This year‘s show will be held on Sunday 4th December. We have decided to keep the show in the same vicinity, and with the help of the Town of Victoria Park, we have the use of McCallum Park. We have taken on board feedback from previous shows and the actual show hours will be shorter, starting later in the morning and still finishing mid afternoon. The 2011 Day of VW will be celebrating “50 Years of the Type 3” with extra trophies for that class this year. We have the details on our website, including a location map. The flyers and posters will be available and distributed as soon as they are printed. As unusual we will need volunteers on the day to help share the load around and let everybody, club members and committee, some time to enjoy the day. If you would like to help on the day, please let the committee know. If you have any ideas or know of any businesses that may be interested in attending also let the committee know. Shannons Insurance are once again our sponsor and we thank them for their long and continued support.

2011 VW Club Anniversary Hills Road Trip DATE: SUNDAY 16th OCTOBER MEETING POINT: FAST EDDY’S CANNINGTON TIME: 9:00am for a 9:30am sharp departure For those unaware, the club‘s anniversary date is around 16th October and until recently the club has had an Anniversary Kruize to celebrate the date. This year, members Dave and Louise Beckley have planned a Hills Road Trip for the club to celebrate our anniversary and to re-generate the annual event. The start point will be Westfield Shopping Centre car park near Fast Eddys.
Page 7
Those that wish to, can have an early start with a coffee or breakfast with a newspaper at Fast Eddys before 9:00am. The rest need to be at the departure point by 9:00am for a 9:30am sharp departure. The Hills Road Trip will take us on a leisurely tour through the Darling Scarp visiting some scenic locations, a couple of wineries and an orchard before arriving at our destination for lunch. We may pre-order at Fast Eddys to have our food ready when we arrive. Time will allow us to do some wine-tasting and if you like them, buy some wines. The orchard sells fruit, cider and jams. There is also an opportunity for morning tea or coffee at one of the stops. We will arrive for lunch around 1:00 -1:30pm, after which you return home at your leisure via your own route. More information in the next issue of the ViaWest and keep a look out on the ‗Events‘ calendar. There will be limited numbers, so a RSVP maybe required...so have a think about it ...and pencil it into your calendar if you wish. Look out for the door prize...

New Generation Jetta The New Generation Jetta Is Here: Larger And More Comfortable, Sustainable And Dynamic, And With A Bold New Styling The new Jetta is an entirely new vehicle. The appearance of its fully galvanised body shows this most emphatically. The new Jetta impresses as an independent vehicle and makes great strides forward in both concept and styling. The new model is 4.74 metres long, 1.47 metres tall and 1.78 metres wide. This makes the Volkswagen 19 centimetres longer than the previous model. The inter play of its exterior dimensions generates a powerful ratio of proportions. In parallel, the new Volkswagen ―Design DNA‖ sharpens its style. This has resulted in clear precise lines and athletically muscular surfaces, which give the sedan an elegant and dynamic style.

Designers and engineers have also crafted the interior right down to the last detail; now, the five-seater‘s quality and perfection in details clearly go beyond class boundaries. The extended wheelbase of the five-seat Jetta has enabled a rear seating layout that is appreciably more comfortable. and efficient technology and the new Jetta is a prime example of this. The new Jetta will be offered with the choice of TSI direct injection petrol and TDI turbo diesel power plants, all which are perfectly matched with either manual or Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG) transmissions. As with every Volkswagen, the Jetta is offered with a comprehensive network of safety components. Electronic Stabilisation Program (ESP), Electronic Brake-pressure Distribution (EBD), Anti-Slip Regulation (ASR) and Electronic Differential Lock (EDL), six airbags, front safety optimised head restraints to reduce whiplash, heightadjustable head restraints for all three rear passengers comes as standard in the Jetta. Also standard, and for the first time in a Jetta, is the special Crash Impact Sound Sensor (CISS) system. This system detects crash intensity and ensures that the airbags deploy to their proper positions faster than ever. The new Jetta addresses the automotive challenges of our time better than the vast majority of the competition − with a remarkably comfortable interior, a stylish and powerful design, and maximum efficiency. The NILS project is supported by the German Federal Ministry of Transport, Building and Urban Development, and is designed to be both technically realistic and economically supportable. ―NILS anticipates the future. The goal of the NILS project is to research a technically concrete and economically feasible vehicle concept for micromobility which restructures individual transportation to make it more efficient and environmentally compatible based on electric drive technology,‖ said Dr Ulrich Hackenberg, member of the Board of Management and Head of Development for the Volkswagen Brand. With a range of 65 kilometres and a top speed of 130 km/h NILS would be the ideal vehicle for the majority of commuters in Germany. According to the German Bureau of Statistics, 73.9 per cent of all commuters residing in Berlin and Munich cover less than 25 kilometres on their way to work. Cars have always been mirrors of their times – their design styles and technological standards reflecting a particular era – and NILS is no different. It uses emissions-reducing electric drive technology to fulfil the specific requirements of commuters. In Germany, for example, about 60 per cent of all commuters travel by car, according to the Federal Bureau of Statistics; of these over 90 per cent travel alone. Zeroemissions vehicles like NILS will offer these frequent drivers a new ecofriendly mobility solution. NILS is a very compact car that re-

