Well another show has come and gone and everything seemed to go well on the day. While the number of cars was a little down on last year‟s record number, we still had a number of new cars show up on the day and the club took nearly 20 new memberships. Memberships is now sitting at a record level for the club.
2010 Shannons Day of the Volkswagen
We tried out a bouncy castle for the first time and that worked well, we had some different types of stalls on the day including some extra food and they were kept busy. We had an official First Aid post on the day and that will continue in future to keep everybody safe and well on the day - no major incidents to report. While some of our traditional sponsors were missing, we had a number of new ones step up to help assist with costs of running the event. Our sponsors are listed on page 14. It was the first year of our new locked gate policy and this generally went well, although a number of cars were left outside the show as their owners could not commit to the entire show time. The policy will continue from now on - cars must be in and parked by 11:00am and the gates wont open again until 3:00pm. This is for the safety of all show participants and members of the public. Unfortunately, this was the last year for GO Edwards Park and we are now looking for a new venue for the 2011 show. All suggestions are welcome, but we are looking for a venue with public exposure. Finally, a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to everybody ... Drive your VWs safely and we will see you in the new year...the year of the 2011 Toodyay Bug-in! Ray Willis

2011 Bug-In show n shine Hello to all our members and VW enthusiasts out there. One of the main events for the 2011 Toodyay Bug-In is the Show n Shine. We have a unique opportunity in 2011 to have our show in the main street of Toodyay and ask everybody to come along and fill up the street with VWs. If you are in Toodyay for the Bug-in, the show is right on your doorstep and what better venue could you imagine. We are privileged to be able to present the show right in the middle of town. If you are not in Toodyay, this is a Saturday morning event, so you can have a pleasant drive to this historic town and have breakfast at one of the great cafes, show your car and then see the sights around Toodyay in the afternoon. There will be trophies for the best cars on the day and we hope to have some special displays incorporated for all to enjoy. PUT THIS ONE IN YOUR CALENDAR AS MUST FOR EASTER 2011!

SuperTrucks and Season Finale The SuperTrucks was the grand-finale to a great year in Formula Vee. After having 19 cars on the track in September, we hoped to get to the magic 20, but fly-in-flyout type issues inhibited entries to 18. Keeping it short and sweet regarding the SuperTrucks Meeting in order to focus upon Championship outcomes:

The New Volkswagen Caddy All-rounder more improved in every aspect: New TDI and TSI engines cut running costs; and ESP and daytime running lights standard on all Caddys Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles is launching an extensive update of the popular selling Caddy range. The compact van with its practical rear sliding door system has been enhanced in every respect. With new TDI and TSI four-cylinder engines and gearbox variations for every conceivable use and further reduced running costs make the new Caddy one of the most innovative urban delivery vehicles and compact vans available. In Germany the Caddy is the undisputed No.1 with a 43.6 per cent market share, while across Europe, at 16 per cent it is also among the three best-selling vehicles of its kind. Here in Australia the Caddy is also a leader in its segment. Globally the now superseded versions of the Caddy sold around 800,000 units within just six years (2004 to 2009). The new Caddy now promises a dynamic continuation of this success story.
The Caddy is the first urban delivery vehicle and compact van in its class to be equipped as standard with ESP on all models. The new Caddy will also be the only vehicle in this market segment available with the option of an efficient 6 or 7-speed direct shift gearbox (DSG) and Hill Start Assist.
The Caddy‟s new petrol and diesel engines deliver extreme efficiency [all complying with the Euro 5 emission limits]. All of these are completely new to the range and equipped with turbocharging and direct fuel injection.
Turbo diesel engines: The turbocharged four-valve (TDI) diesel enAlso for the first time in the Caddy Life gines deliver 75 kW and 103 kW reversions, it is possible to take out not spectively. These two TDIs now use only the optional third row of seating, very quiet and efficient common rail but the second row as well. For the direct injection which is also linked as short wheelbase Caddy this produces standard to a diesel particulate filter. – loaded to the roof – a cargo capacity Petrol engines: Two new TSI petrol of up to 3,200 litres; for the Caddy engines are being used in the Caddy. Maxi the figure is 3,880 litres. Technical features of both high-tech engines include a turbocharger and direct fuel injection. The extremely fuel -efficient four cylinder engines develop 63 kW and 77 kW respectively from a cubic capacity of 1.2 litres. The efficiency of the engines is demonstrated, for example, by the 77 kW version with an average fuel consumption of only 7.0 litres per 100 kilometres for the (equivalent to 163 g/km CO2 figures). Compared to the outgoing model consumption has been reduced by 1.2 litres or 14.6 per cent. New features: Standard on all versions are the new daytime running lights. Optional extras on the new range include adaptive cornering lights (integrated into the front fog lights and roof rails). (Continued on page 18)

