Shoe boxes needed to treat kids HEILIE COMBRINCK

oung golfing sensation from Uitenhage and captain of the Eastern Cape senior ladies team, Jamie-Lee Daniels (17), has set herself a goal of making 1 000 kids smile this Christmas.

How? By means of handing each child a shoe box filled with treats. Thirty boxes are already completed and she has received funds to buy items to fill another 200 boxes, but she does not have enough shoe boxes! This is why she kindly requests the public’s support. “It would be great if the public can support me with empty shoe boxes. They are also welcome to donate shoe boxes which are already filled with the items and nicely decorated. That would be awesome!” said Jamie-Lee, a Grade 11 learner at Riebeek College Girls High School. Her father Manie Daniels will for the second year host a Christmas lunch for the children from Moeggesukkel. Last year Jamie-Lee assisted him with the lunch and

saw the poverty and living conditions of the children. That made her decide to do something this Christmas to bring a smile to each of these kids’ faces. “The quote ‘nobody can help everybody, but everybody can help someone’ is what inspired me even more to do the Share A Shoebox project,” said Jamie-Lee. What is in the shoebox? Each shoe box contains a toothbrush and toothpaste, face cloth and soap, a toy and sweets. Boxes are prepared for children under the age of 14 years and there are boxes for girls and boxes especially packed for boys. Christmas lunch for kids The sit-down Christmas lunch for the kids from Moeggesukkel will be held on Christmas morning, December 25th, in a tent which Manie Daniels will erect in the township. Phenomenal ‘Mamma Woodsie’ to retire “Mrs Woods, you have fulfilled your professional ambitions. Now is the time to further achieve your personal aspirations.”

arilyn Dodd Woods attended Riebeek College as a learner becoming a Sub A (Grade 1) learner in 1957 and started teaching at her Alma Mater in 1972. Now, she bids it farewell as she will be retiring as school closes in December.

Colleague Sandra Gerber said part of the history of Riebeek College Girls’ High School is the history of one person’s involvement in the school. “With 6 decades of association with the school, Mrs Woods has been the link between the old and the new. She has ensured that a Riebeek girl of today has the same principles and grounding that she received,” said Gerber. “Ask many Old Girls about their memories of Riebeek and they will tell you of Miss Dodd or Mrs Woods, for she has influenced the development and future prospects of many Old Girls and the school as a whole.” She made history becoming the first Old Girl to become a principal at the school. During her reign the school received really smart bathrooms, an admin block and boardroom and the school pool was named after Penny Heyns. “Mrs Woods has been involved in numerous aspects of the school, and in all her undertakings she has forested a love of Riebeek among all she comes into contact with. “One of the most important parts of being a Riebeek learner is learning about appreciation. “In fact, letter writing is important at Riebeek and Mrs Woods had the learners write to many celebrities, such as those at Buckingham Palace, presidents of South Africa and sport players,” said Gerber. As principal she ensured the school received national exposure. The school featured on Good Morning SA and thanks to her, even Oprah Winfrey knows about Riebeek College. Professor Jonathan Jansen put it well, during the toughest time last year when he wrote in a national newspaper that Mrs Woods is “the rock on which many relied” Gerber said Mrs Woods is tolerant, has a lot of energy and her knowledge and thirst for knowledge knows no limit. “Her direct, tactful and friendly approach endears Mrs Woods to all. She believes in herself and therefore has no need to tear apart the characters of others.

Clamp down on illegal car guards CARA-LEE DORFLING Metro police in Nelson Mandela Bay is clamping down on car guards working without permits. “The operation had already started last Thursday, where all car guards who cannot prove that they are registered with Psira (the regulatory authority for the private security industry) are warned and fined,” said John Best, mayoral committee member for safety and security. According to Best, the illegal car guards were first warned and stripped of their bibs. Best said the metro police confiscate the brightly coloured bibs used by car guards to identify themselves as guards, if they are not

Riebeek donates an astounding R27 000 to SPCA R

iebeek College Girls’ High School’s annual support of the Uitenhage SPCA once again, surpassed all expectations. An awesome amount of R27 000 has been collected from activities and work throughout the year. This year the Grade 6 classes also visited the SPCA for their class outings, where they learnt and experienced the care and feeding of all the stray and abused animals first hand. “The visit was also tinged with sadness as the reality of the plight of so many cats and dogs in particular, was realised. They knew that their contribution towards this very worthwhile cause was much needed and appreciated,” said Marilyn Woods, principal of Riebeek College Girls’ High School. Visiting the school to receive the donation were Attie Erasmus, Angie Buuk and a furry friend, Pepe, all from the SPCA. Erasmus paid tribute to Riebeek teachers Betty Lynch, Patty Metcalf and Janet Skeates whose influence has seen Riebeek contributing annually without fail, to the Uitenhage SPCA since the 1960s. Mrs Lynch had introduced a fund for sterilisation of dogs and cats to allow old age pensioners to afford adoption and Riebeek had sponsored a cattery (the plaque was brought along to show the learners). “The young ladies at Riebeek College con-

Workshop to be held Water crisis: every drop counts on filmmaking ODETTE PARFITT

THE water crisis that had taps running dry in Nelson Mandela Bay last week, has been averted to some extent, but every drop still counts.

This was the warning given by Annette Lovemore mayoral committee member for infrastructure. “The water savings already applied, have been a great help. We are very grateful for the people who have heeded our call for help and hope they will continue saving water,” said Lovemore It is thanks to these savings that suburbs such as Lorraine, Rowallan Park and KwaNobuhle, which were without water last Thursday afternoon, now have water. “The water will be a little browner in some places because of the reservoir’s low level, but we are now no longer in a state of absolute crisis.” According to Lovemore, the Chelsea reservoir, which last week dropped to an alarming 6% of its capacity, stood at 30% on Friday . “It is still extremely low, because we keep the reservoirs at 100% usually, but it’s a start.”

