Exact één jaar geleden publiceerden we de eerste editie van het Equ.Lifestyle magazine. Vandaag blikken we tevreden terug op de evolutie die we hebben gemaakt en kijken we uit naar de spannende veranderingen, interviews, shoots, enz. die we jullie nog zullen mogen brengen. Samen met Equ.News proberen we iedereen in de sport bij elkaar te brengen, onafhankelijk van discipline of niveau. The Meulendijks sisters A taste for fashion in Dressage...
Lotte en Anne Meulendijks, ze zijn ondertussen bekende namen in de wereld van de dressuur. Hoog tijd dus voor Equ.Lifestyle om deze Nederlandse klassedames op te zoeken en met hen te praten over hun ‘style’, hun kleding thuis, in hun vrije tijd en bij competities.
The Sisters Meulendijks, have made their name in the dressage world. Both Lotte and Anne are celebrated young dressage riders. Time for our team of Equ.Lifestyle to contact these ladies at their home, discovering their ‘style’.
Op wedstrijd springen ze allebei in het oog. Dat heeft vanzelfsprekend te maken met de mooie resultaten die ze neerzetten met hun toppaarden MDH Avanti, MDH Ohio, Welt Hit en anderen. Maar ook hun kledingstijl is opvallend : chique, verzorgd, hip maar nooit ‘over the top’. Het typeert de zusjes Meulendijk ten voeten uit, hoorden we tijdens Indoor Brabant.
At the showground both Lotte and Anne do catch the eye. Not only their competition results with MDH Avanti, MDH Ohio and Welt Hit make them notice. They express class while being ‘in’. It is a typical Meulendijk fashion.

Geen bling bling voor ons. Op stal en met de paarden in de buurt moet het functioneel zijn. Precies daar zitten we helemaal op dezelfde golflengte van onze sponsor die ons van top tot teen aankleedt.” “Het klikt helemaal want bij onze sponsor staan kwaliteit en functionaliteit voorop. Het merk voelt meteen goed en straalt bovendien luxe en comfort uit. Een stijlvol merk waarmee je toch ook in de kijker loopt. Echt een merk voor ons.”, lachen ze allebei. Het is een trend in de dressuur om met bonte setjes voor de dag te komen maar dat is niet direct besteed aan Lotte en Anne. Op wedstrijd trekken ze graag de lijn van chique-hip door. Geen fashion items dus, niet voor de ruiter, niet voor het paard.
“Ja we zijn amazones, maar blijven wel graag meisje-meisje. Alles heeft zijn tijd...”

“We’re very happy with our fashion sponsor. The brand offers both casual as well as competition outfits. But what is more important is they give us our freedom to pick out our own clothes.” “On the showground we opt for neutral colours. Despite we like to bring some excitement in our wardrobe as well. Adding some fancy summer colours for example. We don’t like the ‘bling bling’. Everything needs to be functional as well as nice. That is also why we like the taste of our sponsor.
Met al die bonte kleuren en steentjes hebben de sportieve dames niets. Het paard, zeggen ze met overtuiging, is de acteur en mag dus ook de blikvanger zijn. “Zeker bij Avanti kan ik het niet te bont maken,dat ziet er dan echt niet uit, en dus houden we het heel neutraal”, horen we van Anne. Ook voor de caps is het niet anders. Zwarte caps voor thuis en liefst een neutrale kleur op concours, al kunnen hier wel wat steentjes. Belangrijker is de pasvorm. De cap moet goed zitten, goed aansluiten en bij de vorm van het hoofd passen. Daar wordt zorg van gemaakt maar voorop staat immer en altijd de veiligheid. Dat vinden de dames alleen maar vanzelfsprekend. In hun vrije tijd en ook als ze al eens een stapje in de wereld zetten willen Lotte en Anne wel eens uitpakken. Anne waagt
“Quality and functionality are two key words in what we like to describe our style. The brand we wear is feeling comfortable and easy to wear. Really made to fit us,” state the sisters simultaniously. We like to express ourselves with casual yet classy clothers. The chique-hip is not for us nor our horses. Nevertheless the horse can always be dressed a bit more, be pimped up if you want. He/she is the one in the spotlights. “I don’t like to use the bont in our horse materials. Certainly not with Avanti. That looks just awfull when I use that,” explains Anne. Also the helmets stay neutral. At home the ladies wear a black cap. At the showground the helmets remained neutral but there are some little gems (swarovski) added. “Also for a helmet the functionality and comfort are priority. Those secure your safety and that is what a helmet is designed for.” Apart from the show ring the sisters enjoy going out. “Although I might be a bit more timide as Anne, “ explains Lotte. “I enjoy adding some colour to 19

