Editors Note

Dear Readers, welcome to the first magazine under my control and in fact the first magazine that I have ever put together. When Ray Willis decided to depart from the Editor role I thought who is going to take on this task? I must be mad to put my hand up. It has been both challenging and time consuming but a good learning opportunity. I am not alone in creating this publication. I have had the help of Members and my other half, and of course the contributors of articles and reports. The magazine will evolve into the vis ion I have as my publis hing, computer skills and knowledge increases. I hope that you enjoy this copy and many more that will follow. I will be relying on content from you the reader. I’m sure many of you have some interesting VW stories to share. I had the pleasure in photographing and putting together the article on Joel Beavers Rat Panel – featuring a ride per mag is the goal. Feel free to email me at viawest@vwclub.com with either a member profile or story. I am open to suggestions about what sort of content you want to see in your magazine. and Jan for Thank you to Sean Douglas your support over the last month.

President’s Spot Dear Members and Readers, We made it back! The Valla road trip was a huge success and a huge journey – we covered 8000kms. I didn’t get the ’63 Splitscreen ready in time so I took the trusty ‘69 Microbus instead. Micro as she is affectionately known, did us proud, so did Maid Marion, Patina and Dave n Tinas Green Machine. Has your VW got a name? We got a lot of attention along the way with many Kombi related stories told to us. We even joined and met up with the South Australian Volks Enthusiasts Club on their 20th Anniversary Club run around the streets of Adelaide. Dwellingup The hardcore campers went along and braved the rain. They were rewarded with great weather and good times. The camp fire kept them warm and provided a spot to share some drinks and stories. The AGM “Best AGM ever!” The Annual General Meeting held at the Victoria Park Hotel was a huge success. Atttendance was high and really good to see some new and old faces coming to support the club. Whether it was the location being a pub or my embarrassing video that got emailed out I don’t know but we got something right.. We smashed through the proceedings in record time, voted in the new committee, and then all socialised for the rest of the evening. Margaret River The Trip is on again! A Big thanks goes down to Kim Muste and his family for organising this event again. If you went last year the format is similar just with a change of destination for the cruise. This is one of my favorite events of the year because of the laid back vibe, beautiful scenery and the facilities at the campsite. Content Wanted A Club T-shirt is up for grabs for the best story or article submitted to the editor. We would like to read about an event or a road trip, mechanical mishaps, your project, build or roadside repair. Jamie Barrett Club President

“When are you going to paint it?”

For owners of vehicles that choose to roll with original or no paint on their ride the question - “When are you going to paint it?” is easy to answer. But it is hard to explain why you are not going to paint it to some. People look at the owners sideways and come back with “Na your joking right?” or “really!?” Many simply don’t get it. Many of us in the club have chosen to restore and build vehicles - leaving the paint (or sometimes working hard to save the paint) to get the Patina going on. In most of these cases it would be both quicker and cheaper to strip the vehicles back to bare metal and paint them. Some builds take so much more work to match paint after the welding and panel work is complete.

Matching colours and making the new look old can be challenging. The guy welding the new metal can’t cut back too much. The painter needs to match the primers and top coat with the original ready for blending.

Anything goes! More rust the merrier. Stickers, dodgy flaking paint, dents, accessories, and lowered suspension best describe the “Ratter”. Patina is more of an art and more difficult to pull off.

The ultimate for some is to have original sign writing. This brings extra challenges and decisions. Both Rat Look and Patina paint are a huge trend right now. To explain Rat look as best as possible, it is rough!

These rides are typically ground up restorations, with all rust cut out and replaced. Mostly original paint on the top, blended where the new metal has been stitched in. Underneath is like new, new everything. Detailed beams and suspension, painted and sound deadened, new brake

lines, electrics, wheels and tyres. Mechanically A1. Neat larger horsepower motors sit where the tired 36hp once was. In most cases newly covered seats and door cards don the interior. The Volkswagen scene is very diverse, people get to express themselves in whatever way they want. I have grown to love the Patina look. There is a lot said for a repainted, restored vehicle. I like them and respect anyone that has completed a project in that fashion. We have some world class Patina rides in Western Australia. With numbers increasing.//

