The equestrian sport is evolving every day to the positive. Marketing and Media are more than often embraced by the equestrian community.
Onze hippische sport evolueert elke dag, gelukkig in de goede richting. Marketing en media vinden meer en meer de connectie met de hippische gemeenschap.
Together with Equnews we like to report the latest sportive news, as fast as possible. An achievement that cannot be done by the printed press.
Samen met Equnews proberen we steeds - kort op de bal - het laatste sportnieuws te brengen, iets wat in een geprinte versie bijna onmogelijk lijkt.
De nood is er echter wel om de verschillende modegrillen en bewegingen in het hippisch landschap tijdig en stijlvol in kaart te brengen. Een gemis dat zijn antwoord vindt in het gloednieuwe Equ.Lifestyle magazine. Ik hoop dat deze eerste uitgave u mag I do hope this release issue tasts for bekoren en samen met u werk ik more. Equ.Lifestyle presenteert met trots haar eerste fashion & lifestyle magazine. Het product van een zomerse avond, een passie voor mode en paardensport. Equ.Lifestyle plaatste ongeveer een half jaar geleden zijn eerste online BLOG. Vandaag zetten we de stap naar een gedrukte versie. Meer als ooit wil het magazine een antwoord bieden op de afwezigheid van een degelijk mode en lifestyle overzicht in de paardensport.
It is with a certain pride Equ.Lifestyle presents its first fashion & lifestyle magazine. A product of a hot summer night, a passion for fashion and horsesport. Equ.Lifestyle published its first BLOG about half a year ago. Today we take the next step into the world of the printed press. More than ever this magazine aims to answer the shortage of a proper fashion and lifestyle overview in the equestrian sports.

VOGUE is hét toonaangevend mode & lifestyle blad. Zonder twijfel is het paard een vast gegeven in de modeshoots van het magazine. De elegantie van dit edel dier staat centraal bij de weergave van klasse, kwaliteit en de link ‘back to nature’.

Classic & just a little sexy
Gudrun Patteet is one of the best lady riders of Belgium. She had been riding since she was a little kid: she was born between ponies and horses. This lady rider just turned 31 and that makes her one of the youngest riders in the Belgian jumping team.
This Flemish athlete focuses on equestrianism for 100%, but that doesn’t stop her from taking a lot of care about her clothes and the way she looks. She doesn’t mind spending a lot of time to make sure her wardrobe is in point. We asked her to describe her style: “I think classical and just a little sexy”. Gudrun loves the classical trenchcoats of Burberry which she combines with a purse and a scarf from the French brand Louis Vuitton. Her favorite shoes are those from Tods. If you see Gudrun in her free time, she’ll probably wear something from Superdry. Just like a lot of other riders, Ralph Lauren and Gucci are her favorite brands. She likes Gucci because the brand often uses a bridle to decorate their collection. Gudrun likes Ralph Lauren because the brand really fits her personality and style: classical, stylish and just a little bit sexy! If Gudrun has to choose accessories, she’ll probably wear something of Hermès, it is definitely one of her favorite brands. When it comes to belts, scarfs and beachwear, she’ll always prefer the French brand. When Gudrun is wearing heels, it is very likely that those heels will be Louboutins. And can you blame her? This shoe just doesn’t need any explanation. The heels of Louboutin are very comfortable and they’re very original, having a red sole. Gudrun really likes the colour red and as we know that’s one of the characteristics of the shoe brand. Gudrun has a lot of sponsors, but only one of them are in the clothing of fashion business.
The Belgian brand Deserata delivers jackets to Gudrun. “The jackets of Deserata have very nice details and they feel very comfortable. Washing isn’t a problem with these jackets either, you don’t have to bring them to the dry cleaning. I don’t iron them either”, states the Belgian show jumper.

