Finance minister and his deputy to visit U’hage HEILIE COMBRINCK

he concern regarding the socioeconomic state of Uitenhage has led to a local organising committee of one of the churches in inviting Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan and his deputy Mcebisi Jonas to town.

The Parish of St Simon of Cyrene Anglican Church is situated in the heart of a poverty stricken area in Gambleville, Uitenhage, where drugs, alcohol abuse, crime and lack of educational support are the order of the day. “We have to do something. There is a need in our area for an educational centre to take care of our children and their future,” said Reverend Elliot Maseka from St Simon of Cyrene. “Therefore it is imperative that we partner with the business community in achieving our goal.” Support needed for project In support of this major project to bring change in a poverty stricken community, a gala dinner has been organised by what is called the Local Organising Commitee (LOC). It will be held on February 24th at the Volkswagen PeoplePavilion in Uitenhage. The special guest speakers in attendance at the fund-raising will include honourable Minister of Finance Pravin Gordhan, Deputy Minister of Finance Mcebisi Jonas (who was born in Uitenhage), the National Auditor General Kimi Makwetu, Premier of the Eastern Cape Pumalo Masualle and various other delegates. Proper education According to Lionel Barnes, former school principal of Gamble Street Secondary School and LOC convener, the planned educational centre at the church premises will accommodate Grade RR and Grade R classes. “If we want to have an impact on our community and bring change, we have to start now. The best way is through proper education and to have an influence from as early

as possible in a child’s life,” said Barnes, who has been an educator for 40 years. According to him they wish to start with these classes by no later than June 2017. “The bigger picture includes the expansion of the centre to also accommodate skills projects in future in support of economic development,” said Barnes. Opportunity to ask questions For the educational centre to be fully equipped funds are needed and therefore the gala dinner will be held.

Tickets are classified in platinum (R2 000 for top structures of industries), gold (R1 000 professionals and local businessmen) and silver (R300 general public). VC’s sobering welcoming address to students N

elson Mandela Metropolitan University’s (NMMU) first year students received a sobering welcome to the institution last weekend as vice-chancellor Professor Derrick Swartz highlighted the opportunities, challenges, rights and responsibilities in store over the next few years. Welcoming thousands of first year students and their parents in an address streamed live to various packed venues across all NMMU campuses, Prof Swartz expressed his excitement at having the new recruits join the institution. “We want to convey [to students] the rich opportunity to gain a unique qualification that will hopefully equip them with the knowledge and skills to enter into a very uncertain world,” said Prof Swartz. “The forces of globalization and economic liberalization have fundamentally altered the jobs landscape. “We need to give students the skill, knowledge and confidence to cope in this highly uncertain, very dynamic and fast changing world. They [the students] have to become far more entrepreneurial and creative in mapping out a future for themselves.” Prof Swartz also touched on the various challenges affecting the higher education sector – chief of which was the funding crisis that saw protests that nearly brought South African institutions to their knees. “We, as universities, cannot give free higher education, neither can we scrap the debt or fees for that matter. It is simply not possible and I cannot concede to that. It is a policy issue. Unless and until government effects otherwise, that is the way the system legally works. It legally enforces me to collect the fees.

CARA-LEE DORFLING Toe hy vir sy onderwyspos by Despatch inry, het hy gedink: Hiér gaan ek nie lank bly nie. Vandag is dit egter meer as 40 jaar later dat Theo Strydom (62), hoof van die Laerskool Sonop, sy das ophang vir aftrede. “Hier is ek 40 jaar later op die dorp wat ek met die eerste ontmoeting nie ’n kans wou gee nie. Nou kan ek myself ’n lojale Despatcher noem,” sê Strydom. Ná 30 jaar by die skool en 11 jaar as hoof meen hy dat hy sy doelwitte bereik het. “Een van my doelwitte was om ’n skool só te bestuur dat dit een is met leerlinge waarop die gemeenskap trots kan wees. Ek dink dié doelwit is bereik.” Vir dié boorling van Somerset-Oos was ’n loopbaan in onderwys egter nie altyd deel van sy toekomsplanne nie. “Ek het gevoel ek wil regte swot. Maar in daai jare het die regering, kerk en jou ouers vir jou gedink. Ek kan onthou dat my ma gesê het ek moet onderwys swot, en so het ek.” Die eerste ses maande by die onderwyskollege op Graaff-Reinet het Strydom baiekeer gewonder: “Wat maak ek hier?” Dit het egter nie lank geduur nie. Ek gaan niks doen nie totdat ek moeg niks gedoen is,” skerts Strydom.