Best VW Experience? In 2001 I spent a week in Wolfsburg. I visited Autostadt twice and Automuseum three times. It’s great because it’s the only place on earth where you can’t be too VW What cars have you owned? My current VW is a 1974 Microbus. My past VWs have been a 1975 Camper, a 1965 Kombi, a 1965 Type 3 Notchback, a 2001 Polo, a 1972 1302S Beetle and a 2000 Polo. We need to upgrade our Kia Carnival so I’ll be on the lookout for a T4 or T5 Transporter and hopefully be a two VW family. Favourite VW Club cruise? In fact I’ve only ever been on one so far. That was the recent cruise from McCallum Park to Freo. The whole family came along. Just after that one I joined the Club How long have you had a passion for VWs? Since about 2 minutes after buying my first one nearly 20 years ago. On the drive home from picking it up it just felt right. It went a bit obsessive just after that. Got a VW Story? Years back (before Wikipedia) I was in Wolfsburg and trying to get information about the WWII Holzbrenner Beetles. I asked at the ticket office at Automuseum if anyone could help.

The lady made a phonecall and a minute later a gentleman appeared and asked me to follow him. We went into an office where he proceeded to photocopy anything he thought might be relevant to me. He then took me on a personal tour of his favourite bits of the museum. He was the Director of Automuseum and he had taken time out of his day to share his love of Volkswagens with me. I think that’s what I most enjoyed about that was that he still loved the cars for who they are. Favourite VW you have ever owned? My ’65 Kombi. It was such an underachiever but it drew people out of the woodwork to share their Volkswagen stories with me. My current bus is pulling a very close second. It’s the first bus that the kids have been able to share, so it’s a real family bus. Ultimate/dream car(s)? For Sunday cruising - a Hebmuller. For shifting our increasingly large family about - a 23 window bus. For ultimate showing off rights - a Schwimmwagen. So only the rarest, oldest and most staggeringly expensive really.

With Munster Garage working on the metal and supplying the suspension kit, parts and an engine were sourced. Wheels were borrowed along with the engine from Graham

VeeDubs for a long time. In his early days he was keen to build a Baja Bug instead he convinced his Dad (Bob Beaver) to buy a Kombi that he had spotted in the Quokka. This became his daily for 6 months. Since then he had been looking for a project of his own. At church he was told about an old Kombi in Mukinbudin located in the Wheatbelt. At the time he already owned a 1965 Bus that needed lots of work. But with this had been used as a fertilizer delivery vehicle – it even came with a hessian “Super66 fertilizer sack”. There was no engine, it was basically a rolling chassis. The floor was dented in from previous heavy loads. Being a fan of small back window Panels Joel was wrapped. It was earlier and an “un hacked panel” it was a close call to getting windows cut in though, as four VW windows were on the floor in rear of the bus.

The vision from the start was to get a mechanically sound fully functioning Van using as many original Volkswagen parts as possible, as long as they were in good working

Tibbs for a Pits inspection. It passed after a couple of initial skeptical odd looks from the examiners. The bus is functional and safe! There is obviously sign writing under the re sprayed Turkis Green paint, hesitant to remove that paint as he fears changing the look of the bus too much and is aware how much time “fixing” up the paint will take. One day the Van will be treated to more lowering, a set of wheels and a wild 2276cc motor for some drag racing at the ¼ mile strip. For now Joel is very happy cruising around with the modified W LW Radio with mono speaker playing tunes.

Waroona Vintage Machinery Cruise & Camp

Words and Pictures by Dave & Tina Moore

We went to the Waroona Vintage Machinery rally

a few years ago and had a great time so thought we would make the trip again.

Saturday 17th September we headed off down the hill after lunch to the cruise starting point in Armadale. We went in to Ye Olde Narrogin Inne for a drink whilst we waited for everyone to arrive. We set off for Waroona with 6 Kombis, a Beetle and a Squareback. It was an easy cruise straight down South West Highway where we were joined by Jo and Andrew coming across from Singleton and Craig and Jane all the way from Queensland in their Kombi. Craig and Jane are spending 6 months travelling around Australia.

guys with a fire burning so we huddled round for the warmth. We thought it was going to be an early night because of the cold but the alcohol must have kicked in as we ended up with the music going and singing into the early hours of the morning. We woke to the sound of trailers coming in as we were camped next to the entrance. Fortunately we hadn’t quite blocked the gate! We packed up and drove about 200m across the oval to display the cars with all the others before heading off to explore the various exhibitors, vintage machinery and of course the cars. After a quick breakfast, first priority was the tool shed where Dave found his purchase of the day another dolly for panel beating (not dressing up). A couple more VWs turned up amongst the other vehicles arriving for display.