Gudrun Patteet is één van België’s beste spring amazones. Gudrun is geboren tussen de pony’s en paarden. De amazone uit Oost-Vlaanderen werd net 31 lentes jong en is daardoor een jonge telg binnen de Belgische nationale springequipe. De Vlaamse top sporter focust zich 100% op de paardensport, toch maakt ze graag even tijd om zorgvuldig haar stijlvolle ‘garderobe’ samen te stellen. Klassiek met een vleugje pikant, zo omschrijft Gudrun haar kledingstijl. Gudrun is gek op de trenchcoats van Burberry die zij combineert met een handtas en sjaal van Louis Vuitton en een paar degelijke schoenen van Tods. Spot je Gudrun in haar vrije tijd dan is de kans groot dat dit met een ensemble van Superdry zal zijn. Despite the fact that Patteet gets a lot of offers from possible sponsors, she doesn’t always react to it. “For me it is very important that I can ride in the Sea Coast colors. That’s not always possible if you work with sponsors”. And we totally agree... you don’t want to look like a Picasso painting when entering the show ring!

“Vanity” is a word that got a more positive connotation in the past few years. In the past, people often equaled vanity to the word ‘snob’ or ‘preppy’. Today that’s not the case anymore. Today “vanity” equals ‘ looking good’, a big difference with the opinion people had in the past. “Yes, I would say I care about the way I look”, Gudrun says, “I think it is important to look good when I come out. But not only in the show ring, when I’m not riding I like to look good as well”. Gudrun even takes it to a next level: “Not only I have to look good, my team has to look good as well. I’d like them to wear the colors of my sponsor Sea Coast ”. Details are very important. Gudrun thinks it is a way of showing your respect for your horses, your team member and your stuff. “I wouldn’t consider myself a big spender, but Alain has a bad influence, if I like a jacket, he (owner Sea Coast) makes me buy the same jacket in three different colors. Alain really likes fine clothes, he has a good taste and I love to go shopping with him”. If Gudrun had the chance to design a piece of clothing herself, it would be breeches. “For the moment there aren’t a lot of beautiful breeches on the market that are also comfortable. I would really like to design breeches that are stunning and com fortable at the same time”.

favo-merken. Gucci voornamelijk door de afwerking met het paardenbit en bij Ralph Lauren kan ze veel van zichzelf terugvinden, klassiek, stijlvol en een vleugje pikant! Als ze vrije keuze heeft wat betreft accessoires dan staat het (paarden-)merk Hermès zonder twijfel voorop. Voor strandkledij, broekriemen en sjaals geniet het Franse modehuis haar voorkeur. Om het rijtje volledig af te sluiten, hoe kan het ook anders met de schoenen van Christian Louboutin! Deze schoenen hebben zelfs geen tekst en uitleg nodig “punt”. Louboutin is één van de meest toonaangevende merken voor comfortabele schoenen. Rood is volgens Gudrun een heel mooie kleur en zoals we weten is dat het uitgangsbord van dit merk. Buiten het merk Deserata gerekend kan Gudrun nog niet rekenen op een kledijsponsor. Het Belgische merk bezorgt de springamazone haar customized springjassen. “De rijjasjes van Deserata hebben een oog voor detail en voelen heel comfortabel aan. Wat extra handig is, deze jasjes kan je makkelijk wassen en hoef je niet naar een droogkuisafdeling te brengen. Ook strijken hoeft niet,” deelt Gudrun kort mee. Hoewel de Oost-Vlaamse reeds enkele aanbiedingen gekregen heeft voor sponsoring gaat ze hier niet op in. Gudrun is trouw aan haar thuisbasis en wil dan ook enkel rijden met kledij en kleuren die bij Sea Coast passen en dat is niet altijd zo makkelijk voor de sponsors.. Begrijpelijk, we willen allemaal wel gesponsord worden maar er gaan uitzien als een Picasso schilderij.. liever niet!
‘IJdelheid’ heeft door de jaren heen een positieve opvatting gekregen. In het verleden gingen we ijdelheid al snel gaan plaatsen naast het woord “snob”. Tegenwoordig ligt het echter anders. Vandaag kunnen we dit associëren met ‘er goed willen uitzien’, een groot verschil met vroeger. “Ik ben in een zekere zin ijdel, ja” verklaart de Oost-Vlaamse. “Zowel op mijn paard als buiten de ring vind ik het belangrijk er goed uit te zien.”

