Elke stadswijk heeft een eigen karakter. In het centrum rondom het Centraal Station vind je multinationals en hotels. In het Laurenskwartier de Laurenskerk, Kubuswoningen en Markthal. Het Lijnbaankwartier is het winkelhart van de stad met grote warenhuizen, de koopgoot en de overdekte Lijnbaan. Het Lloydkwartier is een nieuw woon-werkgebied voor creatievelingen met monumentale pakhuizen en nieuwbouw.

The Lijnbaankwartier is the shopping heart of the city with large department stores, the Koopgoot and the covered Lijnbaan. The Lloydkwartier is a contemporary living and working area with monumental warehouses and modern buildings. In the Maritime Quarter you will find Port Pavilion and the Maritime Museum. Here you can also grab a terrace in the cozy Oude Haven or take a walk along the beautiful Maasboulevard. Leading museums such as Boijmans, Kunsthal and the New Institute are located in the Museum Quarter around the Museum Park. In the historic Scheepsvaartdistrict you will find the romantic Veerhaven, the large Park and the stately Worldmuseum. Lovers of multicultural shopping can indulge in West. And last but not least, the Witte de Withdistrict for fashion, galleries and a vibrant nightlife!

Rotterdam werd in de 13e eeuw gesticht nadat er een dam was aangelegd in de rivier de Rotte om het land te beschermen tegen overstromingen van de rivier de Maas. De dam werd gebouwd op de plek waar nu de Markthal staat. In de 16e eeuw komt de stad in opstand tegen de Spaanse bezetters. Rotterdam breidt uit met nieuwe havens en verdedigingswerken. In de 17e eeuw groeit de stad door handelsondernemingen zoals de Oost- en West Indische compagnies. In de 18e eeuw stagneert de groei als Nederland lijdt onder Engelse en later de Franse bezetting. In de 19e eeuw zorgt de industrialisatie voor toenemende handel en profiteert Rotterdam als havenstad van de trans-Atlantische slavenhandel. HORN OF PLENTY The ceiling of the Market Hall is a work of art made by Arno Coenen and Iris Roskam called Horn of Plenty. According to Coenen, it is the largest artwork in the world with an area of 11,000 square meters. The artwork is made of 4.500 pieces square aluminum panels of 1.52 by 1.52 cm. The panels are acoustically equipped with 3 mm-diameter holes.

AROUND THE MARKTHAL De Markthal ligt aan de gedempte Binnenrotte. Waar nu het plein is, stroomde vroeger de Rotte. Elke dinsdag en zaterdag is hier markt met meer dan 450 kramen. Vlakbij vind je de trendy Pannekoekstraat en Botersloot. Deze straat dankt haar naam aan de zuivelboeren die vroeger hun handel via de Rotte naar de stad brachten. Achter de Markthal loopt winkelstraat de Hoogstraat naar het centrum.

The Markthal is located on the filled-in Binnenrotte. Where the square is now, the Rotte used to flow. Every Tuesday and Saturday there is a market here with more than 450 stalls. Tegenover de Markthal vind je de opvallende gele Kubus woningen uit 1984 van architect Piet Blom. Elk huis stelt een boom voor en alle huizen bij elkaar een bos. Piet Blom ontwierp ook de 61 meter hoge woontoren (de Potlood) aan de noordkant van de Kubuswoningen.

Opposite the Markthal you will find the striking yellow Cube Houses from 1984 by architect Piet Blom. Each individual house represents a tree and together they form a forest. Blom also designed the 61-meter high tower (the Pencil) on the north side of the Cube Houses.

Gegenüber der Markthal stehen die markanten gelben Kubushäuser von 1984 Architekt Piet Blom. Jedes einzelne Haus repräsentiert ein Baum und zusammen bilden sie einen Wald. Blom entwarf auch den 61 Meter hohen Turm (den Bleistift) an der Nordseite der Kubushäuser.

En face du Markthal, vous trouverez les Cube Houses jaunes de 1984 de l'architecte Piet Blom. Chaque maison individuelle représente un arbre et ensemble ils forment une forêt. Blom a également conçu la tour de 61 mètres de haut (le crayon) sur le côté nord des maisons cubiques.

De Sint Laurenskerk is het enige overgebleven middeleeuwse gebouw in het centrum van Rotterdam. Ze werd gebouwd tussen 1449 en 1525. Tijdens het bombardement van 1940 werd de kerk zwaar beschadigd. De gerestaureerde kerk doet nu dienst als multifunctionele ruimte voor kerkdiensten en events. Van april tot oktober, op woensdag en zaterdag, kun je de kerktoren beklimmen voor het beste uitzicht over de stad. In de zomer zijn er extra beklimmingen. Kijk op de website voor info.

