What began as a small idea has grown into what Bethel Park Council President Tim Moury hopes will become a destination place. Moury said that in 2017, council did a recreational study of the borough's outdoor facilities. "It gave us a starting point and a longterm plan," he said, "a vision of what we could do."
The plan resulted in a realignment of the parks, with the Splash Park being the third step. Previous updates were made at Village Green and Millennium Park, and now the third phase is transforming the Tball field at Park Ave. into a Splash Park. Moury said the idea began as a splash pad, "but we wondered what could we add to make it better for the residents, so we toured facilities elsewhere."
According to Moury, the proposed park has 19 different water features and two components – one side for older kids and one for younger, with the younger section including a little lazy river. There is also a pavilion at the back of the park with a grassy area where kids can play. Council member John Oakes said in addition, there is a sensory area for children with special needs. "It will feature different amenities, and will have a quiet space, with no vibrant colors."
Other offerings include vending machines, and bathrooms and changing rooms. The park will be fully ADA accessible.
Moury said, "We wanted it to be secure, so it will be completely fenced in. It will be fully staffed, and there will be a gate and people will need ID cards to get in. We want to control the flow of people, with approximately 200 at a time." Oakes added, "There may be two time slots, morning and afternoon, so it can be cleaned in between." The park will be open for anyone, with a small annual fee for residents and non-residents. Moury said the staff is finalizing the operational plan.
The total project cost is $3.5 million. Funding came from two grants through State Representative Natalie Mihalek and State Senator Devlin Robinson; money received from the American Rescue Funds from the federal government; and fundraising events.
Oakes said the Splash Park is expected to be completed by October, with the formal opening then taking place next spring. Moury added, "It will be one of the largest such parks in Allegheny County. It will be a truly unique recreational experience for residents. It started as a small splash pad, but we want it to be the center of recreation in Bethel Park."

On February 3, 2023, a Norfolk Southern train derailed in East Palestine, Ohio. There were 38 cars on the train that derailed that day, 11 of which were carrying hazardous chemicals. A plume of black smoke filled the air which promptly led to an emergency evacuation order for those within a one-mile radius of the site. Toxic chemicals spilled into the Ohio River, causing water production to be shut down. Though most families have since returned, they are still feeling the effects in the air and in their water supply, causing them to continue to get sick. Some families are still staying in hotels and are unable to return home safely.
Volunteers from West Elizabeth’s, Calvary Chapel South Pittsburgh (CCSP), came together to see what they can do to help. John Serpa, of CCSP, explained that it was at a weekly Bible study and prayer meeting that the decision was made to help the citizens of Ohio. Upon learning that water was their greatest need at the time, they set out to collect donations of bottled water and on February 27th, the men took their first delivery of water to Ohio. They were joined by Matt Elfrink and Larry Hiles, of Milford Church of Christ, in Centerburg, Ohio, who made the trip to West Elizabeth to help with the delivery. Serpa stated that “with the church van and a pickup truck, over 100 cases of donated bottled water, prayer, and fellowship were delivered to volunteers at the Church of Christ.” Upon arrival, they passed out water to anyone in need.
Knowing that the problem was continuing to affect the residents they took a second trip to East Palestine on June 10th. Once more, they collected donations from residents and neighboring communities, and on that trip, they delivered more bottled water and passed out cleaning supplies door-to-door in the neighborhoods most impacted. They may be taking a third trip but that has not yet been determined.
Now in their 7th year the Bocce Babes have grown in members. These ladies play bocce every Wednesday morning at the South Park bocce courts. Bocce can be enjoyed at any age. The babes range from age 20 to 80+ years old. There is always much fun and laughter while getting out in the fresh air and enjoying each other's company.
The group started in 2016 and over the years have traveled to 3 different parks to find bocce courts. The Friends of South Park have put in 2 bocce courts and over the past few years have added picnic tables, umbrellas, and provide all the bocce equipment. We are all very appreciative of the park for maintaining the courts.

