Voor deze speciale editie, waarvan de release op Jumping Antwerpen zal plaats vinden, hebben wij mogen rekenen op vele van onze partners. Partners waarmee we de laatste jaren een band hebben opgebouwd en waar we trots op zijn. Het mag dan ook als aan paal boven water staan dat de Hippische sport verbindt. Dankzij onze prachtige sport, waar we het geluk hebben om elke dag met geweldige viervoeters en mensen te mogen samenwerken, ontstaan vele solide partnerships. Dat is de kern en motor van onze sport waar we onze toekomst op kunnen bouwen. Maar we mogen niet enkel van samenwerkingen spreken. Onze sport gaat gepaard met moed, passie en liefde! Dagelijks zijn we bezig met management, liefhebben en het zorgen voor onze paarden. Het is een echte stijl van leven waarbij vrienden voor het leven gemaakt worden. Vrienden waar we altijd op terug kunnen vallen. En dat is misschien wel het meest waardevolle wat we uit onze sport oplevert.

Ik Hou van Je “Mooier dan onze sport is er geen. De schoonheid reikt veel verder dan een geslaagde sprong over een monumentale hindernis. Respect en vertrouwen, daar draait het om. Paarden houden van mensen, met heel hun hart en ze accentueren dat met hun koninklijk hoofd. En toch zijn ze allemaal zo anders, zo verschillend. Dat maakt onze wereld zo fascinerend. Dat wij mogen omgaan met die karakters, die temperamenten, traag of heftig, dat is een onnoemlijk voorrecht. Voor je geduld en je drang om ze te doorgronden en te begrijpen krijg je zoveel terug. Het paard is nooit van jou, het is wel helemaal bij jou”. Ooit noteerde ik deze warme woorden uit de mond van Edwina Alexander, wellicht een van de beste vrouwelijke jumpingruiters ter wereld. Ze staat gelukkig niet alleen in haar oprechte liefde voor paarden. Luister maar : “ Nachten heb ik wakker gelegen, denkend aan hem. Hij zag me echt graag. Dat weet ik wel zeker. Als ik bij hem in de stal was, was hij goedgehumeurd en stond hij rustig te genieten. Onze gevoelens waren wederkerig. Ik heb hem al maanden niet meer gezien maar er gaat geen dag voorbij of ik denk aan hem. Als dat flauw klinkt, dan is dat maar zo”.

“There is no sport more beautiful as ours. The beauty is more than just a clear jump. It is respect and confidence between the horse and rider. Horses sincerely love people. They all mark that love but are still different from each other. That is what makes our world so beautiful. The fact we have the honour to work with those majestic creatures, those tempers, slow or powerful, it is a privilege. The horse is never from you, but it is completely with you.” Once I note those words of Edwina Alexander, probably one of the best female show jumping riders in the world. Luckily she is not alone in this sincere love for horses. Listen: “Nights I couldn’t sleep, thinking of him. He really loved me. He was merry when I was at the stable, enjoying my presence. Our feelings were mutual. I haven’t seen him for months, but there’s not a single day I’m thinking of him. If that sounds silly, then so be it.” A simple declaration of love with power. Also a divorce, leaving marks. Dirk Demeersman after his parting of Clinton, a true star. Also a charmer, with his beautiful white manes, sensual tail and muscular body that flawlessly bent over the fences. Through gratitude, trust, respect for ‘Love’, ‘‘Love, it’s often nothing special, it’s not a miracle, but no man can do without, I hear a troubadour of the past. A rider who declares his love for a horse, it exists. Existence in the silence of a stable. In riding school ‘silent sorrow’. We know it from the child stories of Anna Sewell. Horse abused, adopted, cuddled, loved. A familiar scenario. As referenced in ‘My little pony’ or ‘Young black stallion’. But a (top) rider, a man who earned his stripes in a career facing the biggest obstacles, a tough guy, molded out of Flemish clay, who unabashedly lets his emotions free, it is refreshing. I know riders from their quotes honouring their horses. They speak of their ‘jumping gods’, of power and explosiveness. Sometimes they speak of exclusive material. It will be good and fair but ‘I love him?’ I just wanted to say, I love the sentiment in the equestrian sport; Stallions are praised for their breeding performances, their wonderful sperm, their prestigious results. Mares are named a ‘star’ for their beauty and gracious body. We are creative with our superlatives to praise a horse and commercialize. But who ever says, like to his loved ones, I love you? Just sometimes the miracle happens. I know there are multiple ways to pet: I love you, Lover, April Love, You only, Venus, Eros, Fleur d’Amor, Diva Royal, Pretty Darling but good old Shakespeare knew it all: “What’s in a name ?” There’s so much more as a beautiful name, Or not?

