Editors Note

Thank you all for the positive emails and articles being sent in. If you have something to share (big or small) drop an email to me. I met Ozzy (an Englishman) this month at Alfreds. He sent in a story. His Split Screen looked a bit different to what it did in this picture. It has been an huge project and I am sure it was character building too...! Well done Ozzy! More on this bus in the mag. I am still learning InDesign which is the Adobe package used to put this all together, and still enjoying the process - I hope you enjoy reading and looking at the pictures!

APRIL 2017

President’s Spot Dear Members and Readers, Munster5 Cruise and camp is right upon us! The camp ground is prepared, the band is booked and the Garage Display set! So get yourself along this Saturday, 25th March, to the coolest event of the year. If you joined in the fun last year NOTE that the starting meeting point is a bit further north at Hillaries. Really looking forward to this - The band are really worth seeing too.... Let alone DJ BJ. The Campout at the Estuary Caravan Park in Mandurah was popular which saw some new comers. The pictures look great and thanks to the Moores for putting the pictures and write up together for us. The Albany Classic Car Event is being held on the first weekend in June, Thor Ansen has organised with the local caravan park to hold 20 spots for our club - They will only hold these spots for a short period so get in quick to ensure you get a place. While I am on the subject of Club Events - We were advised by John Hornby that the Country Buggy (you should all be familiar now what a CB is - due to Johns excellent article in the last edition) well the Country Buggys 50th Anniversary is this year - Our aim is to get as many CBs to the Day of the Volkswagen this year! We don’t mind if they are running or rusting! So if you have one (or more tucked away) please get them along to the show in December. A little reminder that we have the forum on our website and also the facebook page for you all to seek help or answer any technical questions you may have. The forum is a little quiet right now so jump on and contribute there. Some good projects are running and new members like to say Hi on there too - so make them welcome. I have heard that a good supporter - not only of our Club, but the VW community here in WA - is not too well - We wish Gerry Prosser all the best and quick recovery. Our ageing, tired, heavy (sounds like me) Club Trailer is finally getting replaced. We have talked about this for some time now but Dave has done the homework for us. It’ll be lighter, safer and more practical to tow and use. Being primarily of aluminium construction, it’ll last for years to come and it will look the business! To end with some great news. We clicked over 190 members this month. So a big welcome and thanks to everyone that supports our great Club. Have a lovely and safe Easter. See you out there! Jamie Barrett Club President

What got you into Volkswagens?

Fish and chips!

It was a normal night back in ole Blighty. I went out to get some supper from my local chippy. I placed my order for some fish and chips. The wait was ten minutes, so I wandered up the road to kill the time. I just happened to glance in the newsagent’s window and an advert for a Beetle for sale popped out at me. The paint job was loud! It was taxed and tested and was only 300 pounds! Well I came home with more than just supper!

T

he next dabble was with a friends Beetle in my garage. I was welding it up for him. Well it turns out his budget had worn pretty thin while I was away, so I ended up taking ownership of the Bug to settle things up. While I was travelling in Oz I came across a Beetle Ute in Freo.

S

ome years later I was on the hunt for another classic car. I was particularly looking for a wagon to use as a parts hauler. Scrolling through the classifieds I was on the lookout for a 1960’s Volvo Amazon wagon. I found a couple but they were too much of a project themselves. Anyway carrying on the hunt I stumbled across a Type 3 wagon. I’d never even seen one before! Looks pretty cool I thought, so I went and checked it out. It was an early 1963 push button dash, left hand drive Squareback recently imported from Austria.

I

took it out for a test drive and I would say this was the moment the hook of the Volkswagon really dug in! This was to be my daily driver for some time and believe it or not it was six months before I even saw another wagon and that was when we took it to our first VW show at Sandown Park.

T

hat Ute inspired me to have a go at making my own. I didn’t really know too much about Beetles at the time, curved screen, flat screen etc, a Beetle is a Beetle is a Beetle, right? Anyway chop, chop was in order. I got it through its MOT and drove it around for a while before moving it on.

D

ave is now hooked more than ever and works on VOlkswagens almost every day - Infact he has built a business around them here in Perth. If you need some welding see his advert in this magazine.

SID Dear Editor, I thought I’d send you some pics of my recently finished 1960 bus, (Sid). I dragged him out of a paddock in Quarading about 8 yrs ago. He’d been sitting under a tree for the best part of 30yrs after some travellers left it there after working for the farmer. I’d put a wanted ad in the Quokka for a Split Screen and almost given up hope when he rang me. He was going to send it to the scrap yard along with a bunch of other cars he had. Long story short we drove out one Sunday morning and I bought it for 2k. Once back in Perth I found someone that would take it on as a long term project. Bobby Collier from Restore and Repair in Bibra lake was the lucky man. Once it was sand blasted we realised what a mammoth mission this was going to be. It looked like a lump of Swiss cheese. It had a lot more rust in it than we first thought, however I committed to going ahead. This is where Sid got his name after “Sid Vicious”, because it was so viciously bad. Little did he or I know that due to my wife and I having our 3rd and 4th child and moving 4 times over the next 8 yrs would this drag on for so long.

Sid nearly didn’t make it, 3 yrs ago we hit a bad patch and advertised him on gumtree, a guy from Sydney had a 40k cheque ready and a flight on standby but fortunately I managed to convince the wife it was a bad idea and I worked my way out of it! Sid got licensed in December. I was the happiest man alive that day! I finally made it to DOTVW this year which was a great day out.

