NAACP Launches ‘Diversity No Matter What’ Pledge for Colleges and Universities

The NAACP calls on more than 1,600 U.S. public and private colleges and universities with selective admissions processes to commit to the "Diversity No Matter What" pledge following the Supreme Court's extreme decisions reversing decades of precedent on affirmative action. The Pledge is an effort to ensure that higher education institutions foster environments mirroring the nation's diversity and increase the representation of historically underrepresented students "Let's be clear - Black America is in a fight for our lives The NAACP has been at the forefront of this battle for more than a century and we're not backing down," said NAACP President & CEO Derrick Johnson "It is our hope that our nation's institutions will stand with us in embracing diversity, no matter what Regardless, the NAACP will continue to advocate, litigate, and mobilize to ensure that every Black American has access to the resources and opportunities they need to thrive."

The NAACP has long advocated for policies and regulations at every level of government to guarantee a first-rate education for all Black students The "Diversity No Matter What" pledge outlines various steps that schools can take to create and sustain a culture of inclusion, belonging, and respect for the benefit of all students and therefore our society such as:

Eliminating racially biased entrance examinations and adopting a holistic approach that considers every aspect of an applicant's background, achievements, and potential. Supporting the matriculation and retention of low-income and firstgeneration students through outreach programs, scholarships, mentoring, and academic support services Recruiting diverse faculty and staff who can serve as role models and mentors for our students while contributing to our curriculum and research.

1 Million 1 Trendsetters Tour10 Cities in 90 Days

The 1 Million 1 Trendsetters Voice and Vision Tour is a 10-city campaign that promotes free national access to broadcast TV As the first 100% Black-owned and operated broadcast network in the United States, we aim to celebrate and raise awareness of Urban Trendsetters Television while highlighting the importance of Black-owned media for the Black community and culture. The tour includes a 12-hour "watch and win" telethon, as well as video drops and televised events from local and national Black expos, conferences, and festivals, allowing communities to see themselves on TV. We will search for original content from Black creatives and show hosts, conduct interviews with community leaders, spotlight Black business owners and entrepreneurs, and host career and opportunity fairs and networking events. Our goal is to showcase the power of free Black-owned broadcast television and provide a platform for individuals and organizations to support Black-owned media while promoting their own businesses, non-profits, events, and resources

Creating a welcoming, and supportive campus climate that values diversity, stands for equity, and advances inclusion in all aspects of academic and social life

Striving towards greater inclusivity by ending the utilization of legacy admissions which give an advantage to children and family members of institutional alumni or donors. Partnering with and supporting Historically Black Colleges and Universities, Tribal Colleges, Hispanic Serving Institutions, Asian American and Native American Pacific IslanderServing Institutions, and other Minority Serving Institutions that have deeply rooted race-conscious missions

"When a college or university commits to our 'Diversity No Matter What' pledge, that signifies a huge stride toward future insurance that every student, regardless of their race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability, religion, or

socioeconomic status, has an equal opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive at a higher education institution," said Dr Ivory Toldson, NAACP Director of Education Innovation and Research. "Protecting diversity within higher education and beyond cannot be about a political party or affiliation This is about our ability to correct the nation's original sin and level the playing field to maintain and expand our diverse learning environments to propel our society forward towards a brighter future."

The NAACP also launched a "Diversity No Matter What" petition for their members and leaders across the country to sign You can read and sign the petition here

DIVERSITY TRENDS

Bridging the Cultural Divide: African Americans and Africans in America

The African diaspora has resulted in a diverse community of African Americans and African immigrants living side by side in America. While sharing a common heritage, cultural differences can sometimes create barriers However, by fostering understanding and embracing shared experiences, African Americans and Africans can bridge the gap, fostering unity and a sense of belonging.

Understanding Cultural Diversity

The African American community in America has a rich history shaped by centuries of struggle and resilience Similarly, African immigrants bring with them their unique traditions, languages, and experiences. Recognizing and appreciating these diverse backgrounds is essential for building cultural bridges

Education and Dialogue

Education plays a crucial role in fostering understanding between African Americans and Africans Schools, community organizations, and cultural centers can provide platforms for open dialogue and learning about each other's cultures. This includes sharing stories, history, traditions, and customs, promoting empathy and breaking down stereotypes

Celebrating Common Heritage

Despite cultural differences, African Americans and Africans share a common heritage rooted in Africa. Celebrating this shared ancestry through cultural events, festivals, and music can create opportunities for connection and appreciation Joint celebrations of significant occasions like Juneteenth, Kwanzaa, and African independence days can bring people together and strengthen the sense of community

Collaboration and Partnership

Collaborative efforts between African Americans and Africans can be instrumental in bridging the cultural divide. Engaging in joint community initiatives, entrepreneurship, and advocacy for social justice can create a sense of unity and amplify voices Cultural exchange programs, mentorship, and business partnerships can foster meaningful connections and promote mutual understanding

Addressing Stereotypes and Prejudice

To bridge the cultural gap effectively, it is crucial to confront and challenge stereotypes and prejudices that may exist between African Americans and Africans This can be achieved through open and honest conversations, promoting empathy and dispelling misconceptions. Media representation that accurately portrays the diversity and richness of both communities is also essential

Building Stronger Communities

By embracing cultural diversity, engaging in dialogue, and working together, African Americans and Africans can build stronger and more inclusive communities This collective effort will enhance understanding, create opportunities for growth, and foster a sense of belonging for all.

