Hi All, Communication is an area that I feel we as a club need to focus on. We have got some great things happening to improve the way we can all interact with each other when we’re not on the road, at a meet or show. Facebook is an outlet that our Vice President John Hornby is looking after. The new club page is up a running. John has been uploading some interesting articles and pictures. We are starting to get many “friends” and “likes”. This platform has got great potential for letting “friends” know about our club runs and other associated events. Be sure to pay it a visit if you’re a Facebook user. Our club Forum is getting more and more traffic, this is great so see. Behind the scenes a fresh look and overhaul of the current view is underway. New options and ease of use being the focus. I feel that these electronic assets are the key to our future. It is the way forward! You can give feedback on the Forum and keep up to date and ask questions. It is great for new Volkswagen enthusiasts coming to Western Australia, they are able to introduce themselves, and find out where we meet and what we’re all about. On that subject “Alfreds” is going strong! We get around 30 vehicles each month, and many new faces come along. If you have not ventured on down – the 1st Wednesday of each month is the date. This is a great place to catch up and have a tasty burger or the famous pea and ham soup. See you out there!

In 1887, with De Dion at the tiller, it won the world's first ever motor race (it was the only entrant to make the start line!) covering the 32km from the Pont de Neuilly in Paris to Versailles and back in one hour and 14 minutes (an average of 25.9km/h) and, according to contemporary reports, hitting a breathtaking 60km/h on the straights! La Marquise has only had four owners, remaining in one family for 81 years, and has been restored twice, once by the Doriol family and again by British collector Tom Moore in the early 1990's. Since then, it has taken part in four London-to-Brighton runs and collected a double gold at the 1997 Pebble Beach d'Elegance in California.

Dub box introduces retro-styled trailers for campers and foodies Dub box USA offers a new solution for nostalgic folks yearning for a camper as cool as the Volkswagen Type 2 of the 1950s and 60s. Its line of camping trailers is inspired by the classic VW buses, and is offered without the expense and headaches of restoring an old Type 2. DoubleBack adds a sliding pod to VW's Transporter van It was over thirty years ago that Volkswagen first started offering "pop tops" on its camper vans. In the years since, the soft-sided interior heightextenders have become a common sight on VW vans parked in campgrounds all over the world. Now, Welsh company Overlander Motorhomes is offering what it sees as the logical compliment to the pop top it's the DoubleBack, a sliding insulated pod that extends the interior length of Volkwagen's T5 Transporter van.

R – CHASSIS The Scirocco R is available with a specially tuned sport chassis and XDL (Extended Electronic Differential Lock) as standard equipment. The latter refers to a functional extension of the electronic differential lock (EDL) that is integrated in the ESP system and limits any type of traction loss. XDL compensates for understeer: As soon as the intelligent electronics detects unloading of the front wheel at the inside of a curve in fast driving, the ESP hydraulics apply braking pressure at the specific wheel to restore optimal traction. So, XDL serves as a transverse differential lock to compensate for the typical understeer of frontwheel drive cars in fast cornering. The driving behaviour of the agile Scirocco R is made significantly more precise and neutral thanks to the sophisticated XDL. Chassis layout: In front, the Scirocco R has a MacPherson strut type suspension for precise tracking and balanced comfort properties. In the rear, a fourlink suspension convincingly meets the challenge of achieving a sporty yet comfortable chassis tuning. Adaptive Chassis Control optimally resolves the dilemma between comfort and dynamics: The Scirocco R is fitted with Volkswagen’s innovative Adaptive Chassis Control as standard equipment. Volkswagen Introduces the Modular Transverse Matrix (MQB) The Beginning of a New Era: Volkswagen Introduces the Modular Transverse Matrix (MQB) MQB exploits synergies in key technologies across vehicle classes and brands MQB makes luxury class technologies accessible to high-volume models This year, Volkswagen Group will be introducing the Modular Transverse Matrix – the German acronym is MQB – for the Volkswagen, Audi, ŠKODA and SEAT brands. The MQB strategy represents a turning point in the design and production of future automobiles with transverse-mounted engines. The Modular Transverse Matrix standardises many vehicle component parameters – across brands and vehicle classes. At the same time, it offers access to new technologies. The MQB extends from the A0 to the B segment. At the Volkswagen brand, for example, it covers the following models: Polo,
Page 26 Beetle, Golf, Scirocco, Jetta, Tiguan, Touran, Sharan, Passat and Volkswagen CC. In the future, all of these models could theoretically be produced on the same assembly line – despite their different wheelbases and track widths. It will be possible to produce MQB models of different brands together. The first new vehicles to be produced based on the MQB will be the successor to the Audi A3 and the next generation Golf. One of the prominent characteristics of the Modular Transverse Matrix is the uniform mounting position of all engines. Two systems integrated in the MQB strategy which play a key role here are the modular petrol engine system (MOB) with the new EA211 engine series (40 kW to 110 kW) – this range includes the world’s first fourcylinder engine with cylinder deactivation (ACT) – and the modular diesel engine system (MDB) with the also new EA288 engine series (66 kW to 140 kW). In one fell swoop, the new engine series will reduce the Group’s engine and gearbox variants in the MQB system by approximately 90 per cent. Without any negative effects. On the contrary, in addition to standardising conventional internal combustion engines, the MQB also enables an identical mounting position for all current alternative drive concepts without limitations – from natural gas and hybrid versions to the pure electric drive. Volkswagen has already announced the launch of the latter within the MQB (Continued on page 27)