There’s still plenty to do to get him finished and Sid Bobby was very understanding throughout and kept is by no means perfect or a show winner but the fact it at his workshop for the whole time until it was that I’ve got my Splitty and saved him from the scrap painted. heap makes it all the more special. Cheers Richard, aka Ozzy

O

ur preparation for being the official paparazzi for the weekend was to charge the camera and clear the memory card and to spend numerous hours reading camera reviews to replace our camera which was a lot more complex than we expected so unfortunately we haven’t got our new camera yet. We headed off from Mundaring unusually as a cruise of 1, we collected Andy in his mango green splitty shortly after and continued down the hill and on to the cruise meeting point on freeway.

“One by one, more V-Dubs showed up”

O

ne by one, more V-Dubs showed up until it was time to head off again. Jo gave a quick run down of the route and we rolled out. As we have a CB radio we took up the rear so we could keep in contact with Jo at the front and keep the convoy together. Heading down the freeway we collected Daryl and Donna in their very cool looking splitty ute. Apart from a few red lights separating the convoy a few times, the cruise went without a hitch.

“the cruise went without a hitch”

A

fter the simplest caravan park check-in ever we parked up amongst the trees and all the different set ups quickly made an appearance including gazebos, awnings, tents and a tent on a ute and GMac open cargo door and get a beer from the esky. The very unseasonably weather we have recently experienced was nowhere in sight and the normal summer heat graced us with its presence at 34 degrees. This meant the next order of business was cooling down!! A few people headed off to check out the estuary by the time we were ready to head over ourselves they had reported back it was a bit murky so we all trundled off to the pool instead. The cool water was very welcome after the heat on the drive. On my way back to camp I stumbled across Dave getting a demo of Weldalloy brazing rods from a camp resident. I was given a demo too although it was a bit wasted on me!

B

ack in camp a couple of late comers had arrived bring the camp total to 16. It was very chilled out in camp with lots of chatting and drinking and a few new faces in the circle. As the evening drew in the temperature dropped to a very pleasant level no tucking up required. As night appeared so did the possums and a spider that decided to come down from the tree and attach its web to my chair, needless to say I was not

having that so I broke it off but even so I was not happy sitting back in the seat knowing he was right above me. Dave switched seats with me and before long the spider re attached himself to the chair although with the torch spotlight on him he probably had temporary blindness.

G I

radually people started heading off to bed leaving the usual crowd up into the wee hours.

t was an early start for most and it wasn’t long before the heat of the sun was felt, promising another hot day ahead. It was a very leisurely morning just chillin round camp.

D

ave and I decided to head home so Dave could give Gulliver some more attention and I could carry on restoring my kitchenette. To find out what’s been happening to Gulliver see “Gulliver’s transformation - Part Two” We made the rounds saying our goodbyes then headed home stopping at the Miami Bakery for Dave to get his carb fix.

A

nother great trip with great company - looking forward to the Munster Cruise.

Fairbridge Festival .....is a fun filled family weekend held in April near Pinjarra (an hour south of Perth).

For the past 6 years the organisers of the event have kindly set a plot aside for Volkswagens. This space affectionately named “Volksville” increases in size and improves year by year. We are very lucky to have this “Volkswagen only” camping ground! Its a very special spot near to the heart of the event. VW Club and Fairbridge Festival Committee member - Kim Shermann drops by in his patrol buggy every now and then to ensure we’re all good and happy. If you haven’t been to this event before I highly recommend it. Book your tickets by calling the office and quote “VW CLUB” to ensure you get tickets to the right camping area.

ulliver is still receiving our attention but unfortunately mine is now very much scheduled by the weather, so it’s early mornings and cooler days only. We need to keep the paint stripper and acid wet and in the heat it just dries too quick using more materials and well I just don’t want to work in a 40 degree shed! We moved onto the doors applying paint stripper then scrapping the layers of paint off with a blade most of it came off quite easily but there are always those awkward

areas especially in the dents and scratches. We used Thinners to clean off the doors before applying acid and used a scourer to agitate it, Dave took a strip it disc to some of the more severe rust areas then a scriber was used on those dents and scratches and to dig out all the deep down bits of rust. Once all the paint and rust was removed we washed and dried the doors ready for Dave to primer them and store until ready to repair them.

words TINA MOORE images DAVE MOORE

The edges and fiddly bits were left for Dave to sandblast as trying to use paint stripper will take too long.

N

ext Dave and I moved on to the body where the same long process has to be done on the entire bus needless to say this has taken quite a lot of our time but so far both sides back from the doors have been stripped, cleaned and epoxy primered.

G

ulliver’s floor above the engine had been butchered, a large hole cut in it that needed repairing. Dave had an engine hatch from a type 3 so decided to use the hatch instead of repairing the

D

floor. Dave used a cutoff wheel to cut out the hole to fit the hatch and then welded it in. The plus side of this is Dave can change the oil coolers seals without taking the engine out. - He likes doing that!

ave also got busy in the engine bay cutting out the rust including the battery trays and the bottom of the rear corner panels. It’s great seeing Gulliver in primer. It shows much progress has been made.

W

e have a couple of busy months ahead with festivals and visits from family but hopefully we will still squeeze in a bit of time on Gulliver to keep the transformation moving forward.
