Greatest farewell gift 100% pass rate HEILIE COMBRINCK “Gosh, have they reached their full potential!” These were the words of newly retired principal of Riebeek College Girls’ High School, Marilyn Woods, who visited the school to help with the processing of the matric results. “I am extremely proud. From when they were in the junior grades, I called them my potential class. “I challenged them to give me a great farewell gift in the form of great matric results and they have given me, their families, themselves and the school, a great gift,” said Woods. The Riebeek 2016 matric class obtained a 100% pass rate and a fantastic 90% Bachelor Pass rate.

Natheera Sirkhotte and Martez Meyer attained 5 distinctions each. “The past year has been equally tough and enjoyable. I am truly blessed to have such amazing teachers who constantly motivate us to try our best,” said Natheera Sirkhotte who plans on studying B Com Accounting at NMMU this year. “My biggest motivation was not making anyone else proud, but making myself proud.” Martez Meyer, deputy headgirl, said of her 5 distinctions, “I felt relieved, ecstatic and overwhelmed all at the same time. I couldn’t have done it without God, my family and friends, and importantly the staff of Riebeek College. I am extremely proud of my fellow matriculants as well as our 100% pass rate.” She intends on studying Medicine at the Stellenbosch University.

Pay municipal account and win a car or cash

ROSLYN BAATJIES

R

esidents of Nelson Mandela Bay Metro whose municipal accounts are being paid on time stand the chance of winning a car or cash.

“Everyone - except councillors, business enterprises and municipal workers - will be eligible to win a car (there are two cars to be won) or cash prizes,” said Retief Odendaal, member of the mayoral committee for Budget and Treasury. “We want to send the message to our municipal account holders to make their accounts a priority. It looks like 2017 is going to be a difficult financial year and it is also going to have an impact on the municipality. Our residents must try to settle their debt.” According to him, the recovery rate in July last year was just under 90%. The metro’s budgeted recovery rate is 94%. “In November, our recovery rate was about 100%. We are happy about the progress that we have made. “In November, 7 156 households made arrangements with regard to outstanding payments to the value of R68 million.” EOH Mthombo, the service provider that verifies the water- and electricity meter data

at properties, is sponsoring the competition. “EOH spent about R1 million on marketing and prizes for the competition and I hope that we will see the fruits of it in a couple of months. “There are cash prizes of R10 000 and R5 000 respectively. Lucky draws for this will take place at the end of February and March. Lucky draws for the two Chevrolet Sparks will take place at the end of July.” Leslie Reddy, EOH’s director for the public sector, said that there would also be a R50 000 prize for the ward that improves the most in their account payments. Mbuzeli Nogqala, the Director of Revenue Management and Customer Care for the municipality, said that all six municipal areas could win prizes of R10 000 or R5 000. “It is a lucky draw and the municipality’s internal audit department will play a role as observers.”

My yskas, boeke . .

“Alles is sopnat.”

Water shortages in lower lying suburbs M

etro residents are advised that hot weather conditions are expected to persist requiring renewed efforts to use water sparingly. “Nelson Mandela Bay residents are advised that hot weather conditions are expected to persist and require renewed efforts to use water sparingly as areas supplied by the Nooitgedagt Water Treatment Works (WTW) are currently experiencing low water pressure and shortages,” said municipal spokesperson Kupido Baron. He said the raw water input from the Scheepersvlakte Dam was not enough for the

Nooitgedagt WTW to cope with the high water demand from its supply zone resulting in Motherwell, Ibhayi, Chatty, Despatch and Uitenhage experiencing water supply difficulties. Residents and business in these areas could therefore experience low water pressure or water shortages as a result, warned Baron. Reservoir Hills in Despatch is the only suburb of the Metro affected by a lack of water supply owing to its location and the high water consumption by residents from surrounding lower lying suburbs which prevent sufficient pressure to build up to restore supply to the area.

According to Baron, the municipality has put plans in place to improve the situation, but improvement is dependent on the drastic reduction on current water consumption levels. Therefore the municipality is appealing to all residents, businesses and visitors to heed the call and use water sparingly as per water restriction notices. Baron urged residents to use water sparingly and remember to report all water leaks and abuse to 0800 20 50 50 or email waterrestrictions@mandelametro.gov.za. )Find more info on water restrictions by visiting www.nelsonmandelabay.gov.za.

