Hi Club Members and Readers…… No its not the President, you have a guest scribe this edition, yes its me the Editor. I trust you are enjoying the magazine in whichever form you are receiving it, with the electronic version (i.e. the online link) in living colour proving to be more and more popular with most members now taking it this way. Besides our members, the magazine goes to many WA VW related businesses, sponsors and supporters who since the July issue mostly receive the electronic version. Our magazine also goes to many of the interstate VW clubs only in the electronic version. Recently a review of the hardcopy ViaWest costs showed our $3.00 per issue on the front page was out of date, and it now costs around $4.00 per issue to get printed, stapled and folded. Just as bit of trivia, a colour hardcopy of the same size would be around $10.00 per issue. We thank our printer Cristal JBE Office Choice in Willetton...see advert in this edition, for the discounts we receive to keep the hardcopy price to a minimum. The savings made by the move from hardcopy to the electronic copy of the magazine is a major contributor to the club keeping the membership subscription to $50.00 per year, the same as I paid when I joined in 2000. On the subject of the membership subscriptions, the clubs membership renewals have all been posted and you should have yours by now...if not, contact our Membership Officer, Andy Macey. Payment is due and if you pay by 1st September you will go into the draw for a FREE membership for 2016/17. Bob Lafferty was the lucky member last year and enjoys his 2015/16 membership FREE of charge. If you do not pay by 30th September, you will lose your club membership. Still on the subject of memberships, the club celebrated the end of the 2014/15 financial year with a record 204 memberships ...this has never been achieved while I have been at the club, WELL DONE! To reach this milestone in our 60th Anniversary year makes it all the more special. Just to finish off, a bit of analysis of our members, yes you lot. According to our membership register, the 204 memberships includes 10 life members with 27 members living outside the metropolitan and Mandurah area. The 204 equates to 517 persons (takes in140 partners and 173 children) with 349 cars listed. Imagine 173 future veedubbers and maybe members one day. Looks like I have run out of room, thank you all again for being such great members and I’ll see you out there on one of our club member events...check the Via West calendar, our website, Facebook and forum! Volkswagen Karmann Ghia The Volkswagen Karmann Ghia is a sports car marketed in 2+2 coupe (1955–1974) and convertible (1957–1974) body styles by Volkswagen. The Karmann Ghia combined the chassis and mechanicals of the Type 1 (Beetle) with styling by Luigi Segre of the Italian carrozzeria Ghia and hand-built bodywork by the German coachbuilder Karmann. The Karmann Ghia was internally designated the Type 14. In 1961, Volkswagen introduced the Type 34, a variant based on the newly introduced Type 3 platform and featuring angular bodywork. Production doubled soon after its introduction, becoming the car most imported into the U.S. More than 445,000 Karmann Ghias

were produced in Germany over the car's production life, not including the Type 34 variant. Karmann Brazil produced 41,600 cars locally for South America between 1962 and 1975.

Karmann and Segre1955

American industrial designer Walter Dorwin Teague included the Karmann Ghia in his list of the world's most beautifully designed products. The Type 14 debuted at the October 1953 Paris Auto Show as a styling concept created for Ghia by Luigi Segre. In the early 1950s, Volkswagen was producing its economy car, the Type 1 (Beetle). With an increase in post-war standards of living, executives at Volkswagen proposed adding a halo car to its model range, contracting with German coachbuilder Karmann for its manufacture. Karmann in turn contracted the Italian firm Ghia, who adapted styling themes previously explored for Chrysler and Studebaker to a Beetle floorpan wid-

ened by 12 in (300 mm). Virgil Exner claimed that the design was his, based on the 1953 Chrysler D'Elegance. In contrast to the Beetle's machine -welded body with bolt-on fenders, the Karmann Ghia's body panels were butt-welded, hand-shaped, and smoothed with English pewter in a time-consuming process commensurate with higher-end manufacturers, resulting in the Karmann Ghia's higher price. The design and prototype were well received by Volkswagen executives, and in August 1955 the first Type 14 was manufactured in Osnabrück, Germany. Public reaction to the Type 14 exceeded expectations, and more than 10,000 were sold in the first year. The Type 14 was marketed as a practical and stylish 2+2 rather (Continued on page 20)