While planning a neighborhood yard sale, Natalie Scheiber, of Elizabeth Township, decided at the last minute,to include a lemonade stand, operated by her son Aiden. Even better, they could donate the money they earned to ‘Austin’s Playroom’, at Children’s Hospital, an organization that Natalie and her husband, Matthew have great respect for.
“It’s because of the services they provide for families,” said Natalie.
Austin’s Playroom was started by Mario Lemieux with a mission of comforting children who are staying at Children’s Hospital. They do this by delivering activities for the children to enjoy with friends and family during their visits. These include craft bags, ceramics to paint, board games, LEGOS, and movies to watch together.
At the end of the day, the lemonade stand raised $55 for Austin’s Playroom. When Scheiber posted on Facebook how happy she was to be able to raise the money, neighbors decided to add to that amount with more donations bringing the total amount raised to $200. Aiden was so excited about the outcome of his lemonade stand that he is anxious to do it again. Natalie said that the family is hoping to make this an annual event. Their plans may change later to include several dates but that is something they will have to think about based on the family’s busy schedule. For Aiden, knowing that he made such a large impact on Austin’s Playroom with his generous donation he excitedly exclaimed, “I hope they have a great time!”

*Thomas Jefferson High School’s Class of 2023 received their diplomas Tuesday night, June 6 to conclude a resilient four-year journey unlike most since the first TJ class graduated in 1960.
A total of 219 West Jefferson Hills School District seniors graduated at TJ Stadium before a large, enthusiastic crowd under sunny skies.
The latest TJ graduates are the first class to have attended the new Thomas Jefferson HS for all four years. The 64th TJ class were freshmen when the new TJHS opened its doors in August 2019. Seven months later, the world was tragically turned upside down when the COVID-19 pandemic closed schools and brought about nearly two years of remote learning, followed by in-person school while masked before a return to a more normal senior year.
Senior class president Shanice McNeil addressed the audience and two seniors were selected to speak on behalf of their classmates. Rachael Parsons spoke about “Writing a Story of Resilience,” while Kaylin Peters spoke on the “Power of the Present.” All TJ seniors had the opportunity to submit remarks for consideration.
Thomas Jefferson Principal Pete Murphy and WJHSD Superintendent Dr. Janet Sardon also addressed the graduates.
Four TJ graduates will begin military service by this fall and were recognized during graduation: Nathan Barr (U.S. Air Force ROTC), Che Day (U.S. Air
Force), Torrey Lewis (U.S. Air Force) and Nico McCullough (U.S. Navy).
The TJ Class of 2023 officers were: Shanice McNeil (president), Jacob Christian (vice president), Gavin Sweeney (secretary), Kiley Dorrian (treasurer) and Blayne Downer (public relations).
A total of 150 TJ graduates were recognized at the Senior Honors Ceremony for posting a 3.2 grade point average or higher, representing 68 percent of the 219 seniors who graduated on Tuesday. A total of 68 seniors earned Highest Honors (4.0 GPA or higher), an increase of 10 from last year.

1. Invite more color: Start with swapping out some of the simple elements in your bathroom, taking the opportunity to brighten the space with fresh new colorful towels, bathmats and even a new shower curtain. Choose light, appealing colors and/or patterns based on natural elements.
2. Decorate thoughtfully: Consider adding some easy decorative accents, like glass jars filled with cotton swabs, small soaps or garden flowers. A little goes a long way, so choose just a few of these accents to help give the room a sense of spa-like elegance.
3. Think attractive storage solutions: Include smart and visually appealing storage options such as a few pretty baskets on shelves for holding extra guest towels, for example. Baskets are also really useful, and you can easily organize them by categories.
4. Upgrade your seat: The Mayfair by Bemis Affinity is an attractive plastic seat that installs easily and is designed for a precise fit, so it never

moves after you install it. The seat also features quiet closing to avoid unpleasant slamming. Best yet, the hinges are designed to let you easily remove the seat for thorough cleaning - and when you're finished cleaning, you simply place the seat back on the toilet and close the hinge cap. Visit ToiletSeats.com for more options.
5. Refresh your windows: Consider updating how they look overall with new window treatments. One terrific on-trend idea is to install roller blinds or Roman shades in lighter colors. If you opt for blinds or shades made from thinenough fabric, they will still provide much-needed privacy while also letting in some natural light.
These are all ideas you can easily DIY - no plumber or designer required! - that will make a big difference for the look and feel of your bathroom, right away. Then you can relax and enjoy your room all season long.