Langs wegen van dankbaarheid, vertrouwen, respect naar ‘houden van’. Houden van, ’t is vaak niets bijzonders, ’t is vaak niet zo’n wonder, maar geen mens die zonder kan, hoor ik een baardige troubadour uit vervlogen dagen zingen. Een ruiter die zijn liefde verklaart voor een paard, het bestaat. Het bestaat in de stilte van een stal. In manege ‘Stil Verdriet’. We kennen het natuurlijk ook uit de kinderlijke verhalen van Anna Sewell. Paard mishandeld, geadopteerd, geknuffeld, graag gezien. Het bekende scenario. Zoals ook in ‘My little pony’ of ‘Young black stallion’. Dat allemaal wel dus. Maar een topruiter, een man die ruim zijn sporen heeft verdiend in een leven over hoge balken en brede sloten, een stoere bink, geboetseerd uit Vlaamse klei, die ongegeneerd zijn amoureuze gevoelens vrij baan geeft, het is verademend en verheugend. Ik ken ruiters van hun uitspraken die overlopen van bewondering en nauwelijks verholen trots. Ze hebben het over hun ‘springkanon’, over kracht en vermogen, explosiviteit. Soms zelfs over hun uitzonderlijk ‘materiaal’. ’t Zal wel goed en juist zijn maar gewoon ‘ik zie hem graag’? Ik wou maar zeggen, ik hou van dat sentiment in de ruitersport. Hengsten worden geloofd om hun viriele fokprestaties, hun wonderlijk sperma, hun prestigieuze overwinningen. Merries krijgen het predicaat ‘ster’ voor hun onvolprezen schoonheid en hun sierlijke bouw. We vinden ze wel uit, de superlatieven om een paard de hemel in te prijzen en de markt in te hijsen. Maar wie zegt ooit, als tegen zijn geliefde, ik hou van je? Ja, soms, heel soms, gebeurt het wonder. Ik weet het, er wordt kwistig met strelende namen gestrooid : I love you, Lover, April Love, You only, Venus, Eros, Fleur d’Amour, Diva Royal, Pretty Darling maar good old Shakespeare wist het al : “what’s in a name?” Er is zoveel meer dan een mooie naam. Of niet soms?

De Jeugd, Business & Paardensport Een gesprek met Charlotte en Ines Van den Bosch

Youth, combining Business & horses An interview with Charlotte and Ines Van den Bosch

Ze zijn vast en zeker niet onbekend in de jumpingsport, de familie Van den Bosch. Zoon Michael behaalde als lid van het landenteam goud op het Europees kampioenschap in 2015. Ook de andere tak van de familie is nog steeds actief in de paardensport. Paul Van den Bosch is op het internationale toneel een beetje naar de achtergrond verdwenen maar ook hij is nog regelmatig in het zadel terug te vinden net als zijn dochter Charlotte. Evelien was vroeger actief op 1,40m niveau maar besloot bij aanvang van haar studies de handdoek in de ring te gooien. Wij spraken met InĂ¨s en Charlotte over hoe zij erin slagen hun liefde voor de sport met een bloeiende zaak te combineren.

The Van den Bosch Family are familiar faces in the international equestrian show jumping community. Son Michael jumped to the team gold medal at the 2015 FEI European Championships. The other side of the family is focused on the breeding sport thanks to Paul Van den Bosch. While Paul’s daughter, Charlotte is happy riding the horses at home, Ines is focusing on her international career, thus follows the footsteps of her brother and sister Evelien, who competed at an international 1.40m level. The family combines a trending furniture business with an active equestrian career, time to talk with Ines and Charlotte. Iedereen kent jullie voornamelijk als ruiter op verschillende concours en we vergeten wel eens dat jullie ook werken in het familiebedrijf. Kunnen jullie ons wat meer over dit bedrijf vertellen?

Inès: Habufa is een echt familiebedrijf. Onze grootvader kwam op het idee om een meubelbedrijf op te starten met als naam Hapertse Buismeubelen Fabriek. Het bedrijf is dan later overgenomen door onze ouders en nu worden wij voorbereid om de fakkel over te nemen. Mijn vader (Danny) houdt zich voornamelijk bezig met het ontwerpen en het creatieve van het verhaal. Hij focust zich ook op de verschillende concepten. Charlotte: Mijn vader (Paul) neemt voornamelijk de algemene directie op zich. 18

You are both well known at the horse shows but most people forget both of you are working hard in the family business. What’s your daily occupation? Ines: Habufa is a real family business. Our grandfather founded the furniture business names as “Hapertse Buismeubelen Fabriek.” Later our parents (Danny and Paul) took over the daily management, while we are now preparing to carry the torch. My father (Danny) is the creative mind of Habufa. He designs the furniture with his team and focuses on the different concepts of the company.

Wat onderscheidt Habufa van andere meubelbedrijven zoals bijvoorbeeld Ikea?

Charlotte: Ik denk dat ons bedrijf uniek is omdat Habufa drie verschillende lijnen heeft die zich elk toespitsen op een ander doelpubliek. De H&H lijn is het topsegment. Deze lijn is voornamelijk bedoeld voor mensen die van luxe houden en ook willen dat hun meubels luxe uitstralen. De XOOON-lijn is dan weer een jeugdiger concept. Met deze lijn willen we inspelen op de vraag van klanten die van een jonge, hippe uitstraling houden. Deze meubels zijn over het algemeen ook goedkoper dan die uit de H&H lijn. Tot slot hebben we ook nog de COCO Maison-lijn waartoe de decoratie behoort. Deze lijn heeft ook als enige haar eigen webshop. InĂ¨s: Met die webshop zijn we pas begonnen. Het hele project staat nog in zijn kinderschoenen, maar de online-verkoop begint toch stilletjes op gang te komen. De laatste jaren heeft er zich een belangrijke evolutie voorgedaan, je ziet duidelijk dat de online-verkoop van

Charlotte: My father (Paul) is the current general director, he enjoys his time with the financial tasks and general management. What is the difference between Habufa and other furniture brands such as Ikea? Charlotte: In my opinion Habufa is unique. Our three sub brands make us unique, addressing its own different audience. The H&H is our high end brand. Henders & Hezel aims to service people who enjoy a bit more luxury. XOOON on the other hand was created for the youth. XOOON is trendy and young. The XOOON furniture is as well cheaper as those from Henders & Hezel. Our last sub brand is COCO Maison. COCO Maison is the future of home

Charlotte: Ik denk ook dat Habufa zo sterk is omdat je geen enkel ander bedrijf meer nodig hebt om je huis volledig in te richten. Wij garanderen klanten alles via ons kan gebeuren en dat wordt enorm op prijs gesteld. Daarnaast is kwaliteit voor ons enorm belangrijk. Onze productie gebeurt wel in Azië via outsourcing, maar ons kwaliteitsmanagement ziet hierop streng toe. Enkel op die manier kunnen we onze klanten altijd meubels van de hoogste kwaliteit garanderen. Kwaliteit is voor ons enorm belangrijk.

