Hi... My old Bus has racked up some serious kms over the last couple of months including a trip to Margaret River, another to Busselton for last months down south meet, then off to Fairbridge for a long weekend, then a couple of weekends ago I took a trip to Fremantle for the Custom Cars & Coffee meet at Captain Munchies* - probably time for an oil change. Not only do I love driving my Kombi, I love driving in convoy. I also love the people in the scene. Getting out with other VW lovers is what really does it for me...sharing stories and discussing plans to restore and checking out other people’s progress or latest modification. You will notice that this month’s magazine is more people focused, it is not so much about the car this time around but more about people like YOU, the person in the VW community that shares that passion and love for the best, most recognized brand of vehicle in the world. Hopefully you recognize some of the characters in this addition, perhaps you are far away and haven't been able to get out to a meet or run, but when you do you will know some of the friendly faces - and trust me, everyone that I have met over the years has been approachable, friendly and keen to chat! A lot of talk of love in this Presidents Spot - perhaps I'll paint some flowers on my Kombi. Peace !

2013 Fairbridge Festival The 2013 Fairbridge Festival delivered everything it promised! What a great weekend, 4 days for some! If you haven't already been to the event it is something that you should really consider, only 45 minutes from Perth and once you are there you are in another world. If you have a Volkswagen you get the privilege of parking in "Volksville" it's a marked out area designated right near all the action just for VeeDubs. This years entertainment was the best that it has been since my first attendance 4 years ago with likes of Tin Pan Orange, Mama Kin, Andrew Winton (Australian song writer of the year 2012) and a couple of surprise appearances by John Butler. The music is so diverse folk, blues, world music to name just a few genres. A big thanks goes out to the organisers for continuing what has become a tradition of giving the area to the VW community of large. Bring on next year. Kind regards Jamie Barrett

‘American Pickers’ VonDutch XAVW Hits Museum! The National Motorcycle Museum has become quite a cross roads for all sorts of antique and vintage motorcycling. John Parham, long time collector and president of the Museum practically lives there and welcomes in almost daily collectors of motorcycles, toys, artwork, photos and more, even old oil cans and great porcelain signs. John knew Mike Wolfe for about 20 years before he became a celebrity through the television hit, American Pickers. So Mike makes it a point to stop by and see John when he’s in the neighbourhood, or has some super new find he wants John to see, maybe even own. But then sometimes, Mike keeps the coolest things he finds, like many of us do. Such was the case recently. What is a picker? In case you don’t already know it a picker is
the first guy to lay eyes on a neglected, hidden, forgotten interesting object from our past. Pickers knock on doors out in the country if their sixth sense says the barn holds an old motorcycle or car or just a fine nickel plated kerosene lamp from the late 19th Century. Pickers know what’s good, dig it out, dust it off and for the first time in maybe 50 years identify it, price it and try and sell it for what it’s really
Page 16
worth. Mike Wolfe is a real picker, has been for most of his life. And Mike likes to share his finds with John Parham, and the National Motorcycle Museum. Case in point, the Von Dutch XAVW motorcycle Mike Wolfe recently scored. Mike got a call one day from a friend telling him about a Von Dutch motorcycle. Two things probably popped into Mike’s mind. First; BOGUS!, because Von Dutch stuff is so rare. Second; I’d better get there quick before someone else does. And he did. What he found was the bike Von Dutch had built around 1966 along with paperwork that had Ed “Big Daddy” Roth as a past owner. He made a deal on the spot and took the motorcycle home with him. Real pickers don’t fool around when they find something great. What’s so special about the XAVW? Most people know Von Dutch for his artistic classic pinstriping and some know he has painted a few bikes, written some strange prose, made some knives and pretty whacky sculptures. But working with a Harley-Davidson XA, a World War II shaft drive machine that’s relatively rare now, some Moto Guzzi components and a 36 horsepower flat four Volkswagen engine he joined some cool components and built a complete motorcycle. A complete Von Dutch motorcycle. (Continued on page 17)

