CHAIRMAN’S REPORT The Grand Garden Party was well attended with many things of interest both to watch, and do, from a demonstration of sheepdog mustering up and down the adjacent hill, to ringing the bell with a very large hammer. How to do this was well demonstrated by one of our well-built members who rang it eight times in succession. The venue for the occasion was the homestead gardens of Lyndsey Saunders’ sister and her husband and our thanks go to them for their hospitality and our thanks to Lyndsey and Myra for their efforts in organising a very successful event. The Annual Motorcycle and Commercial Rallies were well organised and ran on the same day. Regrettably, one of our motorcyclists was involved in an accident on the run and has suffered some broken bones and our best wishes for a rapid recovery go to him.

inspection it was found that a new well was the only ROSS BUTLER answer. The good Chairman news is that a ph 03 352 3160 contractor who has helped with well activities in the past was engaged to do this in less than a week has sunk a 45 metre well and has water ready to be connected to the system and hopefully things in that area will return to normal. Thanks to the prudence of previous committees and treasurers, reserve funds are available to meet the quite considerable costs incurred. Meantime, work continues on the upgrading of the clubrooms kitchen and it is hoped that these alterations will be completed before the end of the month. Regards Ross

To round off a rather busy month, water supply on the property ran dry and on

SECRETARY’S REPORT Hi all, well back from holiday, great weather in Nelson and plenty of fish to keep me busy including three Orcas that cruised up the channel and back hunting for stingrays. Now its back into it. This month I will be attending the half yearly meeting of the National Excutive as your delegate. There are one or two fairly important issues being raised, like the notice of motion re online membership I mentioned in Feb Hub. I have contacted the majority of the 57 unfinancial members and would like to remind you that your membership will cease as of 20 March if the five month overdue amount is not paid to National Office. Thankyou to those that have brought their subscription up to date, your continued membership status is now secured. If you are in any doubt as to whether you have paid, the lack of the Beaded Wheels and Hub magazines is a good indicator. The opportunity to subscribe to the printed and posted version of the branch magazine

is still available and to the first members who apply will receive the Feb Magazine until I run out.

ROD THROWER Secretary ph 03 338 2320

Owing to the unfortunate accident during the Annual Motorcycle Rally I need to remind rally organizers of the suggestion to fill out an event safety check list. This tool is available as a guide to remind you of what to look out for when setting up an event, contact myself or it can be accessed from the Branch Manual. (Club Web Site) In the event of and accident it is a usefull tool to be able to fall back on if required. Our very best wishers go to the member involved in this accident and wish him a speedy recovery. Happy Motoring

PARTS SHED

WAYNE STOCKS Parts Shed Rep

Don’t miss out - check the board… The parts shed has been fairly quiet with everyone getting back to normal after the Christmas break. Some people must have spent their holidays tidying their garages as we have had a lot of donations to the club. My advice to members is to keep an eye on what passes through the parts shed as the good vintage bits don’t last long. Ron Percy has put a board up just inside the main door and we write on it what parts come in so you can quickly look to see if there is anything of interest to you.

SUPERB SUMMER GARDEN PARTY Words and photos Tony Becker

What a superb day! Enchanting country estate venue, our superb cars, picnic tables set in the leafy shade of trees on sweeping lawns, a super sunny day, all superbly created by Lyndsey and Myra Saunders with a merry band of member-helpers. The large gathering was welcomed by owners Maree and Peter Kidd together with bagpiper Anne from Leeston Pipe Band playing from the balcony above. Vintage era dress-ups paraded all around. Events suitably themed to match the day was an enjoyable way to launch into 2021 with hope in our hearts. Sylvia Bartlett´s cute candyfloss cart was popular as was the Hit-the-bell strength hammer contest, Tug-o-war and Sack races for all ages made for plenty of laughter. Afternoon highlights included retro fashion

parade and nail-driving contest. The day rounded off by sheep mustering on the adjacent hillside by Peter’s huntaway and heading dogs. A wonderfully relaxed day in the sun for all ages. Scrap Metal Drive Saturday 13 March (note: was to be held on 13th February)

