"Ik blijf met mijn beide voeten op de grond. Dat helpt je om realistisch te blijven en je te focussen op de sport."

Niet alleen is Beezie Madden de Amerikaanse leading lady, ze spant de kroon als 's werelds beste amazone. Madden verzamelde al twee Olympische teamgoud medailles, een individuele Olympische bronzen medaille en twee zilveren en bronzen medailles op de FEI Wereldruiterspelen. Beezie, sinds enkele jaren ben je de beste amazone van Amerika? Wat is het geheim van je succes? Ik probeer alles realistisch te bekijken en niet te uitbundig te worden. Dat helpt me om gefocust in de ring aan de start te komen. Soms lijkt het erop alsof ik een beetje saai ben op mijn paard. Maar het is juist die kalmte die ik communiceer naar mijn paarden. Dat helpt om hen ook rustig te houden en gefocust op de job. Verder kan ik als ruiter rekenen op de steun van een enorm gemotiveerd team en mijn sponsor, Abigail Wexner. Zij heeft een groot deel van mijn succes bepaald. Ruim vijftien jaar werken we nu samen en ik durf er niet aan te denken dat de samenwerking ooit zou stoppen. Dankzij Ms. Wexner heb ik enkele van de beste paarden ter wereld in mijn stal. Rijdt Abigail Wexner zelf te paard? Abigail rijdt zelf ook wel eens te paard. Maar ze houdt gewoon enorm veel van haar dieren. Ik denk dat Ms. Wexner echt houdt van de competitie. Ze houdt van een uitdaging en gaat die niet uit de weg. Het is niet voldoende dat ze het beste paard heeft. Ze wil dat haar paarden presteren op het hoogste niveau.
Not only is Beezie Madden the leading USA female show jumping rider, more honourable is to name her the leading lady of the international show jumping community. Madden collected two Olympic team Gold medals, an individual Olympic bronze medal as well as two silver and bronze medals at the FEI World Equestrian Games. Since a couple of yours you are named best female show jumping rider of the USA. What is your secret to your succes? I keep my both feet on the ground. I won’t get to over excited in the arena. This helps me to keep my cal mand focus when competing. Sometimes it might seems like I’m a bit boring when I’m on my horse. But that is me trying to keep my calm and I guess I communicate that state of mind to my horses. This helps them to keep their focus on the job. But the real key to success is the support and help of a fantastic team. I’m so grateful I have a fantastic team behind me. As well as the support of Ms. Wexner. Our relationship has lasted over 15 years now. Thanks to her I’ve the best horses in the world in my stables. Without somebody like her it would be really, really difficult. Does Abigail Wexner compete herself? Abigail rides a little bit herself and loves the horses. She also loves the challenge. You know; even if you have enough money to spend, it is still so difficult to make it in the top of the sport and it is not only
Dat is voor haar de uitdaging, net als het volgende toppaard in haar stal hebben. Ms. Wexner houdt van de uitdaging. De paardensport is je leefwereld. Wat maakt deze uniek? De paardensport is een unieke sport. Ik bewonder het dat zowel mannen als vrouwen naast elkaar, op een gelijk niveau strijden. Hetzelfde geldt voor de paarden. Bovendien is je teamgenoot een dier. Je kan je paard niet vertellen dat die ene wedstrijd belangrijker is als de andere. Hoewel ik denk dat de beste paarden dat wel aanvoelen. Een gewone dag in het leven van Beezie Madden? Elke dag leef ik tussen de paarden. Een gewone dag start ik om acht uur in de ochtend. Ik probeer vijf paarden per dag te rijden als ik thuis ben. Het is een beetje afhankelijk welke wedstrijden er op het programma staan. Soms zijn het er meer. Het is belangrijk genoeg tijd met je paarden door te brengen. Elk paard heeft me geholpen een betere ruiter te worden. Ik herinner me nog mijn eerste paard, Northern Magic. Het was een hele opgave om zijn gezondheid optimal te houden. Ik denk dat hij me echt heeft geleerd dat paardrijden meer is als in een zadel

