Message from the Editor / Membership Officer... I am back from attending the 2014 National Bug-In in Victoria over the Easter weekend, and the events ‘Road Trip’ through to Anzac Day. This was part of my 5-6 week trip across the Nullabor, camping in my 1983 Kombi and enjoying the life on the road. Unfortunately that has meant the May magazine being amalgamated with Junes for this May-June magazine and it being a little late as I get back into my routine with club matters. This also affected our new members, which I have contacted individually. I am catching up with your applications, processing payments and getting your “new membership packages” out. Thank you everybody for your patience.

Dear Members, as the financial year comes to an end us committee members start to get busy. Memberships are due with renewals to go out, the Annual General Meeting is only around the corner and plans for this year’s Day of the Volkswagen are beginning. Also, year next year is our club’s 60th Anniversary. The following year is our turn to host the National Bug In. On top of that we have monthly runs planned not just for this year but dates are being locked in for next year too. I say it a lot and I’ll continue to – it is so rewarding when you turn up to these events. I personally love meeting and chatting to new people especially those with a shared interest. Alfreds was huge this month. If you don’t know what I am talking about when I say Alfreds, we have been meeting there (Alfreds Kitchen, Guildford road in Guildford) on the evening of the first Wednesday of every month for nearly 5 years and each and every month we have a great crowd. Fairbridge Festival this year was massive too, a huge thanks to Kim and Woody Shurman for allowing us the privilege of having “Volksville” special camping area near to all the action of the festival. The club tent really was a focal point especially sheltering from the rain. Then there was the recent York trip with 35 people camping over (full report in next month’s mag). So members thank you for making this a rewarding position that I have held now for a few years. Please come along to the AGM to have your vote, maybe put your hand up for one of the roles on the committee or just come for the tea and biscuits and listen to the reports. The forum is there for you to have your say and give direct feedback or simply to see what everyone is up to. There are build threads, event chat and reports, a classified section, spotted, and plenty of pictures of member’s rides or projects. Have fun be safe on the roads. Jamie Barrett Club President

Fairbridge: 27th April 2014 Back on deck and wow what a weekend...or should I say week ,for me. Warm sunny days to do the set up, a bit of rain to settle the dust, some awesome entertainment, happy punters and a great VW crew. A huge thanks goes out to Tina, Dave, Jamie and Graham for your fantastic effort with the Monday bump out and pack down, in record time. We really value and greatly appreciate your time and hard yakka. Numbers were good, no idiots and everything worked as we had planned, with no major dramas.... you know how it goes at good music festivals, heat and dust or puddle jumping! If you couldn't make it this year, we'd love to see you next year, in the new Volksville area. 10-12th April 2015 Kim Shurman

thAnniversary 1955 - 2015
1955 was a milestone for Volkswagen in more ways than one. It was the year that the millionth VW Beetle was produced and it coincided with the formation of our Volkswagen Club of Western Australia (Inc). Next year will see the club celebrate it’s 60th year, making it one of the oldest “name” car clubs in Australia. Your club committee has commenced making preparations for the year of celebrations and to include you, our members, we start with running a LOGO competition and we are looking for your ideas/ suggestions (e.g. events, merchandise etc) to help make the 60th year a memorable one.
LOGO competition...win a $60 voucher
The committee is looking for a LOGO to identify and acknowledge THE CLUB and also the 60 YEARS. Sometimes the simplest is the best...you can produce a complete logo or provide a sketch or even just a concept. The winning logo design/concept will be decided by the club committee and become the property of the club. The winner will receive a $60 voucher to spend on club merchandise...this can be used on current stock or maybe on new 60th Anniversary items. Entries can be sent to our PO BOX addressed as “60 Years Logo” or emailed here to viawest@vwclubwa.com.au with a subject matter of “60 Years Logo”...entries close last mail received on 18th July 2014. At the top of the page is the club’s official logo...below are the current 3D logo, the 50th Anniversary of VW in Australia (2003) and the club’s 50th Anniversary logo (2005)...these may help you with an idea.
IDEAS, suggestions...events, merchandise etc.
What EVENTS would you like to see...some suggestions listed?
Camping w/e
Family Day BBQ
Formal Dinner
Special Cruise
Road Trip
Country based event
What MERCHANDISE would you like to see...some suggestions listed?
Do you…
Polo/Tee Shirt
Jacket
want to be involved in the organisation for the year?
Stubbie Holder
Cap/Hat
Pen
Car badge/sticker
have an idea or two to help celebrate 60 years?
This is your club, so the committee is keen to hear from you, our members.
Your Ideas and Suggestions can be sent to our PO BOX addressed as “60 Years of Ideas” or emailed here to viawest@vwclubwa.com.au with a subject matter of “60 Years of Ideas”...the sooner you get your idea/suggestion in, the quicker it will be considered.

