T
he South African Police Service K9 units converged on the shores of the Nelson Mandela Bay for the national K9 competition where local members scooped 4 top positions. All 9 provinces as well as the SAPS Divisions Operational Response Services, Protection and Security Services and Presidential Protection Services competed in this national K9 competition. The competition was divided into 9 categories including tracker, narcotics detection,
explosive detection, patrol dogs, search and rescue, protected species dogs, fire investigation, currency detection and biological fluid detection. “This event offers a perfect opportunity to ensure that national standards are maintained as well as that the capacity and capabilities by both the K9 handler and dogs within the respective disciplines are enhanced,” said Colonel Priscilla Naidu. The winners of the various categories were announced at an awards ceremony held at the Boardwalk Casino & Entertainment Centre. The K9 members from the Eastern Cape who

However, the greatest challenge is soliciting dogs for the SAPS. “We encourage breeders and the community at large to consider donating dogs between the age of 8 weeks and 7 months,” said Col Naidu. Only pure bred dogs will be welcomed and the preferred breed of the dog can be a German Shepherd, Border Collie, Rottweiler, Golden Retriever, Jack Russel, Labrador, Dutch Shepherd, Blood Hound or Cocker Spaniel. Donors may contact their nearest police station to facilitate the donation.

olkswagen has donated R2-million to thirteen charities and non-profit organisations in the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan area. The donation is part of the Volkswagen for Good initiative. The beneficiaries include Adopt a Smile, Inter church Local Development Agency, Share,
Masikhonzane Pre-School, Phaphamani Rape Crisis Centre, Rotary Club of Algoa Bay Wheelchairs, CANSA, Northwood Childrens Hospice, Thuthuka Bursary Fund, Section 27, SAPS Education Trust, Ubuntu Education Fund and Sithandiwe ECD Centre. The donation will assist these beneficiaries
to continue with the good work they are already doing such as caring for the sick and destitute, providing refuge for victims and feeding the hungry. They all have a strong focus on positively impacting the communities in which they operate. “The work and services provided by these
charities mirrors the ethos of Volkswagen and the Volkswagen for Good initiative in that we all strongly believe in helping others. “I am grateful that as a company we can help these organisations by lifting a little of their financial burden,” said Thomas Schaefer, Volkswagen Group South Africa Chairman and Managing Director.
Muir old boy to head national association Muir old boy Andrew Binning, CEO of the Port Elizabeth based Inkanyezi Events has been named the new national president of the Exhibition and Events Association of Southern Africa. As the first ever EXSA president from the Eastern Cape, the appointment is significant. “The Eastern Cape’s profile as an event destination is growing and while there are limitations to the size of events
that the region is able to host, it will be an increasingly attractive option for international and national event organisers,” said Binning. “Access to Big 7, malaria-free game viewing is a unique and sellable feature of the Eastern Cape”, he said. he Uitenhage & District SPCA hosted a Rescue Love Story competition in celebration of Valentineâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Day and judges were overwhelmed with the well written stories entered.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;It was heartwarming to have read so many wonderful rescue stories,â&#x20AC;? said Deirdre Swift, chairperson of the Uitenhage & District SPCA. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Some of the stories were so well written that it at times had the judges in fits of laughter, and at times it had them in tears. Judging the winners was a very difficult task because each story was truly special.â&#x20AC;? The Uitenhage & District SPCA would like to thank all participants for their enthusiastic response. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This is the first year that weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve run this competition and we were very pleased with the amount of entries we received. We trust that interest in this competition will grow in the years to come.â&#x20AC;? The competition was initiated by friends of the SPCA, Ronel and GP Goosen. Winners: The stories were individually read and rated by a panel of 5 judges, after which the scores were tal-
lied. The 2017 winner is Lise Standring for her story about her best friend and soul mate - Caesar. The 1st prize consists of a R500 shopping voucher from the Vet Shop Uitenhage, a Sunday lunch for 2 at Bellaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s and gifts for her and her pet. Madelyne Victor won 2nd prize for her story about her dog, Austin Victor. She received a R250 shopping voucher at The Vet Shop Uitenhage and gifts for her and her pet. Elize Koch with â&#x20AC;&#x153;Liefdesbrief aan Johannaâ&#x20AC;? and Angelique Tee with â&#x20AC;&#x153;Love Wins Allâ&#x20AC;? tied at 3rd place. Each received a R100 shopping