Dave Esken's twin brother was not a match, but his sister, Kathy Martino, was. And as a result of her willingness to be a liver donor, Dave is on his way to recovery.
The family ordeal began 3-1/2 years ago when Dave had a cancerous tumor removed from his colon. His wife, Jill, said he didn't have any chemo or radiation afterward – the doctors said it was contained and they had removed it. He went back for tests periodically, but last June one of the tests indicated a shadow, and further testing revealed two tumors in the liver.
Dave, 57, of Finleyville, started three months of chemo with the hope of then having surgery to cut out the damaged part of the liver, and the liver would re-grow. "Unfortunately," Jill said, "the doctors said, 'No matter what we're trying, we can't get it to grow.' So he was looking at a liver transplant."
Dave was put on a list to receive an organ but had to be removed because an MRI of his rib cage revealed shadows. Jill explained, "He was so bad that they couldn't do a biopsy for fear that if it was cancer and they opened him up, it would spread." However, the doctors requested the results of a pet scan from three years earlier and saw those same marks. "So they knew it was probably some kind of damage he did as a kid," Jill said, "and three days later he was back on the list."
However, Dave was failing rapidly. His twin brother was tested but was not a match, and then the doctors fast-tracked his younger sister, Kathy. "She was in getting tested Wednesday," Jill said. "Friday night she got a call at 11:30, asking if she could be there Monday morning, they were going to do the transplant."
The surgery was performed, but issues still had to be resolved, as Dave twice had to be opened up to have infection removed. Despite the fact
that he once weighed 237 and is now down to 155, his wife said, "He's doing much better, his color is coming back, and he's eating better."
Kathy said she was blessed that living donation is possible. "I felt I was going to be the one who matched. Like most people, I believe you need to do whatever it takes to help out your family. Having Dave here and giving Jill hope was worth every second of recovery time." As expected,

Hospitalman Rebecca Gebadlo, a native of Sutersville, Pennsylvania, provides beneficiary care and expeditionary medical readiness while serving at Hornet Health Clinic Lemoore aboard Naval Air Station (NAS) Lemoore. Gebadlo joined the Navy two years ago.
“I joined the Navy to do something cool and earn my own way in life,” said Gebadlo.
Growing up in Sutersville, Gebadlo attended Yough High School and graduated in 2020. Skills and values similar to those found in Sutersville are important to succeed in the military. “Growing up, I learned that hard work pays off,” said Gebadlo.
These lessons have helped Gebadlo while serving in the Navy. Naval Hospital Lemoore was originally commissioned in July 1968 as a 67bed hospital by the Bureau of Medicine and Surgery, Washington, D.C. In May 2000, the current building was dedicated and in September 2017 it was redesignated as Naval Health Clinic Lemoore.
Naval Health Clinic (NHC)
Lemoore provides quality health care to more than 18,000 people at NAS Lemoore, California and NAS Fallon, Nevada to ensure the Navy and Marine warfighters are medically ready to fight today, tomorrow, and beyond. The command also provides dental care and medical administrative support to Navy, Marine Corps and international students at the Naval Postgraduate School, Defense Language Institute and the Center for Information Dominance in Monterey, California.
NHC Lemoore has a Fleet Centered Medical Home Port (FCMHP). The FCMHP is an active duty-only clinic located at NAS Lemoore’s operations side in the Hornet Health Clinic (HHC). Care
delivered at the HHC is provided by a Primary Care Manager and is focused on the operational readiness of the aviation community.
As a member of the Navy, Gebadlo is part of a world-class organization focused on maintaining maritime dominance, strengthening partnerships, increasing competitive warfighting capabilities and sustaining combat-ready forces in support of the National Defense Strategy.
“The Navy is important to national defense because we protect our coastlines,” said Gebadlo.
Gebadlo has many opportunities to achieve accomplishments during military service.
“My proudest accomplishment in the Navy was establishing a command run club,” said Gebadlo. "As a junior sailor, you are limited in the impact you can have on a command, and being able to establish the club made me feel like I impacted others more."
As Gebadlo and other sailors continue to train and perform missions, they take pride in serving their country in the United States Navy.
“Serving in the Navy means everything to me,” said Gebadlo. "I love this country and I'm honored to wear the uniform of my country."
Gebadlo is grateful to others for helping make a Navy career possible.
“I'd like to thank my parents because they pushed me to be the person I'm today,” added Gebadlo.

