Editors Note Another Bumper issue that I am proud to deliver to you. Thanks for the great feedback and all the contributors that have helped make this what it is. In the email header you would have seen questions for YOU to appear on the Member Profile Page. Just cut n paste them along with your answers and a picture or two. Then email them to:- editor@vwclubwa.com You know when you are at a show such as Day of the Volkswagen and you look at all the cars and kombis - Do you really look at them or cast over them? I had a great time studying Sean Jones’ Manx Buggy on an impromptu photo shoot for this edition. I had a chance to take it all in - one subject to concentrate on without distractions. It helped as I was looking through the view finder focusing (pun intended) on parts and different elements, from the gear shift head to the exhaust welding. Have a look for yourself at the detail and nice touches and perhaps I’ll look closer in the future. Plenty of posters have been knocked up and added to this edition including Day of the Volkswagen, the Annual General Meeting, Coastal cruise among others. Dwellingup is the next trip out of town - save and collect firewood to contribute to the fire if you are coming along!

COMMITTEE MEETS 3RD WEDNESDAY OF EACH MONTH

AUGUST 2017

President’s Spot Dear Members and Readers, It hasn’t made the magazine this time but the Winter Sun and Beer Run last week had a great turnout thanks to Andrew Dawsons new promotional flyers and planning. We are really making an effort to plan and lock in dates for club events well in advance. Facebook has got nearly 5,000 followers. Imagine if they all turned up at one of our events! Great work Jon for keeping the page alive and up to date. The forum has gone a bit slow over recent months and there are plans to give it a make over and a push. There are lots of great happenings on our site so go and check it out and be brave to post up and comment. I said it in the last report (and I’ll say it all again) The AGM is on the horizon too so please come along and get involved. - There will be no video invite from me this year! We welcome new people to the committee and some of us wouldn’t mind taking a step back. Realistically the roles don’t take up more than 2 or 3 hours a week. It’s at the Vic Park Hotel the same venue as last year. It turned out to be a really good night last year - I will be using Uber for sure! Some great news is that the Classic Car Show does not clash with the always popular Fairbridge Music Festival so we should be able to get a good bunch of vehicles together to represent our Club. The location for this has moved to Ascot Race Course and plans are well underway to make it bigger and better. Sadly, Ross Booth, a club member from the South West, passed away recently. We helped fulfil his wishes in finding a loving owner for his treasured 59 Beetle. We will be holding an event in his honour later in the year. Our club and our chosen charity Save Our Sons have been beneficiaries of his Will. Rest in Peace.

Alfreds Kitchen (Alfreds as we regulars have come to call it) has been a place to hang out and meet people, take parts that have been traded during the previous month, get knowledge, have a browse at the vehicles, take photos, buy merchandise and generally catch up with those in the scenew. It’s a very laid back informal meet. Getting a spot can be hard some months (not at Julys meet though - it was pouring and windy, but some of the hard-core still showed up). If you haven’t been yet for some reason I highly recommend it. The burgers and soup are great too.

olding my camera in my hand snapping away I really got a chance to study parts of this amazing Buggy. Everywhere you look - it is special - you can see the “Attention to detail pays a big part in my life - I’m meticulous thought, care and time spent to get it right. about everything.... details Sean has been building it since 2008 and it passed pit matter.” inspection in 2012 to gain rego once again. Since then the engine has been upgraded, the recent addition is the Digital Distributor from Magna Spark. This allows Sean to tweak the engines tuning to perfection, using his laptop. The IRS rear suspension from a Superbug was squeezed in and the front has a ball joint beam out of a 72 Beetle to help get the ride and stance right (Sean told me he is going to raise the front by 5mm). Attached are disc brakes all round with a Ford bolt pattern to accommodate the detailed Cragar Rims.

“Attention to detail pays a big part in my life“ Sean tells me. “I’m meticulous about everything.... details matter.” (I am nervous now laying the pictures out ensuring the spacing between the photographs is the same as I know he’ll be looking!) He is always looking to improve. Steering wheel and perhaps different rims are on the cards. The Buggy took a run down the 1/4 mile strip at the Motorplex and ran a very impressive 14 seconds.

Huge Rear Tyres at 275/60/15 The fronts are large too coming in at 205/60/15 both wrapped around Cragar Magnum rims.

The beautifully made fully custom A1 Heatpack exhaust sits neatly within the cage at the rear, behind the immaculately detailed clean engine.

From not quite a 73 superbug to a:

superbug words TREVOR HOWS images JAMIE BARRETT

It all started about 7 years ago when my daughter saw an advert in the paper at a car yard for a 73 VW beetle, it was bright yellow and she fell in love with it at first sight. We went along to look at it. The car had just had a respray and new interior, from outside looked good, what a big mistake, fresh paint covers a lot of sins as I later discovered. Inside new seat covers and carpets, dash was rough and had been patched up with bits of metal covering holes and painted over, no problem I thought, will tidy that up myself. Took car on test drive, brakes were spongy and indicators didn’t work properly, brakes no problem as I’ve been racing cars for years, so have some mechanical knowledge but car electrics have no idea. How can you say no to an 18 year old who has fallen in love with a car and says ‘Dad’ will fix any problems that arise. We brought the car on the condition that indicators were fixed. On driving car home, we got 4Km’s and it broke down, phoned dealer who sent out tow truck and took car back to yard, we then went back 3 days later and picked up car. On way home, it ran this time, but every time