than as a true sports car. As they shared engines, the Type 14's engine displacement grew concurrently with the Type 1 (Beetle), ultimately arriving at a displacement of 1584 cc, producing 60 hp (45 kW). In August 1957, Volkswagen introduced a convertible version of the Karmann Ghia. Exterior changes in 1961 included wider and finned front grilles, taller and more rounded rear taillights and headlights relocated to a higher position – with previous models and their lower headlight placement called lowlights. The Italian designer Sergio Sartorelli, designer of Type 34, oversaw the various restylings of Type 14. In 1970, larger taillights integrated the reversing lights and larger wrap-around turn signals. Still larger and wider taillights increased side visibility. In 1972, large square-section bumpers replaced the smooth round originals. For the USA model only, 1973 modifications mandated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) included energy-absorbing bumpers. A car-

peted package shelf replaced the rear seat.

In September 1961, Volkswagen introduced the VW 1500 Karmann Ghia, or Type 34, based on its new In late 1974 the car was supersedType 3 platform, featuring ed by the Porsche 914 and the Volkswagen's new flat 1500cc enGolf/Rabbit based Scirocco. gine design, and styling by Italian engineer Sergio Sartorelli. Due to model confusion with the Type 14 1500 introduced in 1967, the Type 34 was known variously as the "Der GroĂ&#x;e Karmann" ("the big Karmann") in Germany, "Razor Edge Ghia" in the United Kingdom, or "European Ghia" (or "Type 3 Ghia" among enthusiasts) in the United States. Today the name Type 34 is recognized as the worldwide naming convention.

Karmann Ghia TC As an alternative to the Type 34 Karmann-Ghia coupé, which Volkswagen had introduced to Europe in 1961, Karmann-Ghia do Brasil looked to Ghia in Turin for a reworked version of the Type 14 at the end of the 1960s. At the time Ghia employed Giorgetto Giugiaro, the famous Italian designer and he was set to work on the new Brazilian Karmann Ghia. The result was the Volkswagen Karmann Ghia TC (Touring Coupé), internally known as the Type 145, which was introduced in 1970. This was a roomy 2+2 coupe with a modern and comfortable interior. Underneath, it was similar to the Type 14, although the platform of the Volkswagen Variant was used rather than that of the Volkswagen Beetle. The main difference was the engine: the Type 145 TC was fitted with the 1584 cc flat-four aircooled boxer unit from the Type 3 instead of the 1192 cc unit of the Type 14. The car had 65 hp (48 kW) @ 4600 rpm and a top speed of 86 mph (138 km/h), compared to the 34 hp (25 kW) and 72 mph (116 km/h) of the Type 14. 18,119 TC models were produced during its production run from 1970 until 1976. It was offered only in South America and was not exported off the continent. There is a prototype that is part of the factory museum collection of Karmann in Osnabrück, Germany.

'V-Charge': VW pushes development of Automated Parking and Charging of Electric pointing the way to the future of automated parking. Vehicles  Parking spaces driven to fully automatically  Electric vehicles charged automatically  V-Charge places only minor demands on car park infrastructure  Intelligent form of valet parking Wolfsburg – Volkswagen AG aspires to holding the leading position in the field of automated parking. A look into the near future of automated parking is given by 'VCharge', an EU research project, in which six national and international partners are jointly developing new technologies. Its focus is on automating the search for a parking space and on the charging of electric vehicles. The best part about it is that the vehicle not only automatically looks for an empty parking space, but that it finds an empty space with charging infrastructure and inductively charges its battery. Once the charging process is finished, it automatically frees up the charging bay for another electric vehicle and looks for a conventional parking space. 'V-Charge' stands for Valet Charge and is

this stream of data is put together in real timeto form an overall picture – the task that the technical 'sensory organs' have to fulfil is complex and extremely varied. As continual tests run as part of the research project show, VCharge is already functional today. GPS-independent indoor localisation, centimetre-exact parking space measurement and 360degree recognition of surroundings all function reliably, as do the system's reactions to pedestrians and vehicles and the way in which it takes account of traffic moving in line with or across the vehicle's path.