The Sint Laurenskerk is the only remaining medieval building in the center of Rotterdam. It was built between 1449 and 1525. During the bombings of 1940 the church was badly damaged. The restored church serves as a multifunctional space for church services and events. From April to October, on Wednesdays and Saturdays, you can climb the church tower for a great view of the city. The Erasmus Bridge is an icon of the city. The 800m long suspension bridge has a 139m high steel pylon/ tower mounted with 40 steel cables. The bridge was designed by Ben van Berkel (1996) and nicknamed The Swan because of its specific form. The Erasmus Bridge connects the northern and southern parts of Rotterdam.

Die Erasmusbrücke ist einst die Ikonen der Stadt. Die 800 m lange Hängebrücke hat einen 139m hohen Stahlmastturm mit 40 Stahlseilen. DE NIEUWE DELFTSE POORT Cor Kraat 1995 Hofplein Dit stalen kunstwerk is een reconstructie van de oude stadspoort, die eeuwen lang deze plek markeerde. De poort werd in 1940 tijdens het Duitse bombardement vernietigd. Een aantal originele onderdelen zijn in het kunstwerk verwerkt. This steel work of art is a reconstruction of the old city gate, which marked this place for centuries. The gate was destroyed in 1940 during the German bombardment. A number of original parts have been incorporated into the artwork. Dieses stählerne Kunstwerk ist eine Rekonstruktion des alten Stadttores, das diesen Ort über Jahrhunderte prägte. CLAVE. MONUMENT VOOR SLAVERNIJ Alex da Silva 2013 Lloydstraat 45-59 In 2013 werd 150 jaar geleden de slavernij afgeschaft in Nederland. Op 1 juli 1863 werden de tot slaaf gemaakten in de toenmalige koloniën Suriname en Nederlandse Antillen vrij verklaard. Tegenwoordig wonen meer dan 80.000 nazaten van dit Nederlands Caribisch verleden in Rotterdam. Dit monument symboliseert het lijden en de bevrijding van slaverij. Tijdens het jaarlijkse Keti Koti festival als de afschaffing van de slavernij wordt herdacht, verzamelen mensen zich rondom het monument.

LA FORÊT DE KRALINGE

Een prachtige groene oase aan de rand van de stad rondom de Kralingse plas. Fiets- en wandelpaden leiden door mooie natuur. Er zijn speeltuinen, een strandje en een kinderboerderij. Vanuit het bos heb je prachtig uitzicht op de skyline van Rotterdam!

HET PARK

Het bekendste park van Rotterdam bij de Euromast. Het park is rond 1850 ontworpen door de bekende Haarlemse landschapsarchitecten vader en zoon Zochers. Het is een fijne plek om je even terug te trekken uit de drukte van de stad.

DE ROTTE

Vanuit de stad stroomt de rivier de Rotte kronkelend naar het achterland. Idaal voor een leuke fietstocht langs molens, strandjes en mooie natuur. Startpunt Bergse Linker Rottekade (North).

through beautiful scenery including playgrounds, a petting zoo and a small beach. From the forest you have beautiful views of the city's skyline!

THE PARK

The most famous park of Rotterdam at the Euromast. The park was designed around 1850 by the famous Haarlem landscape architects father and son Zochers. It is a nice place to retreat from the hustle and bustle of the city.

THE RIVER ROTTE

The river Rotte flows from the city to the hinterland and is ideal for a leisurely bicycle tour passed windmills, river beaches and beautiful nature. A good starting point is Bergse Linker Rottekade (North).

Dieser Wald ist eine grüne Oase am Rande der Stadt rund um den Kralinger See. Wanderwege führen durch wunderschöne Landschaften mit Spielplätzen, einem Streichelzoo und einem kleinen Strand. Vom Wald aus haben Sie einen schönen Blick auf die Skyline von Rotterdam!

SCHOUWBURGPLEIN Vlakbij het Centraal Station, achter het Weena, ligt het autovrije Schouwburgplein met een grote bioscoop, de Schouwburg en concertgebouw De Doelen. NOORD & ZWAANSHALS

Het is leuk wandelen langs de Rotte via de Zaagmolenkade en elke zaterdag is er een gezellige biologische markt op het Noordplein.

The Zwaanshals and the nearby Zaagmolenkade are up and coming shopping streets in the northern district. There are many nice restaurants and great vintage shops like Jouw Marktkraam en Showroom41. It's a nice walk along the Rotte via the Zaagmolenkade. Every Saturday there is an organic market on the Noordplein with local farmers.