you went around a corner, horn would sound, disconnected it and carried on home. Found to be earthing issue under steering wheel and needed adjustment. She used car and every now and then, I sorted problems out as they arose. After about 2 years I got a call one day to come and jump start car as she had a problem starting the car, she charged the battery and then 3 days later it would go flat. I jumped started car and when got it going noticed generator light stayed on, when I asked her about it she said ‘oh that lights been on for ages, but I ignored it’. The worst thing was that when I stood in the back of car to jump start it the floor went down several inches, which I later discovered why. I fitted a reconditioned generator in and kept her on road for another month or so. She then decided to go on a long trip abroad and needed to sell car, I always wanted a project to do, as had to give up the racing since moving over and R/C car racing wasn’t quite the same. A deal was struck (still think paid way to much

for a pile of rust with an engine, but she thought I got a good deal !, that’s daughters for you). On starting to strip car down that’s when the 5 year nightmare began. Firstly floors on both sides were covered in some form of metallic Lino about .5mm thick and then household floor underlay glued on top, virtually no metal remained, found out later that when it rained, as roof leaked ( car has been converted to a convertible) that my daughter put more towels on floor to soak up water, can’t imagine why it was so rusty! The drivers heater channel was also like a tea strainer and the brake pedal return Spring was a pile of brown dust on floor ( she hooked her foot behind pedal to bring it back). I know this doesn’t cast a good impression of my daughter, but she has a degree and is a para legal, but she has no idea or interest in how cars work, just wants to go from A to B. Further stripping car down just found rust after rust, also found front end had been in a smash and was very badly repaired. By this time rust bubbles were appearing in paint so a decision was made to remove body from floor pan. By luck met Dave Moore at a club meet in Bunbury who had a Superbug he wanted to dispose of and another bug for spares, both cars turned out to be very useful.

new floors installed and in place of 1” box section to strengthen floor pan that had been fitted, I welded in proper cabriolet sill strengtheners, front lower section of chassis also had to be replaced. I then sandblasted body and chassis ready for painting, body revealed more horror from cowboy repairs, which took more time to sort out. Eventually after approximately 250 hours of work car was in primer ready for paint. I also changed rear wings from elephant foot back lights to earlier wings with smaller lights ( another find at Dave’s ).

Engine is stock at present apart from generator to alternator conversion, car has all new suspension with poly bushes, 50mm lowered, new brakes and lines, shaved door handles with electric solenoids including boot at front, electric Windows, new wiring loom and new updated fuse box and relays relocated to boot, all lights are Led and front indicators flush fitted in front wings (ones on top have been removed), headlights are HID with built in angle eyes for side lights, new two tone interior seat covers and door panels, new carpets, underlay and proper sound deadening fitted this time, new smooth metal dash, painted same colour as car, bumpers removed. Car has been resprayed in a Camaro metallic blue, but unfortunately some reaction has occurred in a In the end I had to cut the front end off my car few spots, so I am going to leave it for about a and scrap it and weld on front of the other car year and then respray car when funds allow. along with new heater channel. The floor pan had It has taken about 5 years to complete, as working away doesn’t allow a lot of time to work on car, although it has been a case of 2 steps back and 1 forward, as it has fought me all the way. Most parts I have sought through Vw heritage in UK, there service is outstanding. Biggest thanks goes to my wife Sarah for standing by me and when I’ve had hard times on car telling me to ‘just hurry up and get the bloody thing finished’

ay of the Volkswagen will be at the same venue as last year with a couple of subtle changes. The theme is based around the Unique Australian Country Buggy. We’ll be celebrating 60 years of it. With some great examples on display on the day. This vehicle was initially designed for the military so we are loosely basing the theme around the Army too, so get creative with the displays around your vehicle and your attire.

W

e have decided to strip back the way trophies are distributed and go for a broader approach. Everyone who attends will be up for nomination and a prize. Vehicles will not be judged in the same format as previous years. This will benefit us all and make for a smoother entry and vehicle parking.

T

ave has been steaming into Gulliver’s transformation over the last couple of months getting the chassis work done. In order to prepare Gulliver to receive his donor rear chassis Dave cut out some of the cargo floor and remnants of the old chassis.

he replacement chassis was bolted to a jig then slid under Gulliver, Gulliver was lowered down onto his new chassis, lots of measurements were taken and after a bit of jiggling around the chassis was welded in position.

T

he remaining floor, outer sills, inner sills, outriggers, cross members, top hats and heater tube were cut out. Then an assessment of the centre I beams found them to be in good shape. They were sandblasted along with the middle section of the original chassis. This exposed some corrosion in the chassis on either side of the front cross member so the rusted area was cut out and replaced with new steel.

N

ew top hats and inner sills were fabricated, these along with some funky green Klassic Fab outriggers and cross members were all clamped into position with just a few of Dave’s many billions of sets of Molegrips and clamps. Once the parts were all welded in, a new heater tube was installed along with replacing the damaged parts of the handbrake, throttle, clutch and shift rod tubes. Then the whole section got treated with a couple of good coats of Epoxy primer.

I

’ve had a break from working on Gulliver so will be getting back into more paint stripping.