That’s rare. After showing the bike at TorqueFest in Iowa this summer Mike made a deal with John Parham to lend the bike to the Museum for display. The museum has lots of bikes and memorabilia on loan which keeps things there changing, always new. You can head over to Anamosa, Iowa any day and sit down right beside the bike, study it and consider all the thought and the work Von Dutch put into it. It appears he had to stretch the frame, make it wider to get the VW engine to drop in. Amazingly a lot of other pieces lined up well as he mated the engine to the XA clutch and trans. He even made the kick starter work. Forks are early 50′s Moto Guzzi and the seat may be as well. Visually the components all fit together really well, even the form of the Guzzi fenders connects well with the mid-sixties Honda CB450 gas tank, especially with Von Dutch’s two tone paint and striping. Even the VW badge fits well artistically. But anyone who has done work like this knows the challenges. Looks easy, maybe, but this was a lot of work and the outcome must have made Von Dutch grin. At the Museum the XAVW is parked next to a Triumph Von Dutch painted and some other great Von Dutch creations and
paint work. It’s one of over 400 motorcycles at the NMM, and one of about 30 custom bikes, and in a sense one of the most radical, even if it doesn’t gleam with a ton of chrome. It’s another marker of the accomplishments of one of the most revered artists in the motorcycle and custom car world. Pickers, creatives and visionaries like John Parham come together so you can get side by side with some great Von Dutch creations any day of the week at the National Motorcycle Museum. Here are some specs on the bike: Opposed Flat Four Cylinder, OHV Air-cooled Engine 1200 cc, 36 HP Volkswagen Porsche Bosch Distributor

by Pete Summerfield Our Bug-In started the Tuesday before Easter. We flew to Sydney, were picked up by Chris Harper, (our great mate, and coordinator of the Bug-In), and taken to Penrith where he lives, at the foothills of the Blue Mountains. He made us very welcome, and spent the evening catching up on news, the nerves, and then it was out to the Paceway (trots) for dinner over a couple of wines. A very and entertainment. good start! Wednesday was a fairly busy day Our trip to the Blue Mountains with a trip to the markets to buy started at a reasonable time on Friday, arriving at the Blackheath some goodies for the weekend, Caravan Park just after lunch; the supermarket, and the liquor Bug-In headquarters. The afterstore. Returning home, we de-
noon was spent preparing for the Welcome BBQ. Tents were put up, booze was iced, salads made, and meat prepared. It was great catching up with the usual Buginners, many of whom make it a yearly pilgrimage. Some drive, and some fly, and hire a car. However you arrive, the camaraderie of the Bug-In is next to none. Once the evening arrived, the meat was cooked on the BBQ, the salads served, drinks were consumed, yarns and reminiscing continued, until the cold sent us to bed. Even the locals thought it was cold!
scended on Chris’s shed, to find equipment and gear needed. We had a well earned couple of bevies, and it was out to tea. We started a bit earlier on Thursday with a trip to Scott’s place (Chris’s son) to pick up the trophies, and numerous other things for the weekend, then to the other side of town to pick up an automatic new Beetle on loan for the weekend from Volkswagen Australia. I had the privilege of driving it, but, with all the you beaut wiz bang grizmos, it took both of us a while to figure out

