VERBIER FIRSTS
• VL: La première fois que tu es venue à Verbier ? Melody: Je suis venue pour la première fois à Verbier avec mon ami Richard Cobbing, un skieur olympique que j’ai rencontré lors de ma première saison de ski à Tignes en 1994. Il créa sa propre société de cinéma alors que je me lançais dans des études de cinéma et de sciences du sport. Nous sommes restés en contact, puis j’ai travaillé pour sa société pendant mon cursus universitaire. Nous avons un peu sillonné les Alpes et c’est comme ça que j’ai atterri à Verbier avec lui pour la première fois en 2001. Son pub préféré était le Pub Mont Fort, le premier endroit que j’ai découvert ici ! Je suis revenue un an plus tard pour tourner un film de ski, puis d’autres, et je ne suis jamais repartie !
VL: La première fois que tu as fait du ski ou du snowboard ?
Melody: Ma première expérience sur les skis, c’était à Tignes en 1993. En fait, j’y suis allée en tant que photographe de plongée : je ne savais pas skier. Le ski ne m’intéressait pas du tout à l’époque ! Je travaillais à l’école de plongée sous glace; je guidais les gens sous le lac gelé, mais en même temps, je suis vite devenue totalement accro au ski. Il ne m’a pas fallu longtemps pour que je me mette à filmer en montagne là-bas.
VL: La première chose que tu fais au réveil ?
Melody: Du café ! Je sais que je devrais faire du yoga ou de la méditation ou quelque chose du genre et je me dis toujours que je vais le faire... mais ce que j’aime avant tout le matin, c’est mon café et admirer la vue sur la montagne.
VL: La première chose que tu fais quand tu descends de la montagne ?
Melody: Je vais directement au travail. Ma journée de bureau commence dès que je descends de la montagne.
VL: La première personne que tu te rappelles avoir rencontrée à Verbier ?
Melody: Il me semble que c’était Colin au Pub Mont Fort !
VL: Ton premier emploi à Verbier ?
Melody: Mon premier boulot était de tourner des films de ski. C’était très amusant ! C’est beaucoup plus sérieux aujourd’hui, mais ça reste amusant.
VL: Ton premier choix de boisson ?
Melody: Un excellent verre de rouge.
VL: Ton premier endroit pour prendre un café ?
Melody: La Cucina ! Jo Eve m’a préparé de nombreuses collations pour mes excursions et on me met toujours un pot de miel avec mon café sans me demander. Oui, je mets du miel dans mon café.
VL: La première personne que tu choisirais pour aller en montagne ?
Melody: C’est une question difficile, car il y en a tellement ! Mais pour cette saison, je dirais Guido Perrini, le maître de la cinématographie, car nous pourrions mettre nos notes en commun pendant que nous photographions ou filmons les étoiles dans la nuit glaciale des montagnes.
VL: Ton premier choix d’appareil photo ?
Melody: Oula, difficile à dire car je n’ai toujours pas l’appareil photo dont je rêve. Pour l’instant, j’utilise le Canon 5D Mark IV pour la photo, le Sony FS7 pour la vidéo, et le Sony A7RII pour les deux. Mais j’aimerais bien avoir les nouveaux Sony A7SIII et A9II, le Canon 1DX Mark III et le Canon EOSR6. Hmmm. • VL: First time you came to Verbier? Melody: I first came to Verbier with my friend Richard Cobbing, a Winter Olympian, who I met during my first ski season in Tignes back in 1994. He went on to start a film company, while I studied film and sport science at university. we kept in contact and I worked for his film company during my time at university. We travelled the Alps a bit and I took my first trip to Verbier with him in 2001. His favourite pub was the Pub Mont Fort which was the first place I ever visited in Verbier! I came back a year later to make a ski movie and then continued making them and never left!
VL: First time you skied or snowboarded?
Melody: The first time I skied was in Tignes in 1993. I actually went there as a scuba diving photographer: I was not a skier. I wasn’t actually interested in skiing at all! I worked at the ice diving school, guiding people under the ice in the lake, but at the same time I quickly became totally addicted to skiing; it wasn’t long before I was filming on the mountain there.
VL: First thing you do when you wake up?
Melody: Make coffee! I know it should be yoga or meditation or something along those lines and I keep promising myself I will… but I simply love my morning coffee and mountain view first thing.
VL: First thing you do when you come off the mountain?
Melody: Go straight to work. My office day begins when I come off the mountain.
VL: First person you remember meeting in Verbier?
Melody: I think it was Colin at the Pub Mont Fort !
VL: First job in Verbier?
Melody: My first job was making ski movies. It was a lot of fun! It’s a lot more serious these days – but still fun.
VL: First choice of drink?
Melody: A very good glass of red.
VL: First place for coffee?
Melody: La Cucina! Jo Eve has prepared many a snack for me on hikes and a jar of honey is always put in front of me with my coffee without asking. Yes, I take honey in my coffee.
VL: First person you would choose to hang out with on the mountain?
Melody: Now that’s such a tough question as there are so many! But for this season I will have to say Guido Perrini, the master of cinematography, as we will be able to combine notes while we are photographing/filming the stars in the cold up the mountain at night.
VL: First choice of camera?
Melody: Ooh, that’s a tough one, as I still don’t have the camera I really want. At the moment I shoot stills on the Canon 5D Mark IV and film on the Sony FS7, and have the Sony A7RII for a mix of both. But I would love to get the new Sony A7SIII, Sony A9II, the Canon 1DX Mark III and the Canon EOSR6. Hmmm.

• VL: Ton premier autre choix d’emploi ? Melody: Dans l’environnement ou l’humanitaire. Cela dit, je n’arrêterai jamais de faire de la photo et des films. Mais en combinant les deux...
VL: La première personne que tu choisirais de photographier ?
Melody: J’aimerais réaliser des photos de William Winram en plongée libre aux côtés du grand requin blanc. J’ai commencé à faire de l’apnée et à filmer avec lui l’an dernier.
• VL:First other choice of work? Melody: Environmental/humanitarian work. But I’ll never stop doing photography and filming. Combining the two though…
VL: First person you would choose to photograph?
Melody: I would like to shoot photos of William Winram freediving with the great white shark. I started freediving and filming with him last year.