“Clothes need to be fitting, and comfortable. We don’t like bling bling, nevertheless we do admire some colour” zich al eens aan een experimentje terwijl Lotte liever op veiligheid speelt, ook qua kleuren. Maar uitstraling hebben ze wel allebei. “Misschien ben ik een tikje minder uitbundig dan Anne, maar dat betekent nog niet dat ik alleen maar zwart en blauw in de kast heb hangen”, klinkt het bij Lotte. Waarop Anne: “We volgen allebei graag de mode, dat is leuk, maar daar zijn we nu ook niet elke dag mee bezig.” Als de dames uitgaan dragen ze graag een rok of, bij een feestelijke gelegenheid, een mooie galajurk. Hun instelling: wanneer je de hele dag in (rij)broek rondloopt dan wil je ’s avonds wel eens wat anders dragen, een andere kant van jezelf laten zien!

Een nieuw concept verovert de wereld van de fokkerij. De Young European Breeders organisatie is een nieuw Belgisch initiatief dat poogt jonge fokkers te verenigen en zo de kwaliteit verder uit te breiden.
A new concept is conquering the world of breeders. The Young European Breeders organisation is a new Belgian initiative aiming to connect and support young breeders.
Het nieuwe concept van Xavier Coninckx staat nog maar in de steigers maar kan nu al op heel wat positieve respons rekenen.

Y.E.B. wil zich profileren als de vereniging die zich inzet voor alle jonge fokkers van sportpaarden onder.
Y.E.B. wants to profile itself as an organisation that supports young breeders of sport horses.
De organisatie zal een ondersteunend orgaan worden via verschillende iniatieven.

“We zullen op verschillende manieren de jonge fokkers ondersteunen en verbinden met elkaar,” vertelt Xavier Coninckx.
“To start we will organise different breeding competitions for young breeder,” states Xavier Coninckx.
“Zo willen we kampioenschappen voor veulens en jonge paarden open voor alle Europese stamboeken organiseren. Dit zonder hieraan verbonden te zijn en hierdoor onoverkomelijk vooroordelen te handstaven.” “De evenementen moeten neutraal georganiseerd worden en een ideaal trainingsplatform voor de toppers van morgen aanbieden.” Maar het stopt niet bij het aanbieden van diversie trainingswedstrijden. Het Y.E.B. wil instaan voor een constante verbinding van jonge Europese fokker. “We zullen een magazine uitbrengen dat de meningen van jonge fokkers combineert met de nodige tips & tricks,” vertelt medeoprichter Dana De Beuckelaer. “We willen via een online en geprint platform verder gaan dan evenementen. Het Y.E.B. moet een service worden het onderste uit de kan te halen voor de jonge fokkers.”. Stichters zijn Xavier Coninckx, zijn verloofde Dana De Beuckelaer-Dournez en Mitch Van Loo. Gedreven en gemotiveerd door hun eerste ervaringen in de fokkerij willen zij anderen helpen groeien met hun fokkerij.

The Y.E.B. will put his best to support breeders in many different ways. “Apart from the championships we will publish a magazine that offers opinions, tips & tricks of young breeders one to another,” explains Dana De Beuckelaer. “Through this printed and an online platform we’d like to connect young breeders with each other. The Y.E.B. will have to become a service platform that creates a perfect base for all breeders under 45 years old.” Founders are Xavier Coninckx, his fiancé Dana De Beucelaer-Dournez and Mitch Van Loo. All three started the idea while have experienced their first successes as young breeders.