Bridging the cultural gap between African Americans and Africans in America requires a commitment to education, dialogue, collaboration, and challenging stereotypes. By celebrating shared heritage and embracing diversity, these communities can cultivate stronger connections, promoting unity and understanding for a brighter future.

Black Dad and Daughter Collaborate on Children's Book to Change the Narrative of Black Families and Fathers

When her daycare closed during the pandemic in 2020, Kyleigh accompanied her father on important advocacy trips, notably for Ahmaud Arbery's case, which received national attention People began asking, "When are you going to tell this story, Dontaye?"

He founded CMG in 2017, after leading the PR department in the Fulton County DA’s office and working in television news for over a decade

Dontaye Carter, a pioneer in the world of Public Relations and Communications, has teamed up with his five-year-old daughter, Kyleigh, to challenge stereotypes and celebrate Black fatherhood in their new children's book, My Daddy and Me.

As the Founder and Lead Communication Strategist of Carter Media Group (CMG), Dontaye has made significant strides in elevating marginalized voices, including the families of R Kelly's survivors and Ahmaud Arbery His dedication has earned him international recognition, with three prestigious awards from the 26th Annual Communicators Awards.

Throughout Dontaye's journey in PR, politics, and social justice, his daughter, Kyleigh, has been his constant companion.

I LOVE MY

Reflecting on fatherhood, Dontaye shares, "There’s been no title that I’m prouder to wear than Dad. Everything that I do comes from a desire to leave this world better for my daughter than what I inherited. However, I’m not the only Black father fighting to protect my family and provide for them As Kyleigh and I sat down to write this book and she told me what she saw in me; it was the same thing I saw in every Black father I encounter day to day. We often feel unseen, unheard, and devalued, but this is an opportunity to add hope, love, and strength to a narrative that is often only seen through the lens of hip-hop and gang life " Dontaye's professional achievements include securing features for his clients in major publications like Time Magazine, New York Times, and BBC.

My Daddy and Me is a heartfelt celebration of Black fathers and their essential role as heroes in their children's lives. Dontaye and Kyleigh aim to shatter stereotypes and showcase the love, strength, and dedication of Black fathers, often overlooked by prevailing narratives When not working, Dontaye serves as the Communications Chair for the Georgia NAACP, actively participates in Kyleigh's school PTO, and contributes to the Board of Directors of CURE Childhood Cancer.

The release date for My Daddy and Me is set for July 28th For more information and to support Dontaye and Kyleigh's vision, visit MyDaddyandMeBook com This book promises to be a powerful addition to children's literature, spotlighting the significance of Black fatherhood and fostering a more inclusive narrative for young readers

Embracing Life's Second Act: Functional Fitness

Keeping Fit to Enjoy Life'sTreasures

One of the greatest joys but potentially biggest challenges for many grandparents is time spent with the grandkids Whether yours are toddlers or teens, keeping them entertained requires a level of fitness that might include everything from lifting a child to chasing them at the playground to competing in a round of golf For grandparents seeking an enriching and active experience with their grandkids, it’s important to engage in everyday fitness routines that can help:

• maintain muscle mass,

• preserve cardiovascular health,

• fortify flexibility, and

• bolster balance.

Functional fitness training can help with these goals.

What is Functional Fitness?

“Functional fitness uses multiple muscle groups and movements to help train muscles, joints, limbs, and nerves to all work better together for everyday tasks, like lifting groceries from the car, or outmaneuvering the grandkids,” says Jaynie Bjornaraa PhD, MPH, PT, who is vice president of rehabilitation services and fitness solutions at American Specialty Health Fitness

Examples of functional fitness exercises include lunges, squats, and planks “Lunges help improve balance and make the legs stronger,” says Dr Bjornaraa “Squats help strengthen the muscles used in sitting, standing, or lifting heavy objects safely. Core training, like planks, helps strengthen the lower back, hips, and abdominal muscles. A strong core provides a stable base when lifting, standing, or performing the chores of everyday life ”

There are many ways to incorporate functional fitness into an everyday fitness routine For example, online workout classes such as Pilates, yoga, or strength training can provide easy access to beginner, intermediate, or advanced exercise routines Gyms offer in-person classes plus access to most any kind of fitness equipment you may need to practice functional fitness, from mats and free weights to fitness balls and exercise bands

If cost is a factor in joining a gym or fitness classes, programs such as the Silver&Fit® Healthy Aging and Exercise Program, which is available through certain Medicare Advantage plans, offer no-cost or subsidized low-cost access to thousands of standard name-brand gyms and YMCAs, in addition to premium boutique studios around the country These programs may also include online access to fitness video classes such as dance, cardio, tai chi, Pilates, strength training, yoga, and others that teach proper form and technique Nearly five million participants use the Silver&Fit program to help them stay fit

“Functional fitness offers terrific health benefits for everyone, no matter your age or fitness level,” added Dr Bjornaraa “I encourage my friends, family, and clients to engage in some kind of functional fitness exercise every day to maximize the benefits.”