voucher at The Vet Shop Uitenhage and gifts for them and their pets. Congratulations to Matthew Manasse from Convent Primary School for winning the childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s category with his story about his dog, Prince. Matthew won an Animal Encyclopedia and some fun gifts for him and his pet. Convent Primary is the school that had the most entries in the childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s category. â&#x20AC;&#x153;A huge thank you from the bottom of our animal hearts to Dr Snyman, owner of The Vet Shop Uitenhage, for so generously sponsoring the vouchers. ATM users warned: card swoppers are back U
sers of local auto teller machines (ATMs) are once again warned not to draw money if there are loiterers or suspicious people in the vicinity or if they think the machine is faulty. Owing to the high incidence of ATM card fraud, the South African Banking Risk Information Centre (SABRIC) would like to alert bank customers to an existing modus operandi, which has become prevalent again, to ensure that they are empowered to protect themselves and to prevent them from falling victim to criminals. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Transacting at ATMs is quick and convenient, but unfortunately criminals exploit this facility for their own fraudulent purposes,â&#x20AC;? said SABRIC CEO, Kalyani Pillay. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Criminals use various ways to manipulate and distract ATM users in order to gain access to their bankcards and PINs, and of course, ultimately, steal their money.â&#x20AC;? Criminals use various modus operandi to commit this kind of fraud, so it is imperative that bank customers be aware and take the necessary protective measures.
Card swopping modus operandi While using an ATM, an unknown person will approach the victims and try to â&#x20AC;&#x153;assistâ&#x20AC;? them. Their cards will be taken out of the ATM by the criminal who presses the cancel button for the cards to eject. Cards are then swopped without the bank customers even realising it. The card swop usually happens before the victims insert their PINs to transact, which prevents the transactions from taking place owing to the swopped cards being in the ATM. During this process of â&#x20AC;&#x153;assistingâ&#x20AC;?, the fraudster is close enough to view the PIN. The victims will then leave the ATM after the unsuccessful transaction, either with someone elseâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s cards, which they donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t realise at that point or without their card which were apparently swallowed by the ATM. At the same time the criminal walks away with the victimâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s card and PIN, which will be utilised almost immediately at another nearby ATM. By the time the victims realise what has happened, and arranges to cancel the card, their money has already been withdrawn.

“
My heart nearly jumped out of my chest. I could have sworn she smiled at me. I fell instantly in love with this lost, sad soul. And that’s when I decided to follow her ...
It was a day much like any other for me. I woke up on that warm, October morning and I was relieved that the rain had stopped. I was tired of being wet.
I went to the park like I did most days, except that day I went earlier. I wanted to enjoy the sunshine for a bit longer. You never know, it could rain again or those men could be there which meant that I would have had to leave fast! And that’s when I saw her for the first time. She didn’t see me, but I sat there watching her for the longest time. She looked so lost. She looked frightened and sad and forlorn. I wanted to go closer, but I was scared I would frighten her away and I really just wanted to look at her for a while longer. I sat very still, thinking, perhaps she would come my way and I could get a closer look. I thought she was so pretty, but she looked so neglected. I wondered if anyone had told her how pretty she was today. Or if anyone hugged her today. She walked there, with her head hung low and I wondered if this is what defeat looks like. She didn’t stay long. I almost followed her when she left! I barely slept that night. I nibbled at my food, meagre as it was. I kept thinking of her. I wondered if she would be back. I wanted to see her
- CAESARagain! So I made sure I was at the park early again, even though it was raining. She wasn’t there, but I waited in the rain for quite a while anyway. She never showed. I decided I would go back every day until I see her again! On the third day, when the rain let up, she was there! She looked even sadder than she did that first day, so I decided to go a bit closer. Maybe she needed to know there was someone who cared. And that’s when she looked at me. My heart nearly jumped out of my chest. I could have sworn she smiled at me. I fell instantly in love with this lost, sad soul. And that’s when I decided to follow her ... Because of that day, a friendship developed that lasted for 10 human years, but would be etched in infinity

and written in the stars. It was such a slow, gradual thing the love was instantaneous, the trust took so much longer. But as time went by and the days turned to weeks and the weeks turned to months, I saw her change. Small things at first. Little bursts of happiness, she started holding her head high for longer and she wanted hugs. Plenty of them. And the bond that
