Editors Note

Plenty has been going on to give us a bumper edition this time around. I have some great memories from the Munster Run! As the Editor I had to hold back some pictures from the Late night antics at the Munster camp over..... All good fun though. From that night of good comany and laughs to another evening at the Drag strip. With Fairbridge chucked in there too. I hope you enjoy this edition.

JUNE 2017

President’s Spot Dear Members and Readers, Unless you are into collecting rainwater we have had the best 6 weeks of weather going! I had my Dad here from the UK for all that time and he thinks Australia is the business! Not only was it a perfect 26C everyday, the VW action was great too. I took him to Alfreds Kitchen for the monthly meet on his first week here, took him to the VW and Mini Drag night at Motorplex, which was great fun. We went to a hotrod night meet in Freo (turned up in the Kombi and got looked at a bit funny). We also camped at Fairbridge Music Festival in the Kombis. Plus many other little outings in the Bus and short cruises around Perths sights. The first thing he did when he got home was to send me pictures of VWs at a car show he attended. I think my love of VWs has worn off on him. On behalf of the club I would like to thank Bernie Brix and his family for hosting the Munster Camp over again. It was a huge success and great fun. Thanks also to everyone that made it a great day/night. Also thank you to Fairbridge Music festival for both putting on another great weekend of international and local music, plus the added bonus of Volksville Camping area - right near the heart of the action. Although a lot of action was seen around the VW campground. Our monthly committee meetings are now being held at the new Shannons premises in Cannington. They have generously opened their doors to us. We will be utilising the meeting room and the ample parking. The new club trailer is on order so we are looking forward to transferring our assets into it. Whoever has a tow ball will enjoy towing this one. Membership numbers hit a massive 195 ending the year on a high. The renewals will be out soon so please look out for them. The club survives with the committee but just as importantly the funds from memberships ultimately keep the club strong and relieves any extra stresses about paying the bills. The same venue as last year has been booked for our AGM. All positions will be up for grabs. You could be writing the President Spot next year. Tina Moore has done an amazing job supporting us in the secretary role and wishes to step away from this position. We need young (at mind) members to come forward and put your hand up and help spread the load to keep the club alive. Thanks and I’ll see you out there! Jamie Barrett Club President

Wolfsburg in the winter words AND images Andrew Dawson and Sharmila Nagar

It had probably warmed up slightly from the minus 7 C it had been as it started to snow. It didn’t matter as the snow was whipped into my face as I hadn’t felt my cheeks for a few hours. But it did get me to thinking...why was I in Germany in January? To see Wolfsburg of course! In fact, it might just be the best time to go.

array of VWs from both the air cooled and watercooled days.

As it was winter, we almost had the place to ourselves. The info was all in German, but you can get the English translation. However, most of it needed no translation. My favourites were too hard to pick, but I think that the prototype type 3 made me glad that they didn’t choose Our trip to the UK to see family and friends that design for the notchback, and the type 3 had a short side trip to Berlin and Wolfsburg. convertible should have been made! Berlin was great, even in the freezing cold, but the main event was only a fast train ride west to the VW factory and Museum. First stop was the Stiftung Automuseum. This is the heritage centre for VW – the place where your Birth Certificate is researched. It is a pretty unassuming building in an industrial area just a short trip from the centre of town. But once you are through the door, it is amazing! This museum contains a vast

Some of the one-offs for car shows etc. were a bit out there but the Sea-Golf with the pontoons would be good for Mandurah. The staff were very happy to accept our club badge and put the club sticker on their front office cupboards where they have a collection from around the world. Look out for it when you go although a few Australian clubs had beaten us to it. The town itself is very much a factory town. Over half the population works in the factory and gets good prices on new VWs. Very strange to be in a place with 95% of the cars VWs.

Didn’t see any aircooled on the street though. One guy told me that they are all worth too much now and that Mk1 and Mk2 Golf/Passat are seen as the driveable classics. But overall, the people were really friendly and had a sense of humour so strike that stereotype off.

Although the trains all ran on time and the streets were swept free of snow so maybe there’s a bit of truth in the old stereotype. Autostadt is the main attraction in Wolfsburg (VfL Wolfsburg is not having a great time this season). And its massive. Each VW brand has it’s own pavilion to show off the latest technology or heritage. Audi was very futuristic while VW showed off the new Mk7.5 GTI with gesture control audio system. Lots of stuff about connectivity and personalised journeys which is kind of why people like VWs I suppose.

appear and are bolted in, glass, doors, interiors all in the correct type of each vehicle. Very impressive. Some of the production ends up in the car towers which are like vertical holding bays. You can go up in a carriage to the top and walk around inside. All of it is automated –no-one touches the cars from the factory through the tunnels until it is stacked. New VW owners in Europe can collect their cars from Wolfsburg – even the ones made in Spain or Czech Republic. Around 130 000 are picked up every year and a lot of families use it as a day out of the kids and drive home in the new car. This was by far the busiest section.

