Hello members! I managed to dodge the chocolate over this Easter, however VW Jon brought a bucket load of mini eggs to Alfreds so I did get a little “fix”…..Thanks Jon! I hope that you all had a great Easter break. I took my 1965 Splitscreen Kombi full of family over from the UK, on a road trip down to Yallingup and the surrounding areas. I was hoping to have an aching arm waving at all the VWs……I did not see one watercooled Dub over the whole weeks travels – How is that? In fact my families first day here involved another trip in the old bus as it was the “Scarborough to Munster Garage Cruise”. How could I miss out on this sold out event. My aunt, Mum and 80 year old grandparents had a great day, it was so nice lounging around on the freshly cut grass are surrounded by Volkswagens and friendly people. The plan came together nicely! A big thanks goes out to Bernie Brix and co. for inviting us to their place for this great day – There is talk that this will become an annual event! We’ll put his arm behind his back to make sure it does. We had a good 30 vehicles on the cruise and we certainly turned heads cruising through Fremantle's main street. More events are on the horizon too, by the time you read this some of us will be in Myalup for the brewery cruise and some of us would have driven to the “Down south monthly meet” in Busso. Fairbridge festival is on too, and the “Volksville” area has been kindly offered to all Volkswagen enthusiasts to stay in a prime spot in the village. Another big thanks to the Shermans for thinking of us again. It will be my 4th year on the trot at this awesome weekend. Day tickets available see the full advertisement in the following pages. See you out there or online.

We talked to Dean the owner of the Kombi and he said that he was using it as a shed storing all sorts of stuff.

I had my mate Geoff come over and he wanted to help so I gave him a crash course on welding and he had a great time. Thanks for all your help Geoff. I began talking to Dave about taking the bus to his place to replace to roof. Dave has been working on the donor roof, which is a big job doing a change over as I have done it on my splitty.

At the next Committee meeting we talked about the Kombi we had seen at the caravan park and suggested it would be an ideal Kombi for the club. With the Committee go ahead, Rod and I talked to Dean and managed to buy the Kombi Panel Van.

In the meantime there was still some small rust repairs to do on the bus. I would also like to thank Aron Slaven for selling me a good rust free sliding door cheap.

To keep abreast of the bus’s progress and also the action to date (lots of photos), logon to our website and the Forum under the topic…Club Kombi Panel Van.

Dave has now come over and picked up the Club Kombi Panel Van with the car trailer.

Keep a look out for when members can help, but for now its over to you now Dave…

When all the rust is done we will start to ask for helpers to take parts off, take home to clean, fix and paint and some to do panel work. At that stage we will know what parts we need and ask for some donor parts. I have started an A4 book with the names of helpers and also the costs as we go along. I will be leaving the book in the bus so we

Every month I look forward to the first Wednesday - It is the cruise there, often 4 or 5 of us travel down from the Hills together, and the smell of the burgers as I pull in the car park makes me want to park up quickly and get my food order in before any chat. Then my ears are eagerly listening for my number to be called out. After that it is camera out! and amongst that, chatting to people about their rides and what they are working on in the garage at home. Then you have the public unaware and just plain lucky that they happen to be there on the night with all the "Dubs"‌.. It is really nice to see these people keen to rekindle memories and share their stories about a VW past. A friend of mine out of the scene said he'll "pop" down for a quick bite and look around - But he couldn't leave as he was so excited looking in vehicles and talking to the owners! Funny how these cars suck you in. Jamie Barrett

point of use. The XL1 is an automotive hero that follows pure sports car design principles: low weight (795 kg), perfect aerodynamics (Cd 0.189) and a low centre of gravity (1,153 mm high). This gives the efficient Volkswagen the ability to cruise on the road at a constant speed of 100 km/h using just 6.2 kW. In all-electric mode, the XL1 requires less than 0.1 kWh to cover a driving distance of over one kilometre. Efficiency and driving fun. Hightech lightweight construction, perfect aerodynamics and the plug-in hybrid system – consisting of a two-cylinder TDI engine (35 kW), E-motor (20 kW), 7-speed dual clutch gearbox (DSG) and lithium-ion battery (capacity: 5.5 kWh) – enable the new Volkswagen XL1 to emit a mere 21 g/km CO2.