Volkswagen Group Australia has officially crowned Barloworld Volkswagen Mascot as Volkswagen’s National Dealer of the Year 2011 at a gala event in Sydney on Saturday. Volkswagen Group Australia’s Managing Director, Ms Anke Koeckler, handed over the award to Mr Darryl Pribut, Dealer Principal of Barloworld Volkswagen Mascot, who earlier in the evening had collected the “Commercial Vehicle Dealer of the Year”, and the “Central Region Dealer of the Year” awards. “Barloworld Volkswagen Mascot performed incredibly well and is a deserving winner,” Ms Koeckler commented on the gala night. “However, recognition should be given to the entire Volkswagen dealer network. 2011 was a busy year for all of us and we would not have been able to achieve the sales figures we did without the commitment and hard work from all of our dealers.” A total of seven awards including regional categories were announced, with Albany Volkswagen winning its third consecutive “Western Region Dealer of the Year” trophy.

Via West The 1957 Panel Van ( The Roo Shooter) is currently laid up with both legs and almost two arms out of bed in the rear end. Although I was not there when the existing engine threw up at the recent drags I can assure you that the sound was deafening and the sight was saddening. Nothing that a new case and set of internals wont rectify very quickly. The rebuild will be completed early February allowing adequate testing time before the event.
Ratmuller Racing Newsletter - Vol.2 2012 More than a pinch of salt… Four days on the salt at Lake Gairdner, South Australia chasing elusive land speed records including the title of the world’s fastest 36 HP Beetle in the 36HP Challenge.
T
he 2012 Event
Three of the five vehicles are complete and ready for the event - 1956 Oval, 1968 Ghia and 1960 Beetle. The 1975 Superbug has now been built up as a Mexican Taxi and only needs some final welding work on the roll cage and the supercharger mounted to the manifold and the vehicle is ready to go to the dynometer for some testing.
This vehicle has run a 14.1 at Eastern Creek so the potential is there. A recent decision has been made not to run the 2011 Golf R this year. The Team will be heavily involved in getting and maintaining 5 vehicles to the starting line so the Golf build has been put on hold until next year.
O
verseas Involvement
There will be three enthusiasts travelling from the US for the event and one from Holland. With records in the offering we will be pleased to be able to give the US guys something to write home about. At this stage one of the visitors looks like having a run in the 1975 Mexican Taxi. Burly Burlile, the 36HP guru will be documenting the event for content in Hot VWs magazine and possibly Ultra VW. The other is Todd Penn, a Canadian who is a regular participant at Bonneville

Page 29 There are now 6 drivers to share the 5 vehicles: • 1975 Superbug - Don Kendall and Todd Penn • 1960 Beetle - Greg Mackie and Pete Munn • Ghia and Roo Shooter - Steve Muller • 1956 Oval - John Weninger
S
ponsorship
Many thanks to Volkswagen Group Australia who continue as the primary sponsor for the Ratmuller Racing Team. Without this support there is a reduced opportunity to be involved in a venture of this magnitude. We also want to acknowledge the sponsorship support from Don Kendall of DSK Waste Services and John Weninger of Martin and King Pty Ltd both of who will be driving this year.
C
lass records
The Team can sniff creation of class records for two Australia based Land Speed Racing classes. For the 36HP Challenge we expect to be able to break the world record for a stone stock 36HP Beetle of just over 75 miles per hour as well as getting very close to breaking the K36 Class Record of 101 mph held by Dick Beith since 1961 The records we are aiming to beat are SS36 at 75.534 mph and K36 at 101.296 mph.
