Befaamde oudonderwyser en koorafrigter wat Despatch Primêre Skool se koor tot op nasionale verhoë gelei het. “Alle opbrengste wat ons met dié optrede maak, word in die beursfonds vir behoeftige matrikulante, wat uitstekende potensiaal vir tersiêre studies toon, te stort, sê Venita.

Saterdag se Welwillendheidskonsert begin om 18:30 in die Uitenhage Congregational-kerk en kaartjies is R30 per persoon. ’n Hele paar gaskunstenaars gaan saam met die gekombineerde koor optree en daar is groot opgewondenheid oor die nuwe manne-koor van die Metro, The Creed, wat oral harte steel met hul fluweelstemme. Watch out: New SASSA card scam

he festive season is upon us and people with sinister intentions are already targeting SASSA beneficiaries with the intention of cheating them through all sorts of scams. Social grant beneficiaries have been inundated with text messages urging them to obtain new cards which are green in colour before January 2017. “SASSA never communicates with its beneficiaries through SMS and beneficiaries are warned not to respond to any SMS that these impostors are sending to them,” said Kgomoco Diseko, SASSA National Spokesperson. SASSA advises all its beneficiaries not to fall for this scam because there are no new

SASSA cards and it is not true that beneficiaries should get these cards before January 1st, 2017. “Beneficiaries should be on the lookout for people requesting their personal and card details pretending to be from SASSA,” said Diseko. SASSA conducts its business from its own offices and beneficiaries should not accept invitations to any other office. The SASSA card is also not green. The only valid SASSA card has the colours of the South African flag and it will never be replaced by a card that is green in colour. “The danger of responding to these scams is that beneficiaries could be stripped of their cash or unusual deductions which they never

authorised would come off their grants in the near future. “Beneficiaries should make sure that they do not give their personal details or card details to strangers because it can also create identity theft. And this is a way of assisting those who have an interest in art by earning the right art tools. Who

Stokvel integral part of economic mainstream A

fri-Save Cash and Carry hosted more than 1 400 stokvel members from Nelson Mandela Bay, at its fifth annual Stokvel Day event, themed the Big Five in Uitenhage. The Afri-Save Stokvel Day aimed to uplift, empower and acknowledge the importance of the stokvel community. Guest speakers included Nelson Mandela Bay deputy mayor Mongameli Bobani. The National Stokvel Association of SA (Nasasa) revealed that collectively the stokvel economy is an estimated R49 billion in South Africa. Nationally there are more than 11,5m individual stokvel members, belonging to over 811 000 groups. “Stokvels are growing in popularity and these businesses run on a daily basis in South

Africa and form an integral part of the economic mainstream. We established our AfriSave Stokvel Day five years ago and this is growing annually,” said Munir Jeeva, CEO of Afri-Save Cash and Carry. The Afri-Save Stokvel team which provides an administrative service, networks with stokvel members to determine their needs, and then assists by meeting these needs. “The Afri-Save Stokvel team identified what these stokvel members needed and we have then themed the event around these needs, the Big Five. We then offered these five items for free to all the stokvel members. These were free transport to and from the event; free breakfast; free lunch; and free gift bags.”

The official opening of the office is this coming Saturday at the Willow Dam Garden Centre in Cuyler Street, where owner Jacky Sharp has granted the volunteers space to operate from. “Every person who goes through the experience of breast surgery as a result of cancer, has to talk about her feelings and fears, and this is where Reach For Recovery volunteers fulfil a tremendous role,” said Estelle Botha, Chairlady of Reach For Recovery. Most of the Reach For Recovery volunteers are women who have undergone surgery themselves as a result of breast cancer. They have received thorough training to visit patients in hospital and at home. The Reach For Recovery office now offers breast cancer survivors the opportunity to visit the volunteers in a tranquil environment for emotional support and practical help with the fitting of bras and breast prosthesis. It also serves as an information centre regarding breast cancer and the way forward after surgery. “Normally, once a breast cancer patient has

