Hi Club Members and Readers…… The club is going great guns! The bank balance is looking good, so we can fund the upcoming events and give us some security, along with a full crew of committee members on-board it is in a great position for exciting times ahead. We are up to 186 members year to date, which puts us on target for another record year. We have a new online membership application form that makes for a more efficient process. A massive thank you goes out to member Steve Plaskett for his time producing the awesome form that is now in use. The CMC Classic Car Show is the next major event that I would love to see a good turnout from members. Its our 60th Year so 60 vee-dubs would be an amazing result. If you haven’t been before it’s a great day for all the family, set in the lovely Whiteman Park. Tickets are ‘free’ but we do have limited numbers. They are a must to gain entry and need to be collected well before, so put your hand up now for one. More details found in this issue and online. We had a ball at the Kwinana Motorplex recently. If you didn’t now already, a VW Themed Whoop Ass Wednesday was put on, and what a site it was seeing different genres up against each other! At one point I raced (well it wasn’t much of a race) an R36 in my 1969 Kombi...Fun times! Corey did a great job on the Mic and big screen – it was very informative. Thanks for everyone that rocked up and joined in, and the Motorplex for holding such a night. Last but not least, another thank you goes to the Brix family for the after party of the Munster Cruise3. Another great and successful VW Club WA event…bring on next years. Jamie Barrett Club President

Happy Birthday, Bulli! Production of cult Volkswagen vehicle began 65 years ago •From work-horse to legend •Sketches in a notepad are basis for its success story •11 million T-series vehicles sold worldwide Some retire at the age of 65 – but this one is just getting started! Production of the first Volkswagen Transporter began 65 years ago and the ‘Bulli’ is still going strong today. The first models were built in Wolfsburg before production started at a new facility in Hanover in 1956. This date also marks the beginning of a unique automotive love story: today, the entire model series has attained cult status. Whether hippy or tradesman – everyone is driving Transporter.

It all began in 1947 with a pencil sketch: the Dutch car importer Ben Pon saw a simple flat-bed vehicle at the Volkswagen plant and, taking it as a basic idea, he sketched the outlines of a Transporter with Beetle DNA in his notebook.

sented four prototypes: two panel vans, a kombi and a small bus. Nordhoff promised that the Transporter would be as uncompromising and robust as the Beetle: ‘These vehicles won't be handled with kid gloves, rather they will be treated roughly.’

Two years later, Volkswagen Plant Manager, Heinrich Nordhoff, preDesigners used the engine and axles of the Beetle. Instead of a central tubular frame of the popular family car, the bus had a unitized body that was mounted on a ladder frame. The 1.1-litre engine produced 18 kW (24.5PS) at 3300 rpm. The bus could transport up to eight people and the two rear seat rows could be removed easily to free up load space for around 750 kg of payload. Alfred Haesner, Head of Technical Development of Volkswagen GmbH from 1948 to 1952, said: ‘Accordingly, this type of commercial delivery vehicle can be used for all branches of business, for rush deliveries and freight, e.g. as a small bus, a special-purpose vehicle, postal vehicle, ambulance or (Continued on page 28)

Irresistible #GOgier: double world champion in superb form It does not get much better than that: Sébastien Ogier and Julien Ingrassia produced a perfect rally in Mexico. From the first metre to the last – the double world champions finished in the top three on 20 of the 21 special stages. They even clocked the fastest time on nine of the 21 stages. Ogier/Ingrassia moved into the lead just 5.61 kilometres into the rally and never surrendered that position. There was no lack of competition for the works drivers from Wolfsburg: as well as their team-mates Andreas Mikkelsen/Ola Fløene and Jari-Matti Latvala/Miikka Anttila, Thierry Neuville/Nicolas Gilsoul (B/B, Hyundai) and Mads Østberg/Jonas Andersson (N/S, Citroën) were also heavily

Sport Coupé Concept GTE

Coupé has a system power of 279 kW / 380 PS, but a low combined fuel consumption of just 2.0 litres per 100 km. The overall impression that is avant-garde is expressed in the design of the front end in particular. Here, the radiator grille, headlights and VW badge merge into a single unit. The roofline extends like a flattened curve from the Apillar – that is set far back and results in a very long bonnet – and into the rear body. Despite these fascinating proportions, the fourdoor Sport Coupé offers excellent headroom at all seats, and also has a 480-litre boot. The interior sets standards as well, and it enthuses with its clean design, ergonomic perfection and interactive interfaces between human and machine.

Dr Heinz-Jakob Neußer, Member of the Board of Management for Development at Volkswagen, is certain that the Sport Coupé Concept GTE will show the way to the future: "This concept is a breathtakingly dynamic coupé, which will set Another show highlight is the Sport standards in this class and offer a Coupé Concept GTE.