Ines: We actually just started with the webshop. Although the project just kicked-off the online sales are growing steady. I do believe online sales is a global trend that becomes more and more important. Charlotte: Maybe to add, but the power of Habufa is you actually don’t need any other company to furnice your house. Maybe we are advertising Habufa to much at this moment, but we actually guarantee our clients a full service. Further we emphasize on the quality of our products. Our production is based in Asia but our quality management is on the spot to control the quality.

Je moet je prioriteiten stellen, voor mij is dat het bedrijf

Hoe combineren jullie sport en business?

Charlotte: Ik denk dat aan beide kanten van de familie het best goed lukt om de paardensport met het bedrijf te combineren maar net als in het bedrijf zie je toch bij onze ouders ook in de paardensport een andere aanpak. Mijn vader focust zich vooral op jonge paarden, hij rijdt nog elke dag maar wedstrijden zijn bij hem eerder naar de achtergrond verdwenen. Inès: En dat is net wat mijn vader wel nog veel doet. Hij gaat nog vaak en graag op wedstrijd en houdt zich niet bezig met de ontwikkeling van jonge paarden. En hoe zit het met jullie? Hoe slagen jullie erin om die beide te combineren?

Inès: Mij lukt het best goed. Naast mijn werk op de finance afdeling van het bedrijf maak ik nog graag tijd voor een uitgebreid sportprogramma. Zo ben ik 20

How do you combine sport and business? Charlotte: I think both our families do a great job in combining our passions. It is actually funny both our parents take a different approach to the business as well as the horses. My father (Paul) mainly focuses on breeding and young horses. He still rides every day, but doesn’t compete anymore. Ines: … and that is actually what my father (Danny) loves. Our side of the family enjoys competing and not so much producing young horses.

ongeveer twee keer per week in de fitnesszaal terug te vinden en heb ik ook nog één keer per week training met de paarden. Beweging is erg belangrijk voor mij, ik zou niet zonder sport kunnen! Wat de paarden betreft ben ik erg blij dat ik op mijn groom kan rekenen. Hij wandelt de paarden en traint ze af en toe. Ik heb een goed team achter mij staan. Zonder hen zou de combinatie van werk en sport niet mogelijk zijn! Ik probeer wel zoveel mogelijk zelf te doen. Voor mij is het belangrijk dat ik dicht bij de paarden sta en dat kan enkel als je ook zelf met hen bezig bent. Charlotte: Ik probeer ook nog elke dag te rijden maar jammer genoeg lukt dat niet altijd. Momenteel ben ik ook geblesseerd, paardrijden zit er dus niet in . Ik hoop wel mij in de toekomst terug de kunnen focussen op mijn sportieve ontwikkeling. Ook ik kan altijd rekenen op mijn trainer en een fantastisch team achter mij.

And how about you? How do you manage to combine business with horses? Ines: Thanks to a good time management I can actually manage my two passions. Besides my work at Finance I enjoy doing sports. At least twice a week I am at the fitness and once a week I train my horses. Being in motion is very important to me. Being totally honest, combining horses and business is only manageable when you follow a tight program and can count on a superb team. I am blessed with my groom who takes care of the horses, walks them and even sometimes trains them. Nevertheless I try to be involved in all parts of the process. Charlotte: Unfortunately I don’t manage to ride my horses every day. At the moment I am also injured, which actually ‘eliminates’ the horses at the moment. I do hope to be able to ride again soon and focus on my own sportive development. In any case I am also blessed to have a great team supporting me. We run our own stable at home, therefor I can count on all the riders, grooms, etc. When they are around. However it is important to make enough time to spoil and pet your horse as well. This provides a lot of relaxation after a busy day. But not only a perfect time management and team create a success formula to combine horses and business. You also have to set your priorities. For me the company is my number one priority.

We hebben thuis een hele stal en dat zorgt er natuurlijk voor dat ik op drukkere momenten enorm veel steun heb. Ik probeer zoveel mogelijk tijd voor de paarden vrij te maken. Je moet natuurlijk ook je prioriteiten stellen en voor mij komt het bedrijf momenteel op de eerste plaats. Wat spreekt jullie zo aan in de paardensport? Wat maakt deze sport zo speciaal voor jullie?

Inès: Het allerleukste aan deze sport is dat de jumpingwereld eigenlijk één grote vriendenkring is. Dit motiveert mij ook enorm. Het is fijn om elk weekend met je beste vriendin aan dezelfde wedstrijden deel te nemen. Ook het feit dat iedereen paardrijdt, schept sowieso al een speciale band. Charlotte: Ja, dat is ook zo. Veel van mijn vrienden en vriendinnen zijn ook actief in de paardensport en dat maakt het extra boeiend en plezant. Wat zijn jullie sportieve doelen voor dit jaar?

Charlotte: Ik heb mijzelf geen specifieke doelen voor dit seizoen gesteld. Het belangrijkste is dat ik bij de paarden kan zijn. Of ik dan op regionaal, nationaal of internationaal niveau spring, maakt weinig uit. Inès: Ik hoop dit jaar opnieuw deel te nemen aan Jumping Antwerpen en ik hoop ook in St.-Tropez aan de start te komen. Vorig seizoen maakte ik mijn debuut op 2-sterrenniveau en dat smaakt naar meer!