Maar ze brengt het een stapje verder. Niet alleen Gudrun maar ook haar team moet er steeds keurig bijlopen. En dit in de kleuren van haar grote sponsor, Sea Coast. Alles moet er ‘spik en span’ uitzien. Details zijn belangrijk niet alleen voor het uitzicht maar gewoon als een vorm van zelfrespect of respect voor je viervoeters, teammembers of materiaal.

Als Gudrun zelf een item zou mogen ontwikkelen of ontwerpen dat hoeft ze niet lang te twijfelen. “Er zijn momenteel weinig mooie en comfortabele rijbroeken op de markt. Zonder twijfel zou ik me dus toeleggen op het ontwerp en de ontwikkeling van een nieuwe rijbroek die zowel comfortabel als stijlvol is.”

When the seasons almost change, Stephan Conter and his team welcomes the international crowd at his place in Brussels, Belgium. Together with the LGCT in Antwerp, CSI3* in Beervelde and the Knokke Hippique the Brussels STX Masters are one of the most prestigious events in the world. No wonder you want to dress to impress at this event. Act like a VIP and dress-up. The weather is unpredictable therefor we choose for a combination of light, breezy clothes with a firm autumn jacket. We keep the colours neutral with a slight accent in the designer Michael Kors Bag. Not to much, but just ‘cassual chique’ is the way to impress at the STX Masters.
Wanneer de seizoenen bijna wisselen is het opnieuw tijd voor één van de hippische events van het jaar, de Brussels STX Masters. Samen met de LGCT in Antwerpen, de CSI3* in Beervelde en het Knokke Hippique één van de meest prestigieuze hippische events van het jaar. Je wil er zonder twijfel goed uitzien in Stephan Conter’s achtertuin. Het weer zal onvoorspelbaar zijn, daarom is er gekozen voor een combinatie van luchtige kledij met een degelijke herfstjas. De Kleuren houden we heel neutraal en sober, waarbij er accenten worden gelegd in de Michael Kors handtas. Niet bombastisch, maar gewoon ‘cassual chique’ is de kledingstijl tijdens de STX Masters.

Net als bij de eerste editie werd alles tot in de details uitgewerkt. The Knokke Hippique and its organiser, Stephan Conter do surprise again. This year the event offers no less as four weeks of international top sport in Belgium’s Monaco, Knokke. Just like last year’s first edition every detail has been planned and designed to deliver a sublime competition.

The CHIO in Rotterdam is one of the annual top events for the Dutch equestrian community. The top of the world is gathering to battle it out in both dressage en show jumping. A beautiful setting in the forests just outside Rotterdam, makes the event a true fairytale.