This fundraising event has been organised to help fund the renovation of the kitchen in the clubrooms, which was originally to be funded by the 2020 Swap Meet, cancelled because of COVID-19. What we need is for you to collect as much scrap metal as you can, and bring it out to Cutler Park where it will be sorted and sent off for recycling. Anything metal will be accepted, but non-ferrous will be particularly welcome – old batteries, copper wire and pipes, alloy etc. Start looking around now and get rid of those now-useless scrap items and help fund the kitchen rebuild. Please don’t bring any wheels with tyres, upholstery items etc.

We will be accepting items from 9am until 3pm only. All enquiries to Colin Hey, Ph 021 883 807.

25,35, 50 AND 60 YEAR BADGES (To be presented at Branch Awards’ Dinner Sat 11 Sept 2021)

If you are eligible for these badges, please contact Leigh Craythorne (detail below). Members must provide the proof of having completed 25 years continuous membership themselves (as there were only limited records held at National level before the early 1990’s.) E.g. You may have a copy of your nomination form or early membership list; the branch has bound copies of the “Hub” held in the library that may help you; ask the Branch Secretary’s permission to search the Branch Minutes; or I may be able to assist, as I have copies of some of the early membership lists. Please attend to this and contact me as soon as possible as the badges have to be approved by the branch committee before being processed via National Office and forwarded to us from Wellington - delay may mean a wait until next year’s Awards’ Dinner for presentation. Members do not have to have been in the same branch for 25, 35, 50, 60 years – it is recognition for continuous membership of the Club. Leigh Craythorne, Phone 342 9110 email craythornes@actrix.co.nz Please Note : contact me please - do not contact National Office.

VELOSOLEX OWNERS GROUP ROYCE VOG 1 February 2021 Run It was “40 miles of Bad Road” for the VOG’s this month when Bob Kinnaird took us once again around the Red Zone of Avonside/ Dallington. Who said a Velosolex couldn’t fly, well I’m sure my machine jumped about 300mls off the ground when I hit a storm water manhole – probably the riders fault through not concentrating fully on the job at that time, instead of viewing the surrounding scenery (even that wasn’t very attractive). I guess the time is going to come when these roads are not going to be navigable for Solex’s and cyclists alike. There’s no way the Council are ever going to maintain these now forgotten roads.

A smaller turnout this month but still a good number of 11 enthusiastic riders turned up on 9 Feb on a somewhat doubtful day, the odd spot of rain didn’t quite dampen our spirits as we headed off on another momentous expedition into the unknown. Fortunately not a very long ride this time as once we got back to our lunch break at the new Richmond Club our bodies and bikes were all but shaken to pieces. Thanks Bob for organising this run – winner of our illustrious trophy this time was Dave Backhouse, he cheated coming back on Avonside Drive by taking the high road on the smooth cycle track along the river bank, and, what’s more, passed the organiser! A cardinal sin.

VETERAN REPORT

COLIN HEY Veteran Convenor Ph 359-8737 021 883 807

Ross Hayes 1909 Renault in foreground at the Grand Country Garden Party.

February got off to a very good start with the Garden Party on 7 February. Six veterans turned out for that event, including two Renaults belonging to Ross Hayes and John and Sylvia Bartlett – the latter I haven’t seen for two or three years, so it was good to see it out again. This was a great event on a perfect day – well done Lyndsay and Myra Saunders and the many helpers on the day. Veterans On Tour Jenny and I have just returned from the Art Deco veteran event in Napier, and we had a great time! We took our 1912 Wolseley up there and successfully completed six days of motoring, including two longish runs and lots of running in and around Napier City. Because of the latest Auckland Covid-19 breakout, unfortunately the Art Deco Trust was forced to cancel all of their official public events, but being at Level 2, the Hawke’s Bay VCC committee PAGE 20

decided to box on and run all of their own planned activities, with a contingency of slightly altering the way they were run if necessary to ensure gathering numbers and social distancing requirements were met. Fortunately, with a return to Level 1 at midnight on Wednesday 17th no added restrictions were needed. For some planning to attend from Auckland and further north, it meant that travelling down for only two or three events was not viable, so some of the registered 57 veteran cars and bikes failed to appear. For us however, all of the VCC events we planned to attend did actually happen, with the added bonus that tickets to the VCC formal dinner event (which we registered too late to secure tickets to) became available due to cancellations. We took our time travelling up to Napier, stopping off in Upper Hutt to attend the

