New Volkswagen Polo GTI Five new Polo GTI facts: • 1.8 TSI 141kW engine replaces the 1.4 TSI 132 kW • Option of manual 6-speed or 7-speed DSG transmission • 0–100 km/h in 6.7 seconds; top speed 236 km/h. • New Polo GTI with manual transmission develops 320 Nm of torque. • Radiator grille and headlights with classic red GTI strip, distinctive side sill, customised rear spoiler, new ‘Parabolicca’ 17-inch alloy wheels

V

olkswagen’s new Polo GTI has a power output of 141 kW (9 kW more than its predecessor).

The figures for the new Polo GTI’s fuel consumption show just how amazingly efficient it is: 5.6 l/100 km (equivalent to 129 g/ km CO2) in conjunction with the 7-speed DSG, and 6.0 litres (139 g/ km CO2) with the 6-speed manual transmission. The dynamic heart of the Polo GTI is a newly developed four-cylinder EA888 engine. The 2.0 litre version of this engine family is used to power the Golf GTI. The new Polo GTI is equipped with the third generation EA888. The 141 kW of power is available from 4 300 to 6 200 rpm with 6-speed manual transmission and from 5 400 to 6 200 rpm with the 7-speed DSG transmission. For the first time, Volkswagen

is offering electronically adjustable dampers in the Polo GTI. These form the core technology basis of the new, optional ‘Sport Select’ suspension, which for the GTI is always available in conjunction with the optional ‘Sport Performance Kit’ (sportier tuning covering a wide range of parameters, all at the push of a button). The exterior of the Polo GTI features new bumpers, distinctively flared door sills, the GTI logo on the front wing and classic GTI insignia such as the red strips in the radiator grille and headlights. The Polo GTI is also available for the first time with optional LED headlights (dipped and main beam) as well as LED daytime running lights. The sporty design of the interior is accentuated by the classic GTI red elements. The leather sports steering wheel has contrasting red stitching, as do the gear lever and

handbrake lever; the floor mats also feature borders with red beading. The seats are upholstered in Alcantara with leatherette inserts. The driver and front passenger have top-class heated sports seats. Also standard are features such as: Hill Hold assist, XDS+ Transverse Electronic Differential Lock, Driver Alert System, Cruise Control and Automatic Post-Collision Braking System. The Polo GTI’s radio system has a Composition Media system with colour touchscreen offering Bluetooth connectivity for mobile phone and audio streaming, a proximity sensor and CD, USB, mp3, auxiliary and SD-card input and 6-loudspeakers. The DSG transmission was specially configured for the 141 kW GTI engine across a variety of individual parameters, characteristic curves and engine mappings. The sports suspension of the

new Polo GTI has been completely retuned to deliver exceptionally agile and secure handling. The chassis engineers have succeeded in reducing roll to a minimum to ensure that the new Polo GTI is agile and responsive. Safety on board the new Polo GTI is further enhanced by standard features such as ESC (Electronic Stability Control), Automatic Post-Collision Braking System and the Driver Alert System. The Polo GTI is equipped with a fade resistant 16” brake system. The front wheels have ventilated brake discs of 310mm diameter and at the back 230mm discs. The Driver Alert System detects waning driver’s concentration levels and triggers an acoustic warning for duration of five seconds. Your nearest Volkswagen dealer can provide you with the opportunity to test drive the exciting new Volkswagen Polo GTI.

Volkswagen Rally 2015

Great expectations for the Volkswagen Rally

Thomas Schaefer, Volkswagen South Africa Managing Director.