I think Mrs. Wexner loves the competition of the actual competition, but also of trying to be the one to have the next really good horse. You live horses, but what makes the sport unique? It’s unique: Men and women can compete equally and it is the same with the hores. You’re working with an animal which adds a privilege to the sport: You can ‘t tell your orse that this competition is more important than the previous one for example, but the best ones sense it. A regular day in the life of Beezie Madden? I’d say that in a typical day, I start riding at 8 and probably do an average of 5 horses a day when I’m at home. Depending on if we have a big show we’re getting ready for, I might do more than that. As far as jumping or flatting, the majority for sure is flatting but it really depends on the time of year. I think you have to bond with your horses. Every horse has helped me to become a better rider, really. My first international horse was Northern

zitten. Hoe het allemaal begon? Ik ben niet gestart met de steun van enkele sponsors. Terwijl ik school liep in Virginia startte ik met rijden bij Katie Prudent. Ik werkte er als jobstudent in de zomer. Als ik afstudeerde kon ik meteen aan de slag bij Katie. Dus heb ik de universiteit laten liggen en ben ik beginnen rijden. Gelukkig waren mijn ouders akkoord met mijn beslissing. In 1987, ongeveer vijf jaar later startte ik bij John (Haar huidige echtgenoot, red). John werkte voordien ook bij Katie maar startte nadien zelfstandig. Hij bouwde een prachtige stal in Wisconsin. John vertelde me op een dag dat hij een medewerker zocht zoals mij om mee samen te werken. Ik antwoordde “Waarom vraag je het niet gewoon?” Welk paard zal je altijd bijblijven? Heel wat paarden staan in m’n geheugen gebrand. Maar als ik er dan toch één moet kiezen is het zonder twijfel Authentic. Authentic kwam bij me wanneer hij zes jaar oud was. Hij is nog steeds bij ons. Ik heb het volledig levenstraject van Authentic meegemaakt. Dat is onbetaalbaar. Hij won drie Olympische medailles en twee WEG-medailles. Hij is echt speciaal voor mij.

Magic, and he was a difficult one to manage for his soundness and because he was very careful. He needed a lot of confidence and a lot of accurate riding. I’d have to say he was probably my first horse that really, with the management of everything and also the riding, helped me progress. How it all started?

While I went to junior college in Virginia, I started to ride with Katie Prudent as a working student. When I graduated Katie offered me a job. I took that instead of going to University – which was my plan – because I did not know what I was going to pick as a major. I knew I liked horses and my parents were very supportive. I started working in 1987 for John, about five years later. I had already met him while working at Katie’s, as he was employed there too. Then he branched out starting his own business. He moved to a farm in Wisconsin. John one day said he wished he could get somebody like me to come and work for him. I simply said: “Well, why don’t you ask?” and I said yes. Which is your most memorable horse
A lot of them, but if I have to choose: Athentic. I got him when he was 6 year old and he’s still with us, so we saw his whole journey. He has won three Olympic medals and two World Equestrian Games medals, so he will always be special to me.

"Het design moet praktisch zijn maar ook inspireren, zoals een museum." Net buiten Buenos Aires bevindt zich deze modernistische stal. De architect, vond, net als de eigenaar, Nacho Figueras, zijn inspiratie bij de iconische stal van de Mexicaanse architect, Luis Barragan. "Mijn droom die werkelijkheid wordt en mijn paarden die verblijven in dit architecturaal pareltje dat is onschatbaar," vertelt Figueras. "Ik houd ervan om gewoon op het dak van m'n stal te zitten met een glas wijn en enkele vrienden. Hier kan je nog echt je zorgen vergeten." De architect maakte gebruik van duurbbaar beton en hout. De zadelkamer is opgevat als een soort expositieruimte. When Argentinian polo player and St. Regis Connoisseur Nacho Figueras set about creating a 30-acre ranch outside Buenos Aires two years ago, his thoughts turned to Cuadra San Cristóbal, the iconic equestrian estate created in 1968 by the late, great Mexican modernist architect Luis Barragán. “I have a thing for architecture,” says Figueras. “And I love San Cristóbal – in particular Barragán’s reflective pools.” “Seeing our vision come true, and our beloved horses in a place that few could dream about, was a great moment,” says Figueras, who spent three years completing the ambitious project. Oblivious to the architectural pedigree of their elegant surroundings, his pampered beasts graze on a lush grass-topped roof and drink from sculptural pools before bedding down at night. “One of my favorite things to do is to sit on the stable roof at sunset with my friends and a bottle of wine,” Figueras adds. “When you’re up there, you forget about anywhere else.”

