Hi... I am writing this fresh off the back of a great day of Volkswagen cruising. Yesterday (16th June) was our Dubs by the Pub Event. We had over 30 vehicles cruise the Great Eastern Highway from Burswood to Mundaring where we were given a lovely patch of privately owned grass right next to the pub to line up and display the Dubs. The weather couldn’t have been better for us. A big thanks goes out to Dannyel from the Hotel for allowing us to have this space. There were mechanical problems for an unlucky few but I understand all got home ok. Who else would put up old vehicles and their niggles but us VW lovers. On that note I want to make it clear that we are the Volkswagen Club – supporting all aged vehicles not just air-cooled, it would be great to see some newer marks on our events. Perhaps next time my wife and I will bring our Golf and Passat along! I hope you enjoyed lasts months issue of ViaWest the more people focused edition has been a hit! I thoroughly enjoyed it along with many other readers it seems, as the feedback has been rewarding – our Editor Ray Willis does a stellar job! We will continue this theme with the help and support of people contributing to the stories, so keep them coming… I tend to say this each month but while the chips are up I will continue to do so – we are at record membership numbers 179...an all time high. Having you join and pay your membership allows us to invest in our club’s future and do some exciting things, watch this space…
Jamie Barrett Club President Reminder...membership renewals will be posted to you in July for the 2013/14 year, hopefully your postal and email addresses are up to date with the club...if not please let us now of any changes ASAP.

Aussie in Alaska turns Fifty!
Fast-forward to 2000. After 20 years of just sitting there the car had sunk up to its pan in the dirt.
In May 2003 Clayton was back on-the-road. Clayton had many parts stamped with the original Australia VW symbol — the tire rims, Yes Clayton is turning 50 and inside the door handles — but since no one could see this year…and you ask them I had decals made with who is Clayton? the distinctive VW and two In 2010 we ran an article kangaroos symbol and put

in the Via West about Clayton, the Australian built 1963 VW Beetle that now resides in Alaska and his rescuer and owner Greg Wilkinson. Extracts from 2010…
“Clayton” (named after the Clayton Manufacturing Plant in Victoria) was shipped to Alaska in 1980 when a US Navy man returned home from service in Western Australia. The sailor had brought Clayton home with plans to restore him. The bug was parked in his dad’s backyard in Anchorage, Alaska, covered with a blue tarp, and left there to rot away for the next 20 years. You can read the whole story in the May-June 2010 Via West… look under the Club Magazine 2010 Archives. http://vwclubwa.com/ club-magazine-archive2010

2013 Clayton, who turns 50 this year, is on his 10th year of patrolling the streets of Anchorage this summer. We still get so many smiles, thumbsups, and double-takes when people realize that he’s RHD. Pulled out the front beam this spring and in-

An important aspect of the RQWC is to determine the current state of knowledge in the Volkswagen dealership and service organisations in the participating countries. With the aid of this information, country-specific training programmes can then be devised and implemented. The World Championship therefore has a key role to play in a targeted improvement in the level of training among Volkswagen sales and service employees around the world.

Move aside Schumacher…… On Sunday 1st December, I was given an opportunity to drive a “Formula Vee” race car around the track of “Alf Barbagallo” Raceway thanks to Dieter Nack of “Chips Away” Body Repairs and “Advanced Automotive Consultants” Wangara. I jumped at the chance, having been a rev head since toddlerhood. I have to admit though to an attack of butterflies once I got to the track. However not being one to chicken out, I lowered myself into the car and gave the obligatory one thumb salute before heading off for my thrill ride. For the first two laps I chose to keep left to allow the lead footed ones to pass me while I got a feel for the circuit. Then as my confidence increased, so did my speed.
ed that I had hogged the racetrack long enough. The experience was awesome and thoroughly deserved my voluntary two thumbs up as well as my Cheshire cat grin (hidden beneath the helmet) after I came to a stop. Apart from the six-sash belt harness to keep your body in and the cool race helmet to keep your head on, driving a Formula Vee racecar is similar in principle to driving my VW Bug.

FORMULA VEE SPECIFICATIONS ENGINE
GEARBOX FRONT SUSPENSION WHEELS TYRES TOP SPEED MINIMUM CAR WEIGHT
1200 CC standard Volkswagen engine. No modifications permitted other than polishing/porting of cylinder heads and balancing engine components. Approximately 50 HP produced. Standard Volkswagen (VW 1200, 1300 or 1500 gearboxes permitted). Mounted 180 degree about for better weight distribution. Free, provided standard Volkswagen axle tubes, backing plates/drums are used. Standard Volkswagen rims can be used or 5.5 inch alloy wheels Bridgestone have developed a racing compound tyre. Tyres are all weather, unidirectional. Approximately 210 kph (depending on gearbox used)
Offering reasonable though snug comfort, the main difference with the Formula Vee is that your backside is virtually trackside sitting only two inches above ground with the fuel tank sitting right below your legs. Overall, I highly recommend to all fellow rev heads out there to contact the Formula Vee’s and either get involved in racing one or at least have a go at a test drive like I did. You won’t regret it! Thanks again to Dieter for the opportunity as well as Derek and Sue Burns and crew for their hospitality.