Sunday 8th June…
Kim Muste
The great thing was that they only bought the camper yesterday.
June meet saw 3 regulars turn up and a local driving past in a bay camper who stopped to join in.
Sunday 12th April... Busso meet on Sunday was a good one including a couple of new local folks with an early type 3 wagon (this one was in the movie Drift). There was a pink early beetle soon to have some resto work done and also visiting was a Perth VW engine and gearbox builder
who delivered a rebuilt motor to one of the gang.
Sunday 11th May… The May meet on Sunday the 11th just happened to be on Mothers Day...again...I couldn't make it along.
Gatherings in Recess… Well the SW meets will be put on hold over the winter so the one on 8th June was the last until the weather fines up. They should start again either October or November. Remember that the drive in weekend or similar will be on again at the end of October/start of November, keep on eye on the magazine and the forum. Thank you to everybody that has attended this years meets and in the meantime hope to see you on the streets in and around the South West...keep on dubbing. ...Kim

Whiteman Park: 27th April Well the day started off bad, I got up an hour earlier than I needed, half way to the park I realized I'd forgotten my camera, surely it couldn't get much worse. I met some great vee-dub guys, talked the talk. Our small but great stand was VERY busy, even though we were tucked out of the way. Some of the Mini guys even came over and said they missed us! The weather wasn't brilliant, we did get wet, but we still smiled. We enjoyed a really good day of chatting and cars! ...thanks Jon

Page 20 After we had finished eating, Gary and Lesley Collis, our hosts, welcomed us, and gave us the itinerary for the weekend. There were several selections over the weekend, which would hopefully keep everyone happy. All too soon the evening came to a close, and everyone made their way home.
BUG-IN 2014 GEELONG, VICTORIA
Venue for the Friday Night’s Welcome Dinner and get together.
There were five West Aussies attending this year, Ray Willis and Merrick and Karla Paget, who drove over, and Pete and Trish Summerfield, who flew over.
Saturday was overcast and windy, but, dry, which was good for the car show. It was being held on a grassed area at the water front, again a picturesque venue. It also had cafes and eateries next door, and for the ladies, the shops and the main streets were within walking distance. There were the usual BugIn entrants in the car show, and some unusual local entrants.
After catching up with all the news, we headed off to Geelong Wharf area to the evenings venue. It was a seafood restaurant over the water, looking out over Wedge & Big Bird at the Show-n-Shine the bay. A great location! We registered on arrival, and met up with Ray, Merrick and Karla, and There were about twenty five enthe rest of the Bugginners. It was trants, and all were well presented, including Ray’s and Merrick Ray’s Wedge and Karla and Merrick’s Big great catching up with everyone, Bird at Eucla on the way to the Bug-in. and Karla’s Kombi’s. and hearing all their news. It is amazing how quickly time goes Trish and I arrived in Geelong on when you are Thursday afternoon with fellow Ray Willis, having fun! In Bugginners, Wayne and Elaine Pete and Trish Summerfield, Karla and Merrick Paget Ferguson from Brisbane. We were what seemed no time, food unable to book into the Bug-In caravan park, so we booked into was served, a park not far away. As the Bug- and everyone In didn’t start until three o/clock agreed, the seafood dishes on Friday afternoon, we decided were superb. to go on a sightseeing trip down What a great the coast along the Great Ocean venue; great Road to Lorne. The RSL Club night...
The Go-Karts… (Continued from page 20)
After lunch, the choice was a boat trip on the bay, or a go-cart session. Most went on the sedate boat trip, however the revheads opted for the go-carts. Karla came to the go-carts as an observer, while Merrick, Mal, Wayne, Gary, and I, all went for a ride. It is amazing how aggressive you get when you get behind the wheel of a go-cart. I knew Mal, Gary and Wayne were forces to be reckoned with. But, not having seen Merrick drive in competition, he really has got the killer instinct, and boy, watch out if you are in his way!! There were some good tussles in the twenty five laps, with Wayne and Gary very close. Merrick and I had a few altercations as who had right of way, as we all did, but all came away with big smiles on our faces. A great afternoon! The Boat Trip...
The boat trip was successful, and all who went on the cruise were pleased with what they saw. Once we were all back, a quick clean up, and it was off to the local RSL Club nearby to enjoy a nice meal, and brag about the activities during the day; car show verses go-carts. The camaraderie within the Bugginners is second to none, and the banter and jokes just flowed all night. A great night was had by all. Sunday was an early start for the motorkhana participants, and again Geelong put on a very
pleasant sunny day with a light wind. Perfect conditions for a motorkhana. We proceeded to the Geelong Motorsport Complex, (which is next door to the Avalon Airport), booked in and filled in all the paper work. Then with ten entrants, we started. We were all a bit tentative to start with as the surface was very smooth and a little slippery. However, the more events we completed the more confident we became and the quicker we got. We competed in six events and we all had a good fun. Some hit flags and went the wrong way, but in the end we all had big smiles on our faces. A bbq lunch was served, thanks to Gary Collis, and then it was the start of the autocross. There were seven entrants in this event in three cars. Mal, Wayne and I used Mal’s Beetle, so the poor car didn’t stop all day! As soon as one of us finished a run, the next one would jump in and do a cir(Continued on page 25)