"Natuurlijk ben ik emotioneel. Er is zoveel gewijzigd de laatste weken."
Een bewogen strijd waarbij het spannend bleef tot op het eind, dat was het Belgische kampioenschap springen 2018. In Lanaken haalde Dominique Hendrickx ontroerd de overwinning. Na afloop bleek Hendrickx een vat vol emoties. “De laatste weken is m’n leven volledig gewijzigd. Professioneel zijn er heel wat wijzigingen gebeurd. Ik heb mijn zelfstandige carrière ingeruild voor een partnership met Gilbert De Roock,” begint Hendrickx. “Hoewel ik nog niet zo lang een combinatie vorm met Kannabis voelen we elkaar wel goed aan. Kannabis is een talentvol maar ook atypisch paard dat zich volledig inzet voor zijn ruiter. Hoewel hij nog maar acht jaar oud is heeft hij reeds een prachtig palmares bijeen gesprongen. Zo haalde hij ook de overwinning in de Grote Prijs van Zandhoven. Ik ben blij dat ik hem in de toekomst zal mogen blijven rijden.” Ogen op de prijs “Ik was gebrand op de prijs, maar dat het ook werkelijkheid zou worden had ik niet durven dromen. De Belgische titel winnen staat op de bucketlist van zowat alle springruiters. Ik zet al enkele jaren mijn zinnen op deze titel. Ik ben super blij dat het deze keer gelukt is.” Van bij het begin was duidelijk dat Hendrickx alle kaarten in hand hield. “Ik heb het spel proberen spelen zoals het moet. We hebben ook echt getraind voor dit kampioenschap. Het idee was Kannabis een overtuigende eerste

Eventually an emotionally Dominique Hendrickx claimed victory. “The last weeks a lot has changed in my life. Professionally I accepted a new challenge. I’ve traded my independent career for a cooperation with Belgium’s trader, Gilbert De Roock,” starts Hendrickx. “It only has been a few months since I teamed up with Kannabis, but we feel each other. Kannabis is a very talented but as well an a-typical horse. He is extremely motivated for his rider. Although he is only eight years old, Kannabis has jumped together an impressive string of prices. Recently we jumped to victory in the Grand Prix of Zandhoven. I am grateful and happy I’ll be able to continue riding him.” Eyes on the price “I was set on winning the titel, but also realistic. I didn’t expect it to happen, not even in my wildest dreams. Winning the Belgian titel has been on my bucket list for a while now. I think it is a dream of most riders. I wanted to win the sash for a couple of years now. Finally I did it.” From the start Henrickx had set his eyes on the price. It seemed like he did hold all the cards in hand. “I played the game like it should be. We also trained the days before like it should be for a championship. The initial idea was to familiarize Kannabis with this type

