German Car Day 2009 - Northam 26th July There will be showbags containing information about Northam, a raffle ticket, and various promotional items appealing to lovers of any German car.

We are pretty laid back in our definition of "German Cars". Our definition includes all cars marketed under a German brand name (wherever designed or built), and also all cars designed or manufactured in Germany.
Adjacent to Bernard Park, the Porsche Club will be staging a motorkhana. The Shire of Northam will be arranging some other activities for the day. Our thanks to the Shire of Northam for its support. Jeremy Ludlow President - Mercedes-Benz Car Club of WA (Inc)
VW CLUB OF WA (INC) MEMBERS As usual we are leaving from our normal departure point Centrepoint Midland (see map) and going to Northam. This year it is the same departure point as the cavalcade, so you now have a choice of joining the cavalcade or drive straight to Northam. I hope to see you there on the day! Contact on the day is Ray Willis 0407347340
The German Car Day cavalcade will assemble at a new departure point, in the car park at Centrepoint Midland near the MuzzBuzz outlet, at around 10.00 am. There, cavalcade participants will be able to obtain an itinerary for a scenic drive to Northam via Gidgegannup. Participants can also drive straight to Northam. On arrival in Northam, the cars will be displayed at Bernard Park, by the Avon River. Participants will be able to have lunch at a number of eating establishments in Northam, or bring a picnic lunch.

Quiz Nite - Friday 3rd July ??? Quiz Nite ??? The annual CMC Quiz Nite was held on Friday 3rd July at the Perth Soccer Club, organised by the Mercedes Benz Club of WA. The club was represented by 12 of the best scholars that the club could muster on a Friday nite - two tables of 6. Thanks go to Richard Hines for organising the tickets for us - well done! Table 1 consisted of Peter Abetz, Richard Hines, Bernd Felsche, Chris and Simon Dragicevich and Ray Willis. Table 2 consisted of Rod McSwain and Karen, Jason Philips and Michelle Dufall, John Hornby and Robin Bailey. After coming second for a couple of years, there was an air of expectant jubilation that one of our tables was capable of winning this year. We had one winner with Michelle winning a raffle prize of a book and book voucher. Well all i can say is that we struggled through the nite with a reasonable result we did not win the wooden spoon. But we will be back next year again, maybe you would like to joins us.

2004 was marked by the 500,000th Volkswagen sold in Australia as well as the Golf MkV release in Australia. The MkV was awarded a range of significant awards by the Australian motoring media in its days. The Golf GTI was awarded the NRMA „Best Car Awards‟ for Best Sports Car in 2007 while just missing out winning the second year in a row when it was marginally beaten by the Golf R32 in 2008. 2008 also saw the Golf GTI win the„DRIVE Car of the Year Award‟ for the third consecutive year.
100,000th Volkswagen Golf sold in Australia The Volkswagen brand has just reached a significant milestone on the Australian market with the sale of the 100,000th Golf since the initial model introduction. The celebratory new Golf 118TSI was handed over to its proud owner, Mark Hall, by Solitaire Volkswagen Hawthorn in Adelaide. Judging by the humble beginnings of the MkI in 1976, which then was assembled locally in Clayton, Victoria, nobody could have preempted the significance of this truly iconic model. Wheels Magazine recognized the significance of the Golf when it was named Wheel‟s Car of the Year in 1976 - 4,429 Golfs were sold that year. The first ever Golf MkI to be registered in Australia still is in the hands of its original owner, who himself was part of Volkswagen‟s history. Mr Dirk Goudberg was employed as Quality Control Manager at the Volkswagen plant in Clayton, Victoria, from 1958 until 1976. His vehicle was amongst the first six Golfs to be exported to Australia in individual components to

