The main part of this concept, however, is not the tempo of music. Instead, we focus on keeping up with it. Imagine you go to a disco party, and your movements don't go well with the beat. Then your dancing moves will be off-track, in the

Mohammed AlShalawi on plans, inspirations & his own equation of success

M

YOU EXCLUSIVE FEATURE

ohamed Alshalawi is a DJ, born in 1986 in Tanzania, and raised in a couple of different countries around the Mediterranean Sea and the Middle East. Despite having a career in the HR field, being a music fanatic led him to be a self-taught DJ and producer. Having travelled 10% of the world, his love for art, philosophy, psychology and even science has influenced his choice of sound. YOU! Newsletter had the pleasure to interview him.

YOU: What inspired you to choose this career path? M: Music more precisely sound! Our ears are a very powerful tool. If it's used with the right sounds which range from words to music, it can create a high positive impact on an individual as well as society. It can heal emotions, energize the body, train and alter brain states, and not to mention, entertain people among the many other uses. I personally noticed this when I was at the peak of my depression that lasted for 22 long years. Whenever I stopped listening to pleasant sounds regardless of the environment, things would get unpleasant, harder, unenjoyable...and I would feel drained of life. Thus, my life goal now is to study sound/music and spread its impacts along with its benefits to as many people as I possibly can, especially those suffering from depression.

YOU: Are there any people or things that have helped you succeed and move forward in DJing which you are grateful to?

M: Yes, a lot of people have helped me reach new heights, made me do and participate in things I would only dream of. I am sincerely thankful for Faisal Alshalawi, my coach and my younger brother, my family for their unconditional love and their support with my career shifts, DJ Hany Elfuego and his DJ/producer community #Beatlife (60+ members) - They're my 2nd family. There's DJ Nour for being an awesome friend and an unlimited source of knowledge. She helped me in improving myself and reminding me of my authentic sound and discovering new topics beyond yet related to music. The General Authority of Entertainment had also helped in creating platforms that host local talents I also have a very important thing to clarify to YOU readers. A bit of desire + a bit of hard work + a bit of consistency and anyone can achieve anything and reach anyone. It is preparation meeting opportunity not the other way around.

A bit of desire +a bit of hard work + a bit of consistency and anyone can achieve anything and reach anyone.

YOU: So you are a music producer, what’s your process in producing a piece of music? M: Two years ago, it was a mess. I would wait for inspiration and energy to meet for a very brief amount of time to make something that lives shortly and fades into history. However, since DJing/producing became my main source of income, I decided to stick to a process I found the professionals were applying which is 3 stages of this order -

1) composition, 2) mixing, 3) mastering. Then, not moving forward until the current stage is 100% complete, and the results are convincing. Composition happens to be my favorite part because that's where the story is told and the expression of an emotion can be captured.

YOU: You produced a series of soundtracks called Nomad, such a unique and ethnic vibe, what’s the secret of your selection and the story behind it? M: Nomad is a culturally rich nomadic journey through a fusion of organic and electronic ethnic sounds that tells a story full of expressive emotions. Nomad was a mixture of inspirations that collided under unusual circumstances in a podcast mix. It tells my story of travelling around the world (just like a nomad travelling for water) finding and collecting ethnic sounds that reflects emotions in the most expressive way - indulging the listener into a musical journey.

YOU: Have you tried other types of DJ’s like mobile DJ, club, radio, turntablist...etc and what were they? M: I am mainly a mobile DJ since I began in 2000, fulfilling a diversity of occasions, ranging from private to corporate events. I also had a few brief occasions (due to studies) in the past where I played at clubs abroad. Locally, I had the opportunity to play at Mangrove beach club.

I would love to be on the radio one day! And just like many other electronic music DJs, I salivate when I see turntablists and would love to learn their wizardry sometime soon. All formats and mediums of presenting sound are of great interest to me. I shall do my best to explore all the other paths too as soon as I can.

YOU: You also support a community called #BeatLife, tell us about it and how you support it?

YOU: Who is the world DJ icon that you look up to and why? M: I look up to many depending on what they excel at. In hard work, definitely Laidback Luke, career wise Carl Cox, in geeky creativity, Richie Hawtin and Ean Golden. But none of them can beat R3hab as he is such a strong inspiration. I am very thankful that I was able to meet him in person.

M: #Beatlife is my 2nd family. I would support it whenever I can with whatever I have. It's the first of its kind and has the potential of catalysting many local DJs and producers to the international scene among many other economic benefits for the community on the short & long run. I help while I can but I mainly do marketing, planning, community moderation, and sponsorship. I am also open to volunteering for any local communities that resonate with my mission.

YOU: What are some future plans you would like to share?

None beats

My single “Heal” which is a mixture of ethnic and organic sounds with some electronic melodies. It is a story-telling Ney that will surely melt your heart along with some other tracks that I will work on as soon as “Heal” comes out.

Re3hab for being such a strong inspiration which I am very thankful to meet in person.

M: At #Beatlife, we are constantly working and creating multiple different platforms for local artists covering topics like music, comedy, art, education, and even revenue streams to support both artists and economy. They are all at early stages, but soon will come to fruition. All support is welcomed! Also another project in parallel is “Atlantis Of The Sands” which is a collaboration-based (collective and podcast) It is featuring a selection of fine local and international DJ/producers that I am very proud to be working with.

Q&A

Favorite music genre?

All music is good music when presented at the right time and the right conditions. But I do look for culturally, and rhythmically rich songs that capture an emotion or tell a story in the most expressive way possible and world music generally ticks it.

2

Best DJ concert you’ve attended?

This one goes to Tiesto in KAEC The positive emotional impact for me was bigger than the concert! I saw Tiesto and as a DJ myself, I saw hope. I saw my dream. At that moment that stage became my goal!

3

I like to Observe and Daydream when I am not DJing. Playing with my cats is another one. I also play video games a lot, minecraft being the most recent addiction.

4

Your most preferred time of day to produce and DJ

I am definitely a night owl since childhood!

5

I would like to collab with A lot of great local artists are on the collab list that I would be honored to work with! Including but not limited to: Hatoon Idrees Rami Mzayn Cosmicat Micah the song writer

Producing music always excites me,

and basically consuming everything about music theory and science, marketing, ancient history, philosophy, psychology, cultures of the east, spirituality, personal growth, and different kinds of art, on very long youtubing and googling sessions and hundreds of stacked up e-books that I easily lose track off. I keep my mind's curiosity always well-fed.

HEALTH FOR YOU

ISSUE # 24 - TempoNation

Does Bread Make YOU Bloat? Try the Sourdough. Some people bloat after eating bread especially the ones suffering from wheat intolerance. If this is you, don't worry! There is good news: not all types of bread have the likelihood of causing stomach bloating. How? The reason behind this is that wheat intolerant people are just sensitive to wheat, and most bread products in your local grocery store contain wheat as a main ingredient. Sourdough, on the other hand, can solve this problem for you.

What's The Secret? A sourdough bread is made by the fermentation of dough using naturally occurring yeast and bacteria. Due to this fact, the bread will be having a sour taste. According to nutritionist, Maryiam Zahran, "this bread is a great choice for people with colon problems caused by mild gluten sensitivity as it is easier to digest due to the fermentation process."