VW Golf and Tiguan win Gold in ‘Best of the Best 2011’ Awards From Money Magazine The Volkswagen Golf has had its second consecutive win in the Money Magazine „Best of the Best 2011‟ Awards. The „Best-Value Small Cars‟ Category was taken out by the Golf 118TSI. The Volkswagen Tiguan received Gold as „Best-Value SUV‟. Anke Koeckler, Volkswagen Group Australia Managing Director, greeted the announcement with surprise. “Two years in a row is a great success for the Golf, it is clearly consistently delivering to both our customers‟ and our critics‟ expectations,” said Ms Koeckler. “Our multi-award winning Tiguan may have come to this segment late but it has made its mark with its value, quality and great design.” Veteran motoring expert and Money Magazine judge, Bruce Newton, ex-
plains the decision behind the choice in the „Best-Value Small Cars‟ category: “The Volkswagen Golf, our reigning champion in this hard fought category, repeats the success thanks to a combination of quality engineering and design that make it outstanding value.” Mr Newton praised the Tiguan for its compact size and nimbleness: “Think of Volkswagen‟s Tiguan as the compact SUV equivalent of the Golf – smart, efficient and desirable. Our favourite model is the top spec turbopetrol 147TSI because it offers that SUV rarity, a cohesive driving experience.” In its eleventh year, Money Magazine‟s „Best of the Best 2011‟ Awards recognise Australia‟s best financial product, services and investments. Expert research partners select the 101 gold winners from tens of thousands of products.
Volkswagen Passat Wins People's Choice Award The Volkswagen Passat has won the Medium Car category in the Carsales Network People's Choice Awards 2010. announced in 2003. Volkswagen Group Australia‟s Managing Director, Anke Koeckler, said: “It is wonderful to see the Volkswagen Passat awarded in the Medium Car category. This shows that over the years, the Passat has established itself as a firm crowd favourite with great potential to continue its popularity with the arrival of the new Passat in Australia next year.” CEO of carsales.com Ltd, Greg Roebuck, congratulates the winners: “Given we are Australia‟s first choice for new car shoppers, we believe these awards give a very clear endorsement of the cars that are attracting the attention of Australian new car buyers. The strength of the respective models in their categories is evident,” Roebuck said.
Carsguide’s ‘Best Green Car 2010’ Award It Is Not An Electric Car Or A Hybrid – It’s Volkswagen’s Diesel Polo
Via West The Volkswagen Polo is continuing its successful awards season taking out the title as Carsguide‟s „Best Green Car 2010‟. The judges focused on criteria such as fuel consumption, CO2 emissions, car value and safety as well as vehicle technology and functionality. The Volkswagen Polo 66TDI received 31 points to take out the overall win, beating other serious contenders. With impressive fuel consumption figures of 4.7 litres / 100km in combined cycle for the manual (4.6 litres / 100km with DSG) as well as low CO2 emissions of 124g/km (121g/km with DSG), it had an impact on the judges. Stuart Martin, Adelaide Advertiser, was impressed with the Polo engine: “Volkswagen‟s new Polo might not be the cheapest contender in the Best Green Car field, but experience says it‟s a first-rate package – the diesel engine‟s numbers are tough to ignore.”

Volkswagen to Contest 2011 Dakar Rally with New Race Touareg 3 Extreme desert passages, dizzying heights in the Andes, fast gravel sections – the Dakar Rally remains the longest and toughest test in motorsport: Volkswagen is determined to bring the title home to Wolfsburg for the third consecutive time. This is the aim for which the new Race Touareg 3 and the four proven driver pairings have been carefully prepared. Volkswagen is the only manufacturer so far to have decided the automobile classification of the desert classic in its favour with diesel technology. From 01 to 16 January 2011, which marks the third edition of the “Dakar” through Argentina and Chile, the historic 2009 and 2010 exploits are to be succeeded by another triumph with TDI power. The challenge remains an immense one: in addition to battling very powerful rally rivals, the Volkswagen squad first has to successfully master the gruelling special stages, which means beating the “Dakar” itself.
Volkswagen Group Australia‟s Managing Director, Ms Anke Koeckler, is thrilled to receive recognition for the Polo‟s green credentials: “After the Polo 66TDI‟s win in this year‟s Australia‟s Best Car Awards, it is fantastic to also be awarded for its great environmental aspect. But this by no means makes the task any easier. Our rivals will do everything within their power to defeat us, plus the entire squad will be in for 14 tough days,” says Volkswagen Motorsport Director Kris Nissen. “This is why we didn‟t rest on our laurels but have systematically optimised the Race Touareg on the proven base. Mechanics, engineers, co-drivers and drivers, as well, have been working on many details to be prepared better than ever. It will again be a difficult task but we‟re tackling the 2011 Dakar Rally with confidence. Our aim is to win for the third consecutive time.” Four new Race Touareg cars, four strong Volkswagen duos, one aim For the hat-trick mission Volkswagen relies on the newly developed third generation of the Race Touareg. But in terms of shape it is a milestone achievement in which Volkswagen has realised a new cooling concept in addition to visually adapting the rally prototype to the model change of its production counterpart. The radiators located behind the cockpit were enlarged and receive an optimal supply of fresh air thanks to a double air inlet in the roof. The fuel, brake and damper cooling systems were perfected as well. The new air flow routing reduces the accumulation of air underneath the carbon skin. Especially on hot desert stretches driven at relatively low speeds where the amount of air supplied is accordingly low while the required engine power is high nonetheless this leads to a notable plus in performance.

Our really big strength lies in
our careful preparation and the resulting reliability, which we had to preserve despite detailed optimisations. Instead we put our main focus on optimising the aerodynamics, which enabled us to achieve major progress in cooling. I believe that we managed to achieve a good compromise between risk and restraint.” What is the advantage of the new air flow routing of the Race Touareg 3? “The new aerodynamics of the Race Touareg 3 is the result of experience gained over the past few years. The question was: how can we improve the performance capabilities of the car? We realised that the combination of high altitudes, high ambient temperatures and the condition of the terrain may lead to high water temperatures. Although this was not harmful to the car thanks to our component protection it did result in a performance loss. We rethought this topic from scratch and then completely revised our cooling concept.” What other development objective was ranking at the very top of the specifications? “The modification of the intercooling system was a major objective. The main focus, initially, was not on increased power and performance but on higher component quality. Up to that point, we‟d already been using the best product on the market. Together with Volkswagen Prototyping we developed an internal solution that now replaces this supplier component with an in-house component. That in the end we also achieved a plus in performance was a welcome side effect.” (Continued on page 22)
