017 Olympiad as they are eager to better their results.

Bergsig rugbyspelers gekies vir SA skolespan Bergsig het weer vanjaar ‘n sterk verteenwoordiging in die Oostelike Provinsie se LSEN rugbyspan gehad met 12 van die 20 spelers, sowel as die kaptein en onderkaptein uit dié skool se stal. Walter Lindner, Duitse ambassadeur, was agter die stuur van die ambassade se opgeknapte Kombi in die kleure van die Duitse vlag om pendelaars in die township rond te ry. Lindner was self voorheen ’n taxibestuurder in Duitsland. Voordat hy hier die strate slegs vir die dag kon invaar, moes hy eers sy “taxi-geloofs-
briewe” by lede van die Mamelodi-taxivereniging kry. Dit het onder meer ’n mengeldrankie van Coke en Fanta ingesluit wat Lindner in een sluk ten aanskoue van die ander taxibestuurders moes afsluk. Lindner het hulle toe uitgevra oor hul lewe as taxibestuurders en of hulle genoeg geld verdien om vir hul families te sorg. Almal het dadelik “nee” geantwoord. Die Kombi, wat van 1971 dateer, heet deesdae #KhombiSAGermany, ’n woordspeling van die Zoeloe-uitdrukking “Khombisa” (om te wys) en soos wat Suid-Afrikaners in die volksmond na die Volkswagen-mikrobus ver-

Body builders off to world champs HEILIE COMBRINCK
T
wo body builders from Uitenhage are heading to the world championships which will be held in Dinant, Belgium during November 25th and 26th. Within a year since Deenan Africa (18) joined this sport, he was crowned the overall winner at his first ever competition, the Despatch Classic, and selected for the national team. South African body building Masters champion, Mopp Arends (66) said, “I’ve noticed his natural talent and offered my professional training. His strength is more than physical, his will power is amazingly strong.” As a former McCarthy Comprehensive High School rugby player, Africa was a regular visitor to the gym. He bade the ball game farewell and opted for weights and workout machines as his new lifestyle. Arends started his body building career at the age of 39. He said performing the 7 body building poses takes an average of 30 minutes of ultimate muscle power and concentration. “Its all about discipline, a healthy body and
strong mind. I will continue with this sport for as long as I can.” Last year he went to Barcelona where body builders from 16 countries participated. Arends came second in the category for Masters aged 60+. The South African body building team which will participate in the world championships in Belgium consists of 18 members of which 6 are from the Eastern Cape, with Africa being the youngest.
Chicken braai and evening of song
The cost for Arends and Africa to attend the world championships is R18 000 per team member. As part of their fund-raising efforts a chicken braai will be held on Saturday at 22 Ostrich Street, with an evening of song at 19:00 on Sunday at the Methodist Church, Patrys Street. The men urge the public please to support their fund-raisers and will also be thankful for any other sponsorships towards their participating at the world championships. )For more information contact Mopp Arends at 060 349 5544.
