Our annual show is upon us now and arrangements are all but complete. Please note that this year we will be enforcing the locked gate policy to stop movement of vehicles during the show. This is in the interest of everyoneâ€&#x;s safety on the day.
2010 Shannons Day of the Volkswagen
ENTRY - Gates will be open from 9:00am to 11:00am (after which time they will be locked). EXIT - Gates will re-open from 3:00pm onwards (no vehicle shall be moved from the display area until after trophy presentations). This year we have a variety of food and other stalls, as well as a Bouncy Castle for the kids. We have also arranged for a First Aid post on site. Again this is in the interest of everyoneâ€&#x;s well being on the day. The club tent will have merchandise for sale and order forms will be available when stock runs out. We look forward to all our members being there and making it a great day. As usual we will need volunteers on the day to help share the load around and let everybody, including club members and committee, some time to enjoy the day. I hope you have an enjoyable day and i would like to take this opportunity to thank the committee for their time and effort in putting the show together. Ray Willis

The committee is saddened to advise members that two of our friends have passed away in the past few weeks. Both were taken by cancer
Neil Cameron
Manfred Gasselstorfer (Fred)
Neil and his family have been members of the VW Club since the mid 1990‟s and have attended many club outings despite living in Albany. The fondest of recent memories was the club weekend in Bridgetown in 2008. Neil farmed for many years, then spent most of his retired years in his shed playing with his collection of VW‟s that included a variety of models. He passed away on 30th September 2010 – a victim of cancer. Our love and thoughts are with his wife Lorraine, son Ross and the rest of the family.
Fred came to Australia from Austria in 1963 and became a VW Club member a number of years ago. He became an Aussie 4 years ago. For those who can‟t put a face to Fred, he was the guy who had the club plate VWBUG59, was larger than life at the Day of The Volkswagen and regularly ran the score sheets from the judges to the scorer. He very much enjoyed coming to the annual show and his absence will be sadly missed. Fred reached 70 before succumbing to cancer on 21st September. Our love and thoughts are with Fred‟s wife Susan, Paul and Heidi, and Fred‟s 90year-old mother and family in Austria.

...different kind of Bugs! by Peter Summerfield Translated from my brother's letter that came with the pictures . He lives in Tennessee so some of the description may seem a little odd (ie the word "trafficators"!) The VW, called “Double Header”, was a clown car in Atlanta – used to entertain children at special vents. Owned by a rich guy who lost interest (he probably bought a yacht and sailed the world!) When the current owner bought it home it was covered in algae from being left out in the weather. That was circa 1987. Well, the car cleaned up beautifully! The “T” was added ("University of Tennessee" ) and the motor was replaced in 1973 - 1600cc. The front is late ‟72 – curved windshield, the rear is early ‟73 – flat windshield. Fore and aft the steering wheel, dash, gauges, pedals, gear shift are identical. The rear steering wheel turns without wheel movement. This fact gets smiley faces, especially in reverse, with the rear driver feverishly turning the wheel! Trafficators and blinkers work and in reverse mode back-up lights are the headlights on full beam! Brake light on top of rear dash shines red for 3rd brake light. Rear fender lights are red (regulation). This car is housed in Loudon, about 8 miles from Lenoir City, Tennessee. The Scorpion is in a garage 150mtrs down the street from where my brother lives and PVC pipe supported, electrically operated pincers have been added. Children love to get “bitten” by the scorpion!