Although the results were negative, I continued my urge and that is how my path crossed with Reach For Recovery,” said Jacky. “Therefore I thought this container would be ideal and the location is pretty much central for the ladies who have to come here by taxi,” said Jacky. Bras and prosthesis Usually, after breast surgery, the cancer survivor will wear a softish cover filled with soft batting which should be worn for six weeks. These softish covers are the affordable way for most women as a prosthesis is expensive and costs an average of R950. “There are no dues and no charges. We render a voluntary and free service to any person with breast cancer,” said Estelle. The Reach For Recovery office hours will be Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays

Borg tande en gee só ’n breë glimlag Baie mense wat nooit breed glimlag nie, is nié suurknolle nie. Hulle is van die mense wat te skaam is om te glimlag omdat hulle nie tande kan bekostig nie, het Ralph Meintjes van Uitenhage aan Heilie Combrinck vertel. Maar deur sy Adopt-ASmile-projek kan baie van dié skames weer glimlag.

Glimlag is woordeloos, tog word dit in die wêreld se nagenoeg 6 500 tale goed verstaan as een van vriendelike meelewendheid.

Enige mens sal ’n breë glimlag onthou. Enige normale mens glimlag graag breed. Sommige mense, al klop hul harte pure liefde, wil egter glad nie glimlag nie. Opstrôppelisgeit? Nee . . . tande! Of liewers, die gebrek daaraan. En as daar een man is wat passievol is om die “tandloses” se selfbewustheid met ’n stel tande te genees, dan is dit Ralph Meintjes, tandheelkundige tegnikus van Uitenhage. “Dit breek my hart as ek sien iemand steek ’n glimlag agter ’n hand weg. Dit hoort mos nie so nie, ’n glimlag is iets wat die wêreld moet sien.” Maar Ralph verstaan hoekom hulle hul glimlagte bly wegsteek, want nie almal het die geld om tande te koop nie. Nadat hy ’n berig gelees het van ’n man in Graaff-Reinet, wie se hartewens dit was om ’n stel tande te kry sodat hy ’n steak vir Kersfees kon geniet, het Ralph besluit om te help. Hy het die man via die koerant gekontak en ’n stel tande vir hom gemaak. Dié man se dankbaarheid het Ralph en sy vrou, Crystal, oortuig om Smile Ministries International, ’n organisasie sonder winsbejag, met Adopt-ASmile as die vlagskipprojek te stig. Dit kom kortliks daarop neer dat enigiemand ’n glimlag (stel tande) vir ’n behoeftige kan borg. Ralph doen sy werk gratis. Slegs die materi-

aal- en laboratoriumkoste word verhaal.

14 Kersfeesglimlagte

Hy het verlede jaar as Kersgeskenk, 14 mense weer laat glimlag nadat hy vir elkeen ’n stel nuwe kunstande gemaak het danksy finansiering deur die Adopt-A-Smile-projek. Verlede jaar was dit Ralph se mikpunt om vir 40 mense kunstande vir Kersfees te maak, maar weens beperkte geld kon hy net 14 laat glimlag. Hoewel Adopt-A-Smile as ’n Kersprojek begin het, het die groot nood van die skaam tandloses Ralph só oorweldig dat dit nou ’n voltydse projek is. “ ’n Vol stel kunstande kos ongeveer R4 000. Daarom is daar so baie mense wat tandloos rondloop, hulle kan dit nie bekostig nie.” Ralph sê hy sien homself as ’n hedendaagse Josef. “God het my die droom van Adopt-ASmile gegee. Ek weet ek het ’n gawe gekry om deur my beroep mense weer te laat glimlag. En ek sal aanhou hoop dat hierdie droom sal waar word.”

Borg ’n glimlag

Met Adopt-A-Smile wil Ralph maatskappye kry wat as borge ’n tandlose kan “aanneem”. Sy plan is om ’n databank van mense wat kunstande benodig, en die spesifieke koste van elkeen se kunstande, saam te stel en dit aan borge voor te lê. Ralph sê hy kan ’n boek skryf oor mense wat weer onbevange kon glimlag nadat hulle

Een van dié mense is Leona Lightfoot wat haar stel kunstande verlede Kersfees gekry het. “Soos my wange nou in die lug is van my glimlag, is dit nog die heeltyd sedert ek my nuwe tande gekry het. Nou kan ek weer praat sonder skaamte en my glimlag wil nie ophou nie!” Victor McHugh het weer vertel hoe hy sy “ou lewe” teruggekry het danksy Ralph se Adopt-A-Smile-projek. “Al was dit net my twee voorste tande wat uit was, kon ek nie mense in die oë kyk nie. Was dit nie vir Ralph nie, was ek nou nog die ou met die gap.”