Why do you love show jumping sport? Ines: The funniest about our sport is the real friendship between everybody. The fact everybody are friends motivates to put your passion in it. Met dit jaar 9 internationale en meer dan 80 nationale springwedstrijden op het programma is het Equestrian Centre de Peelbergen, in het kort het ECdP, niet meer weg te denken van de kalender van vele springruiters. Naast dat het centrum door de weeks voor eenieder open is voor training biedt het complex sinds april 2017 ook de faciliteiten voor internationale eventing- en menwedstrijden. Reden voor Equ.Lifestyle om uit te zoeken wat er allemaal te doen is komend outdoorseizoen in Kronenberg. Sinds de laatste keer dat we op bezoek waren in Limburg is er een nieuw paviljoen herrezen, uitgestrekt over gehele lengte van de buitenpistes. Door de glazen wanden heeft men het panoramische uitzicht behouden en zijn er naast de vier Agterberg arena’s nu op het nieuwe Derby terrein ook 2 graspistes van 100 x 40 en 110 x 60 meter te zien. Daartussen zijn diverse vaste hindernissen voor het mennen en eventing, zoals een waterpartij aangelegd.

With 9 international and more than 80 national show jumping competitions Equestrian Centre de Peelbergen, or ECdP in short, is a frequently visited show site for many riders. Next to show jumping competitions and training shows during the week the five star equestrian accommodation will host its first international eventing and driving competitions starting in April this year. All together more than enough reasons for Equ.Lifestyle to have a look at everything that is going on during the outdoor season in Kronenberg, the Netherlands. The first thing we notice when we re-visit the equestrian centre in Limburg is the newly built pavilion that stretches over the full length in-between both the arena’s. The stunning building with glass walls gives visitors a panoramic view on the four sand arena’s with Agterberg footing, plus the two brand new grass arena’s on the adjoining Derby terrain. When inspecting the arena’s that measure 100x40 and 110x60 meters we see quite a few new obstacles and water features ready for the upcoming eventing and driving competitions.

De eerste twee weken van april ontving het ECdP ruiters uit alle hoeken van de wereld voor de CSI Spring Tour. In totaal kwamen er ruim duizend atleten van divers pluimage aan de start, waaronder een paar klinkende namen. Voordat zij afreisden naar de LGCT in Mexico brachten grootheden Scott Brash en Bertram Allen er een aantal van hun jonge toppaarden aan de start. “Dit is mijn eerste CSI hier, maar ik was al wel eens komen trainen. Ik heb al veel gezien in mijn carrière, maar dit vind je nergens anders. En ze blijven uitbreiden om steeds iets nieuws te kunnen bieden. Als je na gaat dat Scott Brash hier al voor de tweede keer speciaal voor naar Nederland komt, zegt dat eigenlijk al genoeg”, vertelt Bertram Allen na het winnen van een van de Longines Ranking proeven. Ook Belgisch topruiter Jérôme Guery is vol lof. “Ik wilde het hier na alle verhalen met eigen ogen zien. Men heeft niets teveel gezegd. Wat een topcentrum is hier gerealiseerd.”

World Championships

Wereldkampioenschappen Vorig jaar is men begonnen met de aanleg van nieuwe graspistes en diverse vaste hindernissen. Hierdoor kunnen niet alleen de men- en eventingruiters, maar ook de springruiters op gras rijden. Van 20 tot en met 23 april hebben de menners de primeur van de ingebruikname van dit Derby terrein. De enkel-, twee- en vierspannenwedstrijd is mooie generale repetitie voor het ECdP, daar het centrum in 2018 de Wereldkampioenschappen voor de enkelspan paard toebedeeld heeft gekregen. Voor de menners en de eventers strekt de competitie zich uit over twee locaties: het Derby terrein gelegen voor het ECdP en het terrein van de Hippische Zone aan de overkant van de weg. Aan beide kanten is een waterpartij gerealiseerd, naast verscheidene obstakels waaronder een ‘Trakhener’ en een Normandiëbank. 28

The first two weeks of the outdoor season were off to a great start with top ranking riders competing in Kronenberg from all over the world for the first Spring Tour. Over a thousand athletes participated in several classes up to CSI2*. Amongst them we saw super stars like Scott Brash and Bertram Allen who were preparing their future top horses just before heading off to the LGCT in Mexico. “I did come here before for a training show, but this is my first CSI at de Peelbergen. In my career I have seen many top class accommodations. However the ECdP is something special that you can’t find anywhere else in the world. Scott Brash especially drove here from Britain to compete for a second time. I think that says it all”, Irish rider Bertram Allen told us after winning one of the Longines Ranking classes. Belgian rider Jérôme Guery is another Olympic rider that praised the centre. “I wanted to see it with my own eyes. I had heard a great deal about the ECdP, but it is even better in real life. It is nothing short of fantastic”.

Last year the preparations started for two new grass arena’s and several obstacles including two water jumps. An upgrade that is not only beneficial for eventing and driving competitors but in addition gives the

Equiduct Zowel voor het mennen als voor de SGW Limburg, die plaatsvindt van 5 tot en met 7 mei, wordt de weg tussen beide terreinen dit jaar nog afgesloten. Door middel van een tijdelijke overgang kunnen de combinaties hun weg vervolgen. In de toekomst zijn er plannen om deze overgang de lucht in te bouwen door middel van een heus Equiduct: een viaduct voor paarden. Het idee komt voort uit het optimaal gebruik willen maken van de Hippische Zone in Kronenberg. Vanaf de voorzijde van het ECdP zal een verkeersbrug herrijzen naar de overkant van de Peelweg. Het 5 meter brede Equiduct zal naast een ruiterpad ook ruimte bieden voor een voetgangers- en fietspad. Voor beide disciplines zal het Equiduct opgenomen worden in het parcours, maar ook voor alle andere ruiters biedt de brug de mogelijkheid om na het oversteken een ritje te maken in het tegenovergelegen bos.