race at Bathurst!
What is the FVAWA?
FWAWA Bathurst 2009: #88 Ben Riley
Maybe it‟s time to reconsider… Think you‟re too old to start now? Maybe not – so long as you are in good health. Think it‟s too expensive? Yes, you need disposable income, but you could be out on the track for an investment of $10,000 plus $5,000 per year operating costs. Think you are too young? Again maybe not, you could be on the track at the age of 16, and if you have suitable go-kart experience it is possible to race at 14. Two FVAWA Members (both racing themselves) also have their children racing.
The CAMS entry level open wheel category has existed for over 40 years. The great thing is that little has changed. A well set-up used car is often just as competitive as new brand new car. The reason for that is that the rules inhibit expensive new technology.
The Formula Vee Association of Western Australia is a branch of the Formula Vee Association. Formula Vee is a world-wide category. The association members share knowledge and help newcomers in particular. The FVAWA is unique at Barbagallo Raceway in that it has it‟s own area of Pit Bays were members can socialise and help each other. Barbagallo Raceway is operated by the WA Sporting Car Club (WASCC). Visit: www.wascc.com.au
What kind of people join the FVAWA?
FWAWA Bathurst 2009: #23 Bruce Welsh with the infamous cardboard umbrella
The uniting factor is appreciation of good racing. Passion for the sport is important. Members vary widely in age and profession, but include the following: Policeman, Fighter Pilot, Property Manager, Instrumentation Engineers etc. Some are ex-Go Kart Racers „moving up‟. For some it‟s their 1st racing experience.
So, it‟s potentially on for young and old, and what a great family activity.
Why Formula Vee and what makes it so Cost Effective?

Some have mechanical aptitude and knowledge. Others (like the author) do not. FWAWA Bathurst 2009: #23 Bruce Welsh with Derek Burns in pursuit
Consistency of approach keeps costly changes to a minimum, and older cars remain competitive. As an entry level class, greater emphasis is placed upon a driver‟s skill than the depth of his pocket. The class still

Many are accompanied by wives, children, girlfriends (but rarely all three). Some are determined, others race for fun and camaraderie.

The accolade, awarded for the first time this year, was judged by the highly regarded panel, representing 23 countries, that elects the prestigious International Van of the Year awards. During the judging process, the Amarok was praised by the jury for its „effortless off-road abilities‟, while its capacity on-road was judged to be the best against all other competitors. The jury was also impressed by the Amarok‟s interior, in particular, the layout and generous space for both front and rear passengers in the double-cab cabin. On the Amarok‟s success, the jury commented: „The new Volkswagen Amarok distinguishes itself by fantastic driving qualities, both on- and offroad. Volkswagen Eos Receives Engine Update With the arrival of the new model year 2011, the Volkswagen Eos will be treated to an engine upgrade, which sees the Eos deliver the same power output as the acclaimed Golf GTI. With the arrival of the MY11 Eos, it now features the 2.0 litre four-cylinder TSI petrol engine with a power 155kW output, which allows the vehicle to accelerate from standstill to 100km/h in 7.8 seconds. Maximum torque – 280 Nm – is delivered between 1,700 and 5,200 rpm, an exceptionally wide range to provide excellent in-gear performance and keen throttle response. The Eos is available with a six-speed manual or six-speed DSG transmission. Emissions of CO2 are 173 g/km (DSG: 184 g/km) and fuel consumption is just 7.4L/100km (DSG: 7.9 L/100km).
The Volkswagen Eos is also still available as a 2.0 litre four-cylinder 103kW diesel paired with either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed DSG gearbox. Model Year 2011 also gives the Eos some other enhancements like standard Vienna leather upholstery with heated front seats, new 17” alloy wheels and a range of new exterior colours combined with new chrome grille strips and cherry red tail lights. Every manual Eos now also comes with standard Hill Start Assist (HSA), which holds the vehicle when the foot brake is released by temporarily locking the brake pressure (for a maximum of 1.5 seconds) to provide comfortable starting-off without rolling back. Hill Start Assist (HSA) operates on inclines greater than 5%.
The Eos‟s TSI engine offers new features including modified pistons and piston rings, new induction system and a high-pressure fuel pump. This engine was designed for Euro V compliance, lower CO2 emissions, fuel efficiency, ease of servicing and “packaging”. Lithium-ion battery The concept car‟s 30 battery modules consisting of 180 lithium-ion cells (energy capacity: 26.5 kWh) were installed in spaces adapted to the vehicle architecture. They can be found in the floor of the bootspace (fully usable cargo capacity: 275 litres), under the rear bench seat and in the centre tunnel of the underbody (between the front seats). A separate air cooling system ensures a constant thermal environment in the battery compartment. The battery modules weigh a total of 315 kilograms. Instruments tailored to electric driving The driver can see how much energy is being demanded by the “electric pedal” at any given moment on the kW gauge (replaces the classic tachometre); drivers strive to keep the kW reading as low as possible practically intuitively. A range indicator is also integrated in this round instrument. The speedometer, located on the right side as usual, integrates another small gauge that provides information on the battery charge state. Individual choices in battery regeneration A new feature is the display of regeneration intensity in the multifunction display between the kW instrument and the speedometer. In battery regeneration, the driver has the option of pre-setting the braking energy recovery strategy over four stages (D to D3) via the automatic gearshift lever or gearshift paddles on the steering wheel. In the lowest stage (D), the car (Continued on page 24)