There is also the ZeitHaus which is a design museum not just for VW. Very interesting to see how they grouped the cars together – again, the stuff they had was outstanding from 1937 prototypes to the last of the Brazilian Bays and aircooled Beetles. They also had a look at different designers.

I got to go for a test drive in a Golf GTE (performance hybrid). Very nice but a bit slower than a standard GTI but with lots of places around the world moving to electric it was still a lot of fun even if you had to plug it in when you get home. Due to the weather and the fact that they had just packed up the icerink and Christmas festival, the Auotstadt was really empty. Several groups of high school students were there for design related courses but it was good fun to surprise the nicely dressed young Germans manning the pavilions and catch them on their phones thinking that no-one is silly enough to come out today. But they were happy to chat and luckily their English is better than our German. Just meant more currywurst for us!

Highlight of Autostadt was the factory tour. You can’t take photos inside but to see how they produce 800 000 Golfs a year is amazing. You are inside a little train that goes past the production lines as the cars are passed between the floors, tyres and drivetrains

So, in the end, winter was a good time to visit Wolfsburg. There were no crowds, we managed to get onto all the extra things that we wanted to do and it was nice to have a chance to see all the cars without having to wait for someone to move along.

“They produce 800,000 Golfs a year”

I think a visit to Wolfsburg is a must-do for anyone thinking of a European trip but don’t be put off by the snow and cold – just makes the beers in a warm beer hall even more enjoyable!

How long have you had a passion for VWs For most of my life. My Grandad had a 1963 beetle and my mum had a 1974 Kombi/camper which I learnt to drive in. What got you into VWs My Grandad would take my sisters, cousins & I on picnics in his 1963 Beetle. There would be 5 of us across the back seat 4x4ing on the old logging tracks in Manjimup. What cars do you own Maid Marion, a 1972 kombi Panel/Camper, 1976 Kombi Camper, 1971 type 3 Squareback & a 1972 type 3 Squareback. Best VW experience Buying Maid Marion was special although driving her home from Valla was an amazing time. Favourite VW club cruise to date I love the Margaret River cruises, but the VAlla trip was amazing. Best VW you have ever owned Maid Marion with a close second the 71 Square

I live a few hours drive north of Perth, so I don’t get to many VW meets down there. The Bug-In road trip came through my workplace and town on it’s last adventure and stopped for a quick lunch break, I’ve never seen more than 2 VWs up here ever before or since, it was very cool. When I do make it down there I try to organise it for the first Wednesday of the month so I can catch up, say hi, and get a quick Volksie fix while practising photography - and I need lots of practise!

for the house, parts for the Superbug project, special treat toys for the boys, etc. So I went to Officeworks for 100 bulldog clips (Superbug headliner install), Dymocks for some more books to keep the family going, coffee from Peaberrys in Lakeside to keep me going, Toyworld for Lego to keep the boys thinking and building stuff, Autobarn for headliner spray upholstery, Bunnings for new flywire and some replacement hardware, then onto the Freeway and keep heading south.

PERTH MOTORPLEX

VOLKSWAGEN & MINI NIGHT words jamie barrett images Jan Ahearn

Last year with help, I built a larger bore motor for my 1963 Split Screen Kombi. The reason to increase the CC was to ensure I could keep up with the flow of traffic and go up hills with all the camping gear in it and not have to blow the windscreen to make it over the crest. Once built, run in and tuned, the motor met the power requirements.... plus a bit more!

Mozzie

Mozzie vs Jamie Now, Kombis are heavy and have the aerodynamics of a loaf of bread (I’m told that they are more aerodynamic than a Beetle though - all be it a bit heavier). However I was keen to know what the kombi would run in a straight line. In the UK some years ago a group was started called Buses with Attitude. To get the title your VW Split Screen you have to have a Flat4 VW Engine and run a sub 18 second time down the strip. I was really intrigued and kept an eye on the growing numbers of buses running these times. I had only dreamt of having a Split Screen back then, let alone having a relatively quick one. Perth Motorplex holds the Whoop Ass Wednesday event here in Perth - Funny enough on Wednesday nights. To encourage competitors and entrants, themed nights are held at a discounted rate. April 19th was Mini and VW night. For $20 you can run your vehicle down the Ÿ Mile strip and get an official time. I was keen, and nervous.