Guibert’s goal was a return to excellence, the original objective of every saddler. The quality of natural raw materials, purity of design, strict directives for each creation to its function. Bref the saddlers craft. The house of Guibert has an ancient know-how, evolving in time into an art profession at the origin of all leather goods. The Quarter Marker Quarter Marker is a stencil which,when applied to the hindquarters of the horse, reveals a geometrical alternation of brilliance (smooth coat) and matt (coat brushed back). The origin of military and constitutes one of the first examples of military warfare. A cavalry regiment, stationary and at a respectable distance, had to impress the enemy by the power it revealed. The Quarter Marker allowed them to mask the weakness of the cavalry, by highlighting the horse and giving the impression of vigour. This military heritage still exists in certain countries and notably in France with the Republican Guard. From the end of the 19th century to the present day, the Quarter Marker has been used by horseback riders for the same reason, to show off their horse! The idea of the Quarter Marker has now enforced the creation of high-end fashion bags designed by House of Guibert. The pattern returns in not only the leather designer bags, but as well in the beautiful equestrian scarfs. In 1999 werd in Parijs de eerste winkel geopend van Pierre Guibert. Pierre is een gepassioneerd ruiter, die een grote passie heeft voor mode met lederproducten. Zuiverheid en functionaliteit Het ‘Huis van Guibert’ is meer als enkel een zadelmaker of lederbewerker/designer. Het gespecialiseerde modemerk ontwerpt allerlei accessoires die onmisbaar zijn voor de huidige fashionista of hippische-mode liefhebber. Quarter Marker Dit sjabloon wordt toegepast op de achterhand van het paard en onthult een geometrische afwisseling van een zachte vacht en matte vacht. For the busy engaged equestrian, planning a wedding can seem a little daunting. On average it takes 250 hours to plan a wedding; between your early morning feeds, your day job and your weekend rides, where are you going to fit an extra 250 hours?! Fear not, here are some insider tips on how to plan your wedding when you have absolutely no time. Block out time The best way to get things done when you feel you have no time is to get as organised as possible. Your weekly routine may have to shift a bit to accommodate your wedmin (wedding admin). I suggest blocking out a few hours a week to sit down and delve into your wedding planning. This doesn’t need to be a chore; to some it’s the highlight of the week. After you’ve finished turning in your horse on a Tuesday evening, perhaps set aside 3-4 hours to decipher your budget, go through your wedding emails, research suppliers and book appointments. Think while you groom Grooming, mucking out and cleaning tack are all great times to do some light wedding daydreaming and decision making. Imagine your perfect wedding whilst you’re doing these tasks and it’ll help form your ideas for when you begin scouting suppliers during your designated ‘wedmin time’. Don’t compromise on time with your horse Finally, if you’re used to hacking every Saturday morning around the fields in your area, don’t stop this because you have wedding planning to do. I know that’s a really strange thing for a wedding planner like me to say but time with your horse is valuable. It’s your little escape to bond with your horse, put your mobile away and get some much needed fresh air to clear away the cobwebs. Do not let anyone encroach on that special time! During a championship pressure is at it’s climax not only for the riders and horses but also the people around them. Ben Maher, as most british riders, is known to be really ‘cool’ about it. When times get really tensed, he has someone to rely on, Sophia Gracida. In Aachen we met with Ben’s long time girlfriend to catch a glimpse of an intense competition from a couple standpoint of view. How do you experience the pressure of a championship when you are not riding but supporting Ben ? I think I am probably more nervous than Ben is! He is really calm and realistic at the championships. In general he copes well with pressure. Ben normally goes over the course numerous times, so I know exactly what he is planning to do. The moment he walks into the ring, there is nothing you can do but sit back and hope for the best!
Grote kampioenschappen zijn niet alleen spannende dagen voor ruiters en hun paarden, ook de entourage van de ruiters leeft op dat moment onder stress. Over het algemeen wordt van Ben Maher, net zoals over bijna alle Britse ruiters, gezegd dat hij vrij ‘cool’ is en dat hij goed met stress kan omgaan. Hij heeft dan ook altijd zijn vriendin Sophia Gracida aan zijn zijde. We ontmoetten Ben zijn vaste vriendin in Aken en vroegen haar hoe zij dit kampioenschap langst de zijlijn beleeft:
What would you say is the most stressful moment 43 for you? When he is riding to fence number one. All I can think off is “please Diva just jump clear!”. Whilst watching his round I feel like I am jumping simultaniously with Ben. I actually have to stand on the opposite side from our main groom Daley, because if we are next to each other we both kick, jump and pull each other, it’s a disaster! What are the last words you tell him before he goes in the ring? I just tell him Diva looks great! I don’t know if he listens to me but I try to give him confidence and make him believe! When he gets stressed, what do you say to him to try and calm him down? I just try to reassure him. I think every rider has their insecurities. Certainly when they are riding at a championship. The pressure and stress highlight them. I just remind him that he is a great rider, he has a great horse and he knows what’s he’s doing, that’s all. So far it worked, let’s hope I don’t jinx it for tomorrow! (read at the Championships). Can you tell us more about Diva, the mare Ben is riding? I actually love Diva, I do ride her myself you know. In Vilamoura, last year, she showed us her capacities. Ben was travelling back and forth a lot because he was competing in other shows, so I was left with Diva and my horses. That’s when I really began to ride her and we bonded. She is a nice but opinionated mare. So we have to be careful how to ask things from her. She is very fire-ry and I love it! Ben likes to say that Diva and I are twins and that’s

How do you feel when something as Thursday happens on the last fence? I think everybody, watching the live stream, has seen my reaction – unfortunately! (Haha) The first thing that came into my
mind 44 was; “I hope they are okay”. Then you have to wonder what Diva was thinking! He added a stride going into the combination, everyone was doing 9 and Ben did 10, so in theory he should have had a bit of room in the middle, but she took a bit of space to a whole new level on Thursday! Thankfully they are both okay but it’s not fun to watch that happening!