Up early on Saturday morning, and quite fresh to start with, to get ready for the car show at Wentworth Falls, about twenty minutes from Blackheath. It was first in at the car park to get the good parking spots, in this very picturesque venue. The car park overlooked the lake, which made a perfect backdrop for photos of well prepared cars.
Once that was over, we were given instructions on how to get to Leura for lunch. No one had told Chris (organizer), that thousands of others thought Leura was a good place to have lunch. So At midday, a trophy presentation parking cars in various places, we (people’s choice) was made to the all managed to catch up and eat owner of a beautifully prepared lunch, on a perfect day. the end. Everyone enjoyed the food, and as usual, another great Bug-In day came to an end far too quickly. We said our goodnights, and made our own way home.
Light rain and drizzle welcomed us to Sunday. However, we were assured that once we moved away from the Blackheath area, and moved down to the lowlands the weather would be different. The motor sport enthusiasts were going to a club ground in Hampton, and those not partaking, were invited to go to the Jenolan Caves, a bit further down the road. The weather had improved as promised, so a good day lay ahead. We meandered down a winding track, which was very inviting for the rally, and autocross Because it was so busy, everyone enthusiasts. At the bottom of the valley was a clearing, which was all set up with witch’s hats ready for the first event. The ground used was narrow, so, a variety of slalom events were used, including the Hopkirk. A number of flags and witches hats were hit in the six events held before lunch. It made it quite interesting, as there was no clear winner. The presentation evening was held in a lovely old mansion on the scarp over looking Sydney, back at the Wentworth Falls area. What a wonderful venue, and the views were stunning! Chris Harper addressed us as the Bug-In Coordinator, and asked us to be seated, as dinner was about to be served. There was much merriment and laughter, stories of the weekend told, and lovely food and drink. What a way to finish a wonderful weekend. Trophies were handed out to the recipients, and the Bug -In Banner was handed to the Victorians for the 2014 Bug-In.
Hotdogs were served for lunch with a can of cool drink, and it was back into it again. There were two khanacross circuits, a short one around the motorkhana circuit, and the longer one, part of which was the same track we used to enter the venue. Both were great fun. The day had past rapidly, as it does when you are having fun, and all too soon, it was time to pack up and travel back to Blackheath to clean up.
Another Bug-In comes to a close, and another one to look forward to. Thank you, Chris Harper, for coordinating a great weekend. And for all the Buginners who make this such a great event, see you all again next year.
The 2014 National BugIn will be held in Victoria at Easter - 18 April to 21 April. Peter Summerfield’s trophy from the Sunday’s Motorkhana.

THE BUG-IN AFTERMATH It was a leisurely start to Monday, as most people were heading home, and those who weren’t had a rest day. Chris and I had to make a trip to Penrith, to return the Buggy to Scott’s place, and leave the Beetle, so Scott could return it to Volkswagen Australia on Tuesday. We returned by the afternoon, and settled down to a couple of beers and an evening BBQ. Very pleasant! Mudgee is a wine growing area, about ninety km’s north east of

Two podium places in Argentina: Volkswagen retains its WRC lead Volkswagen has celebrated another successful weekend in the FIA World Rally Championship (WRC), extended its lead in the drivers’ and co-drivers’ championship, and retained its position as the number one manufacturer. Sébastien Ogier/Julien Ingrassia (F/F) took second place behind record-breaking world champion Sébastien Loeb (Citroën), claiming their fifth podium place in this season’s WRC after their fifth outing with the Polo R WRC. After starting the final day in Argentina in fourth position, Jari-Matti Latvala/Miikka Anttila (FIN/FIN) fought their way into third place and contributed towards the
team’s success with their second podium finish of the season. With their double victory in the final Power Stage, the two Volkswagen drivers also secured five extra points in the drivers’ competition. One third into the season, Ogier/Ingrassia are now 54 points clear at the top of the drivers’ and co-drivers’ leader board, while Volkswagen is 14 points ahead of Citroën in the manufacturers’ championship. Andreas Mikkelsen/Mikko Markkula (N/FIN) finished the Rally Argentina in eighth place under Rally 2 regulatiuons and achieved some impressive top times in their second event with the Polo
R WRC. Tiny errors make all the difference: Séb beats Séb – Loeb ahead of Ogier The whole rally was a thrilling battle for first place starring Sébastien Ogier in the Polo R WRC and Sébastien Loeb (Citroën). Sébastien Ogier took the lead in the overall rankings early on with best times in five stages, but lost out following a mistake. In the seventh special stage, Ogier missed a braking point, skidded off the course and had to reverse. The error cost him 40 seconds and went some way towards deciding who would win the battle of “Séb vs. Séb”. Sébastien Ogier started the last day of the Rally Argentina with a change of tactics. Instead of attacking mercilessly, the WRC leader maintained his lead over third place until the so-called Power Stage, when the three best teams are awarded extra points. Then he used his choice of tyres – a soft Michelin compound – to seize second position behind his team-mate Jari-Matti Latvala. Jari-Matti Latvala put in an untouchable final spurt on the last day of the Rally Argentina. All four stages on Saturday went to Latvala – including the Power (Continued on page 32)