started developing was so beautiful and strong. She trusted me and I became her best friend. Together we laughed and barked and sang and howled and danced and ran and swam. We slept on that big king sized bed and we shared so many endless cuddles. I wanted to protect and love her forever and I know she felt the same
about me. We took long trips together. Sometimes we went camping and that was the best. She would use me like a pillow and we would sit by the fire and just enjoy being together. When we moved to a seaside town, our beach walks became the highlight of our days. Biting waves romping and rolling on the sand together and collapsing side by side, exhausted! Ten years we spent together. The best ten years of my life. When the time came and my tired body could no longer cope, she held me in her arms and told me she was okay. She told me I had healed her heart. She said I had healed her mind and her soul. She said it was okay for me to go, she knew I was tired. She said she would be fine, that she would miss me every day and that I should wait there over the rainbow bridge for her. She said we will always be together in her heart. In ’n oogwink verdwyn ’n groep van dié grys baadjies en daar staan die die woord “Brandwag” uitgespel in wit letters. Die afgelope paar weke is elke leerder in Hoërskool Brandwag soggens om 07:00 by die skool om saam te oefen vir die 2017 pawiljoenkuns. Hoe anders want daar is 67 bewegings om te vervolmaak en elkeen van die leerders het ’n rol om te vervul. Dié optrede is ter viering van die skool se 80ste bestaansjaar. Môremiddag om 13:00 kan die publiek gaan kyk hoe dié pawiljoenpret by Brandwag lyk. Die hele vertoning ontvou op die maat van gewilde liedjies. Verskillende Brandwag-temas sal deur die
pawiljoenkuns uitgebeeld word. Toegang na môre se pawiljoenpret is gratis en daar is genoeg sit- en staanplek by die skool se hoofrugbyveld. Die vertoning duur slegs 15 minute en is groter as die vorige optrede in 2012. Career expo to provide Grade 12s with various options T
he country’s largest Career Guidance Initiative - The Working World Exhibition - is set to offer the Matric Class of 2017 a range of study and career options when it gets underway at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on February 28. The Working World Exhibition, now in its 18th year, will be attended by over 150 schools representing 10 000 Grade 12s across the Eastern Cape and several dignitaries, including the Minister of Basic Education, Angie Motshekga. Andrew Binning, CEO of Inkanyezi Events, said the event and its free career guidance resources were an essential part of a learner’s career planning process. “The increasing number of learners achieving the National Senior Certificate attached to a fast changing working world adds pressure on school-leavers to choose study or training options wisely. The expo exposes learners to the available options and the needs of employers. These two must go hand-in-hand,” Binning said. “It is an honour then to host the Minister and other special partners like The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality and Coega, who supports a special session at the event for the leadership or prefect teams of our leading schools.”
Binning said the expo, which is free to all visitors and organised school groups, would feature up to 100 exhibiting institutions, including corporates and associations which provide study, training and ultimately career options. Exhibitors Employers or associations like Rosatom, Coega, Stats SA, CSIR, PWC, South African Property Owners Association, Volkswagen, the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality, SA Police Services, the South African Agency for Science and Technology Advancement (SAASTA) and the National Youth Development Agency would exhibit alongside a spectrum of public and private educational institutions. These include: NMMU, Rhodes University, Port Elizabeth TVET College, Varsity College, East Cape Midlands College, eta College, Damelin, MSC Business College, Ready To Work, Capsicum, St John and Total Concept Beauty Academy. Search is on for title holder of Mr PE uberMANn
T
he 16th instalment of the prestige Sun Boardwalk Mr PE uberMANn competition has officially kicked off. Nelson Mandela Bay will have a new representative when the new Mr PE uberMANn is announced in June. Entries to the competition will be open until March 22 after which the chosen contestants will start a six-week journey of self-discovery, self-development, skills development, physical training and many more activities to boost their self-confidence. They will be groomed in decorum, public speaking, leadership abilities, impeccable manners, dress sense and how to handle
peer pressure. The finalist will then be introduced at the Boardwalk Amphitheatre on May 1. Finally, the identity of the new Sun Boardwalk Mr PE uberMANn will be revealed at a gala evening on June 3 at the Boardwalk Hotel ICC. The Mr PE uberMANn title has grown considerably since its inception in 2002. It comes with a great deal of responsibility. The man chosen to fulfil the role of the Mr PE uberMANn must be a young man to whom the city’s youth can look up and must represent his sponsors and the people of PE with great aplomb.