Voor ieder wat wils Tussen de internationale wedstrijden door staan er diverse nationale concoursen op de planning, naast onder andere stamboekkeuringen van het KWPN en de KFPS. Er worden verschillende beurzen georganiseerd en het restaurant catert het gehele jaar voor diverse zakelijke bijeenkomsten op het centrum, naast de verzorging van de innerlijke mens gedurende alle hippische evenementen. Springliefhebbers kunnen dit outdoor seizoen hun hart nog ophalen bij drie CSI’s in mei, juni en september. From the 20th till 23rd of April the Derby terrain will be used for the first time during a single-, two- and four hand driving competition that will serve as a test-event for the upcoming World Championships for single hand driving that will be held at the ECdP in 2018. The competition will take place over two locations: the Derby terrain and the additional terrain on the ‘Equestrian Zone’ just across the road. The course will feature several new obstacles, including a third water obstacle, a ‘Trakener’ and a Normandie bank.

Equiduct For the driving and the eventing of SGW Limburg, that will take place from the 5th till 7th of May, the road that splits the two location will be closed of this year. A temporary crossing will give safe passage from the Derby terrain to the ‘Equestrian Zone’. But in the future there are plans to build an Equiduct connecting the two areas. The 5 meter high bridge will allow horses, riders and bikers to cross from one zone to the other. Allowing the ECdP and the ‘Equestrian Zone’ to be used to their full potential. The Equiduct will provide all riders that visit at the centre the opportunity to cross the road and go out for a hack in the adjoining forest at their leisure.

ECdP is for everyone Next to all the international competitions many national events such as IBOP and studbook inspections for the KWPN and the KPFS, plus other national and regional shows are scheduled at the ECdP. The centre hosts several fairs and the restaurant is open for business lunches, dinners or other events all year round. As for equestrian enthusiast and showjumpers they can prepare themselves to fully enjoy the upcoming outdoor season that has yet three CSI’s in May, June and September to come. Wilde PAARDEN Wilde paarden? Zo vaak zie je ze niet meer in de weide lopen. Veel kuddes zijn immers door de jaren heen gedomesticeerd. Ze hebben een andere bestemming gekregen: werkpaard, rijpaard, aangespannen paard. Toch zijn er hier en daar in Europa nog wilde paarden te bewonderen. Dichterbij dan u zou vermoeden.

Wild horses? Unfortunate wild horses are not that common anymore in the scenery. Many herds have been domesticated. They have transformed into riding horses, driving or working forces. Still some breeds are still living in the wild in Europe. Closer than you can imagine.

Er zijn hier en daar in Europa nog wilde paarden te bewonderen. Dichterbij dan u zou vermoeden. Zoals in het Duitse Dülmen, op nog geen drie uur rijden van Antwerpen.

Europe still hosts some wild horses. In Germany’s Dülmen, only three hours drive from Antwerp, the Dülmer Wildpferd is living in its natural habitat.

Het Dülmener Wildpferd is een echt oerpaard, nauw verwant met meer bekende rassen als het Konik-paard en het Przewalski-paard. Sedert 1994 staat het evenwel op de rode lijst van bedreigde huisdiersoorten. Het kleine halfwitte paardje, zeg maar pony, dankt zijn naam aan de Duitse stad in de deelstaat Noordrijn-Westfalen waar in het ‘Merfelder Bruch’, een natuurgebied van driehonderdvijftig hectare, nog een grote kudde van dit ras leeft. Voor het eerst opgemerkt rond 1850.

The Dülmer Wildpferd is related to better known races like Konik-horses and the Przewalski. Since 1994 the horse is placed on the red list of endangered species. The small half white horse, better said pony, is named to its region of origin, Merfelder Bruch in Nordrein-Westfalen.

Het ‘Merfelder Bruch’ is een beschermd natuurgebied met de ‘Wildpferdebahn’ die kan bezocht worden van 1 maart tot en met 31 oktober. Let wel, alleen op zaterdagen, zon- en feestdagen. Maar voor echt spektakel moet u op de laatste zaterdag van mei in Dülmen zijn. Al sedert 1907 worden dan de éénjarige hengsten uit de kudde gehaald. Daarvoor wordt de hele kudde in het ‘Merfelder Bruch’ in een weidse arena bijeengedreven en is het de taak van een aantal jonge mannen om de dieren met de handen te vangen. Een traditie die heel wat toeschouwers weet te lokken. Er is immers heel wat moed, kracht en behendigheid vereist om deze opdracht tot een goed einde te brengen. Het is bovendien indrukwekkend wanneer de laatste jonge hengst is gevangen en de hele kudde de arena verlaat. De hengsten worden dan gechipt en verkocht op de bekende veiling van ‘Jährlinge’. Een unieke belevenis.

Croy protected twenty animals on a selected land. Thanks to the Duke the race has survived until this day. Today the race lives in a protected nature area of over three hundred hectare. The ‘Wildpferdebahn’ is open for visits from March 1 until October 31. However the real spectacle will be on the last Saturday of the opening season. Since 1907 the one-year-old stallions are parted from the herd. A handful group of young males will after try to catch those stallions. A task that asks for the necessary skills, bravery and power. The most magnificent is when the last stallion is catched and the herd leaves the arena. It is an unique experience.

