Creative Media and Production BA(Hons)

Course info

Creativity, vision and technical expertise sit at the heart of the media industries, and this programme will help you fulfil your artistic ambitions and imagination. With the support of industry professionals and world-leading professors, you will learn about various aspects of creative media, from pitching your ideas through to post-production. You will work across a wide range of media formats and platforms, with an emphasis on contemporary digital production and distribution, developing the technical skills needed to match your creativity. The course utilises a mix of assessments to suit a variety of learning styles, including a strong emphasis on practice and creative portfolios.

In addition to providing you with the creative and technical skills needed to create and make your own media content, you will also think about the context of media production across the entertainment industries, including a focus on technologies and audiences. We will also help you progress your entrepreneurial skills, examining new digital platforms to help you network, pitch and fund your projects.

Online media platforms are at the heart of modern life. We make, create and narrate ourselves on social media through posts, likes and selfies. We share the music, films, photos and memories we care about online. Studying Digital Media and Communication not only develops a deep understanding about ourselves and the world we live in, but also the opportunity to advance our prospects of success in one of the many new careers the digital age has created in the creative industries.

This course aims to equip you with the core skills for successful digital careers. You will learn how to create and disseminate content through different platforms and nurture your creative talent through exploring current practices in television production, distribution and reception. Media Studies BA(Hons)

Course info

This course reflects the rapid developments in the media, creative and cultural sectors, placing digital, social and participatory cultures at its heart. Taught by professional and academic staff who are at the cutting edge of their fields, it is concerned with what the media looks like today, but also its potential and futures.

At the core of our course is a simple philosophy: working in the media requires us to be thinkers, makers and creators. Our course offers a mix of creative, technical and analytical modules, with a wide range of optionality allowing you to tailor the course to match your passions and ambitions. In so doing, we offer a range of assessments to suit a variety of learning styles and skills. There are opportunities to examine a range of contemporary phenomena, from YouTube fans to gaming cultures, thinking about their social, economic and political contexts. You will also make and create your own news broadcasts, podcasts and radio shows, magazine and newspaper reports in our industry standard facilities.

Media, Promotional Culture and Advertising BA(Hons)

Course info

Media, promotional culture and advertising shape our world in seen and unseen ways. The course blends industry expertise from public relations practitioners with world-leading academics forging new ways of understanding media branding, merchandise and advertising cultures.

To become effective operators in the world of branding, advertising and promotion our programmes seeks to build your skills as thinkers, makers and creators. You will learn how to write promotional copy, have the chance to create your own brand proposals and multi-platform advertising campaigns, while learning the political, economic, social and cultural contexts of those forms. Our course has a strong focus on digital cultures. You will learn about researching and engaging communities of consumers, participants and fans on established and emerging social networks and digital platforms. You will be encouraged to build a strong portfolio while applying your new skills in work experience and work placements, including optional placement years and third year placement options.

Broadcast Journalism BA(Hons)

This course covers everything from the hands-on, technical and creative skills in video and audio production to a detailed understanding of the broadcast industry and how to distribute content across different digital platforms. You will work with a wide range of industry-standard equipment and facilities and will be introduced to cutting-edge digital tools, resources and methods to conduct your own research and lead investigations.

Our course covers the skills needed to succeed across TV, radio, web and social media journalism, from writing scripts to directing video features, presenting your own radio shows and making podcasts. We will develop your understanding of the opportunities and challenges of broadcast journalism in a digital age so you can embrace the employment and entrepreneurship opportunities in a quickly changing digital media environment. Your programme includes full digital journalism training days during which you produce news content to real-world deadlines in a modern newsroom. Beyond the classroom, all our students gain first-hand industry experience during professional work placements.

Your future Our recent graduates have embarked on careers with a range of broadcasters including regional and national BBC working across TV, radio and online. Our Journalism degree focuses on the skills and knowledge to succeed in the exciting future of digital media. You will train and gain rich experience in different aspects of reporting: from researching stories and carrying out interviews to writing articles and producing social media content. You will learn how to turn the platforms you use every day ‑ from Facebook and Twitter to YouTube and Snapchat ‑ into a key part of your professional career.

Music Journalism BA(Hons)

The music industry is undergoing rapid change and this course provides the skills you need to succeed in this digital environment: from writing reviews to making compelling videos, radio shows and podcasts as well as learning how to produce and disseminate content across social media platforms. Our lecturers and guest speakers include writers and broadcasters currently working in the national media.

Our academic staff produce world-leading research into music and fan cultures, and they will help you understand the passions that drive the music industry, and why Music, and thinking and writing about music, is so central to our cultures and our lives. In the age of Spotify, file sharing, ever larger music festivals and YouTube-based music careers, our programme has also strong emphasis on understanding the changing business models of the music industry and of music journalism, teaching digital skills you need to carry out research of your own.

Your future Our Music Journalism degree has been the pathway to careers at radio stations, magazines and at marketing and social media agencies. This course is aimed at students with the creative vision and artistic drive to change how we see and imagine the world around us through the lens of a camera by making use of latest mobile technologies and different media platforms. Throughout your time here we will help build your knowledge, skills and capacity to utilise the vast creative opportunities for film making in the era of rapid technological developments.