Riding into the sky at Scifest Organisers of this year’s National Science Festival, Scifest Africa, have confirmed that visitors will have the unique opportunity to be taken on an exhilarating tour by scientists from the South African National Space Agency (SANSA). The festival, sponsored by the Department of Science and Technology, will take place in Grahamstown from 8-14 March. If you have ever wondered how many times you rely on a satellite in day to day living, then an expedition piloted by SANSA Remote Sensing Researcher, Phila Sibandze, is the perfect start to this journey into space. Join him as he navigates this part of the educa-

tional Tour de Science that will take visitors on a journey through the life of a satellite. SANSA Chief Scientist, Professor Mike Kosch, will then navigate the tour to give visitors a peek at rare footage of sprites (optical gas discharges which occur between the top of thunderstorms and space) recorded in South Africa for the first time. He will have visitors on the edge of their seats during a live demonstration where he will generate a sprite using a petrol engine ignition system and a vacuum chamber. )For more information regarding lectures, workshops and tours visit www.scifest.org.za from 6 February 2017.

or the third consecutive year Solomon Mahlangu High School has increased and held its top position in KwaNobuhle as the school with the best matric results. Although the matrics, teachers and parents of Solomon Mahlangu High School outside Uitenhage worked hard to realize the dream of a 100% pass rate, they missed it by just under 20%. Principal Mncedi Mtengwana’s unshakeable faith in the potential of his pupils is as firm as a rock. “At least we are now in the region of 80%. It can only improve from here,” he said on Thursday after the results were released. “I cannot say I am not disappointed. I am still very satisfied with and proud of the 81% who indeed passed. This year we aim to work even more intelligently and make the extra hours count.” The school’s pass rate of 81% is its highest yet. As recently as four years ago the school’s matric pupils had struggled to attain a pass rate higher than 30%. In 2013 the school opened for the matrics

a week before the rest of the country’s schools in order to give them a head start. In addition, a month before the final examinations, pupils camped in the school’s classrooms in order to prepare themselves collectively and strongly focused on their final examinations. In 2015 Mtengwana said they were very satisfied with a 76% pass rate and they hoped to see the whole matric class pass. Andiswa Mbola (19), one of the matrics, who celebrated her results at the school on Thursday, said that each matric had done his or her best, and had put in long hours, and it would not have been possible without the support of the principal. “The Principal was always the last one who went home. No matter how long the evening classes continued, he was there and he made sure we received extra tuition,” said Mbola. Amongst the past matriculants who collected their results at the school, this year’s matric class presented themselves for their 2017 school year. “The new matrics started school on Tuesday. The first days of administration having been done, today we can begin learning in earnest. This year’s matriculants must also do better than the class of 2016,” said Mtengwana.

“Die saak is by ons prokureurs. Ek glo daar

Ek sal alle beeste op my erf – of hulle my jaag of nie – doodskiet.”

Daar is skade daaraan berokken.

LUNCHBOX BOOSTERS:

Musiekskool Fuel your child’s body and mind registrasie A eersdaags gehou s schoolchildren prepare to return to the classroom for the academic year ahead, one productivity expert is advocating a healthy balance in diet, exercise, work and play for improved overall performance. “Kicking off a new school year is an exciting, and sometimes daunting, prospect. Many parents give their children a ‘pep talk’ at this time, encouraging them to do their best at school,” says Lizette Bester, Executive at Agility Corporate, who specialises in productivity. “Encouragement and support are invaluable, but there is more that parents can do to help their children achieve thier goals. Ensuring a wholesome nutritious diet, sufficient exercise and a healthy work-play balance can significantly improve concentration – and the best way to encourgae this is through leading by example.” Bester, whose job involves helping businesses and their employees to achieve optimum productivity through creative integrated solutions, notes that the types of food people eat and their activity levels can influence concentration. “Children and adults alike need to fuel their bodies and their minds with the nutrients contained in food, but choosing the wrong types of food can result in restlessness, lethargy and headaches, and are not conducive to learning or working. “Too many South African families are choosing convenience foods without considering what these may do for their mental and physical energy levels. “It is important to keep in mind that complex carbohydrates, found in unrefined wholegrain products, provide sustained energy to the body and the brain far better than simple carbohydrates, such as those found in sugar or white bread.”