cuit. More smiley faces at the end, and the consensus was everyone had a great day. Thanks to Henny Southam of the S.A. Club for organising a great event. Sorry no Motorkhana photos when this went to press‌ While we were enjoying ourselves on the track, the others went on a steam train ride, and a sightseeing tour around Geelong. Trish, Ray, Merrick and Karla enjoyed this part of the Bug-In. Day tour and train trip to Queenscliffe...
So it was back to the caravan park to get cleaned up ready for the presentation dinner held at a German restaurant. Beersteins, and umpapa music created the mood for a great night full hilarity and merriment. And that is exactly what happened. Everyone joined in, and the place was full of laughter, singing and dancing.

South Australia won the trophy for the club with the “Best Bug-In Spirit”; Wayne Ferguson (Qld) fastest gocart, Maris (SA) best in Car Show; and the motorkhana, 1st Mal Dodd (SA), 2nd Pete Summerfield (WA), 3rd Tim Hosie (Vic), 4th Henny Southam (SA).
A job well done! The camaraderie shown at BugIn’s is infectious, and is something you go back for year after year. As usual, we all enjoyed ourselves and are looking forward to next year when the Bug-In is in Brisbane. Pete Summerfield Footnote:
The final official part of the night was the ‘hand over’ of the Bug-In flag to next year’s host - Queensland. This was accepted by Wayne Ferguson on behalf of the Volkswagen Drivers Club of Queensland
The 47th National Bug-In is coming to WA in 2016. The 2011 Toodyay Bug-In was an outstanding success. Book your calendars now for Easter 2016...25th to 29th March 2016, and there will be a road trip afterwards...
The following day was time to say goodbyes to most and this was at a BBQ breakfast held in the caravan park. Some of us were going home while others were going onto the Bug-In Road Trip for another 4 days.

Golf GTI Performance arrives in Australia Golf GTI Performance launches with new front differential lock, upgraded brakes and additional standard features The Golf GTI line-up in Australia is now complemented by a new, heightened performance model. Adding to the seventh generation Golf GTI’s impressive list of performance and comfort-based features, the Golf GTI Performance comes standard with unique visual and technical equipment, setting it apart from the standard version. Extended performance features. On its exterior, the Golf GTI Performance differs from the standard GTI by its GTI logo on the front brake calipers. The brake package for the GTI Performance has been upgraded along with the increased engine output (169kW), the ventilated brakes discs are 28mm larger at 340mm, while the rear discs are now also ventilated and 10mm larger at 310mm in diameter. Technical features of the Golf GTI Performance also include a newly developed front differential lock.
GTI Performance has a variable degree of locking and comprehensive interfaces to ESP, EDL and XDL functions. This makes it possible to avoid negative effects on steering handling or steering precision that otherwise occurs with mechanical locks. As a result, the system realises the full potential and maximum performance of a differential lock with regard to vehicle dynamics, ensuring comfort is not impaired.

Unlike most awards which are allocated according to the views of a panel of judges, the HonestJohn.co.uk awards recognise and reward the cars, classics and vans that HonestJohn.co.uk users search for most on the site; put simply, the reviews which create the most interest among the website’s users are the winners. The data to measure this is taken from Google Analytics and calculates the number of page views each review has had over the 12 months from April 2013 to April 2014. The site gets around 1.6 million visits every month with the majority of these users viewing car reviews. The seventh-generation Volkswagen Golf was launched in the UK in January 2013 and since then has claimed a raft of top accolades and titles, including World Car of the Year and European Car of the Year.
The HonestJohn.co.uk website was set up in 2000 to help consumers with advice on buying, selling and running cars. Since then Honest John himself has answered more than 650,000 questions.