Hendrickx reed vroeger al in dienst van Peffer. Hun hoogtepunt dateert van tien jaar geleden, toen Hendrickx de GP van Antwerpen won met An Sidec. Nadien besloot Hendrickx om voor eigen rekening te rijden.
Hendrickx used to rider for Albert Peffer, the owner of Cannabis. But that was about ten years ago. Aboard An Sidec, the show jumping rider impressed in the Grand Prix of Antwerp. After Hendrickx decided to start his independent career.
“Onze samenwerking is in de beste verstandhouding beëindigd. Dit jaar besloot Albert Peffer om zijn stal te verkopen, op uitzondering van zijn goudhaantje Kannabis. Die mocht nooit vertrekken van zijn vrouw en zo contacteerde hij mij in maart met de vraag om Kannabis te rijden. Ik heb geen seconde getwijfeld.”
“Our cooperation ended with mutual respect. This year Mr. Peffer decided to sell his stable, except for his best horse, Kannabis. Kannabis is reserved for the sport. That is when they contacted me. Asking me if I wanted to compete their marvelous horse. I didn’t hesitate a minute.
Het leven van Dominique Hendrickx kreeg dankzij Kannabis ook een andere wending. “Ik ben 45 jaar en wil nog één keer alles op de sport zetten, omdat ik voel dat Kannabis dat mogelijk kan maken. Als zelfstandige ben je verplicht om je paarden te verkopen, dat is je enige broodwinning. Ik wou op eigen benen staan, maar daar betaal ik een prijs voor. Het is moeilijk om door te breken, want mijn beste paarden worden als eerste verkocht. Met Kannabis heb ik weer een sportieve toekomst. Daarbij komt dat ik nu ga werken voor Gilbert De Roock, die ook paarden heeft voor de sport.”
Hendrickx is now in his second life thanks to Kannabis. “I am 45 years old and want to focus my career on the sport, just one more time. Kannabis makes this possible. As an independ-ent rider you are forced to sell your horses at a certain moment. The best horses are sold first, this makes a professional sportive career very difficult. As I’ll be riding for Gilbert De Roock, the sport will be my main focus from now on.”

De huidige wedstrijdkalender is tegenwoordig overvol en elke week wordt er wel ergens te lande een hippisch evenement georganiseerd. Onze wedstrijdpaarden worden heel intensief ingezet en krijgen gedurende het seizoen heel wat arbeid voorgeschoteld. De hippische wereld in zijn totaal is heden ten dage verantwoordelijk voor een significante economische omzet. De commerciÍle belangen nemen toe en dit heeft als gevolg dat de ganse paardenwereld progressief meer en meer professioneel wordt gemanaged. Zowel de organisatie van onze fokkerij als van hippische evenementen zijn over het laatste decennium dermate geÍvolueerd dat amateurisme niet meer wordt getolereerd. Today, the competitive calendar is stuffed: every weekend equine events are organized all over the country. Our competitive horses are used very intensively and have to work very hard during the season. The equine world is responsible for a considerable economic trade. The commercial interests are getting more important and because of that the equine world has to be managed in a more progressive and professional way. Both the organization of our breeding as well as the organization of equine events have evolved in such a way that amateurism isn’t allowed anymore.

Het niveau van onze regionale, nationale en internationale wedstrijden is exponentieel gestegen. Kortom, de ganse omkadering van de paardensport is sterk mee geëvolueerd met de moderne tijd en stelt hoge eisen. Het is dus belangrijk eens stil te staan hoe we onze paarden het best kunnen voorbereiden en diergeneeskundig kunnen begeleiden om aan deze verhoogde druk te weerstaan.
The level of our regional, national and international competitions has risen exponential. In sum: the staffing of equestrian sport has evolved as well and make high demands on its competence. We thought it was important to check how we can prepare and support our horses in a such a way, they will be able to stand strong against the increased pressure they have to deal with. The pressure to achieve is a constant in our modern society, as well as in horse business. Maintaining to put up good performances over a longer period of time is a real challenge. We want our horses to be at their top level for several years and we want them to be able to jump on a high level. We’d like our horses to riding competitions until their sixteenth, seventeenth our even longer.