You will learn to choose which stories are important, how to tell them, and how to operate the technologies to do so. Our Film Studies and English Literature degree offers you the opportunity to study an exciting mix of different disciplines, as well as introducing you to some of the most significant works of film and literature ever made. More than that, however, you will learn how to research, analyse, debate and create.

You will encounter a rich and varied range of artistic forms, from popular blockbusters and bestsellers through to challenging avant-garde works and shorter texts in newer, digital formats. Whether the emphasis is on silent, classical or more contemporary cinema, studying film always involves trying to make sense of continuity and change – complex processes that take place at the level of society, art, culture, technology and economics. The same is true of history, which teaches us about the connections, people, institutions and events that led to the society we now live in.

Our combined Film Studies and History degree gives you the opportunity to study two different but highly complementary subjects. We will encourage you to think critically about the ways in which our past and present have been narrated, represented and (re) constructed over the centuries. On our course you will also try your hand at researching and producing these stories yourself. You will apply your understanding of how our past shapes the present, of the role of film in creating the past, and the way our past shapes film today.

Television Studies and Production BA(Hons)

Course info

There is no cultural form of greater significance than television today. On this course, you will learn how to make television, to understand the contexts and ways in which contemporary television is made and distributed, and critically analyse television and its impact to inform your own creative practice.

You will nurture your creative talent through exploring current practices in television production, distribution and reception and have the opportunity to develop the necessary skills to turn your creative ideas for television making into practice and go on to make and distribute television in the digital age. Your future Film and television offer many exciting careers, if you have the right credentials. This course will prepare you for a career in the industry in a variety of roles including research, content creation, scriptwriting, camera, sound, lighting, editing, studio and location management, production management, producing and directing. Inspiring Global Professionals Media form our knowledge of the world. Our students in the Department of Media, Journalism and Film not only learn how media shape cities and global connections, they also have opportunities to explore these links first hand: we offer a range of excursion and field trips, which recently have included visits to London, Shanghai or Beijing and various events such as studio visits, screenings, museums, career fairs and international partner universities.

Changes to a course you have applied for If we propose to make a major change to a course that you are holding an offer for, then we will tell you as soon as possible so that you can decide whether to withdraw your application prior to enrolment.

For example, it may be necessary to make a major change to reflect changes in the law or the requirements of the University’s regulators; to meet the latest requirements of a commissioning or accrediting body; to improve the quality of educational provision; in response to student, examiners’ or other course evaluators’ feedback; and/or to reflect academic or professional changes within subject areas. Major changes may also be necessary because of circumstances outside our reasonable control, such as a key member of staff leaving the University or being unable to teach, where they have a particular specialism that can’t be adequately covered by other members of staff ; or due to damage or interruption to buildings, facilities or equipment.

Where your course allows you to choose modules from a range of options, we will review these each year and change them to reflect the expertise of our staff, current trends in research and as a result of student feedback or demand for certain modules. We will always ensure that you have a range of options to choose from and we will let you know in good time the options available for you to choose for the following year.

Major changes would usually be made with effect from the next academic year, but this may not always be the case. We will notify you as soon as possible should we need to make a major change and will carry out suitable consultation with affected students. If you reasonably believe that the proposed change will cause you detriment or hardship we will, if appropriate, work with you to try to reduce the adverse effect on you or find an appropriate solution. Where an appropriate solution cannot be found and you contact us in writing before the change takes effect you can cancel your registration and withdraw from the University without liability to the University for future tuition fees. We will provide reasonable support to assist you with transferring to another university if you wish to do so.

Major changes

Termination of course

We will only make major changes to the core curriculum of a course or to our services if it is necessary for us to do so and provided such changes are reasonable. A major change in this context is a change that materially changes the services available to you; or the outcomes, or a significant part, of your course, such as the nature of the award or a substantial change to module content, teaching days (part time provision), classes, type of delivery or assessment of the core curriculum.

In exceptional circumstances, we may, for reasons outside of our control, be forced to discontinue or suspend your course. Where this is the case, a formal exit strategy will be followed and we will notify you as soon as possible about what your options are, which may include transferring to a suitable replacement course for which you are qualified, being provided with individual teaching to complete the award for which you were registered, or claiming an interim award and exiting the University. If you do not wish to take up any of the options that are made available to you, then you can cancel your registration and withdraw from the course without liability to the University for future tuition fees and you will be entitled to a refund of all course fees paid to date. We will provide reasonable support to assist you with transferring to another university if you wish to do so.

When to apply

If this is your first (undergraduate) degree and you want to study a full-time course, then you’ll apply via the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS) at ucas.com

If you want to start your course in September 2021, you can apply to UCAS any time from 1 September 2020 onwards. Please make sure UCAS receives your application by 15 January 2021.

If you’re at a college or school right now, it’s probably already registered with UCAS. The best thing to do is ask your teacher or careers adviser to help with your application. Once you’ve applied we’ll keep in touch with you throughout the application process, so you’re up to speed with what’s going on.