Instead of buying lunch at the tuck shop, pack a healthy lunchbox, which should include low fat protein such as lean chicken, fish, eggs or cottage cheese, and at least two fresh fruits or vegetables. PHOTO:SUPPLIED

10 Top back-to-school tips for better concentration:

1.Do not skip breakfast – the brain needs energy to function optimally. 2.Instead of buying lunch at the tuck shop, pack a healthy lunchbox, which should include low fat protein such as lean chicken, fish, eggs or cottage cheese, and at least two fresh fruits or vegetables. 3.Avoid junk foods, particularly those that are high in refined carbohydrates, which give short lived energy boosts but result in fatigue or ‘crash’. 4.Instead of making sandwiches with refined white bread, opt for a low glycaemic index (GI) op tion such as wholewheat or rye bread for more sus tained energy. 5.Eat plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables, prefera bly a range of differentlycoloured ones, as these supply the body with the essential micronutrients that

will keep you healthy and on top of your game. 6.Fizzy, sugary and caffeinated drinks should be avoided. Water is best for hydrating the body and is essential for optimal brain function. 7.Pack a few small healthy snacks, such as raw unsalted nuts and dried fruit. 8.The brain needs at least 68 hours of sleep for effective learning. Staying up late in order to study is counterproductive. Managing screentime close to bedtime is essential to help both adults and chil dren calm down and achieve a peaceful state of mind that is conducive to sleep. 9.Exercise gets the blood pumping and supplies the brain with additional oxygen, which is highly beneficial to learning. Half an hour of exercise daily can sharpen the mind and make studying time more productive. 10.Make time for rest, relaxation and family time, as this is fundamental to a healthy balanced lifestyle.

Volgens hom gaan die metro ’n meer skeppende, innoverende en professionele manier gebruik om watersekerheid te verseker. opt for maximum protection if possible, but this also has to be weighed against the costs of installing CCTV cameras and intercom systems and of employing full-time guards, which usually translate into higher monthly levies, Kotzé says. “On the other hand, residents may decide that the additional cost is worth it for themselves or their tenants to have peace of mind, especially since most villages do not allow residents to keep dogs and many place restrictions for aesthetic reasons on changing the exterior appearance of the units with burglar guards or other security equipment.” Once the security infrastructure is in place, he says, owners also still have to agree on who will actually be responsible for running the communal systems on a dayto-day basis. “And then they need to think about any special security measures to be put in place during holiday seasons when many residents may be away, and also what specific actions are to be taken if the village security system is breached at any time. “They need to decide who will be responsible for calling police, their security company or emergency services in the event of intruders getting into the village or any other emergency arising. “In fact, this reaction procedure should be set in place as soon as the village is occupied and communicated to all residents.” BARKHUIZEN PROPERTIES Meanwhile, says Kotzé, it is worth rememO83 709 2022 bering that many people also want to live in SOEK DRINGEND HUISE VIR KONTANT KOPERS retirement villages so that they can have PENFORD R595 000 V/RH R880 000 SOLE A like-minded neighbours that they know and LOUNGE, 3 BEDR, BATHR, SEP LOO, 4 BEDR, 3 BATHR, KITCH BIC,STUDY, can count on – “and that the best way to fosKITCH U/C/STOVE, PANTRY, GARAGE L/D/TVR, 2 POS FLAT/WORK FROM HOME ter such an atmosphere is to be a good neighLEVYVALE R895 000 VANES R1 000 000 bour yourself – which includes keeping an 4 BEDR, 2 BATHR, MES, 3 L/ROOM, 4 BEDR, 2 BATH, 3 L/ROOM, STUDY, KITCH, eye out for anything suspicious that could LOTS OF BIC,U/C BRAAI AREA, D/G B/NOOK, BRAAI AREA, 1G, 2CP have an effect on the community as well as STRELITZIA R1295 000 MOSEL R495 00 U/C BRAAI A, 3 DECKS, 4 BEDR,3 BATHR, your own family or property”. THERE IS HOPE! He is Blessed To Heal And Perform Miracle

Until I, Andrew 38 years old from KwaNomzamo, Humansdorp, heard of Prophet Jerry, the blessed, my life was upside down and nothing seemed to be working for me. All my houses furniture was being repossessed as I could not afford them anymore as I had no money. Until a friend had referred me to the blessed man who came along and changed my life within a week.