Q: When do I need cataract surgery? What are my options if I do?
A: A cataract is the clouding of the natural lens within the eye. Virtually all of us will get cataracts as we age. Cataract formation is usually a gradual process and vision changes can be subtle. Common symptoms include blurred or dim vision, sensitivity to light with glare, seeing halos, difficulty with night vision, and needing brighter light for reading. Often, the prescription of your glasses changes frequently, with diminishing improvements with each change.
By Aaron S. Wang, M.D. Ophthalmologist Glaucoma-Cataract Consultants, IncOphthalmologists recommend a comprehensive eye exam to have your visual acuity measured and your eyes (pupils) dilated. A special microscope called a slit lamp is utilized to view and grade your cataract. You will be evaluated for other eye diseases, such as glaucoma or macular degeneration as well.
The decision to proceed with cataract surgery is based on how much the cataract interferes with your vision and daily activities. There is usually no rush, but the surgery can become more urgent if, for example, you fail to have adequate vision for driving.
Fortunately, cataract surgery is one of the safest and most effective procedures. Typically, it is an outpatient procedure done under light intravenous (IV) sedation. Through microscopic incisions, your cloudy natural lens is emulsified; with ultrasonic energy and is replaced with a clear artificial lens. This artificial lens is called an intraocular lens (IOL). Your vision should significantly improve over the next few days as long as you use your prescribed post-surgical eye drops.
There are different surgical options, including upgrades that can be associated with out-of-pocket expenses. Standard cataract surgery with a basic IOL is covered by insurance. It is a fine option if you are comfortable wearing glasses for both distance and near vision after surgery. Upgraded options leverage the latest technologies, including laser-assisted cataract surgery, intra-operative aberrometry, and premium IOLs (toric and/or multifocal IOLs). These technologies deliver customized surgery, address optical irregularities of your eyes, such as astigmatism, and minimize spectacle dependence. You can choose to
An ophthalmologist will meet with you for a cataract evaluation, with the intention of learning your individual visual needs, answering all of your questions, and guiding you toward the most appropriate option for which you may qualify. In addition to the options mentioned, an ophthalmologist can also offer “drop-less” cataract surgery if you have difficulty instilling eye drops. Typically, regardless of which surgical option is chosen, the surgery takes minutes, you leave without a stitch or patch, and the improvement is life changing.
A corneal sub-specialist, such as myself, can also perform a number of treatments concurrently with your cataract surgery if you have other co-existing eye diseases. An example includes the latest in corneal transplantation (DSAEK, DMEK) for Fuchs’ Corneal Dystrophy. Another example is minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS) to lower your eye pressure. Combined surgery, when needed, provides convenience and the quickest route to your best possible vision.
Dr. Wang specializes in ophthalmology. He earned his medical degree at Stanford University School of Medicine, and completed his residency at Johns Hopkins Hospital Wilmer Eye Institute. He subsequently completed a fellowship at Shiley Eye Center, UC San Diego Health. Dr. Wang practices with Glaucoma-Cataract Consultants, Inc.

Tri State Neuropathy Centers, one of the largest neuropathy treatment practices in the USA is currently scheduling patients at their Castle Shannon office, located at 3757 Library Road.
Over 30 million Americans suffer from neuropathy and its debilitating symptoms of painful cramping, burning and tingling, difficulty walking, numbness, and even interruption of sleep. Neuropathy has a devasting effect on normal activities that most people take for granted and enjoy. Some of the most common causes of neuropathy are related to diabetes, medications, chemotherapy, and back issues.
“Peripheral neuropathy is a chronic and progressive disease,” said Dr. Michael Renk of Tri State Neuropathy Centers. “Left untreated, peripheral neuropathy will only get worse. It is best to treat it.”
Since 2013, the eight regional Tri State Neuropathy Centers have steadily grown and successfully treated over 11,000 patients with an advanced technology protocol that addresses the causes of neuropathy rather than the symptoms. The program is noninvasive, painless, drug-free, and is FDA-approved.