be assembled locally. The vehicle itself was completed locally in late 1974 and registered in 1975 as the first Golf in Australia. In 1983 the Golf MkII replaced the „original‟ Golf with global production of 6.3 million MkII Golfs between 1983 and 1991. The Golf MkIII went on sale in 1994 and for the first time since the MkI a diesel variant in the Golf range returned to the Australian market in 1996. 1998 saw the introduction of the Golf MkIV.
The next chapter in the Golf‟s journey has only just begun with the introduction of the new Golf into the Australian market in March 2009. This model is regarded as the most economical, safe and refined Golf yet and promises to be another Volkswagen success story in the making. In its short time on the market, it has already been honoured as the “2009 World Car of the Year”. Golf Timeline 1976: The Golf Mk I is released onto the market in March and is assembled in Clayton, Victoria. The Golf is named Wheels Magazine‟s Car of the Year. 4,429 Golfs are sold in the first year. 1977: The locally assembled Golf Mk I is replaced by fully imported German GLS. 1978: The Diesel GLS is added to the range. The fact that it wins both the overall award and our Best Green Engine prize indicates that you can have performance and efficiency in one package. A shift in voting trends this year in favour of the downsized, boosted gasoline engine would seem to indicate that Volkswagen is setting the pace here. I‟m sure we‟ll see others follow very soon.‟ Volkswagen has extended its TSI engine technology to include singlecharged engines at reduced cost but units that still achieve high specific power outputs and with similar fuel efficiency. More than 2,373,000 TSI engines have been built to date of which 554,330 are 1.4-litre units, and the latest example is a new fourcylinder, 1.2-litre TSI unit with 105 PS in the new Polo. Twin-charging continues, of course, as the leading technology for performance and economy in spark-ignition production car engines.
Passat CC Awarded for Outstanding Design
Dean Slavnich, co-chairman of the International Engine of the Year Volkswagen‟s recently released Passat CC was recognised with a Design Award for its innovation and design excellence at the 2009 Australian International Design Awards. The Australian International Design Awards, a division of Standards Australia, is recognised by the Commonwealth Government and the International Council of Societies of Industrial Design as the peak promotional body for the Australian design industry, and for its important role in fostering a culture of design and innovation in Australia. The Volkswagen Passat CC was awarded for „Best Exterior Design‟, which is both distinctive and sophisticated. The front end of the Passat CC shows another facet of the Volkswagen brand‟s face. More dominant than on any other Volkswagen, the radiator grille with its two cross-struts and centrally placed VW logo spans (Continued on page 13)

the area between the headlamps. An indicator of the Passat CC‟s excellent overall aerodynamic qualities is its drag coefficient of cw 0.29. Especially distinctive are the flowing lines of the car‟s side profile. The roof sweeps toward the rear with a very flat curve radius, from the A pillars to far beyond the C pillars. The lines of the trunk region even extend into the rear window, as if drawn with a single l i n e . The rear end of the Passat CC has an unmistakable visual image, day and night, thanks to its large-format dual taillights. A rear spoiler – integrated into the modulation of the boot lid – tames air turbulence and, like its counterpart at the front end, generates greater downforce. The large rear window visually extends far into the short but high-opening tailgate. It is a continuation of the coupé‟s roof line. The Passat CC is a pure four-seater. The coupé philosophy is reflected in the interior with this its front and rear ergonomically designed sport seats. In a first for Volkswagen, the Passat CC comes standard with so-called self-sealing tyres. The highly flexible rubber mixture inside the tyre encloses foreign bodies, such as a screw or nail, that puncture the tyre and reliably seals the tyre. Even when the foreign body is removed the tyre will remain sealed thanks to the highly viscous polymer coating inside the tyre.
A division of Standard Australia, the 2009 Australian International Design Awards (Australia‟s longest standing product design awards program) were announced at a gala dinner event in Melbourne.
Pickup from Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles to be called Amarok Means "wolf" in Inuit Symbolises strength and endurance
Amarok set to come to Europe afterwards Hanover, 5th June 2009 – The new Volkswagen pickup is called Amarok. In Autumn 2009, the first pickup by a European volume manufacturer in South America is to be unveiled. The South American launch is set for Spring 2010, with the Amarok coming to Europe in the summer. With the Amarok, Volkswagen is seeking to enter global pickup markets dominated for the most part by Japanese manufacturers. Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles already presented an impressive concept truck at last year's IAA Commercial Vehicles, providing a taste of the brand's new fourth model. The Amarok will be produced in Argentina at Volkswagen's "Pacheco" plant near Buenos Aires.
To be launched at the beginning of The name Amarok comes from the language of the Inuit, who live in 2010 in South America northern Canada and Greenland, and means wolf. The Inuit, one of the Eskimo peoples, regard the wolf as the king of the wilderness, an impressive figure due its strength, robustness, endurance and superiority. This name also means "he loves stones" in the Romance languages, which are spoken in the major markets in Brazil and Argentina. In these markets, pickups are highly in demand as recreational and commercial vehicles due to their versatility. The Amarok's reliability and suitability for off-road driving will make it a very attractive proposition. "This name fits to a tee the characteristics of our pickup, which will set new standards in its class. We took great (Continued on page 14)

The Amarok is the first pickup of this kind from a European manufacturer and will face competition in the onetonne class mostly from Asia. The sixth model from the Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles brand, which follows the Caddy, Transporter (or Multivan) and Crafter as well as the Saveiro and T2, both of which are available exclusively in South America, is a significant component in the Volkswagen Group's growth strategy and opens a new segment for Volkswagen. Schaller comments, "The Amarok lifts our brand into a new, even more international dimension. At the end of the 1950s Volkswagen set a new trend in advertising with the “Think Small” Beetle campaign in the USA. For the first time, a product was not superelevated, but given a down-to-earth portrayal with a clear reference to customer benefit. This campaign was instrumental in cementing Volkswagen‟s image in the USA. A further highlight was the German TV campaign for the Beetle called “Der Käfer – er läuft und läuft und läuft...” launched in 1968 which Volkswagen used to democratize mobility and thereby also convey the values the company still embodies today – responsible, valuable, innovative.