When the new millennium was Shorter than a Polo, lower than a ushered in, Prof. Dr. Ferdinand Porsche Boxster The XL1 is 3,888 Piëch, who is today Chairman of mm long, 1,665 mm wide and the Supervisory Board of just 1,153 mm tall. These are Volkswagen AG, formulated the pretty extreme measurements if visionary goal of bringing to maryou go by familiar passenger car ket a production car that was standards. By way of comparison: practical in everyday use with fuel The Polo has a similar length consumption of one litre per 100 (3,970 mm) and width (1,682 m) km. In the two-seat XL1, this vibut is significantly taller (1,462

mm). Even a full-blooded sports car like the latest Porsche Boxster is still 129 mm taller (1,282 mm). The presence of the XL1 is correspondingly spectacular – a car of the future, built in the present day. CFRP and aluminium dominate. A look at the scales shows why strong carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFPR) is the ideal material for the body of the XL1. The Volkswagen weighs just 795 kg. Of this figure, 227 kg represents the entire drive unit, 153 kg the running gear, 80 kg the equipment (including the two bucket seats) and 105 kg the electrical system. That leaves 230 kg, which is precisely the weight of the body – produced largely of CFRP – including wing doors, front windscreen with laminated glass technology and the ultrasafe monocoque. A total of 21.3% of the new XL1, or 169 kg, consists of CFRP. In addition, Volkswagen uses lightweight metals for 22.5% of all parts (179 kg). Only 23.2% (184 kg) of the new XL1 is constructed from steel and iron. Thanks to CFRP, the XL1 is not only light in weight but very safe as well. This is due in part to the high-strength and yet lightweight CFRP monocoque. In an emergency, it provides driver and passenger with the necessary survival (Continued on page 19)

space. In addition, the aluminium structures of the front and rear sections absorb the majority of the impact energy. These principles were likewise implemented in the design of the CFRP doors, where an aluminium absorbing beam is responsible for the absorption of the energy; moreover, a stiff CFRP door frame minimises the intrusions into the CFRP safety cell. XL1 embodies what is feasible today. The new XL1 is currently the most fuel efficient and ecofriendly automobile in the world. The only reason that this vehicle could be built is because the limits of what is feasible both in terms of the technologies utilised and the manufacturing method were redefined. Consider XL1 technologies: Volkswagen is implementing the most innovative systems and materials that offer the highest efficiency possible today. Consider XL1 manufacturing: In Northern Germany, Europe’s largest carmaker has set up a completely new handcrafting -like production for the the XL1. There are no current plans to launch the XL1 in the Australian market.

Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles Presents the e-Co-Motion Concept Vehicle World Premiere in Geneva: Electrically powered city delivery van could transport goods with

zero emissions in the future The global trend towards increasingly larger cities with 10, 15 or 20 million residents is associated with growing demands for transport solutions – more and more products and goods will need to be delivered to cities and transported away from them. At the same time, legal authorities are demanding significant reductions in greenhouse gases and emissions as well as compliance with more stringent CO2 limits. Moreover, many large cities are implementing vehicle access restrictions to avoid smog and fine particulate pollution. The e-CoMotion concept vehicle, an electrically powered city delivery van from Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, now offers a potential solution. Such a city delivery van, according to Dr. Eckhard Scholz, Spokesperson of the Board of Management of Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles who gave a presentation this evening, should be designed to exclusively utilise electric drive systems, so that users can realise the many benefits of its vehicle properties. In the specification for such a project, top priority should be given to a vehicle that is highly manoeuvrable with a small footprint and offers very good all-round visibility with a high seat position. In addition, very good seat ergonomics with easy entry and walkthrough are desirable. Loading should be made easy by a low cargo floor height, and the vehicle should also offer a large cargo capacity. Ideally, the overall concept should be implemented as a uniform platform that could serve as a basis for as many derivatives as possible - for a wide variety of body concepts and customer solutions. The electric drive unit is mounted to the rear axle together with a single-speed planetary gearbox to achieve large wheel turning angles at the front axle and thereby the manoeuvrability that is so important for city operation. As a result, its turning circle is 8.95 metres, which is unique in this vehicle class. The continuous power output of the compact drive unit is an energy-saving 50 kW. The drive unit’s maximum power is 85 kW, while its maximum torque of 270 Nm enables good acceleration even in heavily loaded vehicles. Although it was designed for city deliveries on city streets, the electronics of the eCo-Motion concept do not limit its top speed until 120 km/h. This permits driving on city motorways and short intercity routes. A three -stage modular battery concept for the traction battery optimally fulfils the different driving range requirements of customers. A battery with a capacity of 20 kWh could be installed for driving ranges of around 100 km, while a battery with 30 kWh would enable a 150 km driving range. Finally, a battery with 40 kWh storage capacity is planned for the top driving range of 200 km. The battery box was well designed; its crossmembers and rib structure let it serve a secondary purpose as a loadbearing body element that also helps to reduce vehicle weight. A key word here is workspace,