weather forecasts to the meticulous, reliable work of the mechanics during the eight services and the drivers’ and engineers’ choice of tyres. Right at the start of the rally, Volkswagen Motorsport’s weather team gave the drivers a small advantage: soft tyres were the right choice for Thursday’s rallying. The Volkswagen mechanics had their moment of glory on Friday, keeping the Polo R WRCs in tip-top condition with their perfectly organised service although a number of minor repairs were needed. Then on Saturday, the Volkswagen engineers helped the team to succeed on the final day with a brave but wise decision: Well-oiled wheels: outstandonce again, they were right to ing teamwork secures podium select soft tyres, and this move finishes paved the way for Jari-Matti LatThe Volkswagen team functioned vala to secure a place on the polike well-oiled wheels throughout dium and Sébastien Ogier to finthe Rally Argentina – from precise ish second. Rough roads with violent jolts – the Rally Argentina made different demands of the World Rally Cars than the gravel rallies which preceded it in the 2013 season. Instead of constant vibrations like the ones they endured during the last event in Portugal, the chassis of the Polo R WRCs had to absorb substantial forces. However, the construction of the 315horsepower four-wheel drives from Wolfsburg proved just as tough and fast in the unique conditions of the Rally Argentina: the Volkswagen team won ten of the 14 special stages and bagged eight additional top-three times.
Quotes following day four of the Rally Argentina Jari-Matti Latvala, Volkswagen Polo R WRC #7 “Today was the best day’s rallying since I joined Volkswagen. The team spirit, the car – everything reached a whole new level today, including the driver. I’m absolutely thrilled to be standing on the podium for the first time in Argentina. Things often haven’t gone that well here in the last few years, so I’m really pleased to have achieved my goal. The rally was very exciting and varied. Especially in the final phase, we gave our all to secure third place. All in all, finishing second and third is a great result for the whole team.” Sébastien Ogier, Volkswagen Polo R WRC #8 “Second place is a brilliant result in terms of the world championship and our success was down to the whole team. I need to say a special thank-you to my crew this time – they were a great support. It was an incredibly challenging and difficult rally and my own performance wasn’t entirely flawless. It’s a shame that I couldn’t keep fighting it out against Sébastien Loeb right to the end. I would like to congratulate him on winning. Now it’s time for me to look to the future. We’ve got a test to do before the next rally in Greece. We’ll make further improvements to the Polo R WRC (Continued on page 33)