De Belgische parcoursbouwer Luc Musette, zit gelijmd aan zijn computer wanneer we hem ontmoeten tijdens de Longines Global Champions Tour in Monte Carlo. Op zijn bureau in de jury box overschouwt Musette de piste aan de Monacese haven, alsook de immense yachten. Met slechts enkele uren te gaan voor de vijfsterren concours van start gaan maakt Musette even tijd om samen met ons te praten over zijn 32 jaar ervaring. “Ik start met een blanco papier. Soms vraagt het uittekenen van een parcours maar vijf minuten, soms vraagt het drie tot vier dagen,” verklaart Musette. “Voor mij is geen enkel parcours identiek. Ik teken op basis van de piste”. Heel wat factoren spelen een rol volgens de ervaren parcoursbouwer. “Overdag moet je rekening houden met de stand van de zon. Ook de omgeving is van belang. Hier in Monte-Carlo is er heel wat media aandacht. Daarbij moet elke sponsor zijn sprong perfect in beeld zien. Hierdoor dien ik rekening te houden met de koninklijke berg aan de achterzijde en de reflectie van de zon op het water van de haven.” Luc Musette is één van de meest gevraagde parcoursbouwers in de wereld. De afgelopen vijf jaar is hij een vast onderdeel van de Longines Global Champions Tour. Decennia heeft de parcoursbouwer er zijn levenswerk van gemaakt het publiek te laten daveren en de ruiters een gezonde portie uitdaging voor te schotelen. Zo is onder andere de Amerikaanse Reed Kessler één van zijn fans. Kessler noemt Musette’s parcours “subliem”. Hoewel de paarden en ruiters de spotlights wegstelen tijdens het evenement beseft iedereen dat er geen spanning of topsport zou zijn zonder de parcours. Voor Musette is dit ook van belang. “Ik denk alles uit. Er moet een verhaal in mijn parcours zijn, een spektakel, een mise-enscène.” Musette is zelf geen fan van te technisch en moeilijke parcours. “Ten eerste vind ik dat een parcours fair moet zijn voor het paard. Elke viervoeter moet zichzelf kunnen uiten in mijn parcours. De paarden moeten hun kwaliteiten kunnen tonen. Elke parcours moet harmonieus zijn maar met enkele addertjes onder het gras. Indien je die addertjes weet te overbruggen, dan finish je foutloos. Dat is volgens mij ook m’n sterkte.” Luc Musette komt UIT paardenfamilie van vijf generaties en is de broer van Jean-Paul Musette, voormalig chef d’Equipe van België. “Hoewel ik uit een rasechte paardenfamilie kom was m’n carrière in de sport niet vooraf gepland. Ik reed heel wat toen ik jonger was en door m’n nauwe band met de sport ben ik uiteindelijk bij deze job beland.”

Luc Musette is glued to his laptop when we arrive at the glitzy Port d’Hercule in Monte Carlo to meet the course designer par excellence. From his desk in the judges’ office – overlooking the arena of the Longines Global Champions Tour and the house-sized yachts lined up in the harbour – Musette is busy putting the finishing touches to the evening’s Grand Prix du Prince de Monaco. Earlier in the morning, he had been told that one of the key sponsor jumps needed to be moved because of TV camera angles, so it was goodbye to his carefully mapped out original design and back to the drawing board for the Belgian designer. With only a few hours to go before the prestigious CSI5*, it’s clearly one of those moments where 32 years of course building experience comes in quite handy. “I have a white piece of paper with nothing on it – and then I start. Sometimes it’s easy and it’ll take five minutes. Sometimes it’s more difficult and it’s three or four days,” Luc Musette says of his design process, flashing a smile. We’re sitting in the cool shade of the VIP area, and if Musette was feeling the pressure moments earlier, he’s now the picture of relaxed cool. “For me, course building is never repetitive. I draw a lot of inspiration from the size and location of the venue. During the day you have to be careful and think about the position of the sun. And here,” he says, gesturing out across the compact arena nestled tightly between the majestic backdrop of the palace-filled mountainside and the glittering harbour, “the venue is really small, so my options are a bit limited. I have to compose with a small ring in mind and really think about how the lights are positioned this evening when it gets dark.” As one of the world’s most sought-after course builders and a key part of the Longines Global Champions Tour for the past five years, Musette has spent decades working at the pinnacle of the