Despite the Art Deco Trust public events being cancelled, there was still a full Art Deco buzz in downtown Napier the whole weekend, and some events carried on regardless without official input. Many veteran, vintage and PV vehicles were cruising the streets or left parked-up in the town, many people were dressed in period clothes, bars and restaurants were full, the weather was perfect, and everyone was having a good time.

British and European show there on the way up. This was a big event with around 600 vehicles attending, and ours was the only veteran car there so attracted quite a bit of interest. We caught up with a number of fellow Wolseley Car Club and VCC members there too – the day passed very quickly. After a couple of nights staying with family in Masterton, we arrived in Napier on Tuesday 16th, with the first events (shed and museum visits) happening on Wednesday. Thursday was our first out-of-town run to a small country school at Puketapu, about 10km out of Napier. We assembled at the Napier soundshell on the CBD waterfront where the cars were on public display for an hour or so before taking about a 20km route (including a couple of slightly challenging hills) to Puketapu. There the cars were left in the custody of supervised children while we enjoyed a lunch at the local pub nearby. The formal dinner on the Thursday night was

very, very good – the Hawkes Bay branch excelled in their hospitality with great food and entertainment, and everyone without exception was dressed in Deco-style clothing to add to the occasion. On the Friday we met in the VCC grounds with many other VCC vehicles, this time departing from there on a longish run to the Abbey Winery just south of Hastings for lunch and wine-tasting. We struck a perfect day – clear and sunny, but still relatively cool. Some amazing cars turned up, including a very early 4-cylinder 1905 Rolls Royce Light 20 (AX147) owned by Martinborough’s John Kennedy, which had arrived in Napier from the UK only the day before. Saturday was another public day in the VCC grounds, with morning tea provided. Again an amazing display, but with plenty of time to look at cars closely, talk to owners, browse through the branch spares shed, and even PAGE 21

Photos from the art deco.

the chance to drive or ride in some of the other cars on display. I got to sample the 1911 16/20 Wolseley belonging to Peter Johns from Havelock – a very well-sorted and fast veteran that was a delight to drive. The VCC events concluded with a breakfast on the Sunday morning – once again a relaxed event which was catered for superbly by the branch members. Jenny and I thoroughly enjoyed the five days of events. The Wolseley ran all week with no problems at all, and we enjoyed catching up with many friends and meeting lots of new people at all the events we attended. It was especially enjoyable to be motoring and socialising with other members from Canterbury, including Bruce and Shirley Shadbolt who took their 1904 L’Etoile, Ian and Rosemary Close in their 1903 Curveddash Oldsmobile, and Mike Hanning who PAGE 22

was motoring his 1915 Buick (formerly Alistair and Beryl Brass’s car). We even ran into Gill and Kevin Stevenson (several times!) who flew up to enjoy the event. All being well, we hope to attend the 2022 Art Deco now, perhaps tying it in with the Vero International Rally in New Plymouth a few weeks earlier.

Coming Events Designed for Veterans… Coming up, Look out for the fastapproaching Rear Wheel Brake Rally on 14 March. Entries for this close on 4 March and the entry form was in last month’s Hub. Also look out for the annual Dutton Run on Anzac Day 25 April organised by Malcolm McGibbon. More information and the entry form will be elsewhere in this Hub - there are several veterans already booked from elsewhere in the South Island for this event, and it’s shaping up well.

9-90’s REPORT

Hi to you all

February 9-90s run.