The Art Nouveau White House dates back to 1897. It is 43 meters high, has 11 floors and an elevator which was very modern at the time. It was built after the example of American skyscrapers. At the time it was the tallest office building in Europe. Sceptics claimed the soft soil of Rotterdam would not be able to support the building and so 1000 piles were driven into the ground. ZUID & KATENDRECHT Achter Hotel New York, ligt een loopbrug naar Katendrecht. Hier vind je de gezellige Fenix Food Loods met een ambachtelijk versmarkt en voormalig cruiseship ss Rotterdam. Het Deliplein is een nieuwe hotspot. Vroeger stond deze wijk bekend als hoerenbuurt, nu vind je er leuke horeca zoals Locale Kaap (vis en veggies) and Thais restaurant Delibird. In de zomer zijn er leuke festivals zoals Nacht van de Kaap en Jazz op de Kaap en op vrijdag is er een kleine markt.

Behind Hotel New York, there is a footbridge to Katendrecht. In this district you will find the Fenix Food Loods with a traditional food market and former cruiseship ss Rotterdam. A very important word in Dutch language! It can be translated as yummy and can be used for just about anything: a meal can be lekker, a feeling can be lekker, a person can be lekker. For example: een lekker broodje is a tasty sandwich; een lekker ding is a hottie and slaap lekker means sleep tight.

Orange is the color of the Royal Dutch Family. Members are called van Oranje (of Orange), a title of nobility. The House of Orange-Nassau (van Oranje-Nassau) has played a central role in Dutch politics since William I of Orange (Willem van Oranje) organized the revolt against the Spanish rule, which after eighty years of war led to our independence.

DUTCH!? In old English Dutch simply meant people or nation. In the early 1500s the Netherlands and Germany (Deutschland) were all part of the Holy Roman Empire, and referred to by the English as ‘Dutch’. That English custom is still in use.

ERASMUS: THE MOST FAMOUS MAN OF ROTTERDAM De in Rotterdam geboren Erasmus (1466-1536) was de eerste bestseller auteur van Europa! Zijn Adagia, een verzameling Griekse en Romeinse gezegden was ongekend populair net als zijn Lof der Zotheid, waarin hij theologen, vorsten en de Kerk kritisch op de hak nam. Eramus’ levenswerk was zijn verbeterde versie van de Bijbel waarvoor hij op zoek ging naar oorspronkelijke, Griekse bronteksten en de officiele Latijnse Vulgaat-vertaling controleerde op fouten en slordigheden. Erasmus spoorde lezers aan om kritisch en onderzoekend te lezen. Zijn wetenschappelijke kijk op tekst en religie en zijn pleidooi voor tolerantie en humanisme vormen nog altijd een belangrijke basis van onze samenleving. Erasmus ondertekende zijn schrijfsels met Erasmus Roterodamus (Erasmus van Rotterdam) en zette zo Rotterdam op de wereldkaart. Erasmus is nog steeds een icoon van de stad. Onze universiteit, ziekenhuis en brug zijn naar hem vernoemd en de bibliotheek bevat ruim 3.000 originele publicaties.

Rotterdam-born Erasmus (1466-1536) was the first bestselling author in Europe! His Adagia, a collection of Greek and Roman proverbs, was extremely popular, as was his Praise of Folly, in which he critically ridiculed theologians, monarchs and the Church. Erasmus's life's work was his improved version of the Bible, for which he searched for original Greek source texts and checked the Latin Vulgate translation for errors and inaccuracies. Erasmus urged his readers to always read critically and inquiringly. His scientific view of text and religion and his plea for tolerance and humanism still form an important basis of our society. Erasmus signed his writings with Erasmus Roterodamus (Erasmus of Rotterdam) and thus put Rotterdam on the world map. Erasmus is still an icon of the city. Our university, hospital and bridge are named after him and the library contains more than 3,000 original publications.

ERASMUS IN THE CITY The statue of Erasmus next to the Laurenskerk is the oldest public statue in the Netherlands. The statue has a long history and was first made in 1549, 13 years after Erasmus's death. During Spanish occupation it was thrown into the canal. It was replaced by a wooden statue which was later executed in stone. In 1622 the stone statue was replaced by bronze by sculptor Hendrick de Keyser.

ERASMUS WALK A great way to learn more about Erasmus and his legacy is the Erasmus Walk. This walk takes you past various Erasmusmemorials in the citycenter and provides interesting ins and outs about the life and works of Erasmus. A must walk for lovers of history!