Wat is voor jou het meest stressvolle moment? Als hij naar de eerste hindernis rijdt. Het enige waar ik dat aan kan denken is “Diva, spring alsjeblieft foutloos”. Als ik naar Bens parcours kijk, lijkt het of ik samen met hem aan het springen ben. Onze groom Daley en ik kunnen ook niet naast elkaar staan als Ben springt, we hebben elkaar al vaker onbewust rake klappen uitgedeeld, echt een ramp!

How different is a championship from a regular show? Actually Ben treats them similar. A championship is obviously much more pressure, and it’s a team so he has to worry about the other three members of the team and not only him like at a normal show. You want the team to do well so when it’s a championship he’s usually more at the show all hours of the day watching, helping, supporting, while at a regular show we only go for his classes and then we go home. It’s not as time consuming! You ride as well. Do you have technical input in his course? Yes, we talk technical when we go over his course. Obviously, I don’t ride like Ben so I’m definitely not going to teach him anything new, but I think sometimes my opinion might reassure Ben of his own capacities. At home you work together. What are the daily duties? I have my own horses so that keeps me quite busy. Further I help Ben riding his horses. In the stable we both have our own groom. But we function as a team. Everybody is helping each other, making it work like a well oiled machine. And the engines?? Probably Daley, he takes care of us all! But as far as what I do, I think I just try my hardest to organise Ben and our lives along with the stables.
Wat zijn de laatste woorden die je zegt voor Ben de ring ingaat? Ik zeg hem gewoon dat Diva er super uitziet! Ik weet niet of hij echt luistert, maar ik probeer hem vertrouwen te geven voor hij de ring binnengaat. Ik wil hem doen geloven dat hij en Diva een foutloze ronde kunnen springen! Wat zeg je tegen Ben om hem te kalmeren als hij toch onder stress staat?
Ik probeer hem gerust te stellen. Ik denk dat elke ruiter op een bepaalde manier onzeker is, zeker als hij een groot kampioenschap rijdt. De druk en stress zorgen er meestal wel voor dat ruiters op hun best presteren. Ik doe hem er gewoon aan herinneren dat hij een goede ruiter is, dat hij een geweldig paard heeft en dat hij weet waar hij mee bezig is, dat is alles. Tot nu toe heeft dat altijd gewerkt, laat ons hopen dat dat in de toekomst zo blijft! Kan je ons wat meer vertellen over Diva, de merrie die Ben rijdt? Ik houd echt van Diva, ik rijd haar zelf ook. Vorig jaar in Vilamoura heeft ze ons echt laten zien wat ze in haar mars heeft. Ben heeft toen veel op en af gereisd omdat hij ook tijdens anders competities aan de start kwam, dus ik bleef alleen over met Diva en mijn paarden. Ik ben haar toen beginnen te rijden en we hebben echt een band opgebouwd. Ze is een hele fijne merrie, maar ze heeft ook veel karakter. We moeten dus voorzichtig zijn met wat we precies van haar vragen, ze is een erg vurig paard en daar houd ik wel van! Ben zegt altijd dat Diva en ik op elkaar lijken en dat we daarom zo goed met elkaar kunnen opschieten (hahaha), misschien heeft hij wel gelijk. Als ze kwaad wordt, laat ik haar gewoon haar ding doen! Hoe voel je je als het misloopt? Zoals donderdag op de laatste hindernis? Ik denk dat iedereen die de livestream gezien heeft, mijn reactie ook zag - jammer genoeg (lacht)! Het eerste waar ik aan dacht was: “Ik hoop dat ze in orde zijn”. Toen vroeg ik me af wat Diva op dat moment dacht. Ben reed
één galopsprong meer naar de combinatie, al de andere ruiters hadden negen galopsprongen gereden, Ben ging voor tien. In theorie had hij dus meer plaats moeten hebben in het midden, maar Diva bracht “meer plaats” naar een heel ander niveau! Gelukkig hebben ze er beiden niets aan over gehouden, maar het is natuurlijk nooit fijn als je zoiets moet zien gebeuren!