Brian White

Paul Van Vliet

Graham Tibbs Anyone can take their car and run it as long as it is deemed safe by one of the inspectors on the night. You need long pants and sleeves, a current certified helmet and a driver’s license. I ticked all the boxes and made my way to lane 6 and queued with Brian White in his Split Screen, Mozzie in his Lowlight Panel, Paul Van Vliet and Graham Tibbs in their Black Rat Beetles, Gerhard Theron in his Herbie decal Beetle, along with the water-cooled Golfs, and Minis.

Gerhard Theron taking on a Mini

I wasn’t taking it all too seriously, but after my first run I was keen to go again and try to beat my last time, then again.... Perhaps if I shift earlier, or not change into fourth gear near the line or..... “Stop, Jamie, you are in a Kombi.” (I had to remind myself). I think that my Drag days are done. I am very happy with the power of the engine and the times I ran. Most of the lads were happy with their times too. Gerhard was so close to a 15 second run. Maybe at the next VW night we’ll all have another go....! It is addictive.

KOMBI KEG kombi keg

K

ombis are now very popular with business. They attract attention and stand out. We’ve seen many VWs converted and used as coffee outlets. This particular Bay Window Panel Van has been modified to have tap outlets down one side. Any non pulped drink in a pressurised keg can be dispensed. This Kombi Keg is owned by Kristy Hameister and is available to book here in Perth. Kristy has always loved Volkwagens and older cars and loves using it as part of her business. The Kombi was rescued from a farm, had all her sun spots cut out, new paint job and since then Kristy has had bookings for weddings, parties and recently Groovin the Moo and the Easter Fest. What a great business idea. This would look great at an event and it’s also practical! Sunny the dog doesn’t come to the gigs but seems very happy sitting up front looking after the drinks.

FAIRBRIDGE T his years festival was an amazing music packed 4 day affair. Plenty of VW happy campers and a very happy Logan Bayley. He got to meet and have a picture with Stella Donnelly (one of the many performing artists). Lots of antics from the VW crowd including joining in with the Sea Shanties Singing at most of their gigs. Some of the gang got involved with the various dance classes. Some chose to just chill in Volksville. Club member Adam Green was on site in his lowlight coffee Baywindow pumping out so many hot drinks! Thanks for perking us up in the mornings Adam. The weather could not have been better. The sun shined all weekend which made the camping experience that much easier. Thanks Fairbridge! words jamie images Julie & STeve

TREKKER 181

words AND images jon hornby

A

few weeks ago we looked at the Australian built Country Buggy, This time we are having a quick look at the VW 181 / 182. The 181 was the left hand drive version, and the 182 was the right hand drive version of the same car. They were known by several names across the world, Trekker in the UK (182) Safari in Mexico, Thing in the US, Pescaccia in Italy, Often referred to as a Kubel or Kubelwagon strictly speaking Kubel’s were the WWII beetle based military vehicles used by the German war machine. The 181/2 is a mix and match of several different VW’s using the Karman Ghia floor pans to make the vehicle wider, Splitscreen reduction hubs to increase the rear ground clearance, the front suspension had longer trailing arms, the front suspension was also braced, door handles inside and out from the VW LT, Knobs bits n bobs all robbed from the parts bin. The motors were

Kombi units 1.5 1.6 air-cooled twin port reliable and proven. They were virtually all identical having only 3 model type. The military personnel carrier, capable of carrying 4 soldiers, all their equipment, guns stowed next to the seats, ammunition over the engine to keep it dry, the B pillar was also strengthened to accommodate a machine gun, although I wouldn’t like to be sat in the front seats with one of those going off next to your head! The 2nd model was the radio car. Seating 2 people in the front, batteries and a large radio receiver over the rear seating area. As the radio was almost over the motor, the electrics of these cars were all shielded to prevent static and other interference. The shielding was so good its said that if a nuclear bomb was dropped these would be one of the very few cars to operate after the electro magnetic wave wipes out all magnets, batteries, etc.

T

he 3rd model was the civilian version. No gun holders, no shielding, usually on VW Beetle standard suspension and no reduction hubs. This meant that these cars sit lower and are not as capable of serious off roading. Mexico produced a 4th version. An extended 6 door car for taxi and tourist services. These cars were usually blue and white. Civilian versions came with a canvas shade roof, and chrome trims.