Succesvol toetreden tot het E-segment is niet iedereen gegeven. De Duitse drie hebben het al sinds mensenheugenis voor het zeggen en hoewel outsiders verwoede pogingen ondernamen, strandden deze meestal zonder resultaat. Een enkeling mocht even stralen, - zoals Peugeot met de 607 - maar niet genoeg om een opvolger te krijgen. Jaguar verkocht van de XF sinds zijn introductie in 2008 gemiddeld zo’n 260 exemplaren per jaar. Vergeleken met de A6, E-Klasse en de 5 Serie zijn zulke aantallen weinig indrukwekkend, maar toch zien de Britten de toekomst rooskleuriger in en presenteerden een geheel nieuwe generatie.

When the first generation of the XF was presented to the public in 2007, the journalists were slightly shocked thanks to the sleek and dynamic lines of the car. Now the second generation of the luxurious large sedan is presented and it looks like an enlarged XE - the smallest car in the range of Jaguar. However, the car does have its own face because of the stretched lines. If you order car as we drove it - so with the various dark accents - the car has a sporty and luxurious look. The XF has the typical tail lights, the same as all new ‘Jags’, so the car is recognizable as a Jaguar, even in the dark.

Puik in orde Niet alleen het uiterlijk heeft veel weg van de XE, ook het interieur lijkt één-op-één overgenomen. Maar ook hier heeft de XF zijn eigen gezicht. Het dashboard is wat hoger en ziet er daardoor statig uit. Net als bij de eerste generatie zijn de ventilatieroosters op het dashboard ingeklapt als je instapt. Zodra je de startknop hebt ingedrukt, draaien ze open. Echt nut heeft het niet, maar het ziet er nog steeds gaaf uit. Het multimediasysteem is identiek aan wat we al tegenkwamen in de diverse nieuwe producten van het Jaguar Land Roverconcern. Het ziet er niet alleen grafisch goed uit, maar het werkt ook goed. Het is niet het allersnelste of meest innovatieve systeem, maar het doet precies wat het moet doen. Daarbij is de ergonomie puik in orde.

Qua ruimte heb je niks te klagen in de XF. Je zit op fijne stoelen en enigszins ingenesteld naast de hoge middentunnel. Toch is de zitplek ruim genoeg en bieden de zetels zowel een hoop ondersteuning als comfort. Ook voor de bagage is ruim plek. Met een inhoud van 540 liter ligt dat op hetzelfde niveau als de concurrentie. Op het gebied van afwerking en materiaalgebruik zet Jaguar elke keer weer stappen in de goede richting. Bijna overal vind je mooie materialen en de gebruikte knoppen voelen degelijk aan. Daarbij zijn de naden tussen de verschillende panelen klein en hoor je nooit rammels of kraakjes.

It does not only looks good graphically, but it also works well. In addition, the ergonomics are excellent. In terms of space in the XF there is nothing to complain about. The seats are comfortable and you are somewhat nestled next to the high center console. Nevertheless, there is enough space and the seats offer both a lot of support and comfort. For your luggage there is a sufficient amount of space. With a capacity of 540 liters it is on the same level as the competition has. In terms of workmanship and materials, Jaguar is making an improvement with every new car they introduce . Almost everywhere you find nice materials and the buttons feel solid. In addition, the seams between the panels are small and you never hear a rattle or a creak.

Smaken komen samen In het vooronder van de gereden Jaguar ligt een tweeliter dieselmotor die 180 pk en 430 Nm koppel levert. Dankzij het relatief lage wagengewicht sleurt hij de auto in 8 seconden naar de ‘100’ en stopt het versnellen bij bijna 230 km / u. Dat smaken verschillen, geldt niet alleen in het geval van iets mooi of lelijk vinden, maar ook voor de manier hoe een auto is geveerd en gedempt. Wil je vooral comfort, dan kies je voor een Audi of Mercedes-Benz, wil je wat sportiefs onder je kont, dan kies je voor een BMW. Het is wat gechargeerd, maar er zit wel een kern van waarheid in. Jaguar heeft er voor gekozen om flink werk te maken van het onderstel en die investering loont. Zelden hebben we een auto gereden die zo’n prettige mix is van comfort en sportiviteit. Bochten kun je met hoge snelheid nemen, maar toch worden richels en andere oneffenheden in de weg goed weggewerkt. Hierdoor kun je uiterst comfortabel van A naar B cruisen.

Preferences come together Under the hood of the car we drove, there is a two-liter diesel engine which delivers 180 horsepower and 430 Nm of torque. Due to the relatively low vehicle weight, the car accelerates in 8 seconds to a ‘100’ and stops accelerating at almost 230 km / h. Everybody has their own preferences, not only in the case of finding something beautiful or not, but also in the stiffness of the suspension and the absorbers. If you prefer a comfortable ride, you choose an Audi or Mercedes-Benz and if you want something that drives like a sports car, you choose a BMW. It is something exaggerated, but there is an element of truth in it. Jaguar has decided to make work of the chassis and the investments do pay of; we almost never drove a car that’s such a good mix of comfort and sportiness. You can make turns with high speeds, but yet ledges and other road imperfections are well paved by the chassis. This makes that you can cruise in high comfort from A to B.

Hoewel een stuk minder ‘choquerend’ dan zijn voorganger, is het ontwerp nog steeds onderscheidend van de massa. Dat men flink werk heeft gemaakt van het onderstel, de aandrijflijn en het interieur, betaalt zich uit in een totaalplaatje dat ons overtuigt. We kunnen wel stellen dat er nu weinig tegen de Jaguar werkt om niet tot de succesnummers van zijn segment te gaan behoren.

Success in prospect It is a sign of guts that Jaguar introduces a complete new generation of the XF. Although a lot less ‘shocking’ than its predecessor, the design is still distinctive from the mass. The huge investments on the improvements of the chassis, powertrain and interior, pays off in an overall picture that convinces. We can say that there is little against the Jaguar to become one of the successes of its segment.