because the functional orientation of the vehicle concept is also reflected in the cleanly laid out control centre of the e-Co-Motion. Reduced to just the essentials, this has resulted in a commercial vehicle in the best sense of the word. It focuses on the everyday needs of a transporter: step in, buckle up and drive off – without having to read an operator’s manual first. There are practical storage options for tools, documents and freight goods, but without interfering elements. For example, instead of a selector lever, a rotary gear selector switch is installed, and there is no conventional handbrake lever. In turn, this simplifies walking through via the passenger’s side door, which is also made easier by the conveniently folding seat on the passenger’s side. While sitting in a pleasantly elevated seat position with good all-round visibility, the driver’s gaze only stops as it scans the cockpit, such as in viewing the control panel for climate control and infotainment, which controls nearly all vehicle functions from a central point and displays the necessary information on an eight inch colour monitor. Also ingenious is the movable, modular centre console with computer, storage compartment, drink holders and 12 V and 230 V accessory outlets. These are just a few examples of

innovations by Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, which show how the e-Co-Motion concept vehicle being presented at this year’s Geneva International Motor Show could be the ideal zero-emissions city delivery van of the future.

Committee’s Choice Award for the 2012 Shannons Day of the Volkswagen Well this article is a bit late in it is the end of April...close to 5 months since the 2012 Shannons Day of the Volkswagen...but we are here at last. At the Committee Meeting following the DofVW it was decided that the Committee would provide a trophy to the person they saw as most deserving. This will now continue on as DofVW tradition.

The award went to Blair Whittle. This 15 year old has been working on his Beetle for sometime now. He has done most of the work himself including the welding and making panels, the mechanics etc.

This was a father son project that got way out of hand. We bought the car off of a local retired Volkswagen mechanic when I was 14, it was a rusted bare shell that someone had left in a shed for a few years He and his family went to a without any paint on the lot of trouble to transport the body.

The car is currently not complete, we still have the interior to finish, but all mechanical, electrical and cosmetics are complete. Currently I’m 16 and we are on track for the deadline which is 30 March this year, which is the date of getting my license. So far this car has been a lot of fun and something to keep me and my dad busy. We would like to thank everyone who has helped us especially everyone from the internet forums. See you on the street!

Victory in Mexico – Volkswagen and Ogier in a league of their own 16 stage wins and a lead of three and a half minutes: Sébastien Ogier (F), at the wheel of the Volkswagen Polo R WRC, won the third round of the 2013 FIA World Rally Championship (WRC). Altitude, heat, hundreds of thousands of fans – alongside codriver Julien Ingrassia (F), Ogier dominated the Rally Mexico from start to finish to claim his second win of the season, following the duo’s success at the Rally Sweden. The Volkswagen pairing won all but seven of the 23 special stages and demonstrated remarkably consistent speed: thanks in

no small part to the Ogier factor, the number 8 Polo R WRC was among the fastest four cars on every stage. The icing on the cake was Ogier’s victory on the Power Stage, which earned him a further three points towards the World Rally Championship. Jari-Matti Latvala and Miikka Anttila (FIN/FIN) in the second Polo R WRC also proved their un-