Prestatie is een constante in onze moderne maatschappij en dus ook in de paardenwereld. Het aanhouden van de prestatie over een langere termijn is de echte uitdaging. We verlangen allemaal dat onze paarden meerdere jaren op hun top zijn en op een hoog niveau kunnen meedraaien. Het liefst zien we onze spring- en dressuurpaarden tot hun 16, 17 jaar of zelfs langer meedraaien op het hoogste niveau om zo een maximaal rendement te halen uit de vele jaren die geïnvesteerd zijn in hun als jong paard. De opleiding van een jong paard is een lange weg en kost veel energie, tijd en geld. Die opleiding kan en mag echter niet versneld worden in een poging om het rendement te maximaliseren. Het is veel gezonder en uiteindelijk rendabeler om te werken aan een stevige basis en het paard met de beste zorgen te omringen, met als doel de carrière te verlengen. Er zijn nog te veel paarden die op een te jonge leeftijd ‘ opgebruikt’ zijn en voortijdig dienen teruggetrokken
We want them to achieve something on the highest level to make up for the time and money we put in them when they were still young. The education of a young horses takes some time and costs a lot of money, time and energy. Despite that, it is very important that we don’t educate our horses to quickly while trying to get the overall efficiency as high as possible. It is much heartier and in the end much more profitable to work out a steady basis with your horse first, surrounding the horse with the best care it can ask for. Of course your goal

Naast gezond verstand, ervaring, een goed management en veel geduld is ook de diergeneeskundige omkadering van cruciaal belang in het uitbouwen van een lange succesvolle carrière. Ook de diergeneeskunde is constant in evolutie en op zoek naar verbeteringen en meer kennis en kunde. Grote investeringen worden gedaan in onderzoek, opleiding en het ontwikkelen van de meest geavanceerde diagnostische en therapeutische apparatuur. Verder is het opbouwen van ervaring en het herkennen van de noden van een ouder worden sportpaard cruciaal voor de dierenarts. Een correcte diagnostiek is de basis voor een goed management van een sportpaard. We moeten eerst exact weten wat er aan de hand is, alvorens we een correcte behandeling op lange termijn kunnen uittekenen. De diergeneeskunde beschikt tegenwoordig over geavanceerde scanners zoals scintigrafie en NMR, die naast de radiografie en echografie, van onschatbare waarde zijn in de zoektocht naar de juiste diagnose.

Het is bewezen dat bij zeer veel verschillende aandoeningen er een rechtstreeks verband is tussen de vroege detectie van het letsel en de prognose. Met andere woorden: hoe sneller we een correcte diagnose hebben, hoe sneller we een adequate behandeling kunnen instellen, en hoe beter de kansen worden om het paard te kunnen recupereren als sportpaard. Preventie is een tweede kernwoord in een succesvolle opvolging. Ingrijpen vooraleer de problemen ons boven het hoofd groeien of vooraleer er onomkeerbare schade is opgetreden. Denk maar aan het preventief verwijderen van OCD chips in de kogel, de sprong of de knie.

Dergelijke fragmenten veroorzaken op lange termijn (verschillende jaren!) onomkeerbare kraakbeenschade in een gewricht. Als gevolg daarvan ontstaat artrose en daar zijn tot op heden geen curatieve behandelingen voor mogelijk. Enkel controleren van de symptomen met symptomatische behandeling kunnen dan nog oelaas brengen. Een vroege detectie en handelen kan dus veel problemen voorkomen. De ervaring die werd opgebouwd door met sportpaarden van 10 jaar en ouder die op niveau presteren te werken, leert ons dat dergelijke fragmenten wel degelijk verantwoordelijk kunnen zijn voor prestatievermindering.