Well, what a day! 8am raining, 10am clearing and from then on sunshine and wind. 50 cars on our first outing for the year. George Nimmo, Jack Porter and Tony Whyte organised this. They had a nice trip away from the main roads. Very thoughtful they were. The first stop was at Amberley domain. From there we went to Wattle Farm, near the Glenmark Reserve where Tony Whyte made us very welcome. He has a big Vintage Tractor collection and he encouraged people to drive them. I feel sorry for the people who worked on them years ago, especially the Lanz Bulldog. By the end of their working day they would be knackered. After that we had lunch in the Glenmark Reserve. I was amazed how quickly people had forgotten the “circle”. Next time, if you are the first there for lunch, please make sure that we sit in a circle. It is friendlier and easier for Annette and me to get round for the raffle. A big thank you to George Nimmo, Jack Porter and Tony Whyte. MARCH 10 Organiser John Winchester Meet at Rolleston Community Centre at 9.55am. This is going to be a longer trip so please start with a full tank and an empty bladder. Look forward to seeing you all next month. FUTURE EVENTS Please check your emails or the club website for any cancellation of our future trips.

JOHN KUIPERS 9-90’s Coordinator

Phil and Jan Breading, 1935 Chrysler sedan.

Hi my name is Phil Breading and together with my wife Jan we have been VCC members for eight years. We recently started going on the very enjoyable wednesday 9-90s runs. We grab our picnic hampers and meet at the starting point and away we go. There is a huge variety of vehicles on these runs including; Model A, Morris Minor, Triumphs and even a Rolls-Royce. The runs have taken us to private collections of trucks, cars and tractors in the Canterbury area. As always a laugh or story to be told (the same one at times) and a raffle to finish the day. This month was a 60km (approx) run which started at the Peg Hotel car park and finished with a visit to a working tractor bull dozer collection in Waipara in North Canterbury. Our picnic lunch was held in the local domain to round off the afternoon well. Cheers Phil PAGE 23

MOTORCYCLE REPORT The twilight of summer is just about upon us, and with it comes long periods of calm, settled weather, just ideal for those after tea runs, or the quick blat around the (largest) block. PAST EVENTS

10 February 2021 – Motorcycle Noggin. A low key event, about a dozen turned up to add to the conversation.

14 February 2021 - Moped Run. Twelve competitors took to the road, travelling over Evans Pass to Sandy Bay to enjoy a morning tea of freshly baked scones and muffins. Lunch was at the Wheatsheaf, then over Gebbes Pass, River Road to Taitapu. The overall winner was Arthur Poll.

20 February 2021 - Motorcycle Annual Rally. A beautiful day greeted the 27 entries for this event. Run in conjunction with the Commercial Rally, the latter used the motorcycle route, timed section, and lunch stop. John Benn organised a great short and long tour, but in spite of meticulous planning an 8 or 10 km DETOUR was added in the middle of the timed section. It wasn’t there the Friday night, but was added overnight! The event was marred by the unfortunate accident that struck a competitor; as he went to execute a turn from Lineside Road into Revells Road, Flaxmere, a car towing a trailer attempted to pass him on the right, colliding with the right turning competitor. While his injuries are extensive they are not life threatening but he will be in hospital for a while. The lunch stop was the West Reserve just through Oxford, and the decision was made to abandon the rest of the run at that point. See elsewhere for the full prize list and trophies that were handed PAGE 24

CHRIS LEITH Motorcycle Section out at the dinner in The Barn Saturday night. Many thanks to the caterers, Annette Painter, brilliant salad meal and desert.

21 February 2021 – Annual Clip-on Rally. Alister reports that he had nine clip-on bikes which did a short run from Cutler Park to the Yaldhurst, around the airport and back. The Lady Rider was determined to pass the Velo Solex, this she did with much pedal assistance. One bike went on the back-up, but it regained a second breath to start after The Yaldie and make it back to the Island under its own steam. A lot of fun. FUTURE EVENTS

27th February 2021 – Fish & Chip Run. By the time you get this it will be a past event, so will be reported on next month.

