RECYCLING PROJECT: ALBERTYN COLLECTS 4 533KG RECYCLED ITEMS

n Uitenhage Albertyn Primary is known for their dedication towards recycling. The school has won third place in The Schools Recycling Project, after a total weight of 4 533kg of recycled items was collected at the school.

As part of the winning prize the school received a cash prize of R1 000, donated by Mpact Recycling SA. The project is based on the principle: “Tell me and I’ll forget. Show me and I may not remember. Involve me and I’ll understand.”

Emmy Nxayeka, Schools Project Coordinator of The Waste Trade Company who runs the project said, “We are so excited to kick the year off naming our top recycling schools.

“Looking back at 2016, in one year all of our schools managed to save an average of 8 800 trees.”

According to Kay Hardy, General Manager of The Waste Trade Company who runs the project, “Anyone who follows us is aware of all the exciting initiatives we have to motivate all participants to recycle.

“We believe that our future lies in the hands of our children, and therefore we are committed to making this project sustainable,” says Kay Hardy, General Manager of The Waste Trade Company which runs the project.

According to Hardy, the project has shown considerable growth in the last 4 years, 2016 being the year with the highest average volumes per month.

At Albertyn, teacher Johanna Huiskens is the coordinator of the recycling project.

She said they worked very hard to collect and sort all recyclables which filled a whole room.

“But you are only as strong as your team and many hands make lighter work”.

With the help of The Waste Trade Company, Albertyn plans to upgrade its recycling facilities so that they can start fresh with the new

Project saves industry from power black-outs

he completion of an R80 million slope stabilisation engineering project in Uitenhage has saved Africa’s automotive manufacturing capital from power blackouts, the South African National Roads Agency Limited (SANRAL) announced on Tuesday.

The instability of the R75 on-ramp into Uitenhage was undermining the structural in-

tegrity of pylons carrying overhead electrical cables supplying large areas of Uitenhage with power. It has been a source of concern for authorities and industry since 2012 when a part of the slope was damaged by heavy rains.

“Sloughing or erosion problems [of the slope] began in the mid-1980s mainly owing to the lack of maintenance. This, in turn, al-

lowed moisture to seep into the slope. Previous methods of stabilisation were not effective as they only dealt with close to surface water or moisture contained within the slope,” said Michelle Ah Shene.

The R75 was declared a national route in 2011 and was being investigated by SANRAL when the failure occurred.

“Every time instability occurred the failure zone encroached on these pylons, undermining the stability of the foundations.”

Recently, extensive slope landmass movements were triggered by heavy rains during October 2012 in the Nelson Mandela Bay metro.

The rains created a 50m wide and 300m long slip along the R75 on-ramp, resulting in the movement of soil to the lower parts of the slope along the failure zone, further exasperating the risk of damage to the cables and a potential power black-out of Uitenhage,” she said.

SANRAL on Tuesday said it concluded a slope stabilisation programme of the R75 onramp, and that stability of pylon foundations will no longer be at risk.

The programme entailed the excavation of 112 000m³ of soil, the construction of 5 700m³ of gabions in three continuous walls along the R75 on-ramp inclusive of grouted soil nails, construction drains at the top of the walls, and the installation drains conveying stormwater run-off down the slope to the existing drainage system.

The project also included the construction of an earth catch water bank at the summit of the slope to prevent overland flow from the summit flowing down the cut face.

SANRAL met and overcame two engineering challenges on the project. The first challenge encountered was the excavated face

beneath the southern pylon, which if completely excavated to its full height, would have been approximately 10m high.

“When it had been partly excavated some 6m to 7m it was prudent to install a system of temporary grouted soil nails plus geotextile and steel mesh to prevent the slope from collapsing. Had the temporary measures not been installed there would have been a danger of the collapse endangering the lives of any person working below and could have, quite possibly, brought about the collapse of the electricity pylon standing at the top of the face,” said Ah Shene.

Secondly, during construction where the excavations opened up the face of the cut slope, a geological fault in the material had been exposed, with considerable amounts of groundwater seepage from the fault.

“The fault could lead to further sloughing of the existing cut face on to the R75 on-ramp.

Additional stabilisation works in the form of gabions, soil nails, slope rehabilitation measures (top soiling and grassing) and trapezoidal drains were authorised.”