Het bood genoeg spanning en met slechts vier combinaties in de barrage was het parcours echt vanuit horsemanship ontworpen. De paarden hadden elke gelegenheid hun kwaliteiten te tonen zonder hun eigen limiet voorbij te springen.,” verklaart Musette. “ Je moet steeds rekening houden met de paarden. Elke week zijn ze opnieuw aan het werk. Als je een zware oxer bouwt zullen er heel wat fouten gemaakt worden. Maar dat is niet waar ik naar streef. Ik zoek steeds naar de balans tussen respect en harmonie.” Luc heeft het genoegen de wereldtop aan het werk te zien en meer nog, zijn werk te interpreteren. Logisch dat hij een favoriet heeft, denken we dan? “Edwina Tops-Alexander, Ian Miller maar het meest kijk ik op naar Nick Skelton. Zeker in combinatie met Big Star. Voor mij is deze combinatie wereldniveau alleen al gebaseerd op de technische graad die het duo aankan. Het duo is fantastisch. Nick heeft een perfecte ruiters attitude en hij weet een paard echt op te waarderen.”

Young talent and US National Champion Reed Kessler is one of his many fans: she calls his courses “outstanding”. While horses and riders may be the ones to steal the spotlight in terms of glamour and exposure, the sport would be pretty much non-existent if not for clever course designers like Luc Musette who consistently dreams up exhilarating new tests. “I build a complete story, a spectacle, a mise-enscène,” Musette says of his role. “I not only have to build a course for the riders and horses, but also a show for the public and the guests.” Known for technically challenging but very natural courses, Musette is not a fan of overly complex tests. “First of all, a course needs to be fair for the horse. One of my main goals is that the horse is able to really express itself and showcase its skills, potential and qualities. The course has to be harmonious but with some tricky spots. That’s sort of my speciality. And if you can manage the tricky spots, then you’re clear.” As the fifth generation of a horse-mad family and the brother of Jean-Paul Musette, the retired national show jumping chef

Toeval wil dat Nick Skelton ook een fan is van Luc Musette. “Luc is één van de beste parcoursbouwers in de wereld. Het is een getalenteerd man die op een paardvriendelijke manier een technisch parcours kan uittekenen.,” verklaart Skelton. “Je kan hem steeds aanspreken, nog een pluspunt!” Voor ruiters is het niet ongebruikelijk dat ze de parcoursbouwer aanspreken voor aanvang van de proef. “Vaak vragen ze me wat meer info betreffende de afstand, of de tijd kort staat, hoe ze de tijd zullen meten, enz. De moeilijkheid bij elk gesprek is neutraal te blijven. Je mag de ene ruiter niet meer info geven als de andere.” Als afsluiter nog even het nuttig advies van ‘s werelds nummer één parcoursbouwer: “Hou het simpel. Bevraag jezelf steeds. Het is nooit een job, wel een hobby,” verklaart Musette. Kijk nu even hier in Monte-Carlo, een zuiderse goddelijke plaats. Wie droomt daar niet van?

d’Equipe for Belgium, Musette says his career choice was a happy accident. “I wouldn’t say it was planned, but I used to ride a lot when I was younger and I was always involved in the sport, so it was circumstance really that brought me to the job.” From all his courses, is there one that stands out as The One? “The €1 million Grand Prix in Rio last year,” he says, referring to the Athina Onassis Horse Show in Rio de Janeiro, which was won by Olympic individual gold winner Steve Guerdat. “I was really proud of that. It was very suspenseful with only four in the jump-off. It was horsemanship course designing. The horses could express themselves without pushing beyond their limits. You have to be really respectful of the horses. They’re out at