The aim of the title is to embrace responsibility and encourage a positive impact through community activities. The competition has a proud record of active involvement in social investment programmes in Port Elizabeth. The 2017 titleholder will support three charitable organisations, namely The Association for the Physically Disabled (APD), CANSA and a charity of his choice. The Sun Boardwalk Mr PE uberMAnn 2017 will be responsible for garnering proactive community involvement and corporate social responsibility support for these chosen charities.

‘Juffrou’ aangewys as kampioenskut HEILIE COMBRINCK ’n Jong onderwyseres van Uitenhage is pas as die vroue-skietkampioen van die Grysboktak van die Suid-Afrikaanse Jagtersvereniging op Humansdorp aangewys. Christin Kruger is sedert haar grootwordjare op die plaas met skiet en vuurwapens vertroud. “Skiet en jag was nog altyd ’n familieding. So, ek is van kleintyd af blootgestel daaraan. Ek geniet dit, veral teikenskiet want ek is meer presies as wat ek vinnig is. En in die veld moet jy vinnig wees,” sê Kruger. As deel van die vereniging se kompetisies word ’n lewensgroot prent van ’n bok vir teikenskiet gebruik. Dele soos die hart is uitgemerk en ’n skut wat ’n kolskoot skiet, sal goeie punte behaal. Die kompetisies word oor verskillende afstande, posisies en met verskillende kalibers gehou. Kruger se telling was die hoogste in die vroue-afdeling en sy is as die kampioen-vroueskut aangewys. Renetta van der Vyver, bestuurder by Lake Farm het gesê “dit beteken baie vir ons 90 inwoners wanneer mense so gesellig saam met hulle kuier. Ons waardeer die tyd wat die
Pikkewyne afgestaan het om hier te wees.” Volgens Mansfield is die klub se kameraderie iets wat hom na aan die hart lê. “Ons doen alles saam as ’n klub. EC regional championships: stock car racing
Klawerjas play commences tonight
The first round of the Eastern Cape regional stock car championships will be held on Saturday at Victory Raceway in Victoria Drive, Port Elizabeth. Gates open at 15:00 and racing starts at 18:00. The competing classes include Development, 1660s, 2.1 Modifieds, Heavy Metals and American Saloons. The annual South African Klawerjas Board of Control tournament will be hosted by the Districts Klawerjas Union and played in Uitenhage at the VW PeoplePavilion later this year. At the recently held AGM of the union, Ivan Burgins was chosen as the chairperson with Deon Borchjes as deputy. The secretarial positions went to Nilan and Gay Jonkers. Go wild at Addo’s golf day The SANPark’s Honorary Rangers at Addo Elephant National Park (AENP) will host their 12th annual golf day on Thursday, 11 May at the Port Elizabeth Golf Club. Funds raised on the day will enable the park to fund counter-poaching activities within the park. The park covers over 180 000 hectares, stretching from the Karoo near Somerset East crossing the Zuurberg Mountains to the coast between Sundays River and Bushmans River Mouth and also includes the Bird Island and St Croix Island groups. Companies and individuals are invited to enter a 4-ball at R1 400 per team and/or sponsor a tee or green for as little as R500.
The field is limited to 136 players and women’s teams are more than welcome to participate. This is an opportunity to associate your company (or yourself) with the conservation efforts of the Addo Elephant National Park. As always, donations of prizes are also very welcome.