Testimony for KING LWASA

My Names is Charniel Johanes from Western Cape. Firstly I want to thank KING LWASA for what he done for me in my life and for all success I have achieved because of him Financially. There are many doctors out there who claim they can change people’s life financially while they cannot do it and I’m saying this out of what I have been going through trying to change my life. Before I met the real one KING LWANGA, I lost a lot of money until last year 24th October when I read about KING LWANGA who helped a lot of people by using SHORT Boys to put money into their account in 2hrs and he only take 20% after the success of work. Am happy with my family and we got our own business running. He also got RATS to bring money in your house, MAGIC RING to win money games, Lost lover, Family Matters and Divorce all problems solved in same day

I want to thank Mama Sheena for changing my life, My name is Genevivi from Willowmore, I am a single mother who lost hope and money to different doctors, and prophets. Early last year I was shocked when I saw my old friend driving an expensive car, he took me home, on our way home I ask him what had changed his life in such short time. He told me his secret. He gave me a magazine with an article about Mama Sheena. I never hesitated. I contacted her and she explained to me things like: Shortboys to put money in account, Magic Ring to win money games and luck, Magic Wallet to multiply money. She also has Rats to put money in the house on the same day. She explained to me and I chose Shortboys. I followed the instructions, next thing I saw a large amount of money in my account. She asked me to withdraw her 10% and I was very excited - the money was real. And I told my sister about her and she phoned her for RATS. Now she is living a happy life. She has a Tavern business. Thanks Mama Sheena for changing our lives. From then she never contacted us and she also helps with: Lost Lover, Delete Loans, Divorce, Finish unfinished jobs by other healers. Call or whatsapp now:

Toyota’ ‘Tougherer’ bakkie makes history T

oyota’s “tougherer” new Hilux has made history by achieving sales leadership in South Africa for the 44th time in the past 47 years by notching up a 2016 retail total of 35 428. This is 3 000 units ahead of its nearest competitor. By recording 3 074 sales for the month of December, the iconic Hilux comfortably edged out its closest rival by 409 units. Toyota was also the only manufacturer to scoop an additional five segment bests for the month: •Csegment Corolla (614 units) •Compact MPV Avanza (271 units) •SUV Fortuner (958 units) •People carrier Quantum (916 units) •Specialist offroader Land Cruiser 79 pickup (185 units) Other notable sales performances were re-

corded by:

•Etios 597 units •RAV4 377 units •Prado 99 units •Land Cruiser 200 80 units And in the quest for overall sales leadership, Toyota (assisted by the Lexus and Hino brands) was once again the top choice for South African motorists, shifting a charttopping 117 071 vehicles in 2016, which equates to a market share of 21,4%. What it is telling is that the number-two and number-three placed manufacturer achieved market shares of 15,8% (86 472 units) and 13,5% (73 856 units) respectively. This means that Toyota led the sales race in 2016 by an unassailable 30 599 and 43 215 units respectively. Incidentally this is the 37th year in an unbroken run since 1980, that

Toyota has grabbed the number-one sales spot in SA. On the commercial front, Hino sold 232 units in December 2016, with Hino 300 and Toyota Dyna combining to achieve a 20.8% share in medium commercials. Commenting on Toyota’s performance, Calvyn Hamman, Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing concedes that 2016 has been an extremely challenging year, yielding the lowest domestic sales in three years. “That said, Toyota’s achievement has been nothing short of remarkable. The last time Toyota recorded a percentage share this high was in 2010 when we pulled off a 20,5 per cent market share. Our current 21,4 per cent market share means that for every five new vehicles sold in this country, one is a Toyota product,” Calvyn said.

Join Africa’s largest family beach event The fantastic beach weather which was enjoyed by holiday makers to Nelson Mandela Bay during the festive period resulted in a bumper attendance at the aQuellé Ocean Racing Series which took place on Hobie Beach last Sunday. With still 4 more rounds of the series scheduled to take place this summer, there’s still plenty of time for newcomers to join in the fun. The next round will be taking place on Sunday, 22nd January.

Sunday’s event enjoyed international participation with visitors from Dubai, New Zealand and Germany taking part in the swimming. It has become Africa’s largest family beach event, with over 500 participants registered for round 6. The 7 events taking place at the same time include swimming events as well as events on the beach like a 5km beach walk, 5km beach run and 1km beach run for kids.