If you’re ready to try some functional fitness exercises but aren’t sure where to begin, you may care to check out a functional fitness exercise video called “3 Functional Exercises Using Only Body Weight.”

Dr. Frederic Bertley, COSI President and CEO, is inspiring young Joshua Carter into the science industry

Joshua, 13, wants to be an astronomer and wrote a book called "Secret to the Moon". When he met Dr. Bertley, he knew he wanted to work in the science industry

Joshua, a 7th grader at Columbus Gifted Academy (Columbus, OH), was excited to take part in his book signing at the number one science museum in the nation, the Center of Science and Industry (COSI) encouraging a national literacy initiative. He is donating his book to all his classmates and several libraries across Columbus, Ohio He wants to encourage other kids to write books and hopes to serve as an inspiration

“Kids make great authors because we know what other kids like,” said Joshua. “I think more kids should write books…they just need to be encouraged and told that it’s possible ”

His very favorite person and someone who he looks up to is Dr. Frederic Bertley, COSI President and CEO who gave him a shoutout on December 3, 2020, during The Color of Science program which featured Dr Kathy Sullivan, The First Female American Astronaut to Spacewalk This, along with support from other members of COSI, encouraged Joshua to write his book.

COLUMBUS, OH, -- Dr Frederic Bertley, COSI President and CEO, is inspiring young Joshua Carter into the science industry Joshua, 13, wants to be an astronomer and wrote a book called "Secret to the Moon". When he met Dr Bertley, he knew he wanted to work in the science industry

"It was really amazing to meet Joshua and hear about his aspirations," said Dr Bertley "He is a very talented young man and I'm excited to see what he will do in the future " "I was really inspired by Dr Bertley and his work at COSI," said Joshua "I can't wait to see what else he does in the future and hopefully I can be a part of it " "Dr Bertley is such an amazing scientist and leader," said Joshua. "He's really helped me to see that a career in science is possible for me "

Dr. Bertley has been a strong advocate for increasing diversity in the science industry He believes that Joshua's story can inspire other young people from underrepresented groups to pursue careers in science.

"It is so important that we have young people like Joshua who are excited about science and want to pursue careers in the field," said Dr Bertley "I am honored to be able to help him achieve his dreams "

Joshua’s dad, Stephen Carter, who help edit the book, felt that it was important to help Joshua find his literary voice in the world of science while maintaining a sense of wonder and imagination

AUTO TRENDS

AFRICAN AMERICAN AUTO DEALERS AND LEXUS’S COMMITMENT TO DIVERSITY

Toyota Motor North America (TMNA) has been at the forefront of empowering African Americans in the automotive industry and fostering economic equality. In celebration of Juneteenth, let's explore how TMNA, in collaboration with organizations like the Toyota Lexus Minority Owners Dealership Association (TLMODA) and Toyota Dealer Investment Group (TDIG), has created opportunities and resources for dealer ownership, paving the way for financial independence

embraces diversity, equality, and economic empowerment for African Americans As Damon Lester, president of the National Association of Minority Automobile Dealers, aptly puts it, "The role that black dealers play today is as pillars of the community "

TMNA is committed to cultivating an environment where diversity and inclusion thrive, supporting team members at all levels and fostering success Recognizing the importance of representation, TMNA ensures diversity is reflected across the organization, enabling team members to hold decision-making roles and contribute to the company's growth The automotive industry presented a new path to socioeconomic mobility for African Americans during the Great Migration

TMNA's dedication to diversity extends to its dealer network Through TDIG and the Toyota Avenues for Advancement Program (TAAP), the company supports minority-owned dealerships, identifying potential candidates through partnerships with organizations like the National Association of Minority Automobile Dealer (NAMAD) TDIG provides capital, operational support, and management assistance to qualified dealerships, including minority-owned ones. These initiatives foster entrepreneurship and empower African American dealers, addressing historical inequalities and barriers.

Leaving behind segregation and limited prospects, African Americans sought job opportunities in the expanding industrial economies of the North, Midwest, and West. Working in auto plants was a step forward, but African American workers aspired to hold larger, decision-making roles within the industry.

TMNA addresses this aspiration by empowering team members and promoting diversity within its leadership positions. Wilburt James, former president at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Kentucky, was committed to diversity and inclusion, understanding the importance of having diverse voices in crucial discussions and decision-making processes

African American dealerships play a vital role in their communities, investing and supporting local economies. They create a positive economic impact, allowing cash to circulate within the community, and serving as pillars of support By investing in these communities, African American dealerships continue the legacy of the Great Migration workers and contribute to the growth and prosperity of their neighborhoods
