Editors Note When I look at a magazine I tend to flick through quickly gravitating towards the pictures and I stop to read anything that stands out as interesting. When selecting pictures for this magazine I try and choose ones that tell a story. I think that you’ll agree that this shot of Thor with his Amarok, standing proudly behind the trophies that he made for the show winners is a cracker! This edition is picture heavy. We have had some great events and luckily for me - people took their cameras along to capture what has been going on. This always makes the job easier. I am trying to mix up the editions with water cooled vehicles, air cooled, late to new models, ratty, concourse, and then there’s the people too.

Thor Anson with the Trophies

A Big thanks to Jan and VW Jon for major contributions to this edition.

President’s Spot Dear Members and Readers, Happy New Year! Who ate and drank too much? I did... Who worked on their VW? Not me...Who made the most of their Dub and drove it around as much as possible.....Me! I love my Volkswagens too much. Day of the Volkswagen was a flying success. Great venue, great weather, great people, great turnout and an amazing amount of support to make the day what it was. So much good feedback too. I really enjoyed myself and felt it was the best ever! Having the beach as a back drop and Cool DJ Paul providing the mellow sound track added to the feel and created an amazing vibe. A huge thanks to our Sponsors and everyone who made it what it was! So now for a new year ahead - we will have more cruises, campouts and events. ViaWest will be Bi-monthly and the thickness of it depends on your contributions. Our club is going from strength to strength - With your support in the form of either being a member or advertising in this magazine your contributions to date have put the club in the best financial position we have ever been in. We’ll be spending a bit on a new trailer (one you don’t need an Amarok to tow it with) to a light weight, safe and space friendly model.. Do Volkswagen make trailers? The next trip is a relaxing weekend away to the dog friendly Estuary Caravan Park in Mandurah. After that we have one of my favourites - the cruise to Munster. The feedback from new members that come to an event is always about how friendly and welcoming everybody is. We have got a great community that welcomes everyone. If you have had any reservations about coming to an event because you don’t know anyone put those fears away. March sees the return of the Munster Cruise, a fun cruise down the coast with a display and music at the end....What more could you want? One of my personal favourites. See you out there! S

unday 22nd saw a good turnout for the January Coastal Cruise. Over 20 cars gathered at Taylor Road in Victoria Park eager to enjoy the fine weather. It was good to see new faces and vehicles along with some regulars.

After some chatting and catching up, the cruise headed over the Causeway and past the city along Riverside Drive, causing many heads and segway riders to turn. We carried on down Stirling Highway to Eric St where we turned for the coast. The Cottesloe strip was busy as usual and the cars received plenty of attention as they cruised by the parks and pubs. >>>

C

ontinuing down the coast the Fremantle Doctor put the open safari windows and our hair to the test. We drove along the bustling Cappuccino Strip in Fremantle to an appreciative crowd. The cruise ended with Fish and Chips at Fishing Boat Harbour. Both new and regular enthusiasts contributed to make the day a great success.

MEMBER PROFILE Harry

Hay

Harry sends this Members Profile from the slopes of Canada. He (along with his girlfriend Stevie) is away overseas enjoying himself on a working holiday.......He’s even found a Split Bus covered in snow in a field! He lives and breathes VWs.

Dual cab lowlight slammed on its guts, fully tubbed, super ratty, it was rad! This memory still has a big influence on the cars I build now.

How long have you had a passion for VWs Haz? I’ve been passionate/obsessed about V-Dubs since I was 15 years old.

Favourite VW Club Cruise to date? Every VW Cruise is a good cruise! But one that always stands out is the Bunbury/Margs cruise down south.

What got you into VW’s? My Old Boy (Dad) would tell me stories about a guy he worked with “Jaimo” and his brother (a Porsche engineer) and their Beetle that used to pull “monos” off at the traffic lights. This kind of sparked my passion. Then I remember going around to Jaimo’s house at around the age of 15 (this was just before I moved to Australia) Jaimo lived in a little terraced house. We walked up and through his garden to his shed. It was full of engines (an engine builders dream/machine shop). Next to his shed was a small garage. He opened it up and there sat this early

What cars do you own? I have a few... My drivers are a 74 Bay, a 61 Beetle and a 70 Squareback. With current projects being a 65 Notch and a 64 Split 11 Window. Best VW Experience I was back in the UK when I was 18 (2010) and the Old Boy and I went to Vanfest in Malvern. It was mental! The swap meet took us all day to walk around, and then the amount of Buses was unreal.