The right diagnostics are very important for a good management of a sporthorse. We have to know exactly what’s wrong before we can decide which treatment we’re going to use. The veterinary medicine has very advanced scanners nowadays, like scintigraphy and NMR, new techniques that are used next to radiography and echographs to make the right diagnosis. Science proved that there’s a direct correlation between an early detection of the injury and the prognosis. In other words: how earlier we can machete right diagnosis, how earlier we can start the right treatment and how bigger the chances are that the horse will be able to resume its career as sporthorse. Prevention is the second key word in a successful succession. It is important to take action before the injury gets to severe to handle and before irreversible damage has occurred. Think about the preventive removal of OCD chips in the pastern, in the knee or in the tarsal joint. On the long term, these fragments cause irreversible damage to the cartilage. Because
Vele letsels die voorkomen bij sportpaarden, of die nu op hoog of laag niveau presteren, zijn ten gevolge slijtage die al dan niet voortijdig kan optreden. Een correcte en aangepaste belasting is dus noodzakelijk. Het is belangrijk te weten, middels een goede diagnostiek of een paard absoluut nood heeft aan een rust en herstelperiode of dat het toegestaan is om te behandelen en het paard in het werk te houden. Een voorbeeld ter illustratie. Een paard kan kreupel zijn vanuit de voet. Indien een NMR onderzoek aantoont dat het letsel, die de oorzaak van de pijn en kreupelheid is, voornamelijk in het straalbeen zelf of in het gewricht gelokaliseerd is, dan is het zaak van het paard zo snel mogelijk medicamenteus terug op de been te krijgen en het werk zo snel mogelijk progressief te hervatten. Indien echter blijkt dat het letsel in de pees of een ligament gelokaliseerd is, dan moet het paard absoluut een langere tijd rust krijgen om het letsel de tijd te geven zich te herstellen. Snel opnieuw belasten, zou de situatie op termijn alleen maar erger maken. Een regelmatige screening van sportpaarden is belangrijk. Er dient als het ware een inventaris

If a NMR examination show that the injury causing the pain and the lameness, is located in the frog or even in the joint itself, you’ll have to treat the horse with medication and resume its progressive training as soon as possible. But if the examination shows that the injury is located at the height of the tendon or the ligament, the horse really needs its rest. Starting to work the horse too early, would only cause an even more severe injury in the future.

Dit gezegd zijnde moet men dus kunnen leven met het aanwezig zijn van letsels. Dit wil echter niet noodzakelijk zeggen dat dergelijke paarden onbruikbaar zijn voor hun beoogde doel, namelijk sporten. De kunst van een goede begeleiding bestaat erin paarden met hun aanwezige slijtageletsels alsnog op een diervriendelijke en verantwoorde manier hun carrière verder te laten zetten. Te vaak wordt gedacht dat als een letsel niet te genezen valt, het meteen over is voor de toekomst. Bij sommige type letsels blijft dat zo, maar evenveel letsels zijn chronisch, niet te genezen, maar kunnen toch perfect gedurende een lange tijd onder controle gehouden worden. Prestatievermindering is een ‘nieuw’ en courant voorkomende klacht, waarmee de paarden tegenwoordig bij de dierenarts of bij ons op de kliniek worden aangeboden. De norm ligt hoger als vroeger en de belangen nemen toe. Mensen zijn dus vaak vroeger gealarmeerd. Het is vaak moeilijk om bij dergelijke paarden achter de exacte oorzaak te komen, enkel en alleen met een klassiek kreupelheidonderzoek. De oorzaken kunnen heel variabel en multipel zijn en vaak tonen dergelijke paarden
A regular screening of sport horses is important. In fact, you need to make an inventory of the health state of your horse. Any possible injury needs to be mapped. It’s an utopian dream to think that a horse will never get any injury during its career. Keeping that in mind you’ll have to live with the occurring of injuries. This doesn’t mean that the hore at hand won’t be able to have a sportive career anymore. If you handle you equine business well, you’ll manage to keep the horses working in a animal-friendly and safe way. Too often horse owners think that a injury can’t be healed, putting a cross over the future career of the horse. It is true that some injuries will never heal, but a lot of injuries are conical as well, meaning they can be controlled for a long period of time. Performance degradation is a ‘new’ and often occurring complaint. Horses are dropped off at our clinic with the owner saying that the horse ‘lost its will to perform’. The stakes are a lot higher than before and performing well became more important. Because of that, people are alarmed more easily. It’s not an easy task to determine the right cause with these kind of horse, the only way is by using a classic lameness examination. The causes can be variable and multiple and these horses often don’t show a