doubted driving prowess. After incredible misfortune forced the Finns to retire from day two’s action just metres into the first special stage of the day, they took advantage of the Rally 2 regulation to rejoin the rally with a bang on Saturday and Sunday. The duo finished in the top three on six of the ten special stages held on days three and four in their number 7 Polo R WRC. Latvala’s tour de force came on the Power Stage: despite having to clear the route for everyone else, as the first man out onto the dirty route, he still managed to clock the third -fastest time to earn himself a bonus point towards the World Rally Championship. The victory at the Rally Mexico is one for the entire Volkswagen team. Engineers, mechanics, logistics – every cog fit perfectly into place within the Volkswagen outfit, as they took on the third rally of the season with the Polo R WRC. Each of the team’s eight services, which are temporally restricted by the regulations, ran like well-rehearsed choreography and provided Sébastien Ogier and Jari-Matti Latvala with perfect material throughout the rally. The fourth round of the 2013 FIA World Rally Championship will take place in Portugal from 11th to 14th April. Jari-Matti Latvala and Sébastien Ogier will be joined in the Volkswagen team by Andreas Mikkelsen, who will also drive a Polo R WRC. Quotes, Day Four of the Rally Mexico Jari-Matti Latvala, Volkswagen Polo R WRC #7 “No sooner had the rally started than things took a turn for the worse for us. We had to give up after a matter of metres on Friday, due to suspension damage we received when we hit a stone. After that, we tried a few things with the car and I worked on my driving style. By the end of the rally, I felt more comfortable than (Continued on page 28)

ever in the Polo. I now have a better understanding of the handling characteristics. That gives me a lot of motivation ahead of Portugal. Winning a point on the Power Stage was obviously a nice way to finish.” Sébastien Ogier, Volkswagen Polo R WRC #8 “What a fantastic feeling. The Polo R WRC was perfect for every single minute of the Rally Mexico. I can only thank my team for that. This victory at our debut on gravel is very special and will always have a special place in my heart. We will definitely celebrate it in style tonight. We take every win as it comes. This morning I took an extremely cautious approach on the first special stage and steered around every stone. However, from midway through I put my foot down again. We obviously have a big lead now in the World Championship, but there are still another ten rallies to come.” Jost Capito, Volkswagen Motorsport Director

Via West “To be honest: never in our wildest dreams did we expect this kind of success at our very first gravel rally with the Polo R WRC. We prepared meticulously for the World Rally Championships, and left nothing to chance in the run up to the Rally Mexico. As such, the win in Mexico is a success for the entire team, which worked together perfectly this weekend. Not only on-site, but also at home in Hannover and Wolfsburg. It is impossible to overrate Sébastien Ogier’s performance: the Ogier factor was what made the difference here. It allowed us to challenge for the win right from the word go. Respect. JariMatti Latvala’s performance was no less impressive. He was really unlucky right at the start of the rally, but fought back magnificently and was rewarded for his efforts with the World Championship point he won on the Power Stage. Again, respect. The suspension damage he suffered has shown us that we can still improve with the Polo R WRC.” And then there was … ... a surprising moment for Julien Ingrassia after the Rally Mexico. The Volkswagen Motorsport team not only welcomed Sébastien Ogier and Julien Ingrassia to the celebrations for the second win of this season’s FIA World Rally Championship (WRC) with a

Page 28 hearty round of applause, but also donned wrestling masks. There was method behind this madness: “Mister Mysterio” is a running gag in the WRC, which sees Julien Ingrassia and journalist Jerome Bourret incorporate surprise appearances in wrestling masks into everyday WRC life. Wrestling enjoys cult status in Mexico. You can find out more about “Mister Mysterio” at www.facebook.com/ elmistermysterio And then there was also … ... the only set-back for Sébastien Ogier at the Rally Mexico. On his way to the podium, the winner of the event in Mexico failed to spot that a sliding door was only half open. The result was a painful cut above his left eye. The wound was treated immediately by Volkswagen team doctor Jan Ole Eilers and his counterpart at Citroën, Philipe Dury. Ogier arrived at the presentation ceremony a few minutes later than expected.

Lining up in their Volkswagen Polo R WRCs, the show event on 6th April includes one of the most famous jumps in rallying, which is taken at full throttle.