Favourite VW you have ever owned? It has to be my current Daily the 74 Bay. It’s been my daily driver since I got my license at 17. I did a lot of work to it to get the look and stance that I wanted. It has been super reliable. In terms of my projects - The Splitty has always been a dream car. So hopefully I’ll be living that dream soon. Ultimate/dream car(s)? Any pre 55 Volkswagen or a 356 Porsche appeals to me.

olkswagens invaded Wilson Park in South Fremantle on the first Sunday of December. 162 vehicles took over the park for the 2016 Day of the Volkswagen. The new location was perfect. Once all the vehicles were parked it was nice and cosy. Cool Tunes from DJ Pauls Splitscreen Kombi filled the air along with the breeze direct from the ocean made for a great and pleasant atmosphere. Many embraced the beach and surf theme - Hawaiian and loud shirts

were plentiful. With pink flamingos, surfboards, umbrellas and loungers donning the patches next to the Kombis and cars you could have been at any 60’s holiday park. The prize for best display was won by Steve Simmons for his beach themed 1974 Kombi. The club tents where busy all day. The Day of the Volkswagen T-Shirts designed by Sean Douglas sold out and new member sign ups were plentiful. >>>

There was also plenty to look at. Displays by the Formula Vees and the local Mod Squad on their Scooters, Retro items were readily available from the trade stalls with the Blue Bird Vintage mobile shop a “display of its own”. The show and shine judging was a tough job for the judges. As an example in the best paint category it came down to window frames of two Splitscreen kombis. With Stephen Linke taking the trophy. This year trophies were custom made desert islands with 4 palm trees strategically placed to form the VW from our favourite marque badge. Very classy and rare Karmann Ghias also won 3 trophies. Grant Baileys Classy Bamboo and Green ‘58 Ghia took best interior. Father and Son Pele and Henry Liascos both took trophies for their rides a ‘68 Beetle and ‘58 Ghia. >>>

Kicking back and enjoying the show

“It was a very chilled out day”

Bluebird Vintages’ mobile shop/display

Scott Brenchleys bare metal custom 356 Porsche deserved the best Affiliate trophy. So many great examples of cars and kombis were on display. A record amount of Type 3s showed up. Pete Kopec drew with himself to take away best Splitscreen. Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. Plenty of crew on board to direct traffic and help out, made for a relaxing day for all. Even after the trophy announcements nobody seemed in a huge rush to leave the venue. It might just have to be the venue for the next Day of the Volkswagen.

ullivers’ story started about 10 years ago when Dave heard on the grapevine about an 11 window Splitty that was being cut up for parts. He called the owner and said he would come and take the whole vehicle off his hands as he couldn’t see it being cut up and letting yet another kombi go to its grave. When we arrived to collect Gulliver his tailgate had just been sold even though we were on our way to buy the whole vehicle, needless to say Dave was not impressed. Gulliver was already in a bit of a sorry state, half his chassis had been cut out and his engine lid had also been sold. His face had taken a battering and he had been walked over leaving him with a very dented roof.

Once we got him home we stored him away as a future project. Over the years Dave acquired several projects and not just VW’s which meant poor Gulliver was destined to wait longer and longer. Back in late 2012 we sold our splitty camper to fund the restoration of Dave’s dream kombi a 1956 double door panel van on the condition that we had another camper to use until the panel was on the road which would take about 2 years. We purchased a 1972 double door panel, which Dave fitted out as our camper. That has been working so well that 4 years later we are still using it!! There has not been a lot of progress on the panel

and losing patience I decided enough was enough and it was time to get things going. So after talking about both vans a comment was made that there was less work to get Gulliver back on the road if we didn’t paint him. This then prompted a discussion on what we could do and the result was Gulliver got his lifeline and his transformation started. We pulled him out of storage to have a good look over but because of the extent of the damage and the rust we would not be able to do the repairs without losing too much of the original paint and the end result would not be what we wanted so we decided painting him was the only way to go. I knew if I wanted to see some progress and get things moving I was going to have to start it myself and those of you that know me would know I normally avoid the shed at all costs!

hub caps, seals etc. There was an awful lot of it for one bus but Dave said it all need to be cleaned and polished so we could decide which parts to use on which kombi based on their condition, I think he liked the idea of getting all the parts for his panel and double cab cleaned!! I created a spreadsheet of everything we need to do the restoration, so I could catalogue what we did and didn’t have or if it needed to be restored. After 3 days of cleaning parts in the house with the fan on. I went back to the roof, Dave helped me with the final scrub to etch out the stubborn rust and the roof was ready for Dave to work his magic on the dents.