De huidige wedstrijdkalender is tegenwoordig overvol en elke week wordt er wel ergens te lande een hippisch evenement georganiseerd. Onze wedstrijdpaarden worden heel intensief ingezet en krijgen gedurende het seizoen heel wat arbeid voorgeschoteld. De hippische wereld in zijn totaal is heden ten dage verantwoordelijk voor een significante economische omzet. De commerciĂŤle belangen nemen toe en dit heeft als gevolg dat de ganse paardenwereld progressief meer en meer professioneel wordt gemanaged. Zowel de organisatie van onze fokkerij als van hippische evenementen zijn over het laatste decennium dermate geĂŤvolueerd dat amateurisme niet meer wordt getolereerd. Today, the competitive calendar is stuffed: every weekend equine events are organized all over the country. Our competitive horses are used very intensively and have to work very hard during the season. The equine world is responsible for a considerable economic trade. The commercial interests are getting more important and because of that the equine world has to be managed in a more progressive and professional way. Both the organization of our breeding as well as the organization of equine events have evolved in such a way that amateurism isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t allowed anymore.

Het niveau van onze regionale, nationale en internationale wedstrijden is exponentieel gestegen. Kortom, de ganse omkadering van de paardensport is sterk mee geëvolueerd met de moderne tijd en stelt hoge eisen. Het is dus belangrijk eens stil te staan hoe we onze paarden het best kunnen voorbereiden en diergeneeskundig kunnen begeleiden om aan deze verhoogde druk te weerstaan.

The level of our regional, national and international competitions has risen exponential. In sum: the staffing of equestrian sport has evolved as well and make high demands on its competence. We thought it was important to check how we can prepare and support our horses in a such a way, they will be able to stand strong against the increased pressure they have to deal with. The pressure to achieve is a constant in our modern society, as well as in horse business. Maintaining to put up good performances over a longer period of time is a real challenge. We want our horses to be at their top level for several years and we want them to be able to jump on a high level. We’d like our horses to riding competitions until their sixteenth, seventeenth our even longer.

Prestatie is een constante in onze moderne maatschappij en dus ook in de paardenwereld. Het aanhouden van de prestatie over een langere termijn is de echte uitdaging. We verlangen allemaal dat onze paarden meerdere jaren op hun top zijn en op een hoog niveau kunnen meedraaien. Het liefst zien we onze spring- en dressuurpaarden tot hun 16, 17 jaar of zelfs langer meedraaien op het hoogste niveau om zo een maximaal rendement te halen uit de vele jaren die geïnvesteerd zijn in hun als jong paard. De opleiding van een jong paard is een lange weg en kost veel energie, tijd en geld. Die opleiding kan en mag echter niet versneld worden in een poging om het rendement te maximaliseren. Het is veel gezonder en uiteindelijk rendabeler om te werken aan een stevige basis en het paard met de beste zorgen te omringen, met als doel de carrière te verlengen. 88

Of course your goal keeps the same: making their sportive career as long as possible.

Er zijn nog te veel paarden die op een te jonge leeftijd ‘opgebruikt’ zijn en voortijdig dienen teruggetrokken worden uit de sport. Korte termijn visie overheerst vaak nog op een lange termijn visie. Naast gezond verstand, ervaring, een goed management en veel geduld is ook de diergeneeskundige omkadering van cruciaal belang in het uitbouwen van een lange succesvolle carrière. Ook de diergeneeskunde is constant in evolutie en op zoek naar verbeteringen en meer kennis en kunde. Grote investeringen worden gedaan in onderzoek, opleiding en het ontwikkelen van de meest geavanceerde diagnostische en therapeutische apparatuur. Verder is het opbouwen van ervaring en het herkennen van de noden van een ouder worden sportpaard cruciaal voor de dierenarts. Een correcte diagnostiek is de basis voor een goed management van een sportpaard. We moeten eerst exact weten wat er aan de hand is, alvorens we een correcte behandeling op lange termijn kunnen uittekenen. De diergeneeskunde beschikt tegenwoordig over geavanceerde scanners zoals scintigrafie en NMR, die naast de radiografie en echografie, van onschatbare waarde zijn in de zoektocht naar de juiste diagnose.

Next to common sense, experience and good management and a lot off patience, the medical guidance is very important as well to assure your horse from a long career. Veterinary medicine evolves constantly and vets are always searching for better ways to treat your horse. A lot of investments has been made to support several studies, in education and in the development of the most advanced and diagnostic equipment.On top of that the building up experience and recognizing the needs of an older sporthorse are very important for a vet. Het is bewezen dat bij zeer veel verschillende aandoeningen er een rechtstreeks verband is tussen de vroege detectie van het letsel en de prognose. Met andere woorden: hoe sneller we een correcte diagnose hebben, hoe sneller we een adequate behandeling kunnen instellen, en hoe beter de kansen worden om het paard te kunnen recupereren als sportpaard. Preventie is een tweede kernwoord in een succesvolle opvolging. Ingrijpen vooraleer de problemen ons boven het hoofd groeien of vooraleer er onomkeerbare schade is opgetreden. Denk maar aan het preventief verwijderen van OCD chips in de kogel, de sprong of de knie. Dergelijke fragmenten veroorzaken op lange termijn (verschillende jaren!) onomkeerbare kraakbeenschade in een gewricht. Als gevolg daarvan ontstaat artrose en daar zijn tot op heden geen curatieve behandelingen voor mogelijk. Enkel controleren van de symptomen met symptomatische behandeling kunnen dan nog soelaas brengen. Een vroege detectie en handelen kan dus veel problemen voorkomen. De ervaring die werd opgebouwd door met sportpaarden van 10 jaar en ouder die op niveau presteren te werken, leert ons dat dergelijke fragmenten wel degelijk verantwoordelijk kunnen zijn voor prestatievermindering.