Another reason this trip to Portugal has been so worthwhile for me is that it is great to experience the enthusiasm of the many fans lining the route and cheering our drivers on so magnificently.” From Australia to Portugal – a winning run to go down in WRC history. 06 April 2014 Volkswagen claimed a hardfought win at the toughest rally of the year. In difficult, variable conditions, defending champions Sébastien Ogier/Julien Ingrassia (F/F) secured the fourth victory of the 2014 FIA World Rally Championship for the Polo R WRC – the eighth in a row for Volkswagen including the events at the end of last season. The duo’s 19th triumph was far from a walk in the park – the Rally Portugal featured three different manufacturers on the podium, duels that came down to tenths of a second, and three different leaders over the course of the rally. The Volkswagen pairing of Andreas Mikkelsen/Mikko Markkula (N/ FIN) ended the rally fourth overall. Jari-Matti Latvala/Miikka Anttila (FIN/FIN) fought back after a crash on Friday. In doing so, they picked up valuable points in the Manufacturers’ Championship and finished runner-up behind Sébastien Ogier on the closing Power Stage, on which bonus points were up for grabs for the fastest three drivers.
“The Rally Portugal was just as we expected – difficult for the team and drivers, but ultimately successful,” said a delighted Dr. Heinz-Jakob Neußer, Volkswagen Board Member for Technical Development. “Our duo of Ogier/ Ingrassia once again showed their class in difficult conditions. But the team also did another fantastic job. The way they managed to get Jari-Matti Latvala’s back up and running within the allotted time after his crash was mighty

Rally Car from Wolfsburg has now equalled that record. Anniversaries and celebratory arias: the numbers behind the victory in Portugal Volkswagen celebrated another milestone in the history of the Polo R WRC at the Rally Portugal. The 315-hp four wheel-drive powerhouse contested its 300th special stage on Friday. Just as it had on its previous anniversaries – 50, 100, 150 and 250 – the Polo R WRC celebrated its latest achievement with another stage win. Seven special stages later it had brought up another milestone: the 200th stage win since making its debut in 2013. By the end of the Rally Portugal, Volkswagen had won 204 of the 312 special stages it has contested since the start of last season – a success rate of 65 per cent. Of 850 possible top-three times, 459 have gone to the Polo R WRC. Sébastien Ogier/Julien Ingrassia’s victory marked the 24th podium and 14th win in 17 rallies since 2013 for Volkswagen.

the gap in the World Championship standings to 24 points. The backbone of the team: Volkswagen’s service mechanics are the key to success The Rally Argentina is not just a WRC classic – it also has a reputation for being the toughest test of both man and machine. In 2014, heavy rain and storms in the weeks leading up to the event meant the tracks were badly eroded and very rough. Countless cross-ditches and deep potholes put all of the teams’ World Rally Cars to the test. However, the Volkswagen drivers’ equipment remained in great shape throughout the competition, thanks to the team’s service crews. Volkswagen’s experienced mechanics used the three services on each day of the rally – one in the morning (15 minutes), one at lunchtime (30 minutes) and one in the evening (45 minutes) – to make sure the three Polo R WRCs were always ready to face the forthcoming stages.

The 25year-old from Chandigarh (IND) won the opening race at the Kari Motor Speedway in Coimbatore (IND) and finished runner-up behind Bonnie Thomas (IND) in race two. Matharoo, who finished third overall in last season’s Volkswagen Polo-Cup, benefitted from a breach of the rules in race one by would-be winner Karminder Pal Singh (IND), who was adjudged to have overtaken during a yellow flag phase on lap ten of an eventful race and was subsequently handed a 30second penalty by the stewards. Several collisions occurred shortly after the start, resulting in the race being interrupted. In race two, rookie Thomas was the man to beat. This was the first victory in the Volkswagen Polo-Cup for the 33-year-old rally driver. Thomas is currently second in the overall standings with 43 points, behind Matharoo (54).

This was also the first triumph by a Golf GTI this year. Rookie Lucas Orrock (GB) finished runner-up, ahead of the youngest driver in the series Sam Morgan (GB). In the second race, it took Mason just four laps to storm from eleventh on the grid to the front of the field.