Hat trick for Tigers against Brandwag Daniel Pienaar Tigers did it again. For the third year running the first cricket team held their own and beat Brandwag by no fewer than 6 wickets. This exciting game played last Saturday on Brandwag’s field was over before lunchtime. Heinrich Leibbrandt was the best Daniel Pienaar batsman with 19 runs and Dylan le Roux was outstanding with the ball. His figures read 5 wickets for 23 runs in 7.4 overs. Brandwag was dismissed for 85 runs in the 25th over while the Tigers needed only 17 overs to reach this target. The u/15A went down to Brandwag by 6 wickets. Daniel Pienaar is proud of

their second and u/14A teams who managed to pull off victories against Brandwag on Saturday too. In the 2nd team match Daniel Pienaar managed to score 190 runs while Brandwag was dismissed for 83 runs. Uthmaan Sirkhotte excelled with the ball – his figures read 4 wickets for 17 runs in 7 overs. Robert de Beer was the highest scoring batsman with 42 runs. Special mention has to be made of the u/14A team which beat Brandwag by 8 wickets! Here the best bowler was Johan van Zyl with 3 wickets for 2 runs in 2 overs. The best batsmen were Cameron Williams (50 not out) and Johan van Zyl (36 not out).

93rd River mile rebranded The 93rd River Mile will be rebranded as the SPAR Summer Festival to cater for a broader audience. “It was felt that by calling it the River Mile we lost the attention of families who aren’t into swimming. There’s so much more to this event than just swimming,” Michael Zoetmulder of Zsports. SPAR Eastern Cape advertising and promotions controller Roseann Shadrach confirmed this. “We all lead very busy lives but we feel it is important to find a

balance and events like this encourage family time.” The Summer Festival, which is hosted by Cannonville, is again expected to attract around 5 000 participants in a variety of events on February 25 and 26. Good things in store for local market H istorically there is always a lift in the real estate market in April, after prospective buyers and sellers have reviewed their finances and had a look at what is on offer. Chas Everitt Nelson Mandela Bay principal Charlotte Vermaak believes there are good things in store for the local property market in 2017. “Although 2016 showed a slowdown in the property market nationally, prices here have held their own. And although everyone wishes they had a crystal ball to reveal what 2017 has in store, we can only go by our experience, observations and what economists are telling us. “Generally, economists are more positive about growth in 2017, and it’s reflected in the number of people investing in property and the fact that banks are keen to provide finance in the urban areas.” First time buyers Millennials are hungry to get their foot on the property ladder and buy their first home, she notes. “Forty percent of home loan applications are being made by first time buyers, and banks are willing to help them. But as a buyer, first time or not, you do need to ensure that your credit records are spotless if you

Diehard ‘Birdies’ to celebrate rugby club’s 126th year HEILIE COMBRINCK

wifts Rugby Club is a real diehard club. Not only is it the only rugby club in South Africa which was founded by a Reverend, but most probably also the only club being celebrated long after its activities stopped during 1991. “Birdies” often referring to Swifts rugby players, will flock to Uitenhage on February 5th to attend the annual Swifts Rugby Club memorial service and reunion at St Katharine’s Church. “It is remarkable that the feeling of camaraderie is still so strong,” said Cicil Hayward, one of the diehard Swifts rugby players and an organiser of the reunion. Coats as goal posts During 1891, Reverend Charles Bloomer Jecks of St Katharine’s Anglican Church in Uitenhage, selected a team of youngsters from the church choir and entered them in the local junior rugby league. At first they were called the “Choir Rugby Team” but within the same

year, the team resulted in the establishment of Swifts Rugby Football Club. During the first games, there were no goal posts and coats were apparently placed on the field to mark the post positions. Whenever there was a kick, the referee had to decide if it was high enough to count as points. Popularity of the game Came World War I (1914-1918) the club was dormant as 86 Swifts players volunteered for duty with 14 of these men never to return. As soon as the war ended, Swift players again took to the rugby field, playing to raise funds for Red Cross and other organisations with an interest in humanitarian services. “Uitenhage would never have been the same if it were not for Swifts. The club meant a lot to the town, not only to those loving sport, but also to local businesses,” said Hayward. “In the heydays Swifts was the place where business deals were made. Local businesses supported the club big time and it was a popular club where prominent business people mingled.”

A typical match during 1921 was reported in the local press as: “Everyone in Uitenhage talked football and nothing else seemed to matter but this great rugby game. The crowd numbered over 4 700 and there were 94 cars. There could not have been many people left in town. They came in donkey carts, motor cars, cabs and ‘shanks pony’.