The brothers will present a three-day workshop from December 19 to 21 to 15 budding filmmakers in the metro - with the possibility of a repeat course in January. “It was a love for the city we grew up in that enticed us to come back,” said Tom from India, where they are currently working on a documentary film about fair trade in the country’s cotton industry. “We appreciate that many people in the Bay set time aside to educate us and present opportunities,” said Tom. “Therefore, we want to give this gift now, six years later, to people who are in the same circumstances that we were when we started.”

Create films with little money

The course will especially focus on ways to create films with little money. “The industry is very competitive, but we want to share our experience and also pass on techniques that took us years to learn.” Participants will also manufacture a short film of 2-3 minutes during the course. The brothers only discovered their dream of making films after attending university. Before this love blossomed, Tom studied environmental science while James completed a year of music studies, both at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU). “At university, we did have access to a DSLR camera which we used to record our first videos for a surfing video competition. We won a prize in this competition.” Hereafter, they completed an online course and worked for a year at The Media Workshop under the leadership of Director David Lister. After making short films for the Father’s House Church for another three years, they relocated to Ireland. “The plan was always to go and work overseas and build up experience in large scale productions. In the beginning, we made shorter marketing videos before we started working as assistant directors for the fifth season of Vikings.” This experience was definitely a highlight for Tom. “My proudest moment, however, is the work we are currently doing in India. It is easy to get caught up in the glamour of the big productions, but we are actually doing it to build up experience that we can later apply to our own productions.” James confirmed this statement. “I learned a lot and met famous people, but to create this documentary together is a highlight,” he said.

“The smell is absolutely horrible. I have been sitting with this mess next to my house for the past 20 months. I’ve lodged numerous calls and e-mails with no positive outcome,” said Rene Berry, owner of the property in Adriaan Street, Uitenhage. She started reporting the water leak during March 2015. On Wednesday, 24th June 2015, Berry received an e-mail from the Department of Water and Sanitation, indicating that “Acting Assistant Superintendent Mr

Brookes advised that he will be investigating the leak.” According to Berry the situation remained unchanged with their property wall being damaged owing to the permanent dampness. “All I later received from the water leaks department is that the complaint has been reescalated to Cuyler depot. “This whilst e-mails and reference numbers regarding this leak are also escalating. Everything is escalating, so is my impatience as well. “I have been to the environmental health officers as I really think this is a health hazard. Apart from the stench there are mosquitoes, and the bird nests in the reeds attract snakes. I was told by environmental officers that it is not sewerage water, thus it is not a health haz-

ard,” said Berry. Local councillor Kenneth Kohl also intervened but with no positive outcome. On Friday, 25th September 2015 Berry received another e-mail from the waterleaks@mandelametro.gov.za saying “the complaint has [once again] been escalated to Cuyler depot for action with a reference number 766875.” It is heading towards two years since Berry started reporting the water leak next to her property. The situation remains unchanged. “We are desperate. You can see the constant dampness and water is affecting our boundary wall. Next will be our property. “This is not the kind of living conditions in which anyone would like to live. Why should we just accept it?” said Berry.

Palm shares that southern Africa is running out of landfill space and it is up to all of us to conserve our natural resources. “It is critical that conscious consumerism becomes a habit. Kikkie Wikkie op Kirkwood het ’n gedaanteverwisseling ondergaan en sorg vir nuwe skop in die Vallei se onderwys. Die skool is in 1982 deur die ACVV gestig met die doel om voorskoolse kinders van die Sondagsriviervallei te akkommodeer. Sedert Januarie 2016 is die skool by ‘n nuwe perseel waar 22 graad RR en 35 graad R leerlinge geakkommodeer word. Dit val

ook nou onder bestuur van Hoërskool Kirkwood. Die leerkragspan bestaan uit twee gekwalifiseerde onderwysers en twee hulpe. Die projek om die skool op te gradeer is met suskes aangepak onder leiding van Kenny Thatcher. Die skool is onlangs amptelik geopen deur Hoërskool Kirkwood se skoolhoof, mnr. van Brouwershaven.

Swimming twins aim for explosive performances in Canada U

is 50m long,” said Alaric. “For example, you will pace yourself in the 200m long course event but in the shorter pool it’s basically a sprint all the way. That makes it a lot tougher and much more intense.” In this year’s national short course gala Alaric won the bronze medal in the 200m breaststroke and silver in the 100m IM.

The Bassons have been fine tuning their preparations at the Herbert Hurd Primary School’s 25-metre pool. “We have been training really hard and the intensity has been right up there,” said Alaric. “We have been putting in eight sessions a week, including explosive gym training.” He said his goals were to achieve his personal best times in each discipline. “Hopefully I can make a final and then we will just have to see what happens. This is definitely another opportunity to make a mark for ourselves.” Alard earned a bronze medal in the 200m butterfly at the SA Short Course Championships. Alard, who will compete in the 100m butterfly and 100 IM, said the build-up had been “quite hectic”. He said the biggest challenge they faced was to adopt a positive attitude as they approached a meeting with the world’s elite swimming stars. “We will have to go there with the right mindset and that is always the test in senior events such as this because you have to be ready to compete against the top guys.” He added it was a perfect chance to show what they could do as they didn’t often swim in senior world events of this nature. “This is the biggest meeting we will have attended so there’s a lot of excitement, but also a touch of nervousness,” said Alard.