The right diagnostics are very important for a good management of a sporthorse. We have to know exactly what’s wrong before we can decide which treatment we’re going to use. The veterinary medicine has very advanced scanners nowadays, like scintigraphy and NMR, new techniques that are used next to radiography and echographs to make the right diagnosis. Science proved that there’s a direct correlation between an early detection of the injury and the prognosis. In other words: how earlier we can machete right diagnosis, how earlier we can start the right treatment and how bigger the chances are that the horse will be able to resume its career as sporthorse. Prevention is the second key word in a successful succession. It is important to take action

Vele letsels die voorkomen bij sportpaarden, of die nu op hoog of laag niveau presteren, zijn ten gevolge slijtage die al dan niet voortijdig kan optreden. Een correcte en aangepaste belasting is dus noodzakelijk. Het is belangrijk te weten, middels een goede diagnostiek of een paard absoluut nood heeft aan een rust en herstelperiode of dat het toegestaan is om te behandelen en het paard in het werk te houden. Een voorbeeld ter illustratie. Een paard kan kreupel zijn vanuit de voet. Indien een NMR onderzoek aantoont dat het letsel, die de oorzaak van de pijn en kreupelheid is, voornamelijk in het straalbeen zelf of in het gewricht gelokaliseerd is, dan is het zaak van het paard zo snel mogelijk medicamenteus terug op de been te krijgen en het werk zo snel mogelijk progressief te hervatten. Indien echter blijkt dat het letsel in de pees of een ligament gelokaliseerd is, dan moet het paard absoluut een langere tijd rust krijgen om het letsel de tijd te geven zich te herstellen. Snel opnieuw belasten, zou de situatie op termijn alleen maar erger maken. Een regelmatige screening van sportpaarden is belangrijk. Er dient als het ware een inventaris

The experience the clinic has by working with horses from 10 years and older that are performing on a high level, learns that the fragments that we describe can be responsible for performance degradation. A lot of injuries that occur with sport horses, whether they compete at a high or lower level, can be ascribed to wear. Horses can be subject to wear from a very early age. A correct and adapted load is also necessary. It is important to know whether a horse really needs rest and a convalescence or if it is allowed to treat the horse while still working it. An example: a horse can be lame from its foot. If a NMR examination show that the injury causing the pain and the lameness, is located in the frog or even in the joint itself, youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll have to treat the horse with medication and resume its progressive training as soon as possible. But if the examination shows that the injury is located at the height of the tendon or the ligament, the horse really needs its rest. Starting to work the horse too early, would only cause an even more severe injury in the future. 91

Het is een utopie om te denken dat een paard over het verloop van zijn carrière intact blijft. Ook sportmensen zijn op het einde van hun carrière min of meer ‘gehavend’. Dit gezegd zijnde moet men dus kunnen leven met het aanwezig zijn van letsels. Dit wil echter niet noodzakelijk zeggen dat dergelijke paarden onbruikbaar zijn voor hun beoogde doel, namelijk sporten. De kunst van een goede begeleiding bestaat erin paarden met hun aanwezige slijtageletsels alsnog op een diervriendelijke en verantwoorde manier hun carrière verder te laten zetten. Te vaak wordt gedacht dat als een letsel niet te genezen valt, het meteen over is voor de toekomst. Bij sommige type letsels blijft dat zo, maar evenveel letsels zijn chronisch, niet te genezen, maar kunnen toch perfect gedurende een lange tijd onder controle gehouden worden. Prestatievermindering is een ‘nieuw’ en courant voorkomende klacht, waarmee de paarden tegenwoordig bij de dierenarts of bij ons op de kliniek worden aangeboden. De norm ligt hoger als vroeger en de belangen nemen toe. Mensen zijn dus vaak vroeger gealarmeerd. Het is vaak moeilijk om bij 92

This doesn’t mean that the hore at hand won’t be able to have a sportive career anymore. If you handle you equine business well, you’ll manage to keep the horses working in a animal-friendly and safe way. Too often horse owners think that a injury can’t be healed, putting a cross over the future career of the horse. It is true that some injuries will never heal, but a lot of injuries are conical as well, meaning they can be controlled for a long period of time. Performance degradation is a ‘new’ and often occurring complaint. Horses are dropped off at our clinic with the owner saying that the horse ‘lost its will to perform’. The stakes are a lot higher than before and performing well became more important. Because of that, people are alarmed more easily. It’s not an easy task to determine the right cause with these kind of horse, the only way

De oorzaken kunnen heel variabel en multipel zijn en vaak tonen dergelijke paarden geen afwijkingen tijdens een klinisch onderzoek. Dan is er vaak nood, naast het klassiek orthopedisch onderzoek, aan geavanceerd onderzoek zoals een scintigrafie of een gespecialiseerd neurologisch onderzoek. Via dergelijke objectieve onderzoeksmethoden kunnen we in een meerderheid van de gevallen toch aantonen wat aan de basis ligt van het verzet of het minder presteren in het algemeen. Gerichte behandelingen zijn niet zelden succesvol. Goed management, gezond verstand, geduld, correcte diagnostiek en ervaring zijn sleutelwoorden in het uitbouwen van een ‘gezonde’ en langdurige carrière. Voorkomen is beter dan genezen en indien genezen niet mogelijk is, is ‘managen’ een andere optie.

Thanks to this kind of objective methods of investigation, we can, in the majority of the cases, show what’s causing the performance degradation. Directed treatments are usually quite successful. Good management, common sense, patience, correct diagnostics and experience are the key words for a long, healthy career. Prevention is better than cure, and if healing is not possible, managing is.