We camped up on the Waroona oval just in time for nibbles and drinks. Everyone was quick to set up camp and chill out. At six we headed over to the kitchen for hamburgers very kindly supplied by the The event is very well organised and we thank organisers and there we joined the other exhibitors them very much for hosting and making us feel in the relative warmth of the dining room. On the welcome. It was another great trip with great way back to camp we come across a couple of company.

Road Trippin valla specta

In July a handful of WA VW Club members made the trek across Australia to attend the 2016 Valla Spectacular.... and what an epic journey it was.

n tacular

2016

Ebor Falls

Tamworth

It began in Sydney with

the four Kombi’s freighted across the Nullarbor on trucks. They had been forklifted on and arrived safely although filthy. Tina & Dave Moore, Graham Tibbs, Justin Bayley, Jo & Andrew Mills, Jamie Barrett & Jan Ahearn all travelled by plane. The plan was to take a couple of days to drive up to Valla, exploring the NSW countryside along the way. Tina had put lots of work into planning an itinerary, which was much appreciated. The following is a recap of the first part of the journey:

Once the Kombi’s had been collected the journey began, travelling north along the convict built Great North Road. A beautiful scenic route through the Hunter Valley wine region. We camped next to the tavern at the historic town of Wollombi on the first night after exploring the town and sampling some local wines.

Big Guitar for another photo opportunity. We were witness to tens of thousands of flying foxes souring over our camp at dusk that night as they set out in search of food. It was a spectacular sight. The weather was much colder and as we were unable to have a fire all of the winter woollies came out.

Continuing north the next day we took the tourist route towards Singleton. With plenty of stops along the way to admire the scenery and take photos. We arrived in Tamworth where we did the obligatory visit to the

As we drove towards Valla the next day, sightseeing was high on the agenda. Passing through the beautiful town of Armidale we gathered information about the New England National Park and Waterfall Way.

Wollombi Camp

There were plenty of stops along the way as we visited Wollomombi Falls, ventured down 15kms of unsealed road to admire the stunning views from Point Lookout, stopped at Ebor Falls where we met another Kombi family travelling from SA and explored the Dorrigo Rainforest Centre. We arrived at Valla Tourist Park that evening and after checking in and registering we set up our camp and then joined fellow VW enthusiasts from far and wide at the welcome dinner. Over the next few days we participated in a variety of

organised events which gave us the opportunity to meet other enthusiasts and admire their cars and handiwork. There was a cruise to Coffs Harbor to visit the Big Banana, secret mens business at the Tourist Park...which included a Remote Control Car Comp, Balance your VW, Slot Car competition, Barn door and Buggy challenge. A short drive to Raleigh Raceway enabled us to watch the Ben Durie Memorial lap dash where around 20 vehicles of all sorts participated including a wheelie capable kombi, a subi powered roof chopped bug, Golfs, formula

Vee, and Porches. A highlight would have to be the Observation run to Nambucca Heads where one instruction was to drive through an old peoples home. The residents were all out there waiting for us in their wheelchairs and zimmer frames and smiles a mile wide. We did a couple of laps enjoying the pleasure on their faces. The final cruise ended with the famous street parade at Nambucca Heads where the VWs get to take over and close the street for a couple of hours.

Words & Pictures Jamie, Jan & Tina

Back at camp a Swap Meet and Markets was in full swing, a limbo event took place and was a sight! With vehicles piled full of people (including the bonnets) to get them as low as possible. On the final day of the Valla Spectacular the whole tourist park was abuzz from the early hours as cars piled in for the Show and Shine. With over 200 cars there was a showcase of VW’s right on our door step The

Swap Meet and Markets contributed to the carnival atmosphere. Throughout the week we had time to explore beautiful Valla beach and its surrounds. We saw the lovely towns of Bellingen & Nambucca, walked the 1km boardwalk at Urunga, visited Taylors Arm with it’s Pub with No Beer. There were also opportunities to meet people and explore the surrounds with River Cruises, Pamper days

and many other activities available. It was a privilege to participate in such a wonderful event. New friendships were formed & the opportunity to see what is happening in the Australian VW scene. The adventure had only just began for us travelers at this point as the epic journey home would take 3 weeks and 8000km all up.... but that’s another story. To be continued...

he weather was terrible T in Perth and this may have

put many off coming for the camping weekend, however it cleared up and wasn’t that bad after all. Dwellingup Pub was the first stop and meeting point. After a couple of hours and a nice lunch in the sunshine, the