In order to keep production costs to a minimum they were all basic, basic, basic. Only the absolute essentials. As a result they were only sold in the US for about 2 years. They simply couldn’t meet the new emissions, or safety rules. The 181 was produced in Germany for over 25yrs, and in Mexico had a 10yr production run. The easiest way to tell the difference between the German and Mexican versions is the tail lights, the German cars had the early bay window oval tail lights, while the Mexican version had the 1303 elephant foot rear lights mounted higher up. As pictured:

The military version don’t have chrome, but some times do have the UV reflective black out kit. These consisted of covers for all the lights and bags over the mirrors and windscreen - If you ever wondered what the little clips near the headlights As a car they are an amazing vehicle,.Basic were for - now you know. mechanics ensure reliability and cost effective motoring. The roof is well made and when new All models had fold down windscreens, they very water tight. The material does shrink, and were all convertibles but you could buy after crack. The doors have a slot in steel framed market fibre glass roofs with glass windows. vinyl window which gets badly affected by UV They all had removable doors (the front and rays. Most people take them off while driving rear doors were interchangeable). All models in the sun, with the roof down, the front screen were 4speed manual transmission with a 1.6 A/C folded down and the doors removed... it’s like T/P motor. Military versions were waterproofed riding a 4 wheeled motor bike. Bugs in the and shielded. teeth, exhilarating and FUN. They will go almost anywhere. They will wade deep water and floated when new. For those of us who would love one of these cars, there are a few here in WA. I’m going to guess that all of them came from Bali, and are the Mexican built civilian versions.

The exhaust was a twin system left and right, which allowed for ground clearance. The tips were raised and exited the car through the rear bumper, (these were very expensive) but luckily for us almost any of the VW air cooled exhaust systems will fit the motor and due to its construction will also fit under the body! If you’d like info on a particular model of VW get in touch and we’ll do our best.

had been really looking forward to this run and camp over since the date was set back in December. Then as we got closer it was looking like I couldn’t attend. THEN the stars lined up and it was a goer! The new meeting spot at Hillarys back car park near the fisheries department was ideal as we had plenty of punters ready to cruise the coast to the next meeting spot at Captain Munchies in Fremantle. The 30 plus vehicles got split up not long after leaving but two decent groups made up of Beetles, Type 3s and Kombis turned heads all the way down the coast. Upon arrival at Captain Munchies even more, patiently waited to join the fun. After some more photo taking and meeting new people we proceeded to head towards Munster. We could not miss the cafe strip. With the whole crew now together the convoy filled the whole road from the start of Market Street to the Freo Markets! What a sight for

all the coffee sippers sitting along the strip. We were soon at Munster Garage, Bernie and Co had been busy. The place looked amazing. The new campground was freshly mulched, the Single Cab Ute (Norm) was the bench for the record turntables and equipment, fairy lights strung around, the kids flying fox in action, displays in the Garage, the band were setting up the PA and sound checking all as the VWs were filing in and grabbing a spot on the flat ground. The beers and wine came out from old vintage eskis, and the socialising started. Everyone was great! And the weather was mint! The limited Edition Munster Cruise 5 T-shirts came out, and then the smell of sausages and steaks cooking on the provided BBQs filled the air along with the sound of cool tunes from the Single Cab Dj Booth. The band kicked off not long after playing original and some cover songs. Laughter and conversation was abundant all night (literally all

night for some). The DJs took turns entertaining us all (and themselves) throughout the evening. Sunday morning arrived bright and early and it wasn’t long before the Coffee machine was out and the BBQs were back on with the generous spread put on by the hosts. Plenty of cooks helped get the breaky in the buns. What a great, simple, entertaining, and fun event! Thank you so much to Bernie and Annalea for having us for the 5th year running.

GulliverS

Part tHree

T R A N S F O R M AT I O N

Gullivers transformation continued as Dave and I worked together to re acid the roof one last time, then Dave sandblasted all the gutters, seams and window apertures and primed them all.

I moved to the inside to carry on with the paint stripping process (so did Karman), I didn’t get very far before my mum arrived from the UK.

As the rear end of the chassis is missing from Gulliver - We sourced a donor chassis. This got sent off to the sandblasters and then on its return Dave got it into primer.

We had a set vents that Dave rescued from a panel van many years ago. We decided to add them to Gulliver to give us some well needed ventilation for when we are away on our camping trips.

The first job was to paint strip and acid the vents. Then they were screwed into position so that Dave could scribe around them to mark where to cut - with the cut off wheel. Dave left 2 tabs so that the vents could be screwed back on to enable him to use a TIG welder to tack them in place. Once they had been fully welded he ground the welds down, then used a hammer and dolly to flatten the panel ready for primer.