De Belgische parcoursbouwer Luc Musette, zit gelijmd aan zijn computer wanneer we hem ontmoeten tijdens de Longines Global Champions Tour in Monte Carlo. Op zijn bureau in de jury box overschouwt Musette de piste aan de Monacese haven, alsook de immense yachten. Met slechts enkele uren te gaan voor de vijfsterren concours van start gaan maakt Musette even tijd om samen met ons te praten over zijn 32 jaar ervaring. “Ik start met een blanco papier. Soms vraagt het uittekenen van een parcours maar vijf minuten, soms vraagt het drie tot vier dagen,” verklaart Musette. “Voor mij is geen enkel parcours identiek. Ik teken op basis van de piste”.

Heel wat factoren spelen een rol volgens de ervaren parcoursbouwer. “Overdag moet je rekening houden met de stand van de zon. Ook de omgeving is van belang. Hier in Monte-Carlo is er heel wat media aandacht. Daarbij moet elke sponsor zijn sprong perfect in beeld zien. Hierdoor dien ik rekening te houden met de koninklijke berg aan de achterzijde en de reflectie van de zon op het water van de haven.” Luc Musette is één van de meest gevraagde parcoursbouwers in de wereld. De afgelopen vijf jaar is hij een vast onderdeel van de Longines Global Champions Tour. Decennia heeft de parcoursbouwer er zijn levenswerk van gemaakt het publiek te laten daveren en de ruiters een gezonde portie uitdaging voor te schotelen. Zo is onder andere de Amerikaanse Reed Kessler één van zijn fans. Kessler noemt Musette’s parcours “subliem”. Hoewel de paarden en ruiters de spotlights wegstelen tijdens het evenement beseft iedereen dat er geen spanning of topsport zou zijn zonder de parcours. Voor Musette is dit ook van belang. “Ik denk alles uit. Er moet een verhaal in mijn parcours zijn, een spektakel, een mise-en-scène.” Musette is zelf geen fan van te technisch en moeilijke parcours. “Ten eerste vind ik dat een parcours fair moet zijn voor het paard. Elke viervoeter moet zichzelf kunnen uiten in mijn parcours. De paarden moeten hun kwaliteiten kunnen tonen. Elke parcours moet harmonieus zijn maar met enkele addertjes onder het gras. Indien je die addertjes weet te overbruggen, dan finish je foutloos. Dat is volgens mij ook m’n sterkte.”

Luc Musette is glued to his laptop when we arrive at the glitzy Port d’Hercule in Monte Carlo to meet the course designer par excellence. From his desk in the judges’ office – overlooking the arena of the Longines Global Champions Tour and the house-sized yachts lined up in the harbour – Musette is busy putting the finishing touches to the evening’s Grand Prix du Prince de Monaco. Earlier in the morning, he had been told that one of the key sponsor jumps needed to be moved because of TV camera angles, so it was goodbye to his carefully mapped out original design and back to the drawing board for the Belgian designer. With only a few hours to go before the prestigious CSI5*, it’s clearly one of those moments where 32 years of course building experience comes in quite handy. “I have a white piece of paper with nothing on it – and then I start. Sometimes it’s easy and it’ll take five minutes. Sometimes it’s more difficult and it’s three or four days,” Luc Musette says of his design process, flashing a smile. We’re sitting in the cool shade of the VIP area, and if Musette was feeling the pressure moments earlier, he’s now the picture of relaxed cool. “For me, course building is never repetitive. I draw a lot of inspiration from the size and location of the venue. During the day you have to be careful and think about the position of the sun. And here,” he says, gesturing out across the compact arena nestled tightly between the majestic backdrop of the palace-filled mountainside and the glittering harbour, “the venue is really small, so my options are a bit limited. I have to compose with a small ring in mind and really think about how the lights are positioned this evening when it gets dark.”

