Dear Members & Readers, With the Christmas decorations taken down and New Years resolutions behind you, February is here already! For those who tried to get your project completed and on show at Day of the Volkswagen……..and didn’t make it - Keep the momentum going as “The 47th National BUG IN” hits Western Australia in a couple of months. With the beautiful Swan Valley chosen as the central hub its time to put the dates in your diaries. The main show being held in Whiteman Park it will truly be a family event with lots to do. Or you could sit around the pool at the holiday park with a nice local bottle. Looking on the Events section on our forum and Facebook page, the events are rolling in. There’s something for everyone. From racing to camping, or cruising we have it all at the moment. The Motorplex in Kwinana is holding a VW night. Now this isn’t just for big engine fast cars. We had a ball at the last one, I raced my kombi against another and even against an R36. Its just fun and very affordable. Plus it puts a big smile on your face. The club proves to be very active again this year with high membership levels, money in the bank, and a very good group of committee members making it all happen. We have raised a nice sum from events for our chosen charity Duchenne foundation. With the next fundraiser being Munster4 on 5th March. The biannual Valla Event (VW Spectacular 2016) is this year too. So get your Club Calendars filled out with all these great VW related activities and have the best year! Hope to see you out there or online. Club President Jamie Barrett

Third “Monte” victory in a row for Volkswagen Ogier wins opening round of the WRC, Mikkelsen second Volkswagen one-two: 33rd career win for Ogier, 15th podium for Mikkelsen Extremely treacherous conditions, alternating between dry, wet, snow and sheer ice Prize athlete: Volkswagen Polo R WRC claims 35th victory at 40th rally Wolfsburg (24 January 2016). Onetwo at the “Monte”, the third in a row for driver, co-driver and team – Sébastien Ogier/Julien Ingrassia (F/F) enjoyed a magnificent success at the Rally Monte Carlo. Their team-mates Andreas Mikkelsen/ Anders Jæger (N/N) finished runner-up to complete a Volkswagen one-two and round off a dream start to the 2016 FIA World Rally Championship (WRC). The latest victory marked the 35th triumph in 40 rallies for the Polo R WRC the 33rd career win for Ogier/ Ingrassia, while Mikkelsen racked (Continued on page 26)

up his 15th podium finish. Furthermore, Mikkelsen’s new co-driver Anders Jæger crowned his debut in the top category of the World Rally Championship with his first podium. This is something that no other WRC co-driver in the current field can claim to have achieved. “Monte” winner three years in a row – Sébastien Ogier takes his place among the rally legends Sandro Munari did it with Lancia, Walter Röhrl with Opel, Lancia and Audi, Tommi Mäkinen with Mitsubishi and Sébastien Loeb with Citroën. Sébastien Ogier has now joined this elite circle of rally legends – as the fifth driver in the history of the World Rally Championship to win the Rally Monte Carlo three times in succession. He emerged triumphant with Volkswagen in 2014, 2015 and 2016. The 318-hp Polo R WRC joins the Porsche 911, Lancia Stratos, Lancia Delta, Mitsubishi Lancer and Citroën Xsara as the sixth model of car with three “Monte” wins in a row to its name. With 35 victories from 40 rallies, the Polo R WRC is also the most successful car in rally history, thanks to an impressive win ratio of 87.5 per cent.

Well-staffed for the tyre lottery Typical “Monte”: dry or wet asphalt on one stage, ice and snow on the next. Sometimes, a bit of everything in the space of just a few kilometres. The Rally Monte Carlo is unique on the World Rally Championship calendar. And the 2016 rally lived up to its reputation as perpetually unpredictable. With 16 special stages and 377.59 kilometres against the clock, the drivers had to get the tyre selection just right. Thankfully, the three Volkswagen duos could rely on their route note cars. The “ice spy” for winner Sébastien Ogier was Simon Jean Joseph, Andreas Mikkelsen was

