Biblical Literacy

Veritas seeks to shape our students’ thinking through scripture both by understanding biblical content and through a deeper awareness of its meaning and ethical application. We believe that our students’ minds are informed and fashioned through Christian studies and by mastering core competencies of the Bible.

Classical Foundation

Veritas is committed to a classical pedagogy to develop our students’ intellectual abilities and assist them to acquire the skills for good scholarship. The principles of classical thought inform and guide the school in its curricular aims to prepare our students for success beyond Veritas.

Intentional Engagement

Veritas values providing a variety of engagement opportunities, both curricular and co-curricular, for the development of each student. The classroom, the playing field, travel exposure, fine arts integration, and community service are all part of the laboratory of learning for Veritas students.

Welcome Back from the Head of School

Welcome Back from the Head of School

Dear Veritas Families,

I am delighted to welcome you to this new school year at Veritas Christian Academy! Our faculty and staff have been preparing diligently during the summer, and we eagerly await the first day of school. My wife Claire and I are delighted to be part of this wonderful community, and our three girls are thrilled to begin this school year as Veritas Rams!

Within the classroom, our growing STEAM and performing arts programs will continue to provide engaging educational opportunities for our students. Beyond the classroom, we are excited for our students to enjoy the new campus enhancements, including the turfed playground and additional outdoor learning spaces.

This year our theme is “Choose JOY,” where JOY stands for “Jesus, Others, Yourself.” Indeed, when we prioritize Jesus and others first, we live out the greatest commandment to love God and our neighbors. By keeping our eyes on Jesus and others, instead of focusing only on ourselves, we will experience true joy. This is the Veritas Way!

Together, we will further strengthen the Christ-centered foundation at Veritas so that our children are prepared to succeed and thrive in life. As the faculty and staff at Veritas, we are thrilled to be your fellow partners in this great calling of Christian education. Collectively, we will “Choose JOY” and embark on a fantastic school year.

Best,

Jenna Wright will be looping with her third grade class from last year and will be moving into our Fourth Grade classroom. She is excited to help our lower school students get prepared for Veritas’ middle school and to have the opportunity to teach her previous students!

Thema Harris will be moving departments from Lower School to Early Education. She is excited to help our Kindergarteners build the tools that they need as they move from our Early Education department into Lower School at First Grade.

Cynthia Yu

Second Grade

With a larger Second Grade level, Cynthia Yu will graciously step away from teaching First Grade and will be moving into one of the two Second Grade classes at Veritas. Undoubtedly, there will be students who will end up looping with Mrs. Yu who were previously in her class for the 2021-22 Academic Year. She is looking forward to welcoming those students among other potentially new faces in her class this coming academic year.

STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics)

Joy Jones will once again lead our students in Veritas’ STEAM program. As a part of the 2018-2023 Strategic Plan, Veritas made a goal of beginning, implementing, and continuing a robust STEAM program as a goal to enhance the school’s programs and curriculum. She stepped into this role beginning the 2018-19 Academic Year but due to the pandemic, the program was put on hold. She is excited to revive the program for this coming year!

THE PLAYGROUND THE PLAYGROUND

February of this year, many members of the Veritas community gathered on a brisk and frigid evening at Evelyn’s Park. The Veritas community had been enjoying a wonderful 2021-2022 Academic Year with much normalcy returning to daily school activities. In addition to the everyday activities on campus, there was a reviving of the many community activities which give Veritas that very familial atmosphere. This gathering, Veritas’ Annual Auction Gala, is always a fun event that helps the community raise the necessary funding for many campus improvement projects.

University after the church decided to donate the land prior to dissolving. In 2016, Veritas was able to finalize the purchase of the property and become a staple part of the community landscape.

With over four acres of land and over 40,000 square feet of buildings, the school leadership made it a priority to improve the campus to match the quality of the education experience that the school was already providing to its students at that time as well as enhance and beautify

For over a decade since its inception, Veritas leased our current campus location from a local church body to host classes throughout the week. As the existence of the church drew to an end, there arose an opportunity for the school to secure the campus and set up roots of permanence in Bellaire by purchasing the property from Houston Baptist

the campus to be aesthetically pleasing. Since that time, Veritas’ Annual Auction Gala provided the means to make this aspiration possible with completed projects such as The Green, the Raad Learning Center, and most recently, Foundation Hall.

As the Foundation Hall project was completed early in the 2021-2022 Academic Year, the leadership’s eye turned toward the many outdoor learning spaces throughout the campus. With the onset of the COVID pandemic in 2020, many educational institutions realized the great value

UNDER THE OAKS UNDER THE OAKS

of their outdoor learning spaces. These spaces not only provided a reprieve from being inside, but in addition, even prior to the pandemic much of the educational research found that outdoor learning spaces provided unique educational opportunities for students.

