Membership Renewals Your membership renewals will be out in the mail in the next week or two. This is a
little bit later than in the past couple of years. Remember that all renewals received by the club by 31st August 2010 (Post Box collection) will go into the draw for a FREE membership for 2011/12. Last Year‟s Winner was Arnold van Son, who gets this year FREE.
As most of you will be aware, the Club membership runs from July 1st to June 30th. However, as you will also be aware - because you have read your constitution - your membership is valid to 30th September. If you haven‟t renewed by this date, then your membership will automatically lapse.
Annual General Meeting The club‟s AGM will be held on Wednesday 29th September. Details are in this
magazine on page 6. This is an invitation to ALL MEMBERS. The AGM is a forum for any ideas YOU have for the club in the coming year. It is also YOUR opportunity to vote for YOUR committee or to stand for election to a committee position yourself. Come along and have a say in your club. You will need to have your membership fully paid by the 29th to participate. Tea and Coffee provided.
2010 Day of the Volkswagen The 2010 Day of the Volkswagen will be held on Sunday 5th December at
GO Edwards Park in Victoria Park. Yes we will be back at the old venue after last years temporary move to the other park. Entry fee this year will be $10 per vehicle and while this increase reflects increased operating costs, it is the first increase in many, many years. The vehicle entry this year will be off Craig Street, between Gt Eastern Hwy and Burswood Road. The posters, flyers and maps will be out shortly. There has been changes made to the Show n Shine categories and these will be released very shortly also. Please accept my apologies for the late issue of the July magazine.
See you at the next club event...Ray Willis

Formula Vee...in the beginning. by Kay Prosser The start of 1987 saw the first Formula Vee (Daveric Mk VI) arrive in Western Australia when Ian Jones migrated to the West from Victoria. He was unable to race the car due to a class for the Vee not being available. It wasn't until late 1989 that the
The word spread throughout WA and the Association was under way. It grew when another car was purchased from South Australia and Ian Jones and Brian Newson ran the demonstration at the Wanneroo 300 Race Meeting in 1989. This attracted others to the Formula and by February 1990, Brian had purchased his own car (Venom) from Victoria, thus three cars appeared on the track for the start 1990 racing. The F.V.A.W.A. Secured sponsorship from various businesses in WA for each race meeting so this meant that the Formula vees were racing

car first ran on the Wanneroo circuit when VolksWest arranged a promotional demonstration for the category. Just prior to this , Terry Phillips and Keith Morton set foundations to form the Formula Vee Association of Western Australia. The sons of Terry and Keith, Sean (18 years old) and Luke (15 years old) were wanting to progress beyond Karting. The next step was Formula Ford but there is a huge cost gap between Karting and Formula Ford that is beyond the financial reach of most people. So Formula Vee looked more and more attractive.
for prize money from day one of their racing history in the West. Terry and Keith had purchased Elfin Crusader kits for their sons and constructed them to contest the rest of the 1990 season‟s racing. Stan Craigie purchased his car (Malmark) from Victoria and several others were being constructed. By the middle of the year there were seven cars lining up on the grid for each race - this showed the race public what Formula Vee racing was all about and the varied types of cars that were involved.
Two new cars of Sean Phillips and Luke Morton proved to be very competitive combinations and Sean (in his first season) led most races and took out the championship for the inaugural year of WA Formula Vees. As the season drew to a close for 1990, the FVAWA obtained a corporate sponsor in Zamels Jewellers for the 1991 season. The interest grew immensely and for the start of the 1991 season WA fielded approximately 20 cars at each race meeting. Well, as they say the rest is history...

Kombi Transformation into Charity Trekker As both Aaron and Jenni have been support crew for the trek for many years, we have now taken the opportunity to become trekkers. We purchased a 1972 VW Kombi back in November 2009 and since then our good friend Chris has been helping us turn the car into something quite spectacular. Thanks Chris for all your hard work. There is still more work to be done, signs are being organized, auto electrics needs some TLC, and the interior will be dealt with in due course. For those who haven‟t heard of us before, let me give you a quick run down on what we do: The Trek is a motoring event which travels to different parts of Australia (the long way) for a week every year. To be involved in this annual journey you must have a 2wd vehicle older than 30 years and you must theme the car. You must also raise a minimum amount of money which is donated to The Kids Cancer Support Group, from ward 3b at Pr incess Margar et Hospital. (www.kcsg.org.au) This year the Trek is going from Perth to Kalgoorlie to Perth. We will depart Perth on Thursday 14th October 2010 and arrive back on Saturday 23rd October 2010.
Oh I should also add that the Kombi is going to Bunbury to be "Hippied up" by Bolt the sign writer.