then so that we can fight for first place again in four weeks’ time.” Andreas Mikkelsen, Volkswagen Polo R WRC #9 “Today was quite a finale and we had several more thrilling duels. We really enjoyed the day and the whole rally. Everything is moving in the right direction – our new system for the pace notes, our changes to the set-up and the results of the special stages. We’re learning more with every metre we cover, and I feel really at home in the Polo R WRC. We’ve still got lots of ideas about what we can do in future rallies to improve further. On Friday afternoon, we deliberately set out to complete the special in a good time. We didn’t expect to record exactly the same time as my team-mate Jari-Matti Latvala though. Unfortunately, we asked too much of the car in the process. It is my job to combine speed with reliability in the coming rallies. I’m already looking forward to tackling that challenge.” Jost Capito, Director of Volkswagen Motorsport “The Rally Argentina showed that the factory teams are very well matched. Every victory is hard won. Our congratulations go to
Sébastien Loeb, who made the fewest mistakes here in Argentina. But we can be very happy with our performance too. As a manufacturer, it feels almost like we’ve won already, having consolidated our lead over our biggest rivals in all of the championships. Every single member of the team made a contribution. I’m proud of everyone. The team has put in a breathtaking performance during the first third of the season. The Rally Argentina was a constant rollercoaster ride – pure adrenaline. There’s certainly no shame in ultimately losing against the nine-times world champion with a new team like ours.” And then there was … ... Jost Capito’s first anniversary. Immediately after the Rally Argentina, he will have been Director of Volkswagen Motorsport for exactly one year. Time for the manager of the factory team from Wolfsburg to take stock: “It
may not be the easiest job, but it’s certainly the most exciting one if you love cars and motorsport. We have achieved something exceptional in the past year.” Limited-edition Polo R WRC road car now available The Polo R WRC road car is almost as exclusive as the rally cars driven by Ogier, Latvala and Mikkelsen: just 2,500 of these high-performance Polos will be sold. The 2.0-litre TSI boasts 220 horsepower and 350 Nm torque, can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/ h in 6.4 seconds and has a maximum speed of 243 km/h. The Enzmann 506 the thrill is back & it’s all new Dr. Emil Enzmann founded the Enzmann Automobile company in 1952. Emil’s vision was a safe, economical, sports car with an emphasis on enjoyable motoring. Today Kari Enzmann carries on the family tradition producing Enzmann 506 cars to order with a variety of engine configurations including Porsche engines and running gear – but where did it all start? Even as far back as the KdfWagen there were special versions of the Beetle or People’s Car being designed. In the prewar and post war years variations ranged from delivery vans and pickups, to ambulances, with some originating from VW workshops and others in private hands. Many of these private concerns became well-known and included Hebműller, Rometsch, Beutler, Wendler, and Dannehauer & Strauss. The Beetle was attractive for these coachbuilders because it had a largely self-contained chassis and driveline; it was also inexpensive and readily available, although the factory was at times, reluctant to sell bare chassis.
This leads us to Emil Enzmann and the Enzmann 506. Emil was one of six brothers and grew up around cars, his family ran a Fiat and Citroen garage near Lucern in Switzerland and this left him with more than a passing interest in cars, which resulted in the birth of a futuristic sports car. The 506 was his creation and was debuted at the 1957 Frankfurt Motor Show. The model designation was taken from the number of the stand at the show. The original version was built of steel around a Beetle chassis but for better performance Emil decided that the production car needed to be lighter, eventually opting for fibreglass. Though common these days, the use of fibreglass was quite innovative in the 1950's. Fibreglass was chosen as it offered Enzmann the chance to make a very light car without sacrificing strength. The list of positives from using fibreglass included corrosion free (no rust), sound deadening (no vibrations), good insulation against warmth and cold, low repair costs, no body deformation, damage remains small, high elasticity, lighter than aluminium and tough as steel. In the endeavour to maximize strength, the car was shaped from a single sheet of fibreglass without doors, the inclusion of which would have weakened the car. In the place of doors unique steps were built into the bodywork. The advantages of a design without doors were said to be increased stiffness and accident protection, large weight saving, ease of entry in tight parking

spots, no rattling doors, and no draughts at knee and waist levels. The construction resulted in the car ending up with a low centre of gravity, as well as feeling sporty, with good handling and was extremely economical. Even driven at high speed its 55-litre safety fuel tank managed 750km between fuel stops. It was ideal for cruising around the mountain passes of its birthplace.
The 506 however was not simply an elegant two-seat spider, Emil was a physician and therefore was interested in driver comfort and safety. This resulted in the car featuring a superb driving position and several safety features not common in the 50's including extensive padding and seatbelts. Because Enzmann was a small firm and built cars to order, no two were constructed with the same specification beyond the basics and one even left the factory on a Porsche Carrera floorpan inheriting considerably more horsepower.

economy offered by the original 1200 VW engine and it was common practise to have an Okrasa high performance unit as found in many Beetles of the period, fitted. By the time production ended in the mid 60's over 100 Enzmanns had been built, but…… At the beginning of the new millennium Emil’s oldest son, Kari and associates, began building the New Enzmann. The New Enzmann team consists of Kari Enzmann, Werner Schreiber, Walter Gossweiler and Erik Ouwersloot.

It is amazing to see a car like this resurrected and opportunities like this are few and far between. If you want to own a beautifully crafted piece of VW history then this is your chance. Originals are very rare and if you were lucky enough to find one for sale you could bet that it would set you back a fair bit more than the new bodies are to sell for. For my money one of these in yellow (my colour choice) with a few choice performance parts would make a great sports car and would really turn heads around town and could end up costing less than any twoseater currently on the market, besides its uniqueness.