With this in mind, two very specific spaces came to the forefront - the playground and Under the Oaks. At the start of the 2022-2023 Academic Year, these two spaces will be newly revamped for Veritas students to enjoy the great outdoors and the learning opportunities that come

from being outside. The playground surface has been modernized by replacing wooden mulch surfacing with turf throughout. There was also expansion as the entire playground area received the turf treatment providing more play and running spaces. Additionally, the removal of the ornamental gate surrounding the playground connects the outdoor space between the playground, The Green, and the blacktop. Lastly, play apparatuses were added (two spinners) and large outdoor freeplay blocks which Veritas students can enjoy during their recess!

Academic Year Theme

JESUS OTHERS YOURSELF

The theme for this academic year brings us to the mindset that all Christians should follow which Jesus emulated for His followers. The Apostle Paul speaks of this specific way of thinking and doing in his letter to the Church in Philippi.

In Philippians 2:1-11, Paul describes the mindset of humility and of putting others’ needs before your own. He urges all followers of Christ to do what Jesus Himself has shown to us throughout His life on earth and inevitably through His sacrificial death on the cross. This is the theme for our entire school community this year.

Additionally, this theme touches on two specific aspects of The Veritas Way, which Veritas enstills in its students for the purpose of character development. The two statements are:

Lead by Serving Consider Others First

So this Academic Year, our school community will Choose JOY! From our faculty and staff all the way to our students, we want everyone to put Jesus first, others next, and lastly, themselves.

We look forward to seeing our school community walking out this theme on a daily basis as we choose to emulate Jesus.

STEAM and Other Academic Programming

Last Academic Year, Veritas opened up the Design Thinking Lab. This year the same space will host the return of our STEAM Program. This academic program is part of the strategic initiatives which were outlined in Veritas’ 2018-2023 Strategic Plan. The STEAM Program was first instituted the beginning of the 2018 Academic Year but the program was placed on hiatus due to the global coronavirus pandemic as we made changes to our educational programming.

This year, we are thrilled to bring the STEAM Program back, and that Joy Jones will take the program to the next level. STEAM is available for Veritas students in first through eighth grades. Be on the lookout to hear all the exciting things your children will be involved in this year with the reintroduction of STEAM.

Fine arts is an essential component in the life of a Veritas student that various areas of the arts are incorporated directly into the weekly curricular program from visual arts, choir, band, and music and movement for our early learners. One of the premier programs that Veritas offers our students is the Veritas Conservatory of Music (VCM). This program provides students with an optional addition to their fine arts repertoire, having the ability to choose to learn the following instruments: violin, viola, cello, piano, or voice. The VCM offers students a combination of both private lessons and ensemble classes with professional musicians as their instructors. Students will have an intellectual understanding of the theoretical, historical, and stylistic aspects of musical practice, and relate each of those things to the vast literature of music which will provide our students with the highest level possible of technical and artistic achievement in performance.

Each year, donations made to The Veritas Fund help supplement the cost of providing an invaluable education to each student. Tuition alone does not cover the full cost of our operations. Donations to Veritas play a critical role in providing the best educational opportunities for our students. The Veritas Fund is a vehicle that provides our families with the opportunity to give in various ways - cash or check, stocks and mutual funds, and through non-liquid assets - which fit their lifestyle and philanthropic goals. What Would Jesus Do

For this year’s chapel theme, our community will be going back to the basics of our Christianity. The literal definition of the term Christian is “little Christ,” and though the term was initially used by those outside of the Christian faith to mock the early followers of Jesus, it is a term that truly emulates what our faith walk should look like - a miniature version of Christ. As followers of Jesus, it is our pursuit to look like our Savior, to walk the walk that He walked in his short life on earth, and to let others catch a glimpse of Christ in our daily lives. The best way to do that is to gain a greater understanding of who Jesus Christ is and the characteristics He displayed through his earthly life as evidenced in the scriptures.

Additional notes regarding chapel this year. Parents are invited and encouraged to participate in our chapels this academic year. Please see the time slot for your child’s chapel service below:

Middle School (5th-8th grades) - 8:05-8:35 a.m.

Chapel Buddies Program and All-School Chapels return for the 2022-2023 Academic Year! Veritas will be bringing back the beloved Chapel Buddies Program and All-School Chapels where students in lower grades will be paired up with students in higher grade levels. This intentional time of interaction between students throughout our entire school community serves to bring unity within our community, build opportunities for potential mentorship for our older students, and just to allow our students to hang out together after our AllSchool Chapels!

Chapel Theme
This year’s chapel theme of W. W. J. D. (What Would Jesus Do) will walk through the life of Jesus as shown in the gospel accounts of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. This journey will examine the varying characteristics of Christ that we, his followers, can learn and display within our own earthly lives as we seek to ultimately glorify God and make Him known throughout the world.