Onvergeetlike oomblikke

Ralp sê hy kan sien hoe mense se persoonlikhede ingeperk word as ’n tand of meer uit is. “Maar ek sien ook hoe hierdie selfde mense weer sonder ’n hand voor die mond lag as die gaps toe is. “ Jissie, dit is ’n gevoel wat ek nie in woorde kan beskryf nie. En elke keer sê ek dankie Here, want dit is so lekker om te sien hoe hierdie mense weer glimlag.”

Beskerm jong glimlag

Oor die jare het Ralph in sy beroep gesien wat se skade kontaksport aan veral jonges se tande aanrig. Daarom behels sy Adopt-A-Smileprojek ook die bewusmaking by skoolkinders oor die belangrikheid om ’n mondskerm te dra wanneer kontaksport beoefen word. “Ouers en kinders is nie gepla oor mondskerms nie. Maar hulle besef nie die geweldige risiko om aan kontaksport soos rugby deel te neem sonder om ’n mondskerm te dra nie.

Kunstand-kansvatters

Op ’n meer somber noot vertel Ralph ook van dié wat wél kunstande kan bekostig, maar tog om gratis hulp kom aanklop. Om dít uit te skakel, doen Adopt-A-Smile nie net deeglike behoeftebepalings oor die individue se omstandighede nie, maar werk ook ten nouste saam met ’n tandarts op Uitenhage wat ’n volledige ondersoek en kostebepaling doen.

Planning accommodation, routes and stopovers, but everything can come to a halt if the crucial bit of paperwork such as a border letter is not done. “Even the best-made plans can be ruined if you’ve forgotten to get your border letter and certified copies of your vehicle registration,” said Rudolf Mahoney, Head of Brand and Communications at WesBank. Driving across the border is not as simple as having a valid passport and driver’s licence. The South African government has been actively enforcing laws that require motorists to present extensive documentation when leaving the country. Before planning a cross-border trip, drivers should phone their insurance companies to establish that their comprehensive insurance policy covers cross-border travel. They may need to include details of the country they are travelling to. Some neighbouring countries may request that drivers have international insurance. Failure to do so puts drivers at risk should their vehicle get stolen or damaged outside South Africa’s borders. Any driver who crosses the border in his or her car is required to have a certified copy of the vehicle’s registration papers. Financed vehicles can be taken out of the country only with permission from the financing bank. WesBank has made the border letter and vehicle registration process easier through its online self-service portal. Drivers who are not the registered owners of the vehicles they are using will need all of the above documentation, plus two additional documents: a police affidavit and a letter of authority from the registered owner, granting permission for the vehicle to cross the border for the agreed time frame. What is needed to cross a border: )The driver of the vehicle needs to have a valid driver’s licence and passport. Check the expiration dates before travelling. )Contact your insurance company to ensure that your comprehensive insurance policy includes cross-border travel. )A driver will be required to have a certified copy of the vehicle registration or the vehicle licence. If the vehicle is financed, get a letter from the bank giving authorisation to take the vehicle across the border. )Drivers of rental vehicles must have a letter from the rental