Not only are the four disc brakes used to brake; electric traction by electric motor and battery regeneration can be used to brake as well. Last but not least, Front Assist is integrated in the automatic distance control system. This continually active system warns the driver of a potential collision; at speeds below 30 km/h, automatic braking can avoid a collision under some circumstances. (Continued on page 15)

The instrument cluster is a seven-inch TFT display. The vehicle‘s speed is shown digitally in the middle, while energy flow is represented by bars. Another graphic display offers information on the driving range. The second central instrument is a mobile multifunctional device like the one used in the new up!: the Portable Infotainment Device (PID). It is snapped into the A-pillar to the right of the instrument cluster. Via touchscreen, the driver controls functions related to Navigation, Radio, Media, Telephone, Trip computer and – to pre configure the driving range – ‗Eco. The PID computes the expected driving range, then it not only displays the route on the map display, but also the radius and thereby the destinations that can be reached using the current battery charge.

In launching the up!, Volkswagen is not only putting a new car in motion; it is also redefining the parameters of customisation and financing. The up! will have an infotainment system that owners can tailor to their personal profiles using apps. design. Klaus Bischoff, Head of Design for the Volkswagen Brand says: "If the goal is to maximise space, the ideal form for a small car would be a rectangular box. In the up! we were able to sculpt such a box with a clean and powerful design that does not lose sight of space utilisation." The front end of the up! reveals much about the car‘s character. Klaus Bischoff: "The face is unmistakably that of a genuine Volkswagen, but with a very independent personality. Naturally, the familiar styling characteristics of our brand face can also be found on the up! – Dimensions and styling for the world‘s the emphasis of horizontal elements metropolitan areas and the connection of the grille and headlights to form a band, the accents Extremely long wheelbase. They output 44 kW / 60 PS and 55 kW / 75 PS. Combined fuel consumption as a BlueMotion Technology version (including a Stop/Start system): 4.2 l/100 km (60 PS) and 4.3 l/100 km (75 PS). Both of these 1.0-litre engines emit less than the 100 g/km CO2 limit. A natural gas engine with 50 kW / 68 PS with the same basic configuration will follow. Its combined fuel consumption of 3.2 kg/100 km (natural gas) is equivalent to a CO2 value of 86 g/km; as a BlueMotion Technology version the natural-gas powered up! even attains a low CO2 value of 79 g/km. There are also definite plans for an up! with an electric drive for the year 2013.
safety technology system is the optional City Emergency Braking. It is automatically active at speeds under 30 km/h, and it uses a laser sensor to detect the risk of an imminent collision. Depending on the vehicle‘s speed and the driving situation, City Emergency Braking can reduce accident severity by initiating automatic brake interventions – and possibly even avoid a crash. So far, the up! is the only vehicle in the segment to be offered with an emergency braking function for city driving.
Small giant. Space utilisation in the car is exceptionally good, because of its wheelbase – one of the longest in the segment – combined with an engine that is mounted well forward. Although the driver, front passenger and 2 rear passengers are travelling in a small car, it is by no means a cramped vehicle. On the contrary. Consider the boot: 251 litres are significantly more than is typical in the vehicle class of the up! When the rear seat is fully folded, cargo space even increases to 951 litres. These two values show that in its interior the up! will be a giant among small cars. (Continued on page 17)

An interior design that is fun Lots of interior colour. Essentially, the up! interior has a very clean and wellorganised layout. The new Volkswagen also offers numerous clever and detailed solutions, fun styling and a level of quality that will enhance the market segment. Especially high-end is the Dash Pad, an instrument pad extending crosswise in front of the driver and front passenger. Depending on the equipment line, either decor paint or one of the 5 body colours is used in the interior. up! boxes – small things that make a big difference The developers of the up! asked themselves whether everyday living with the car could be structured in a simpler and friendlier way. Their answer was a decisive yes! Because it is often the small things that make a big difference. And that is how the idea of the up! boxes came about. Small, lightweight boxes for a wide variety of situations and needs. Take the "kid box", for example, that was designed for parents with small children; it includes a bag for the thousand small items that are essential with small children; and of course a toy to cuddle with and a lunch box for the obligatory snacks. Other up! boxes will be called the "city box" and the "travel box". And their names are their agendas.
Via West touchscreen, and the touchscreen can also be used to view important vehicle information, such as the visual display of the ParkPilot (controls the car‘s distance to the next vehicle). Apps specially developed for the up! also let users extend maps + more to meet their specific needs. Note: Features and technical data apply to models offered in Germany. They may differ in other countries. All fuel economy and driving performance data are forecast values as of August 2011.