5th – 7th March - Jim Toohey Rally. This will be an overnight event, a circuitous route has been organised to overnight in Methven. So far a very slim entry of six entries, so if you want to go please get in touch with the organiser, Kurt Ebrecht on 021 043 3707 he’ll gladly accept your entry up until 4 March. You might have to look out your own accommodation though…

10th March – Motorcycle Noggin. At Motorcycle Corner, from 7.30 pm.

12th – 18th March – National Motorcycle Rally, Masterton, hosted by the Wairarapa Branch. The main contingent from Canterbury Branch will have left Tuesday and Thursday to arrive Masterton Thursday and Friday. Some 28 people, five cars and vans, one trailer and 25 motorcycles will be on their way. The Rally proper ends Sunday evening 14th, and the Hub Tour begins Monday 15th to finish Thursday 18th with a final dinner.

27th March – Fish & Chip Run. Nothing

14th April – Motorcycle Noggin – more

planned at this point, so meet as usual at BP, Moorhouse and Antigua St, 10.15 am for a 10.30 am departure. If we do think of something well worthwhile we will let the motorcyclists know via the email mail-out.

information later.

Dutton Garage

ANZAC DAY MALVERN RUN Sunday 25th April 2021 This is the fourth year that this event has been organised and we are very fortunate to have a partner once again in Dutton Garage (est 1911). Unfortunately last year’s run was cancelled because of Covid restrictions but hopefully we will be luckier this year. The run will be preceded by a public display of the vehicles in the Darfield recreation ground carpark from 10:30am to 11:30am so please assemble from 10.00am when your day’s rally pack will be available. (Note this is later than previous years) Please park where instructed. The route travels on secondary roads (no shingle, easy veteran motoring) through the Malvern District and passes the War Memorials of Darfield, Sheffield, Springfield,(Springfield for the later vehicles) Hororata, Glen Roy and Glentunnel. (A shorter route will be in place for Veterans). Feel free to stop and pay your respects with a poppy at each Cenotaph. Distance is approx 50 miles (80ks)

presented to vehicles 100 years old and over. (VIC is required.)

The featured vehicles are those built during the war years and a Duttons medal will be

Lunch this year will be supplied by the famous Darfield Bakery and will be available at the Glentunnel Hall.

All club eligible vehicles are welcome with those produced after 1945 participating in a support category.

Come and join us on what is a very special day, remembering those that made the ultimate sacrifice and doing it in cars and on motorcycles that they would recognise. Some assistance is required and for your support please contact Malcolm McGibbon. 027 433 8047 or the Veteran Convener Colin Hey 021 883 807 Entry form page 29 this issue or online at canterburybranchvintagecarclub.org.nz

COMMERCIAL REPORT As the Commercial report didn’t make the last Hub due to technical issues, belated thanks to Don and Judy Bennetts for hosting the January Commercial Noggin, it was good to have a catch up after the Christmas break. Fortunately the latest Covid restrictions didn’t prevent the February Commercial Noggin, so thanks also to Graeme and Kay Shaskey for hosting at their place, it’s even interesting for me to have a look at the things hiding in corners of the garage that can’t usually be seen due to too many cars in the way. Details for the March Commercial noggin are still being worked out, date and time as usual on third Wednesday of the month 17th March from 7.30pm, hopefully should be confirmed before the Noggin but if you

NEIL SHASKEY Commercial Convenor won’t be there or haven’t seen me give me a call or email and I can let you know what has been sorted out.

Annual Commercial Rally The weather was great for the Annual Commercial Rally on Saturday 20 February, this was held in conjunction with the Annual Motorcycle Rally, many thanks to the Motorcycle Section for planning a couple of interesting rally routes and very pleasant stop for lunch, and thanks to those who made the effort to attend. As there were a few logistical issues along with an unexpected detour and other disruptions, working out a winner was impossible, so the trophies will have to stay in the cabinet until next year. Everyone who attended will get their rally badge, so we’ll have to leave it at a participation award for 2021.