given valuable advice by Bernt Kollevold, and Jari-Matti Latvala was able to call on Toni Gardemeister for assistance. Their information helped the Volkswagen drivers make intelligent decisions – none more so than Andreas Mikkelsen, who was the only driver to take more spiked tyres with him on Saturday and gained time on his rivals as a result. Power Stage points 151 to 154 for Volkswagen drivers, 26th Power Stage win for Ogier The Power Stage, on which bonus points are awarded to the fastest three drivers and co-drivers, has always been Volkswagen’s playground. The Rally Monte Carlo saw Sébastien Ogier/Julien Ingrassia win this special stage for the 26th time, adding points 151 to 153 to Volkswagen’s account. Andreas Mikkelsen finished third to add point number 154. Crash brings Rally Monte Carlo to a premature end for Latvala/Anttila For Jari-Matti Latvala/Miikka Anttila (FIN/FIN), the Rally Monte Carlo came to a disappointing end on Saturday. The duo came off the road on stage eleven, skidding into a ditch and out into a field on the other side. In the process, light impact was made with a spectator, who was thankfully unhurt. Volkswagen takes next step in campaign for new Tiguan 窶「 Multistage marketing campaign from world premiere to market launch 窶「 Continuation of digital advertising measures for start of advance sales 窶「 Focus on design, connectivity and driver assistance systems A wealth of additional information on the new Tiguan is now being posted on the microsite. A wealth of additional information on the new Tiguan is now being posted on the microsite. Volkswagen is adding the next stage to its marketing campaign for the new Tiguan to mark the start of advance sales. The campaign focuses in particular on de-

sign, connectivity and driver assistance systems. The motto "Access all areas." not only stands for the offroad character of the new Tiguan, but also reflects the connectivity features which offer the driver constant access to online information. The second generation of the compact SUV is making an especially strong appearance on social media. A wealth of additional information on the new Tiguan is now being posted on the microsite first launched when the model made its world premiere at the IAA in September 2015.

Its striking proportions and powerful presence are impressive. The slogan 窶連ccess all areas.' underscores the model's appearance", Anders Sundt Jensen, Head of Marketing Communications, Volkswagen Passenger Cars, said, and added: "The challenge lies in maintaining an eye-catching campaign throughout the entire period from the world premiere last September and the start of advance sales in January right through to the market launch in April."

The microsite (www.tiguan.com) which went live at last year's IAA is "The new Tiguan oozes confidence. the common thread running through the entire campaign. More and more information is being successively added. As advance sales get underway, customers can access information on design, connectivity and driver assistance systems and can individually create their car by using the configurator. Furthermore, a film is highlighting the special features of the new Tiguan: clear, structured elements and proportions give the vehicle a masculine and eye-catching touch. Its expressive design unites functionality and emotion.

New posts on social media channels will be published during the phase between the start of advance sales and market launch. Feature films and photo posts take a humorous look at the new Tiguan. The leading characters in the spots make another appearance during the market launch grand finale, when the microsite which has been part of the campaign right from the start is fully complete, thus creating an overarching framework.

By the end of the Second World War in 1945, just 630 of the People's Car known as the 'KdFWagen' had been built. The stateof-the-art factory in what was to become the present-day Wolfsburg, built specially to make the vehicle, was integrated into Germany's wartime armaments industry, producing mainly military goods. The site was occupied by US troops on 11th April 1945. In June 1945, the British Military Government took over trusteeship of the factory with its workforce of some 6,000 people. On 22nd August 1945, the recently appointed 29-year-old Senior Resident Officer Major Ivan Hirst acquired an initial order for 20,000 Saloons, thereby providing the factory and its workforce with a future, and avoiding the threat of decommissioning and dismantling. The vehicles were intended mainly for use by the occupying Allies, but also to help provide health-care services in rural areas. Production mostly remained stuck at around 1,000 vehicles a month through 1946/47. It was only after the currency reform in June 1948 that significant numbers of private buyers emerged. Volkswagen's British roots remain discernible still today. It was the British who converted the factory to civilian manufacturing, and who focused on the quality of the vehicles. They paid great attention to service and meeting customers' needs, and set up a dealer network which was already covering all three western zones of Germany by 1948. The launch of exports in October 1947 marked a first step onto the international

stage. The first elections to the Works Council in November 1945 – barely six months after the end of the war – introduced the principles of democratic employee participation into the plant. When the Volkswagenwerk GmbH company was placed in German hands in October 1949, it was in pole position for the start of Germany's Economic Miracle. Dr. Manfred Grieger, Head of the Volkswagen Aktiengesellschaft Corporate History Department, sums up: "Volkswagen was very fortunate in that the robust Saloon helped the British Military Government to carry out its administrative functions, and that in Ivan Hirst it

had the right man at the helm. The skilful pragmatist gave the factory and the workforce a vision, motivating British military personnel and German workers alike to turn the languishing works into a successful market-driven business. He knew the qualities of the Volkswagen Saloon, and was able to realise them on the road." The Beetle was a key factor in the development of democracy and mobility in post-war Germany, and subsequently found a home in many other countries, acting as an important ambassador in promoting a positive image of Germany. Production at the Beetle's last manufacturing location in Puebla, Mexico, was discontinued at the end of July 2003. With over 21 million vehicles built, the Beetle had become an automotive icon, loved by many millions of people. Its characteristic shape is recognised everywhere.