history and more than 14 million vehicles sold, the Volkswagen Polo is now available as a limited premium special edition model: beginning today, Polo fans can purchase one of just 1,000 Polo "Original" models in Germany. The clearly distinctive features of the four-door Polo "Original" include door mirror caps in body colour, smoked rear lights, the Polo "Original" emblem on the wings and "Original" lettering on the door sill plates. The vehicle's modern exterior is rounded out by LED headlights, a high-gloss black radiator grille and 16-inch "Portago" alloy wheels. Some of the cars are also available in exclusive Honey Orange Metallic paintwork. The high-quality interior features a multifunction steering wheel and a gear lever knob and handbrake grip in leather with "Truffle" coloured stitching. In a tribute to the first-ever Polo, the limited edition models boast black/orange sports seats with a tartan design, as well as faux leather side bolsters and headrests. The interior has also been visibly upgraded through the

inclusion of special paintwork accents and pedals with an aluminium look. The Climatronic climate control system, a hands-free unit and the MEDIAIN multimedia socket are all available as standard equipment. The Front Assist ambient traffic monitoring system with the City Emergency Braking feature can help reduce the likelihood of a collision, or even prevent one altogether. was already to celebrate ten million vehicles in 1963. An incomparable success story had started. When the record of one million vehicles was achieved on 5 August 1955, Volkswagen celebrated a huge party. The Beetle (in the meantime known as the “Oval” model) and the Transporter, still constructed in Wolfsburg back then, comprised the model range. Additionally, the Beetle convertible, manufactured at Karmann. The star of the anniversary celebration at the works stadium was a golden 30 PS Beetle, gemmed with rhinestones on the chrome parts and the typical oval-shaped rear windscreen. Thousands of employees and their guests celebrated and enjoyed a show with presentations from all export countries. Only a few people believed in such success back at the end of 1945 when production started. However, there were sufficient visionaries amongst the workers and managers who gave their all for “their” product. It took ten years to crack the first million – of which the majority was the Beetle (Type 1) and its convertible spin-off and the remainder the Transporter (Type 2). This was augmented by the Karmann-Ghia at the end of 1955 and the “Large Beetle” 1500 (Type 3) followed suit in 1961. In the meantime, export was in full swing, with long delivery times for the Beetle.

I’ve been through this season, this victory means a huge amount. I would like to thank the entire team for its great work. They have always believed in me, even in times when things have not run so smoothly. As expected, today was a real rollercoaster and a perfect finale to the 2015 Rally Finland. Thank you very much to the fans for the support in the service park and along the route. I just want to enjoy the moment now!” Andreas Mikkelsen, Volkswagen Polo R WRC #9 “We had set our sights very high for the Rally Finland. Above all, we wanted to defend second place in the World Championship – and to extend our advantage if possible. Unfortunately, however, today was not our day and we crashed out. My pace notes were a little too optimistic on the fifth stage. I lifted in a long left-hander with a slight crest, which can be taken flat-out in perfect conditions. However, that did not prove to be enough. We ran out of road and rolled several times. Fortunately the Polo R WRC is a very solid car and nothing seri-

ous happened to us. We are obviously very disappointed that the damage was too great to be able to repair it on-site. We will now look ahead and turn our full attention to Volkswagen’s home round in Germany.”

Ingrassia have their first opportunity to wrap up the World Championship at the coming round in Germany. Anyone who knows them will also know that they do not like finishing second, and will be doing everything in their power to finish on top again in Germany.