“Geotechnical engineering is one of the fastest growing fields of engineering, albeit a relatively young one.

“Many pioneers within the field have carved a path for those that follow to help fill in the gaps in our knowledge of the fascinating world that lies beneath the earth’s surface.

Ah Shene explains that most engineering projects deal with near surface challenges and solutions are effectively engineered, whereas slope stabilisation projects deal with more unknown challenges.

The project created 216 employment opportunities for 13 SMMEs over a 15 month contract period.

“Vanoggend (Maandag) is die reënwater wéér hier deur my motorhuis,” het Olivier gesê.

Maandagoggend se ligte reënbui het tot net ’n stroompie water deur die motorhuis gelei, maar die dik stroom water uit die verstopte sloot vroeër die maand het duisende rande se skade aangerig.

Olivier het tydens die oorstroming van sy

huis gesê die reën het in die afvoersloot agter die huis afgekom en toe dit nie verder kon vloei nie, het dit deur sy grensmuur gebreek en sy huis verspoel.

Olivier glo die vloedwater het sy huis getref omdat die stormwatersloot agter sy erf weens onwettige rommelstortings en die afwesigheid van onderhoud deur die munisipaliteit verstop is.

“Vroeër jare was een van my bure se huise ook onder water, want toe het die sloot by hom verstop.

“Dit is al ’n jarelange probleem.”

Roland Thompson, ’n SANRAL bestuurder, het bevestig die afvoerstelsels langs die R75 is hul verantwoordelikheid.

“Die betrokke dag (5 Januarie) het die gebied egter ’n fratsvloed ervaar en dit is moontlik dat die dreineringstruktuur meer water

This businessman single-handedly brought about in the establishment of the Lions Clubs International (LCI) with the motto “Service Above Self”.

Lions Clubs from around the world last week were requested to support a worldwide week campaign with the aim of relieving the hungry.

“It is fact that nearly 800 million people go to bed hungry every night,” said Hein De Vrey, president of the Uitenhage Lions Club.

The local Lions Club in partnership with Fuel on Wheels (non profit organisation) and the support of Entangled Freedom MCC organised a feeding project at Innes Primary School.

“Innes does not receive a subsidy for their school feeding scheme. They have to raise funds on their own to be able feed approximately half of their 650 pupils,” said De

“For Lions to be able to provide a service to the community we entirely rely on the community for their support.”

Donations of non-perishable food received from Bergsig Special School was used as the basis for the project. After the menus were finalized by Innes the balance of perishable foods was donated by Megasave Cash and Carry, Cuyler Butchery and Slabbert’s Butchery which contributed to the provi-

sion of approximately 560 meals.

Larger than usual number of NMMU applications Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University’s (NMMU) admissions office is currently dealing with large volumes of enquiries, while trying to finalise the 2017 admissions process.

“The university is aware that there are applicants who are still awaiting the final outcome of their applications following the release of NSC results last week and the admissions office is working around the clock to finalise this process as soon as possible” said Zandile Mbabela, NMMU Communication & Stakeholder Liaison.

The university is attending to a larger than usual number of applications this year with more than 110 000 compared to approximately 80 000 processed at this time during 2016.

“NMMU has space for only 6500 first year students and has thus far given firm offers to 6469 prospective students,” said Mbabela.

A number of programmes are already full,

details of which are available under the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) section of the 2017 intake website http://intake2017.nmmu.ac.za.

Some prospective students are still waiting to sit for access assessment tests before a decision can be made on whether they would be given firm offers or not.

Applicants who have a high APS on their final results and who have applied for programmes where there are still places available may be given the opportunity to write the Access Test.

Other applications for programmes with additional selection criteria in faculties are still pending finalisation.

“As first year registration is scheduled to start on Monday January 23, the admissions office assures that all applicants will know the outcome of their applications as soon as their applications are fully processed,” said Mbabela. (-Heilie Combrinck)

Students warned of hoax accommodation offered REPORTER The South African Police Service in the Mount Road Cluster is warning students to be wary when looking for accommodation to rent.

This warning was issued after a person was duped while applying for accommodation via the internet.

It is alleged that an 18-year-old student applied for student accommodation after viewing an advertisement on a well-known website.

The student contacted the person in the advertisement and made a deposit of R3 500 into the person’s account in order to secure the accommodation. Photos of the accommodation

A case of fraud is currently being investigated.
