Since joining the club in 2000 I have held most positions in the committee...including President, Vice President (current), Secretary, Treasurer, Membership Officer, Editor (current) and Event Coordinator. I have been involved in organising three WA Bug-ins, 2005, 2011 and this years 2016. However the longest position I have held is that of Editor of this magazine...since 2003. That was about the time I joined

Dear Members and Readers, As you all know life can get very busy at times. I’ve had a huge run over the last 4 months with so much on! Some work, some health, and then there’s the passion – Volkswagens. So being absolutely flat out I thought “why don’t I commit to a huge holiday were there will be a deadline to get my kombi engineered and registered, and on top of that build a new engine for it ” - Idiot!. A few of us in the club decided to build our own engines. If you are like me and never took on such an undertaking before I encourage you to have a go. I could only do this with friends in the club helping and guiding the way. I have learned so much. Terminology and parts such as “valve slap, deck height & cam gear mesh” the last has cost me a lot of time and money! But it has been a great experience. There is a lot of knowledge within our small VW community here in WA. I am nearly there (in Valla) for the VW Spectacular – I need a holiday! This coming August will mark the 8th Anniversary of the monthly Alfreds Kitchen meet. The first Wednesday of every month in Guildford is now a well known date to lock in to the calendar. Soon to be opened at the site is a restored railway carriage for those rainy days/evenings. Tina Moore the club secretary is working with a software company to help streamline the administration of the club. You should have received your membership renewal email. We have a swap meet in August at Martin Boultons “VForce Performance” in Wangara – see flyer in this edition Day of the Volkswagen is now locked in to a new venue. 4th December 2016 will be in Fremantle at Wilson Park, South Beach. Pink is the colour with Surf and Beach the theme! So come dressed appropriately – Surf’s Up Dudes…. The Annual General Meeting is not far away, so if you want to help with the club in any format or are interested in seeing what is going on, consider coming along. The location is in Victoria Park again this year. More info to come. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Ray Willis who has not only been putting the ViaWest magazine but for the work in keeping the club running. Without Ray the club would not be where it is today. Ray is stepping down from the committee and his current roles (unless we can convince him to stay on board) from Myself, the Committee and all the Members – THANK YOU Ray! For all the hard work and time you have put in over the years. Club President Jamie Barrett

Customers keep faith in Volkswagen Strong sales of its key models and a bumper month for its biggest diesel vehicle has given Volkswagen Australia a good news June. Australia’s favourite European carmaker sold 5913 vehicles of all types last month, a figure curtailed by diminishing numbers of available SUVs. The award-winning Golf was again Volkswagen’s best-performing car with 2363 of them finding homes – its best monthly result so far in 2016. Although it is the oldest vehicle in its segment, the diesel only Amarok ute continued to be the discerning buyer’s choice – emphasised by an almost 40 per cent take up of the Highline variant. This variant starts at $52,990.

Ralph Beckmann, Marketing Manager at Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles Australia, also expresses high praise for the campaign: “The Naked Ute campaign is all about disrupting traditional ute advertising. We went for a multichannel approach and a strategy of selling the Amarok on its merits without relying on the Volkswagen badge. It has certainly been a great success for us, and to receive a Lion for it is just the icing on the cake.” However, the “Naked Ute” was not the only Volkswagen Australia campaign to receive an accolade at Cannes. Volkswagen Australia and DDB Sydney were also awarded a Bronze Lion for webseries “The Tough Sell”, which showcases the iconic Golf’s innovative technologies ranging from Fatigue Detection to Park Assist. The series follows fictional Volkswagen salesman “Tom” as he attempts to sell the Golf to cynical residents in the remote town of Blinman in SA, eventually winning them over with the car’s handy and widely-applicable features. The series was launched on Facebook in July 2015 in collaboration with the platform – the first time that Volkswagen Australia invested wholly in digital channels to deliver its brand message. “In a world where a four-week TV investment will buy you a sixmonth video presence on Facebook, it’s clear we need to change the way we do things, look for new opportunities and think about campaigns in different ways,” advises DDB Sydney’s Toby Talbot.

A new boost function gives the vehicle a further power-up to 213kW, and also provides 380Nm of torque upon full ‘kick down’ of the acceleration for around 10 seconds each time. The Golf GTI 40 Years incorporates some of the best technical features of the earlier Golf GTI Performance model, including: larger brakes, sophisticated front differential lock, unique 19-inch ‘Ruby’ alloy wheels, and adaptive chassis control. The new model has then further raised the bar with a host of distinctive offerings. A unique and purposeful styling treatment simultaneously upholds the Golf GTI’s legacy and sets the 40 Year model apart. A bespoke body kit including a new front bumper with larger air intakes and a two-piece rear roof spoiler gives the GTI an aggressive stance on the road and significantly increases downforce. Meanwhile, a black side stripe on the body and the choice of a traditional tornado red and pure white paint exterior pay tribute to the original GTI. The interior conveys a premium sport quality, with unique anniversary ‘honeycomb’ seat upholstery (featuring the GTI logo) and decorative inlays as well as an Alcantara-covered steering wheel and door trim inserts. Other specification highlights include: •Choice of gloss paint finishes with a contrasting black roof or Metallic paint finish •Black door mirrors •Revised rear bumper with new diffusor •Large diameter exhaust tailpipes, left and right •Darkened LED tail lights, reminiscent of the Golf R (Continued on page 27)

It was thanks to a large portion of courage at the Rally Poland that Andreas Mikkelsen claimed his second victory in the FIA World Rally Championship (WRC), following his maiden win at the 2015 Rally Spain. He and co-driver Anders Jæger have featured on the podium four times this season, but this is their first appearance on the very top step. The win was made possible by a spirited drive. Mikkelsen/Jæger were the third duo onto the route for the first two days of the rally, meaning they had to contend with the disadvantage of having to sweep the roads clear of loose gravel for the subsequent world rally cars. They finished in the top three on 15 of the 21 special stages and were embroiled in a thrilling duel with Ott Tänak/Raigo Mõlder (EST/EST, M-Sport-Ford) throughout the entire race. They kept the pressure on the Estonian duo on Sunday morning, and were in the right place at the right time to take advantage when Tänak/ Mõlder lost time due to a puncture on the penultimate special stage.

Their closest rivals are team-mates Andreas Mikkelsen/Anders Jæger, whose victory at the Rally Poland saw them climb into second place in the Driver and Co-Driver competitions. Jari-Matti Latvala and Miikka Anttila have moved up into fourth place, 75 points behind the leaders. Volkswagen has opened a nice gap in the Manufacturers’ Championship: at the end of the first half of the season, the Wolfsburg-based car maker leads Hyundai by 61 points. 25 points are awarded for a win. The 37th Power Stage win for Volkswagen, and the 31st for Sébastien Ogier: the closing stage of the Rally Poland was once again a huge success for the car maker from Wolfsburg. Thanks to the stage win for Ogier/ Ingrassia and second place for Latvala/Anttila, Volkswagen has now picked up extra points on 83 occasions – and that in only the 45th Power Stage since the manufacturer joined the World Rally Championship at the 2013 Rally Monte Carlo.
