creativity on a distinctive campus
Created in 1973, the University of Aveiro quickly became one of the most dynamic and innovative universities in Portugal. Now a public foundation under private law, it continues to develop and implement its mission to provide undergraduate and postgraduate education, to generate research and to promote cooperation with society. Attended by about 15,000 students on undergraduate and graduate programmes, the UA has achieved a significant position amongst higher education institutions in Portugal, being one of the top universities regarding the quality of its infrastructures, the strength of its research and the excellence of its staff. The UA can be characterised as an integrated Higher Education network, encompassing a range of educational opportunities – university, polytechnic and post-secondary. The University of Aveiro is considered a young university. In 2013/2014 it celebrates its 40th anniversary and reinforces its motto “theoria, poiesis, praxis” (theory, poetry and praxis) with the theme "a campus with ideas” which focuses on its diverse and inclusive community and its innovative profile.
"Strong research (basic or applied in nature) fosters the projection of the university and brings with it a greater demand for collaboration with industry, higher efficiency in developing national and european projects, and an enhanced capacity for attracting high level students, both national or foreign" Rector Manuel António de Assunção

Innovative Profile
The UA is a highly regarded institution of research led education, constituted by university departments, research units, polytechnic schools, interface units, and a vocational education network. Its integrated structure permits the articulation and harmonisation of the teaching and research environments, and enables the construction of individual educational paths, from post-secondary specialisation programmes to doctoral degrees. Teaching activities are developed in a research-based environment, and hundreds of national and international conferences are organised throughout the academic year, generating a dynamic and multicultural atmosphere for students and staff. Numerous products, companies, projects, networks and partnerships have been developed at the UA and several national and international companies have established R&D labs on the university campus to benefit from this innovative setting (Nokia Siemens, Portugal Telecom, Sapo). In 2013 the University of Aveiro was considered by the Times Higher Education Ranking as the world's 66th best university under the age of 50 and the best Portuguese Higher Education Institution in this category. This result was confirmed by the recent Leiden University ranking which placed the UA in 133rd position among european universities. In 2014 the UA was placed in the 29th position in the global ranking SIB Iber.

Promoting Science
The organisation of initiatives dedicated to the public understanding of science has deserved particular attention from the University of Aveiro, and the structures, programmes and projects organised in this domain play an important role in stimulating curiosity and interest in scientific activities, motivating people for study and research in all areas of knowledge. The University organises a diversified programme of activities throughout the whole year, on and off Campus. The UA also manages a Live Science Centre (Fábrica de Ciência Viva), located in a former mill factory near the Campus. It was set up in 2004 through a partnership with the National Agency for Scientific and Technological Culture – Ciência Viva, as part of the national network of Live Science Centres. Its goal is to attract the interest of children and young adults to science and technology.

Cooperation Profile
The UA is a privileged partner for companies and other national and international entities with which it cooperates on various projects and programmes and for which it provides specialised services. As a quality research institution, the University of Aveiro develops solutions and innovative products that contribute to technological, scientific, cultural and social improvement. Within this context, UA has a privileged relationship with the region, being recognised today as a centre for education and innovation, a trigger and driving force for regional development and wealth creation. As an innovative University and a pioneer in the promotion of entrepreneurship and knowledge transfer, and the conversion of this into economic value, the UA’s departments and schools, research and interface units are available to businesses, offering specialised services and promoting the scientific and technological competences which exist at the UA. Knowledge transfer, promotion of innovation and cooperation are currently fostered by various liaison units. The mission of UATEC, the University’s technology transfer unit, is to support the protection and management of intellectual property and its commercial enhancement, to promote entrepreneurship, and to support the promotion of corporate innovation by matching the needs of companies with the knowledge and skills of UA researchers. The business incubator, IEUA, promotes the creation and development of innovative business and technology-based projects, acting also as a stimulus for entrepreneurship outside the University through the Business Incubator of the Aveiro Region (IERA), a UA project together with 11 regional municipalities. A strategic programme for the development of a Science and Innovation Park has been launched, with the main objective of reinforcing the relationship between science, the economy and the quality of life in the region. The Creative Science Park – Aveiro Region, a partnership involving companies, municipalities, banks and institutional entities as stakeholders, will occupy 35 hectares, bordering on the main university campus.
The University of Aveiro has designed a Competence and Service Portfolio, the result of a thorough survey of the wide range of competences and services which are available across the university structures. This tool is intended to facilitate and strengthen the interaction between UA and external entities and it is managed by the University-Business Office. The professional integration of UA graduates, based on the development of teaching programmes in business and enterprise contexts, is also a priority of this institution. It is coordinated through the Internships and Careers Office in close collaboration with the Alumni Association. Protected intellectual property (accumulated values)

Aveiro and its Region
Situated 10 kilometres from the Atlantic coast, in the Central Region of Portugal, Aveiro is a city where tradition and nature combine with a keen sense of modernity. The city is located in a coastal basin bordered by the Atlantic Ocean and several mountain ranges. But it is principally influenced by a lagoon – the Ria – which gives a unique characteristic to this beautiful city and is one of the hydrographic wonders of the Portuguese coast. The Aveiro Region is now known as one of the most entrepreneurial regions in Portugal, with a flourishing and diversified knowledge-intensive economy coexisting with more traditional economic activities, such as tourism and the exploitation of natural resources. With a population of about 735 thousand inhabitants, the region benefits from an advantageous geographical position. Having all the facilities of big cities, Aveiro offers the quality of life of a medium-sized city, making it an easy and pleasant place to live and work. The privileged location of this modern and energetic city on the Portuguese coast and its excellent amenities make it an increasingly important Iberian terminal. It is served by a road and rail network that allows quick access to the main cities in the country (250 km to Lisbon and 70 km to Oporto), and inland to Spain (190 Km), and by major port facilities.

An exemplary Campus
The University Campus, overlooking the Aveiro lagoon, is a prize-winning Campus, renowned for its many buildings designed by famous Portuguese architects. Its buildings are purpose-built for teaching and research, administrative and technical support, and include many halls of residence for students and staff, libraries, bookshop, canteens, bars and restaurants, sports facilities, laundry, post-office, stores, bank, kindergarten – all this on one campus, surrounded by the natural beauty of the old saltpans and at only a short distance from the city centre. The Campus is today a fine example of how architecture and functionality can be brought together to contribute harmoniously to the history and tradition of the surroundings. The design and style of the University of Aveiro changed and enriched the physical aspect of the city, adapting to its geographical features (the lagoon and the plain) and preferring clay, a building material typical of the region which gives the campus its characteristic red brick look. The way the University is integrated in such a charming landscape constitutes further proof of how it interacts with its social context, promoting architectural development and increasing regional resources. The University buildings are bordered by the Ria and surrounded by extensive green spaces. The Santiago campus is also characterised as an “environmentally friendly” area: an exemplary campus in the way it preserves its biodiversity, supports the sustainable consumption of water and energy, and plays its part as a socially responsible institution. Since its foundation, the University of Aveiro has established a wide network within the region and now has two other campi, situated in two cities with strong industrial roots: Oliveira de Azeméis where the School of Design, Management and Production Technologies is located, and Águeda, home of the Águeda School of Technology and Management.