the shows every weekend. If you put a really high and wide jump, for sure there are going to be mistakes on that. But that’s not what I’m looking for. I’m looking for something respectful and harmonious. It was only a 1.45 metre course, but the technical part was difficult.” Watching the world’s top riders interpret his work at all the biggest international events, does he have any favourites? Musette has high praise for Edwina Tops-Alexander and Ian Millar, but it is Olympic UK gold medallist Nick Skelton and Big Star that he rates as the most technically accomplished combination. “Big Star and Nick are fantastic. Nick has the perfect riding attitude and he’s an extraordinary horse builder.” As it turns out, Nick Skelton also happens to be quite the Luc Musette fan. “Luc is one of the best course builders in the world. He is very talented and gets good results with very fair and horsefriendly courses,” Skelton says, “and you can always talk to him.” It’s not uncommon for riders to talk to the course designer before riding a class. “It’s usually about the distance or – if the time is short – how they’re going to measure the time. But I always have to be careful that I’m not serving the interests of a specific rider,” Musette says, his eyes twinkling. Tonight’s Grand Prix course is sure to prompt a few questions during the course walk. “You have to give them one or two spots where they can win time, and that’s hard to do in a small venue like this, so I’m not setting a very short time,” Musette explains. So what advice does Musette have for aspiring course builders? “Keep it really simple. You always have to question yourself and put yourself in a position of wondering every single day.” For hard-working Musette, the next show is just around the corner. “For me, it’s not a job,” he muses. “Take this show in Monaco, for example. I’m here in this mythical place and it’s a little bit like a holiday. I’m always on the road, but it’s my passion. It really is my passion.” •

In het jaar 2005 werd in het Vlaams-Brabantse, Affligem de zoon van Balou du Rouet en Paprika van ‘t Steenputje geboren.
In the year 2005 a new star was born in the Flemish town, Affligem, nearby Brussels. A son of Balou du Rouet and Paprika van ‘t Steenputje.
Op de weides van Pierre Floru werd het veulen First Class Van Eeckelghem genaamd. Niemand kon dromen wat de hengst op latere leeftijd zou presteren.
On the fields of Pierre Floru the foal was named First Class Van Eeckelghem. No one could expect this stallion would become one of the top show jumping horses.
Sportief was First Class één van de beste paarden ter wereld. In 2016 haalde hij nog de negende plaats tijdens de Olympische Spelen in Rio de Janeiro met Daniel Deusser in het zadel. First Class nam deel aan ruim 141 internationale wedstrijden en sprong daarbij tweemaal naar de overwinning. Zo was er een overwinning weg gelegd voor de viervoeter tijdens de Nations Cup finale in Barcelona in 2016. Zonder twijfel is Stephex Stables’ First Class van Eeckelghem voortaan een groot gemis in onze sport.

First Class was one of the best horses in the world. In 2016 the chestnut competed to a ninth individual place at the Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games with Daniel Deusser in the saddle. In total First Class competed in over 141 international competitions and won two of them. Under the saddle of Daniel Deusser, First Class such won at the FEI Nations Cup finals in Barcelona. Without a doubt Stephex Stables’ First Class van Eeckelghem will be missed.

Hoefbeslag is essentieel voor de inzetbaarheid van het sportpaard. Waar in de natuur de hoef slijt door middel van het lopen over rotsachtige en harde grond hebben onze sportpaarden een ander ritme waardoor dit niet vanzelfsprekend is. Een goede smid kan een paard maken of breken. Want ook gezonde en sterke voeten hebben een goed beslag nodig om gezond en sterk te blijven.

Zorg ervoor dat veulens en jaarlingen ook goede hoefverzorging krijgen en bekapt worden. Want op jonge leeftijd kunnen “slechte voeten” nog op vrij simpele wijze gecorrigeerd worden. Als uw paard wat ouder is geworden wil dit niet meer. Dan is goed of orthopedisch beslag de enige oplossing. Juist sportpaarden zijn gebaat bij een goed beslag. Het juiste ijzer en correct beslag beschermt uw paard van onregelmatige slijtage en kan zo zelfs spier-, pees- of rugblessures voorkomen.

Based in Twente Johan has been passionate about horses and the profession of farrier since young age. “Unfortunately, you see a lot of horses with feed that are in bad shape. At lot of these horses will get special shoeing, but in most cases this is not necessary. Veurink’s passion for farrier comes from making the horses perform optimal.