“sails” as soon as the driver‟s foot leaves the “electric pedal” – now the Golf blue-e-motion moves with very low drag; it is only “slowed” by the rolling resistance of the tyres and air resistance. In the D3 stage, or B for braking, on the other hand, the maximum amount of kinetic energy is recovered and fed to the battery. In addition, the electrical energy consumption of the automatic climate control unit and its blower can be called up in the multifunction display. Three driving profiles control comfort, dynamics and range In addition, an active driving profile can be set; this lets the driver select priorities in advance: between maximum range, maximum comfort and maximum dynamics. The selected profile then pre-configures the power of the electric motor, air conditioning control, maximum speed and battery regeneration strategy. The Golf blue-e-motion offers the three profiles “Normal,” “Comfort+” and “Range+.” In the “Comfort+” profile, the full 85 kW of power is available; in this mode the Golf blue-emotion can attain the specified top speed of 135 km/h. When the driver activates the “Normal” mode, power is reduced to 65 kW and top speed is lowered to 115 km/h. In the “Range+” mode the engine controller limits power to 50 kW; in this case, the car can reach a maximum speed of 105 km/h. At the same time, the air conditioning system is completely deacti-

vated. The selected profile is shown in the multifunction display. Full charging via the VW logo The Golf blue-emotion is charged via a plug connector behind the folding VW logo on the radiator grille. A pictogram of a plug connector in the multifunction display indicates that the charging cable is correctly inserted and locked. During active charging an LED also flashes in the charge state indicator, and the charge level shown in the indicator is continually updated. Packaging of the drive system All key primary and secondary drive components were integrated in the front engine compartment. In arriving at this design, developers applied experience they had gained in numerous design studies. As in the Up! blue-e-motion concept car, for example, an integral form of electric drive is used in the Golf blue-e -motion. Core components of the integral drive are the lightweight 80 kg electric motor together with a transmission and differential. Energy man-
agement is handled by a high-voltage pulse-controlled inverter that is integrated in the compact integral drive along with the 12 Volt electrical system‟s DC/DC converter and charging module. The entire unit is relatively light and compact; the five-door and five-seat Golf blue-e-motion weighs just 205 kg more than a comparable Golf BlueMotion TDI with DSG – despite the fact that electric car batteries are known to be heavy and weigh 1,545 kg in the concept car. Yet, the car‟s safety properties are identical.

Already, this is a car that lives up to all the expectations that come with being a Golf; it's refined, a joy to drive and supremely practical. This should guarantee a great story for the readers of What Car? and whatcar.com.' In addition to the winning Golf, Volkswagen also entered a standard Golf and a Polo BlueMotion. Powered by TDI engines, both vehicles also made a big impression. According to the testers, they are better than some of the hybrid systems available at present. This is also impressively shown by the current record holder in the 2010 Guinness World Records - the Passat BlueMotion covered a distance of 2,463.91 kilometres on just one tank of fuel. Its 1.6-litre TDI engine (77 kW / 105 PS) thus consumed on average just 3.13 litres per 100 km.