I now have the long job ahead of removing the rest of the paint but now I’m back at work the progress has slowed as I have not had much time to spend The long job of rust and paint removal started with with Gulliver. Dave has removed the largest dents the roof. Starting on the inside we scraped off all the and started on the smaller dents but he works horrible brushed on tar and then scrubbed it with long hours so Gulliver doesn’t get too much of his petrol to clean off the residue. Whilst I was home attention. Hopefully we can make some progress for the Christmas break I started to acid the roof over the next couple of months so we can give you to remove all the rust and paint, well this took a lot a progress report in the next issue. longer than I expected and was completely tedious!! Now I know why I normally avoid the shed! I took a few days off from the roof as the temperature climbed so Dave scoured his shed and started pulling out all the parts he had, glass, lights, handles,

Country Buggy words and images john hornby

T

he Country Buggy was originally requested as a design concept by the military. They needed a lightweight vehicle that could carry 4 men and equipment, be dropped from an aircraft, float, have 4-wheel drive, have absolute basic mechanics that could be easily repaired under war conditions. A bit of a tall ask. The Americans had the Jeep, UK had the Land Rover, the Mini Moke, and the incredibly heavy and impractical Austin Champ with its Rolls Royce motor. Germany had the Kubelwagon / Trekker (VW 181 / 2) and the Audi produced Lltis, Porsche also showed off a Jagdwagon (which looks like a country buggy on steroids). Australia came to the party in 1966 with the VW Country Buggy - model 197. The overall concept was brilliant, but it was thrown out by the military as it didn’t have 4 wheel drive. It was light at about 750Kg and it was amphibious. But due to the low sides anything other than a mill pond was off limits.

for a complicated 4WD system. The sun and rain was kept at bay with a basic canvas roof. It had no doors. Only 2 electric switches (lights and wipers) and an early Beetle speedometer completed the dash. Indicators were for safety, but no luxuries, and an open box for the glove compartment. No cup holders, radio, doors, not even a fan!! The designers at VW Australia spent a small fortune designing this little car and weren’t going to just shelve the idea because some guys in fancy hats didn’t like it. So in 1967 the Country Buggy was released to the market. A go anywhere vehicle that could be repaired with a few basic tools, no water cooling system to let you down, a perfect vehicle for on those big stations where roads don’t exist but the need to get food and medication to live stock or staff was essential.

Volkswagen Australia sold 1,956 units and in 1969 they pulled the pin on the project. If only they had the Country Buggy later and marketed it as a safer beach buggy. I am Based on a VW Beetle floor pan with strengthened front sure they would have cleaned up in the leisure market. suspension, a Split Screen gearbox with reduction hubs meant it was a very capable off roader without the need VW negotiated a deal with the Philippians Government

and over 1000 Country Buggy’s were sold overseas. They you could have! The fold down windscreen gives you the were primarily used as cheap Government cars mostly ultimate bugs in the teeth driving experience too. Police cars and Philippians Telecom cars. Quite a few were sold on to the public under the VW Sakbayan badge. Keep your eyes peeled for these iconic and very rare VW’s Sakbayan literally translated means “Peoples Car”. 887 CBs were produced for Australia, 24 green, 3 red Each car has its own VIN but the Australian Country and the rest were sandy beige. 12 of the green ones were Buggys also have a 3 digit KO number. CB owners always manufactured within the first 175 made, so there’s a very refer to this number. It’s their place in the line. The KO good chance this is an early one! number is located on a plate near the fuel tank and nobody really knows what KO actually stands for. The cars came in two basic variants, one being the 4 seat version, the other being a Ute, which meant a metal plate in place of the rear seats. Aftermarket goodies soon popped up including a fiberglass hard top that covered the whole of the seating area and a smaller coupe type fiberglass top with doors was available for the Ute version. Today the vast majority of the cars are still in the Philippians.

There is an example in the Wolfsburg museum in Germany, another in the UK, and a scattering of them in Australia Probably the highest concentration of them being here in Perth, Western Australia. The cars were used and abused and when they reached the end of their life they were left in car dumps, stripped of their running gear neglected and forgotten.

The latest one to be “found” in a car dump was a former speedway car with a Holden red motor bolted to the gearbox, its arches have been hacked away to make room for a set of oversized wheels. There is a fair amount of rust, but nothing that can’t be repaired. The gearbox and front suspension are still on the car - these parts and all the others that make up the Country Buggy - can prove to be very expensive as they are so rare. Yet a good condition example doesn’t command the prices you’d expect from such a rare and unique vehicle of which probably only a few hundred remain and about 200 actually road running. With no doors, no seatbelts, vinyl seats, driving can be “exhilarating” to say the least! A huge grab handle on the passenger side dash is a reminder that VW knew the fun

The latest one to be “found”