Luc Musette komt UIT paardenfamilie van vijf generaties en is de broer van Jean-Paul Musette, voormalig chef d’Equipe van België. “Hoewel ik uit een rasechte paardenfamilie kom was m’n carrière in de sport niet vooraf gepland. Ik reed heel wat toen ik jonger was en door m’n nauwe band met de sport ben ik uiteindelijk bij deze job beland.” Als Musette één favoriet parcours uit zijn carrière mag kiezen antwoord hij zonder twijfel de € 1 miljoen Grote Prijs in Rio. Hier verwijst hij naar de Athina Onassis horse Show in Rio de Janeiro, gewonnen door Olympisch ruiter, Steve Guerdat. “Ik ben nog steeds enorm fier op dat parcours. Het bood genoeg spanning en met slechts vier combinaties in de barrage was het parcours echt vanuit horsemanship ontworpen. De paarden hadden elke gelegenheid hun kwaliteiten te tonen zonder hun eigen limiet voorbij te springen.,” verklaart Musette. “
As one of the world’s most sought-after course builders and a key part of the Longines Global Champions Tour for the past five years, Musette has spent decades working at the pinnacle of the showjumping circuit, challenging top riders and horses and thrilling the crowds with his superb tests. Young talent and US National Champion Reed Kessler is one of his many fans: she calls his courses “outstanding”. While horses and riders may be the ones to steal the spotlight in terms of glamour and exposure, the sport would be pretty much non-existent if not for clever course designers like Luc Musette who consistently dreams up exhilarating new tests. “I build a complete story, a spectacle, a miseen-scène,” Musette says of his role. “I not only have to build a course for the riders and horses, but also a show for the public and the guests.” Known for technically challenging but very natural courses, Musette is not a fan of overly complex tests.

Toeval wil dat Nick Skelton ook een fan is van Luc Musette. “Luc is één van de beste parcoursbouwers in de wereld. Het is een getalenteerd man die op een paardvriendelijke manier een technisch parcours kan uittekenen.,” verklaart Skelton. “Je kan hem steeds aanspreken, nog een pluspunt!” Voor ruiters is het niet ongebruikelijk dat ze de parcoursbouwer aanspreken voor aanvang van de proef.
“First of all, a course needs to be fair for the horse. One of my main goals is that the horse is able to really express itself and showcase its skills, potential and qualities. The course has to be harmonious but with some tricky spots. That’s sort of my speciality. And if you can manage the tricky spots, then you’re clear.” As the fifth generation of a horse-mad family and the brother of Jean-Paul Musette, the retired national show jumping chef d’Equipe for Belgium, Musette says his career choice was a happy accident. “I wouldn’t say it was planned, but I used to ride a lot when I was younger and I was always involved in the sport, so it was circumstance really that brought me to the job.” “The €1 million Grand Prix in Rio last year,” he says, referring to the Athina Onassis Horse Show

It was horsemanship course designing. The horses could express themselves without pushing beyond their limits. You have to be really respectful of the horses. They’re out at the shows every weekend. If you put a really high and wide jump, for sure there are going to be mistakes on that. But that’s not what I’m looking for. I’m looking for something respectful and harmonious. It was only a 1.45 metre course, but the technical part was difficult.” Watching the world’s top riders interpret his work at all the biggest international events, does he have any favourites? Musette has high praise for Edwina Tops-Alexander and Ian Millar, but it is Olympic UK gold medallist Nick Skelton and Big Star that he rates as the most technically accomplished combination. “Big Star and Nick are fantastic. Nick has the perfect riding attitude and he’s an extraordinary horse builder.” As it turns out, Nick Skelton also happens to be quite the Luc Musette fan. “Luc is one of the best course builders in the world. He is very talented and gets good results with very fair and horse-friendly courses,” Skelton says, “and you can always talk to him.” It’s not uncommon for riders to talk to the course designer before riding a class. “It’s usually about the distance or – if the time is short – how they’re going to measure the time. But I always have to be careful that I’m not serving the interests of a specific rider,” Musette says, his eyes twinkling. Tonight’s Grand Prix course is sure to prompt a few questions during the course walk. “You have to give them one or two spots where they can win time, and that’s hard to do in a small venue like this, so I’m not setting a very short time,” Musette explains.