Is er veel verschil tussen een kampioenschap en een gewone competitie? Voor Ben niet, hij gaat op dezelfde manier met beide wedstrijden om. Tijdens een kampioenschap sta je natuurlijk onder druk, jij en je team vertegenwoordigen je land, dus Ben probeert zijn teamleden ook altijd zo goed mogelijk te helpen. Het draait om het team en niet alleen om jezelf, zoals tijdens een normale wedstrijd. Ben wil dat het team het goed doet, dus hij is eigenlijk de hele dag bezig met de andere ruiters van het team te helpen. Tijdens een gewone wedstrijd rijdt hij gewoon zijn proeven en dat gaan we naar huis. Tijdens kampioenschappen zijn we eigenlijk de hele dag op de wedstrijd zelf! Je rijdt zelf ook. Help je hem soms met de technische aspecten van het parcours? Ja, we analyseren zijn parcours vaak samen. Ik rijd natuurlijk niet zo goed als Ben dus ik probeer hem niets nieuws te leren, maar ik denk dat mijn mening Ben van zijn eigen kwaliteiten kan overtuigen. Thuis werken jullie ook samen. Wat is jullie taakverdeling? Ik heb mijn eigen paarden dus ik heb zeker genoeg omhanden. Ik help Ben ook met het rijden van zijn paarden. We hebben alle twee onze eigen thuisgroom. We werken echt als een team, iedereen help elkaar. De stal functioneert zoals een goed geoliede machine. Wie de ingenieur is? Waarschijnlijk Daley, hij is een manusje-van-alles en zorgt voor ons allemaal! Ik probeer Ben ook zou goed mogelijk te helpen en ons leven naast de stallen te organiseren.

Uit een nieuw onderzoek is gebleken dat het juiste aantal en type beddengoed voor je viervoeter een groot verschil kan maken. In feite hoe zachter je stro of houtkrullen hoe meer je paard zijn tijd al liggend zal besteden.

Het is belangrijk dat paarden langere periodes al liggend doorbrengen dit om zo het herstel van de gedane lichaamsbeweging en stress afneemt en dit is belangrijk voor het paard zijn welzijn zei “Christina Rufenener”, onderzoekster aan de Zwitserse Nationale Stoeterij in Avenches.

En deze werden telkens getest in een “groepshuisvesting” op vier verschillende ondergronden, op basis van de Zwitserse welzijnseisen. De Zwitserse wet vereist dat paarden een minimum oppervlakte aan stro of houtkrullen worden aangeboden in functie van hun lichaamslengte. Bijvoorbeeld : een paard met een schofthoogte van 170 cm zou minimum 7,5m² stal moeten hebben om zo van zijn verdiende en ideale rust te genieten.
Uit het onderzoek is ook gebleken dat “lage-ranking paarden” meer neerliggen in ruimtes waar alles geoptimaliseerd is , zowel het bedding als de ruimte.

Zonder het beddengoed zouden onze viervoeters maar zelden neerliggen. Het geven van een comfortabele stal is van cruciaal belang voor hen en vraagt van ons maar en kleine moeite. We slapen toch ook niet graag in een hard bed zonder kussen en donsdeken ? Hun studie toonde ook aan dat paarden liever liggen op stro of houtkrullen als op een rubberen mat, dit is geen goed draagvlak voor hen. In Zwitserland lijken de minimum wettelijke eisen voldoende te zijn maar toch is er een groot verschil als we iedereen als individu gaan beoordelen. Conclusie, rekening houdend met de sociale parameters zou het beddengoed voor “lage-ranking paarden geoptimaliseerd moeten worden en zou zo het welzijn van deze viervoeters sterk verbeteren.