company giving full consent to take the vehicle out of the country. )It is compulsory for any South African vehicle, caravan or trailer to have a ZA sign displayed when it crosses any of the borders. )Some countries require drivers to place the blue and yellow warning triangle or the T-sign on the caravan or the trailer towing a boat. )Other neighbouring countries require drivers to have a set of red warning triangles in his or her possession as well as reflective jackets. )Double-check what stickers, triangles or safety gear will be needed before departing. Cross-border: What to pack and how to prepare Before embarking on a long journey make sure that the car is in tip-top condition. If travelling across South Africa or into neighbouring borders it is a good idea to book a quick service to check that the brakes and shock absorbers are ready for the bumpy roads. Most of the time breakdowns are caused by minor problems that could have been solved by having the right equipment in the car. Never leave home without: ( A charged cellphone ( and charger) with road-side assistance numbers ( First aid kit ( Warning triangle and reflective jacket ( Tow rope ( A multi-tool ( Flashlight ( Jack and wheel spanner ( Jumper cables ( Tyre compressor & tyre puncture repair kit ( A large bottle of water, in case the engine overheats. The day before the trip, ensure that the tank is filled up and tyre pressures (including spare wheel) are checked. It is also a good idea to leave before the sun rises to take advantage of the cooler weather and quieter roads. Drivers should give themselves enough time on the road to reach their destination without rushing, and allow for fuel stops and bathroom breaks.

Fly over homes to solve housing challenges “Blue Sky” thinking has led to Port Elizabeth property developer Johann Dreyer and his team at Direct Group Africa identifying the space above suburban homes as prime real estate. “We know that most municipalities are faced with the challenge of providing services, schools, clinics and other facilities to communities whose homes are stretching farther and farther into the veld. “Residents also suffer because they are being housed far away from centres of employment,” he says. One solution is to use modern building materials to build “fly over” homes – which effectively adds a second storey to an existing house, but are totally separate.

The technology is a modular building system consisting of steel-framed expanded polystyrene panels, that has been developed over the past 10 years. “Most of the legalities around ownership have been sorted out, and we have the support of municipalities,” he says. The housing package is aimed at families wanting to provide safe and comfortable homes to grown children, parents or grandparents. Municipalities benefit because they can optimise the use of existing road, sewerage, water and power infrastructure. The finance package makes provision for R20 000 to pay off any municipal arrears, and includes the upgrading of the existing home.

Adventure run, relay and MTB event What began as a few friends connecting the dots in 2013 is now set to become a real adventure to be remembered: the Dolphin Challenge! Previously the event was known as Jbay2PE and saw friends running from Jeffreys Bay to Maitlands River Mouth. They did this for fun and as a training run. This year the Dolphin Challenge will take place on Sunday, December 11th from 06:00 to catch the low tide at 07:30 in crossing the river. Runners, both individuals and relay teams, are going to line up at the Kabeljous River start in Jef-

freys Bay and make their way along the beach to Maitlands River Mouth. This includes the popular swim through the Gamtoos River where assistance will be provided by EC Coastal Water Rescue and residents with a boat. The event has been renamed the Dolphin Challenge because the route looks like the back of a dolphin and Nelson Mandela Bay is the “Bottlenose Dolphin Capital of the world”. Night and day rally this weekend T

he final showdown of the Algoa Rally 50k championship for 2016 will be decided at the Heinesport Rally to be held in the Uitenhage area tomorrow and on Saturday. It starts tomorrow evening at 20:00 at the Aldo Scribante race track and finishes at Jachtvlakte near Uitenhage on Saturday afternoon around 16:30 with the prize giving at Rangers Outdoor Game Lodge. The 50k championship started in April with the first of 7 events which have been held in Port Elizabeth, Uitenhage and Jeffrey’s Bay, including the Volkswagen national rally and Baywest and Fountains Mall shopping centre events which have been well supported by spectators and shoppers. VW Polo to win Algoa Rally Club competitors compete for lucrative prizes at the end of the season which include a Volkswagen Polo Rally Car, racing suites and accessories, rally tyres supplied by ATS Automotive and Cape Fabric Engineering branded Gazebo for first place, all valued at over R100 000. Second and third prizes are R15 000 and R7 500 with cash amounts for points scored to last place sponsored by Heinesport. The Heinesport Rally will consist of night and day stages at Aldo Scribante race circuit, Motherwell farms, Spiders Web and Jachtvlakte. These stages will be repeated over two days as the final challenge for the championship known as the 50k challenge. The championship will be closely contested by the leading championship contenders of Johan and Jaune Viljoen, Rikus Schmidt and Sherilee Pieterse (fathers and daughters) currently in third place, Stephno and Lario Pieterse, all driving Volkswagen Polo 1600cc rally cars with 24 points separating the trio. Spectators will have the opportunity to view the cars in action at Aldo Scribante Race