T

his is my first Volkswagen Rally as the Managing Director of Volkswagen South Africa. The activity around the build-up to this event leads me to believe it will be an exciting and interesting addition to my calendar and I look forward to attending this highly-anticipated annual Eastern Cape event. Volkswagen has been a longtime motorsport supporter internationally and I am proud to say that this is also true right here in South Africa. We recognise the enthusiasm people have for motorsport and competition, but we also

National Rally Calendar 2015 27/28 February Tour Natal - KZN 17/18 April Sasol Rally - Mpumalanga 15/16 May Secunda - Mpumalanga 19/20 June Bela-Bela - Limpopo 17/18 July - Eastern Cape Volkswagen Rally 14/15 August Cullinan - Gauteng 18/19 September Toyota Cape - Western Cape 16/17 October Polokwane - Limpopo

recognise that this competition is fuelled by people, as much as it is by technology and mechanical knowledge. Motorsport could not exist were it not for the people involved for, as much as it is a competition between vehicles and between manufacturers, it is also a competition between people. It is a sport that does not recognise anything other than talent and is perhaps the most democratic of all forms of sport because of this. Volkswagen is very much a company of people, creating cars for people and it is people who use those cars to compete. This makes motorsport a celebration of achievement by people, the people who race and the people who support them. I look forward to spending the weekend with fellow motorsport enthusiasts, following the rally competitors through the various stages and watching some of the best rally competitors in the country in action. While the VW Rally is my first home event with the team, it is by no means my first national rally in South Africa. In attending other events this season I have noted the enthusiasm that both the rally fraternity and the public has for the sport - an

encouraging commitment to motorsport in a challenging world and economic climate. An event like the Volkswagen Rally requires the full attention and dedication of everyone involved to make it successful and to continually fire the imagination of motorsport fans. It is easy to be distracted by the spectacle of the cars in competition and forget about all of the work necessary to create an environment for the rally to take place. I would like to take a moment and acknowledge the work that has been done - and every single person involved in the process to create the spectacle that will take place this weekend. Motorsport is as much about entertainment as it is about competition. Motorsport supporters seek out the thrill of the action while the competitors do battle for the points and, ultimately, the title of champion. The work done in creating the Volkswagen Rally, to allow both the competition and the entertainment to take place is not possible without the dedication of all the people involved both in front of and behind the scenes. For 12 stages this weekend, from the start on Friday at Auto Pavilion to the finish at Port Eliz-

abeth Oval Track Raceway, I encourage every person with the time and opportunity to enjoy the Volkswagen Rally as it weaves its way through the stages in search of the next Volkswagen Rally champion, in a tradition that has become as much a part of life in the Eastern Cape as the beautiful scenery, clean air and enterprising nature of the people who live here.

Enjoy the 33rd running of the Volkswagen Rally his year sees the 33rd running of the Volkswagen Rally, organised annually by the Algoa Rally Club with the indispensable assistance of Volkswagen South Africa. The focus of this event has been on making the rally even more spectator friendly and accessible to all. In this regard the work of Joe Fourie, the route organiser, and his team has been instrumental in bringing this national rally to the people of the Eastern Cape. There are 12 stages of competition that will take place over the next two days, we hope that rally fans enjoy each of these, at all times remaining safe and being courteous to other road users, as well as respectful of the private land which has been made available for the Volkswagen Rally to take place. In rural South Africa, many people have no access to transport – making healthcare, shops, community services and schools that much more difficult to get to. And with education being the foundation for the future, a child’s learning should not be hindered by their lack of mobility.

Of the 17 million children in South Africa, 11 million walk to school. Some spend 4 hours getting to school and back daily. Only 40% of South African students achieve a qualification higher than Grade 9, and half of children who enroll in Grade 1 will never pass Grade 12. 1 out of 4 girls in developing countries are not in school and 38% marry before the age of 18. Volkswagen for Good has partnered with Qhubeka and World Vision as part of the Bicycle Education Empowerment Programme (BEEP) to provide 1,100 bicycles to 20 rural schools in the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu Natal. Distance no longer needs to be a barrier to education. With each child gaining mobility, school attendance increases allowing the children to focus on their education. Every child deserves the very best chance at a better future. All it takes is one bicycle to make a big change.