De kunst van het beslaan en de hoefsmederij schuilt hem volgens Veurink in passie voor de paarden. Als je goed kijkt hoe de houding van het paard en de voetstand is kan je veel al corrigeren door correct beslag. “Voor mij is het een uitdaging om elk paard op het perfecte beslag te zetten zodat ze optimaal kunnen presteren. Het is van belang dat ze recht staan en vlak landen bij het lopen. Verder moeten ze, zoals vaak in een mooie term aangegeven wordt, mooi kunnen rollen. En juist deze soepele beweging valt of staat met een mooie vlakke voet waar het paard solide en comfortabel op staat.” Goed beslag is dus de basis! Mocht er dan toch een blessure ontstaan kan orthopedisch beslag zeker een uitkomst bieden in het herstel. Als eigenaar moeten we realiseren dat hoefverzorging ook belangrijk is. Zo kan honing een uitkomst bieden bij paarden met een losse wand, kunnen we te natte zachte voeten interen en is het regelmatig in-oliën van de hoeven belangrijk om ze soepel te houden.

It’s a playground for young and old.
Knokke Hippique was dit jaar niet aan zijn proefstuk toe. Het leek iets rustiger te zijn als de jaren vooraf, maar daarom was er nog niet minder aandacht besteed aan het concours zelf! Opnieuw waren de details zoals het hoort in orde en werd er extra aandacht aan de paarden gegeven.
The international horses show in Knokke, Knokke Hippique was ready for its third edition. Although it seemed there were less visitors, or the terrain more open all details were like they should be. WHat was definitely a plus is the extra attention for the horses well being.

Het CHIO in Rotterdam is zonder twijfel één van die evenementen in Europa waar de sport zonder meer primeert. Springsport en dressuur gaan er hand in hand. Alle disciplines worden er gelijkwaardig behandeld en tussendoor is er op het centrale plein tijd om even gezellig na te keuvelen.
The CHIO in Rotterdam is probably one of those events where horse sport is just the only thing that matters. Show jumping and dressage are organised symbiotically. Alle disciplines are equal at the Dutch show ground. In between classes there is plenty of time to have a nice chat with the riders and spectators.

Toch een spijtige zaak dat ongeveer 50% van het terrein, restricted area is, een klein minpuntje aan een spetterend event.
The Global Champions Tour in Madrid offers top sport on one of the most exclusieve grass arena’s in the world. Organised by Oxer Sport it is an event to admire. Unfortunate that about 50% of the terrein is restricted area, something that does diminish its glamour, just a bit.

Het lijkt alsof Land Rover haar echte merkwaarden uit het oog is verloren. De nadruk van nieuwe modellen lag voornamelijk op luxe en comfort, waarbij de terreinwaardigheid op een zijspoor is beland. Toch is er de good old Discovery. Land Rover introduceert nu de vijfde generatie van dit model en op het eerste oog heeft de auto veel weg van de topmodellen: de Range Rovers. In deze test blijkt of de Discovery toch de USP’s van de Britten kan verdedigen. Zichtbare familieband Voor de looks van de topmodellen uit het gamma hoeft de nieuwe Discovery zich allerminst te schamen. In het bijzonder de grille en de vorm van de koplampen en achterlichten doen denken aan zijn grotere – en vooral duurdere – broers. Bijzonder is de vorm van de achterklep. Hiermee is subtiel een verwijzing gemaakt naar het sterk a-symmetrisch ontwerp van zijn voorgangers. Op de flanken valt op dat het kenmerkend design-trucje van het hoge dak ook op de nieuwste generatie een plaats heeft gevonden. Het totaalplaatje maakt niet op iedereen dezelfde indruk, waarbij vooral de vormgeving rond het achterwiel wat minder prettig op het netvlies ligt.

In addition, the car has large, comfortable front seats. On long journeys, they give you a good support, thanks to the many adjustment options. Dit is tevens prettig voor de twee extra inzittenden die op de – uit de vloer van de bagageruimte – uitklapbare stoelen kunnen plaatsnemen. Nadat je met de nodige lenigheid de stoelen hebt bereikt, concludeer je dat deze enkel bedoeld zijn voor korte ritjes of enkel voor kleine kinderen.
